SENTENCE

God has reconciled us to himself through Christ, and given us the ministry of reconciliation.

COLLECT

God of compassion, you are slow to anger, and full of mercy, welcoming sinners who return to you with penitent hearts: receive in you loving embrace all who come home to you, and seat them at your bountiful table, that, with all your children, they may feast with delight on all that satisfies the hungry heart. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST Reading

Joshua 5.2-12 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites a second time.’ So Joshua made flint knives, and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath-haaraloth. This is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: all the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the warriors, had died during the journey through the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt. Although all the people who came out had been circumcised, yet all the people born on the journey through the

wilderness after they had come out of Egypt had not been circumcised. For the Israelites travelled for forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, the warriors who came out of Egypt, perished, not having listened to the voice of the Lord. To them the Lord swore that he would not let them see the land that he had sworn to their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. So it was their children, whom he raised up in their place, that Joshua circumcised; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way. When the circumcising of all the nation was done, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed. The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt.’ And so that place is called Gilgal to this day. While the Israelites were encamped in Gilgal they kept the passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of Jericho. On the day after the passover, on that very day, they ate the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. The manna ceased on the day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had manna; they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. The psalm is sung at Solemn High Mass.

Mass Readings PSALM 34

11. Come, my children, listen to me: and I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12. Which of you relishes life: wants time to enjoy good things? 13. Keep your tongue from evil: and your lips from telling lies. 14. Turn from evil, and do good: seek peace and pursue it. 15. The eyes of God are on the righteous: and his ears toward their cry. 16. The Lord sets his face against wrongdoers: to root out their memory from the earth. 17. The righteous cry; the Lord hears it: and frees them from all their afflictions. 18. The Lord is close to those who are broken-hearted: and the crushed in spirit he saves. 19. The trials of the righteous are many: but our God delivers us from them all. 20. He guards all our bones: so that not one is broken.

Second reading

Colossians 3.12-17 As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; 4

and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. At Solemn High Mass, the Tract is sung as the Gospel procession is made ready.

Tract 1 2 3 4 5

Those who put their trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion: which cannot be shaken, but endures for ever. As the mountains stand about Jerusalem, so stands the Lord about his people: from this time for-ward, for ever more. For the sceptre of wickedness shall have no sway over the land apportioned to the righteous: lest the righteous set their hands to do evil. Do good, O Lord, to those who are good: to those that are up-right in heart. As for those who turn aside to crooked ways, let the Lord lead them away with the evil-doers: and in Israel let there be peace.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Praise and honour to you Lord Jesus Christ. I will rise and go to my father and tell him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. Praise and honour to you Lord Jesus Christ.

CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney

Mass Readings Gospel

Luke 2.33-35 The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. And the child Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed— and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

Lord, we offer you these gifts which bring us peace and joy. Increase our reverence by this eucharist, and bring salvation to the world.

COMMUNioN SENTENCE

Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.

This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Pastoral Care Group The provision of pastoral care is a long standing tradition of ministry here at Christ Church St Laurence. We are pleased to announce the formation of a pastoral care group, which under the leadership of Fr John will seek to broaden the number of the people visited and increase the frequency of visits. The existence of this group will not reduce the pastoral visiting by our clergy. Sonya Gillies has kindly accepted an invitation to coordinate our group and she is currently coordinating the 6

initial visits of the group. The team of pastoral cares will continue to grow. Please speak to Fr John if you would like more information. St Laurence Music Inc In 2016, SLM Inc continues to be actively involved in providing the funds for the post of Organ Scholar and five Choral Scholarships at CCSL.
