SENTENCE
May the Lord of peace give you peace at all times in all ways.
COLLECT
Lord God of all the ages, the One who is, who was, and who is to come: stir up within us a longing for your kingdom, keep our hearts steady in times of trial, and grant us patient endurance until the Sun of justice dawns. We make our prayer through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
FIRST Reading
Isaiah 65.17-25 For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I am creating; for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people
be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labour in vain, or bear children for calamity; for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord— and their descendants as well. Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but the serpent—its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the Lord. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm.
Song of Isaiah
1 ‘Behold, God is my salvation: I will trust and will not be afraid; 2 ‘For the Lord God is my strength and my song: and has become my salvation.’ 3 With joy you will draw water: from the wells of salvation. 4 On that day you will say: ‘Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name; 5 ‘Make known his deeds among the nations: proclaim that his name is exalted.
CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney
Mass Readings 6 ‘Sing God’s praises, who has triumphed gloriously: let this be known in all the world. 7 ‘Shout and sing for joy, you that dwell in Zion: for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.’
Second reading
2 Thessalonians 3.6-13 Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, and we did not eat anyone’s bread without paying for it; but with toil and labour we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you. This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia. Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand. Alleluia! 4
Gospel
Luke 21.5-19 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said, ‘As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.’ They asked him, ‘Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?’ And he said, ‘Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, “I am he!” and, “The time is near!” Do not go after them. ‘When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.’ Then he said to them, ‘Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. ‘But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defence in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls.’
COmmunion Motet OFFERTORY SENTENCE
Lord God, may the gifts we offer increase our love for you and bring us to eternal life.
COMMUNION SENTENCE
It is good for me to be with the Lord and to put my hope in him.
Communion MOtet Jesu, the very thought of thee
Edward Bairstow (1874–1946) Jesu, the very thought of thee with sweetness fills my breast; but sweeter far thy face to see, and in thy presence rest.
St Bernard (1090–1153) translated by E Caswall (1814–1878)

SUNDAY NOTICES National Church Life Survey This Sunday, 13 November, we will be completing the National Church Life Survey (NCLS) at all services. The NCLS is undertaken every five years throughout Australia across most Christian denominations. The NCLS provides valuable information for those making decisions in our national church, but will also greatly assist in the forward planning and development of our parish. CCSL has not completed the NCLS for many years. As our parish would almost certainly be the largest Anglo-Catholic parish in Australia, it is very important that we be represented in the national data. Surveys will be distributed at all services and are completed anonymously. To allow appropriate time for the completion of the surveys, sermons will not be preached, but will be distributed in written form. If you have any questions about the NCLS please speak to one of the clergy or wardens. The Rector will give clear instructions in the notices concerning the completion of the survey. The Local Church Code to be included on every survey form is: ANS00601 Organ Recital Next Sunday This month’s recital will be given by former CCSL Organ Scholar Joshua Ryan on 20 November at 2.00pm. Admission is by note donation. Asylum Seekers Centre Food Bank Donations Thank you for your continued generous response to the Food Bank appeal. Last financial year the Food Bank gave away 17,700 bags of groceries, so all donations of food and other grocery items are much appreciated. However, if you are 6
finding it difficult to bring heavier or bulky items, especially if travelling to CCSL by public transport, the ASC is happy to receive supermarket gift cards. These are used to buy high demand items such as milk, rice, oil, tinned fish and nappies. If you would prefer to donate this way, please place a gift card in an envelope marked ASC Food Bank and place it in the collection plate. Synod 2016 Report A limited number of copies of the Parish’s Synod report for 2016 will be available at the West Door of the church at the back of the Church. It is also available on the church’s website at http://www.ccsl.org.au/notices/ St Laurence House Annual General Meeting Parishioners and supporters of St Laurence House are invited to its 2016 Annual General Meeting in Christ Church St Laurence Hall on Thursday 17 November (enter via Pitt Street). Please join us for refreshments from 6pm with the meeting to start at 6.30pm. Belltower Books Beautiful fine art Christmas cards, including the Art of Earle Backen in a twelve card pack for $16, are available, as are signed copies of Keith Mascord’s books A Restful Faith and Faith Without Fear. Christmas cakes are also now available for $25, with all proceeds going to Cana. SUNDAY NOTICES Cana Volunteers As the Cana 2017 roster is being prepared, some natural attrition in our volunteer ranks needs to be addressed. We could use a little more help. If you or someone you know who might be interested (you know, those friends or acquaintances who like what they hear about Cana and say “maybe I could be doing something like that but….”) please note that Cana is ecumenical and, in fact, it doesn’t require a purely Christian or any religious commitment at all, so any non-Christian or nonreligious friends or acquaintances are most welcome. Even if someone is too busy or can’t be sure about an ongoing commitment, they can be placed on a reserve list which is a good way of making a very useful contribution. This could be a very worthwhile pre-emptive new year’s resolution! If possible, every attempt will be made to schedule family and friends together when arranging the roster. The volunteers serve in three main groups: 1. The early volunteers who set up the shelter beds, prepare and serve the meal and clean up the kitchen. The early shift starts about 6.30pm and finishes at 9.30pm.
2. The overnight teams (men only), who start at about 7.30 pm, let the men in at 8.00pm and finish up at about 7.458.00am the next morning 3. The laundry volunteers, who take up and launder a portion of bed linen. Please contact Roger Bayley (0408 660 575 rbayley@bigpond.net.au), the Parish office or clergy if you have any queries. Feast of Nicholas Ferrar The Sydney College of the Oratory of the Good Shepherd invites you to share in the annual celebration of the Feast of Nicholas Ferrar of Little Gidding. Nicholas and his extended family lived a life of prayer as a community in a remote parish in England in the early seventeenth century. A sung Eucharist will take place at 6pm on Monday 5 December at Christ Church St Laurence, Railway Square, Sydney. The preacher this year will be the prior of Sydney College, Fr Ron Henderson OGS. Refreshments in Christ Church hall will follow the service. All are welcome to attend. For any enquiries contact Fr Ron Henderson 9755 9181.
