There is no doubt that Alaric Sanders is an exceptional student – his perfect IBDP score of 45 and swag of Subject Prizes attest to that – however for Alaric the most memorable moments from his time at St Leonard’s College came from activities outside the academic program. From playing a Russian florist as an extra in a play and delivering two lines “in the most atrocious Russian accent you’ve ever heard”, to playing bassoon in the St Leonard’s Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony and serving on Student Council, Alaric ensured that he maintained a healthy balance between study and leisure activities right through to the end of year 12. “It’s never as productive as you think it is to lock yourself away working non-stop. Two years is quite a long time to be constantly torturing yourself and it won’t necessarily improve your final score,” he says. For his academic success Alaric thanks his parents who provided a lot of support. He also thanks his teachers saying that the one-on-one mentoring and close relationships he built with all of his teachers were extremely valuable and appreciated. “One of the best things about St Leonard’s is the tight community and that it truly recognises that excellence is something to be celebrated rather than shunned,” says Alaric. On choosing the IBDP he remarks that the course teaches one a lot about self-reliance and is really good preparation for university. Alaric has been offered a place to study a Bachelor of Science through the Chancellor’s Scholars program at the University of Melbourne. Receiving a perfect IB score didn’t change his plans. “While some people with 99.95 might tend to do Medicine or Law, I recognised that my passion was Science.” While he’s not yet sure what he wants to major in, Alaric is considering pure physics or something engineering-based and hopes to go on to complete a Masters degree, possibly overseas.
VCE Dux - Jordan Loschiavo ATAR 97.75
Christopher Snitkjaer
IBDP Score of 44 (ATAR 99.85) Christopher joined St Leonard’s College in year 11 and quickly proved himself to be a strong all round student. As part of the IBDP he studied Economics, Language and Literature, Maths, Music, Physics and Spanish (Ab Initio) and volunteered at the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda. He won subject prizes for Language and Literature and Music in his final year.
Jordan came to St Leonard’s College in 2007 as a year 5 student. Throughout his time in the Middle and Senior Schools he was an active participant in the College’s cocurricular program, enjoying success in a wide range of pursuits. Respected and regarded by his peers and teachers alike, his friendly, down-to-earth demeanour saw him elected to the position of Deputy College Captain in his final year. Jordan studied English, Economics, Specialist Maths, Maths Methods and German towards his VCE, and his excellent results have secured him a place in his preferred study option of a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne in 2015. Speaking with Principal Stuart Davis, Jordan remarked that his teachers and parents had been an incredible pillar of support during his VCE studies. He also emphasised that the College’s extensive range of opportunities for development outside of the academics helped keep him grounded and balanced in what is often an intense and stressful year for students.
Kate Matthews
IB Score of 44 (ATAR 99.85) Kate came to the College in year 7 and as well as excelling academically was involved in a range of student leadership and social responsibility programs. In year 12 she served as a member of Student Council, a role which included organising the Bangladesh Dinner and Senior Formal. Our Academic Programs St Leonard’s College offers both the VCE and IBDP as pathways to tertiary education. The VCE is a flexible course with English the only compulsory subject. This allows students to tailor the course to meet their interests and future goals by either specialising in one particular subject area or choosing subjects from a range of disciplines. The IBDP seeks breadth, with students required to take subjects from areas such as Science, Mathematics, Humanities as well as at least one foreign language. In addition all students complete three core subjects, which allow them to undertake creative, active and service-oriented activities. In an increasingly connected world, school leavers no longer compete just with peers from other Victorian and Australian schools, but with students globally. In recognition of the IBDP’s academic rigour, many of the world’s leading universities offer advanced standing or credit to IBDP graduates. A study by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) in the UK examined the characteristics and trends of around 6500 IB students, compared to A-level and other student groups with similar qualifications, at tertiary education institutions. The study showed that IB students are more likely to enrol in a top 20 institution, receive honours degrees or awards, continue on to further studies, and be employed in graduate level positions and higher paid occupations (HESA 2011). St Leonard’s College introduced the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in 1982. Over 30 years of experience and an excellent ongoing relationship with the International Baccalaureate Organisation ensure our IB students are provided the best support and tuition available.
