God of all the living, in the resurrection of Christ Jesus you have given us the promise of life which death itself cannot destroy: in the strength of this unshakeable promise, give us a new heart to live, even now, as your new creation. We ask this through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST Reading

Haggai 1.15b- 2.9 In the second year of King Darius, in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the Lord; work,

for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts, according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear. For thus says the Lord of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendour, says the Lord of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of hosts. The latter splendour of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the Lord of hosts. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm.

PSALM 145

1. I will exalt you, O God my king: I will bless your name for ever and ever. 2. Every day will I bless you: and praise your name for ever and ever. 3. Great is the Lord, and wonderfully worthy to be praised: his greatness is past searching out. 4. One generation shall praise your work to another: and declare your mighty acts.

CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney

Mass Readings 5. As for me, I will be talking of the glorious splendour of your majesty: I will tell the story of your marvellous works. 17. The Lord is just in all his ways: and faithful in all his dealings. 18. The Lord is near to all who call upon him: to all who call upon him in truth. 19. He will fulfil the desire of those that fear him: he will hear their cry, and save them. 20. The Lord preserves all those that love him: but the wicked he will utterly destroy. 21. My mouth shall speak the praises of the Lord: and let all flesh bless his holy name, for ever and ever.

Second reading 2 Thessalonians 2.1-5, 13-17 As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory 4

of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia. Jesus Christ is the first born of the dead; glory and kingship be his for ever and ever. Alleluia!

Gospel

Luke 20.27-38 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus, and asked him a question, ‘Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Those who belong to

COmmunion Motet this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die any more, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.’

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

God of mercy, in this eucharist we proclaim the death of the Lord. Accept the gifts we present and help us follow him with love, for he is Lord for ever and ever.

COMMUNION SENTENCE Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. In green pastures he gives me rest, he leads me beside the waters of peace.

This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Communion Motet

O salutaris hostia Thomas Tallis (c. 1505-1585) O salutaris hostia quae caeli pandis ostium, bella premunt hostilia: da robur, fer auxilium

O saving Victim! opening wide The gate of heaven to man below, Our foes press hard on every side, Thine aid supply, thy strength bestow.

Uni trinoque Domino sit sempiterna gloria, qui vitam sine termino nobis donet in patria.

All praise and thanks to thee ascend For evermore, blest One in Three; O grant us life that shall not end In our true native land with thee.

SUNDAY NOTICES National Church Life Survey Next Sunday, 13 November, we will be completing the National Church Life Survey (NCLS) at all services. The NCLS is undertaken every 5 years throughout Australia across most Christian denominations. The NCLS provides valuable information for those making decisions in our national church, but will also greatly assist in the forward planning and development of our parish. CCSL has not completed the NCLS for many years. As our parish would almost certainly be the largest Anglo-Catholic parish in Australia, it is very important that we are represented in the national data. Surveys will be distributed at all services and are completed anonymously. To allow appropriate time for the completion of the surveys, sermons will not be preached, but will be distributed in written form. If you have any questions about the NCLS please speak to one of the clergy or wardens, and please aim to be in church next Sunday so that our data can be as accurate as possible. Asylum Seekers Centre Food Bank Donations Thank you for your continued generous response to the Food Bank appeal. Last financial year the Food Bank gave away 17,700 bags of groceries, so all donations of food and other grocery items are much appreciated. However, if you are finding it difficult to bring heavier or bulky items, especially if travelling to CCSL by public transport, the ASC is happy to receive supermarket gift cards. These are used to buy high demand items such as milk, rice, oil, tinned fish 6

and nappies. If you would prefer to donate this way, please place a gift card in an envelope marked ASC Food Bank and place it in the collection plate. Organ Recital On Tuesday, 8 November at 12pm, our Organ Scholar, Joshua Ryan, will be giving a free organ recital at the Conservatorium of Music, in Verbrugghen Hall. The program includes music by Bach, Messiaen, and Martin and will last approximately 40 minutes. Synod 2016 Report A limited number of copies of the Parish’s Synod report for 2016 will be available at the West Door of the church at the back of the Church. It is available on the church’s website at http://www. ccsl.org.au/notices/ St Laurence House Annual General Meeting Parishioners and supporters of St Laurence House are invited to its 2016 Annual General Meeting in Christ Church St Laurence Hall on Thursday 17 November (enter via Pitt Street). Please join us for refreshments from 6pm with the meeting to start at 6.30pm. Belltower Books Beautiful fine art Christmas cards, including the Art of Earle Backen in a twelve card pack for $16, are available, as are signed copies of Keith Mascord’s books A Restful Faith and Faith Without Fear.
