PSALM 66
What shall I return to the Lord for all his bounty to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord, I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. O God, you have made heaven and earth and all that is good: help us to delight in simple things and to rejoice always in the richness of your bounty; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
FIRST Reading
Jeremiah 29.1, 4–7 These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.
1. O shout with joy to God, all the earth: sing to the honour of his name, and give him glory as his praise. 2. Say to God ‘How fearful are your works: because of your great might your enemies shall cower before you.’ 3. All the earth shall worship you: and sing to you, and sing praises to your name. 4. Come then and see what God has done: how terrible are his dealings with the children of Adam. 5. He turned the sea into dry land, they crossed the river on foot: then were we joyful because of him. 6. By his power he rules for ever, his eyes keep watch on the nations: and rebels shall never rise against him. 7. O bless our God, you peoples: and cause his praises to resound, 8. Who has held our souls in life: who has not suffered our feet to slip. 9. For you have proved us, O God: you have tried us as silver is tried. 10. You brought us into the net: you laid sharp torment on our loins. 11. You let our enemies ride over our heads, we went through fire and water: but you brought us out into a place of liberty.

Mass Readings Second reading
2 Timothy 2.1–15 You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well. Share in suffering like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving in the army gets entangled in everyday affairs; the soldier’s aim is to please the enlisting officer. And in the case of an athlete, no one is crowned without competing according to the rules. It is the farmer who does the work who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in all things. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David – that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful – for he cannot deny himself. Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia. For all things give thanks to God because this is what he expects of you in Christ Jesus. Alleluia!
Gospel
Luke 17.11–19 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’ When he saw them, he said to them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, ‘Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?’ Then he said to him, ‘Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.’
Communion motet Ave verum corpus William Byrd (1543-1623) Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine cuius latus perforatum fluxit aqua et sanguine: esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine.
Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, having truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for mankind, from whose pierced side water and blood flowed: Be for us a foretaste in the trial of death!
O Iesu dulcis, O Iesu pie, O Iesu, fili Mariae. Miserere mei. Amen.
O sweet Jesus, O holy Jesus, O Jesus, son of Mary, have mercy on me. Amen.
This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Trivia Night We are pleased to note that our annual trivia night raised $1265 for the Factor Community Centre in Redfern. Thank you to Peter Whitford and Rob Daly for their magnificent questions and coordination of the evening.
Solemn Evensong and Te Deum This year marks the 500th anniversary of the first printed publication of the Greek New Testament in 1516. This edition was prepared by Desiderius Erasmus and published in Basel, Switzerland. Later editions of Erasmus’ text became the basis for English translations, such as Tyndale’s and the King James Bible. This anniversary— together with the 550th anniversary of Erasmus’ birth on 27 October 1466— will be celebrated with Evensong and a Te Deum on 30 October. The preacher will be our regional bishop, the Rt Rev’d Dr Michael Stead, who is himself a noted Biblical scholar.

WEEKDAY SERVICES
SUNDAY NOTICES
Our Lady of Walsingham & Marian Lecture 22 October The feast of Our Lady of Walsingham will be observed on Saturday 22 October. Sung Mass with the Gregorian Schola will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Mass will be followed by a buffet brunch in the hall, and a Marian Lecture. This year’s lecture will be given by the Very Rev’d Dr Doru Costache, a protopresbyter of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia and senior lecturer in patristic studies at St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College, Redfern. Following is information about the lecture. The Entry of the Theotokos in the Temple: Interiorising an Orthodox Festival In the Orthodox Church, the festival of the Entry of the Theotokos (Mother of God) in the Temple is celebrated on 21 November. It is the equivalent of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on the same date in Western tradition. The festival is based on the apocryphal Gospel of James, which presents Mary as being welcomed, and living, at the Temple. Based on the hymns and New Testament readings in the Orthodox liturgy for the festival, Dr Costache will propose that it has an interiorised meaning. It is not so much that the Theotokos entered into the Temple; rather she has entered the state of—she has herself become—the Temple of the Incarnation. He will also address a further level of interiorisation by introducing a theme from St Symeon the New Theologian (949–1022), according to whom all Christians are called to become theotokoi (bearers of God).
