SENTENCE

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

COLLECT

Eternal God, you exalted Jesus Christ to rule over all things, and have made us instruments of his kingdom: by your Spirit empower us to love the unloved, and to minister to all in need, then at the last bring us to your eternal realm where we may be welcomed into your everlasting joy and may worship and adore you for ever; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST Reading

Jeremiah 23.1-6 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or

be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’ For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm.

Song of zechariah

1 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel: who has come to his people and set them free 2 The Lord has raised up for us a mighty Saviour: born of the house of his servant David. 3 Through the holy prophets, God promised of old: to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, 4 To show mercy to our forebears: and to remember his holy covenant. 5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, 6 Free to worship him without fear: holy and righteous before him all the days of our life.

Mass Readings 7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, 8 To give his people knowledge of salvation: by the forgiveness of their sins 9 In the tender compassion of our God: the dawn from on high shall break upon us, 10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Second reading

Colossians 1.11-20 Brothers and sisters: May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers – all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 4

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia. Blessed is he who inherits the kingdom of David our father; Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Alleluia!

Mass readings OFFERTORY SENTENCE

Ask of me and I will give you the nations for your inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.

When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.’ And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, ‘He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!’ The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, ‘If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself !’ There was also an inscription over him, ‘This is the King of the Jews.’ One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, ‘Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!’ But the other rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus replied, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

SUNDAY NOTICES Blessing of a new Humeral Veil At evensong this evening, a new Humeral Veil will be blessed before Benediction. The new humeral veil is the gift of John Pollard and David Reeder. It is given in thanksgiving for the present clergy and ministry at Christ Church St Laurence. Organ Recital this Sunday This month’s recital will be given by CCSL Organ Scholar Joshua Ryan today, 20 November, at 2.00pm. Admission is by note donation. Asylum Seekers Centre Food Bank Donations Thank you for your continued generous response to the Food Bank appeal. Last financial year the Food Bank gave away 17,700 bags of groceries, so all donations of food and other grocery items are much appreciated. However, if you are finding it difficult to bring heavier or bulky items, especially if travelling to CCSL by public transport, the ASC is happy to receive supermarket gift cards. These are used to buy high demand items such as milk, rice, oil, tinned fish and nappies. If you would prefer to donate this way, please place a gift card in an envelope marked ASC Food Bank and place it in the collection plate. Book Launch As well as the launch of Fr John Spooner’s book this evening, next Sunday after High Mass there will be a launch of the book, My Christian Journey: in places lived by Dr Marianne Dorman. All are welcome. Cana Volunteers As the Cana 2017 roster is being prepared, some natural attrition in our volunteer ranks needs to be addressed. 6

We could use a little more help. If you or someone you know who might be interested (you know, those friends or acquaintances who like what they hear about Cana and say “maybe I could be doing something like that but….”) please note that Cana is ecumenical and, in fact, it doesn’t require a purely Christian or any religious commitment at all, so any non-Christian or nonreligious friends or acquaintances are most welcome. Even if someone is too busy or can’t be sure about an ongoing commitment, they can be placed on a reserve list which is a good way of making a very useful contribution. This could be a very worthwhile pre-emptive new year’s resolution! If possible, every attempt will be made to schedule family and friends together when arranging the roster. Please contact Roger Bayley (0408 660 575 rbayley@bigpond.net.au), the Parish office or clergy if you have any queries. Feast of Nicholas Ferrar The Sydney College of the Oratory of the Good Shepherd invites you to share in the annual celebration of the Feast of Nicholas Ferrar of Little Gidding. Nicholas and his extended family lived a life of prayer as a community in a remote parish in England in the early seventeenth century. A sung Eucharist will take place at 6pm on Monday 5 December at Christ Church St Laurence, Railway Square, Sydney. The preacher this year will be the prior of Sydney College, Fr Ron Henderson OGS. Refreshments in Christ Church hall will follow the service. All are welcome to attend. For any enquiries contact Fr Ron Henderson 9755 9181.

Fr John Spooner, who is well-known to parishioners at CCSL, has recently published a new book entitled The Afterlife. We are honoured to be hosting the informal launch of this new book after Evensong on Sunday 20 November. Fr John Spooner has very generously committed the proceeds of this book to support the work of St Laurence House. Please join us on November 20 for Evensong and the book launch.
