SENTENCE Isaiah 2.3
Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.
COLLECT
Faithful God, whose promises stand unshaken through all generations: renew us in hope, that we may be awake and alert watching for the glorious return of Jesus Christ, our Judge and Saviour, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and for ever. Amen.
FIRST Reading 7.00am 7.30am 9.00am 10.30am
6.30pm
Readings: The Revised Common Lectionary in NRSV (1997), Mowbray, London. Introit, Collect and Psalm: A Prayer Book for Australia (1995), Broughton Books, Sydney. Propers: The Roman Missal (1969 & 1983), E.J.Dwyer (Aust.). Reproduced with permission.
Isaiah 2.1-5 The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not
lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord! For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm.
Psalm 122
1. I was glad when they said to me: ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’ 2. And now our feet are standing: within your gates, O Jerusalem; 3. Jerusalem which is built as a city: where the pilgrims gather in unity. 4. There the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord: as he commanded Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord. 5. There are set thrones of judgement: the thrones of the house of David. 6. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: may those who love you prosper. 7. Peace be within your walls: and prosperity in your palaces. 8. For the sake of my kindred and companions: I will pray that peace be with you. 9. For the sake of the house of the Lord our God: I will seek for your good.

Mass Readings Second reading
Romans 13.9-14 The commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet’; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. Brothers and sisters, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.
For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake, therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
OFFERTORY SENTENCE

COMMUNION SENTENCE
The Lord will shower his gifts and our land will yield its fruit.
Gospel

Advent Prose Stephen Cleobury (b. 1948) Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour forth righteousness: let the earth be fruitful, and bring forth a Saviour. Be not very angry, O Lord, neither remember our iniquity for ever: thy holy cities are a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation: our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee. We have sinned, and are as an unclean thing, and we all do fade as a leaf: our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away; thou hast hid thy face from us: and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities. Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know me and believe me: I, even I, am the Lord, and beside me there is no Saviour: and there is none that can deliver out of my hand. Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, my salvation shall not tarry: I have blotted out as a thick cloud thy transgressions: fear not for I will save thee: for I am the Lord thy god, the holy one of Israel, thy Redeemer.

SUNDAY NOTICES Book Launch After High Mass today there will be a launch of the book My Christian Journey: in places lived by Dr Marianne Dorman. All are welcome. New Parish Trust Ordinance The Diocese has passed a new ordinance governing the leasing of the parish’s properties. The ordinance is in the form that was proposed by the parish and displayed on the church noticeboard. It comes into effect on 1 January 2017. So ends a process that lasted six months and required intensive work by the wardens in the last two months. The outcome is very satisfactory for the parish. For the first time, we have established a formula by which the whole range of our property costs are set off against our lease income. Though it appeared possible that we would have to pay over a much increased proportion of our lease income to the Diocese, the operation of the formula results in a total payment that is the same as at present in dollar terms. We have also been able to continue to direct our payments to our preferred units within the Diocese, namely Anglicare and the Endowment of the See. That endowment supports the work of the bishops, including our own regional bishop, Dr Michael Stead. Throughout the negotiation of the ordinance, Bishop Michael gave the wardens valuable advice on how to draft and present our case. He showed himself to be highly expert in the issues and a strong protector of the parish’s interests. We all have reason to be thankful for Bishop Michael’s support.

All are welcome; the setting is of the Vespers of the Blessed Virgin. The music for the service - consisting of the Vespers setting, a short motet and several hymns - is provided by members of both our own choir and of other church choirs in Sydney. If you would like to sing on this occasion, please contact the Director of Music, Neil McEwan: n.mcewan@ccsl.org.au . Asylum Seekers Centre Food Bank Donations Thank you for your continued generous response to the Food Bank appeal. Last financial year the Food Bank gave away 17,700 bags of groceries, so all donations of food and other grocery items are much appreciated. However, if you are finding it difficult to bring heavier or bulky items, especially if travelling to CCSL by public transport, the ASC is happy to receive supermarket gift cards. These are used to buy high demand items such as milk, rice, oil, tinned fish and nappies. If you would prefer to donate this way, please place a gift card in an envelope marked ASC Food Bank and place it in the collection plate.
SUNDAY NOTICES you or someone you know is interested in lending a hand please contact our coordinator (see details below) please note that Cana is ecumenical and, in fact, it doesn’t require a purely Christian or any religious commitment at all, so anyone interested in helping us is most welcome. If you are too busy and can’t be sure about an ongoing commitment, you can be placed on a reserve list and help out when available and when needed. If possible, we’ll attempt to roster you together with a friend or partner you may want to bring in. The volunteers serve in three main groups and are rostered on one night a month or less: 1. The early volunteers set up the shelter beds, prepare and serve the meal and clean up the kitchen. That shift starts about 6.30 pm and finishes about 9.30pm 2. The overnight teams (men only) start at about 7.30pm, let the men in at 8.00pm and finish up at about 7.458.00am the next morning. 3.The laundry volunteers take up and launder a portion of bed linen.
A sung Eucharist will take place at 6pm on Monday 5 December at Christ Church St Laurence, Railway Square, Sydney. The preacher this year will be the prior of Sydney College, Fr Ron Henderson OGS.
