LETTER RIP

WHO ARE WE & WHY ARE WE? Dear Readers, What you now hold in your hands is the very first edition of the St. Louis Public News. Congratulations on your choice to pick us up and give our writers a chance to impress, inform and entertain, after all, we are an arts and entertainment newspaper. Now our job is to continue to earn your loyal readership. Part of that is publishing thought provoking articles. Another part of that is writing pieces that will Ken Petty make you think, not tell you what to think. And yet another part of our job is to continue to pursue wrong and expose it, find cool things and give it an audience. That is what we intend to do with the Public News, St. Louis’ Public News. I can hear what you are probably thinking, ‘Great! Another liberal rag!’ But you are incorrect. We will cover both liberal AND conservative AND libertarian points of view in our editorial/opinion pieces. We will not just put forward a news article for the simple reason to get you to adopt our point of view on any of it. If anything, we are going to be more Libertarian (Live and Let Live) in our presentation. This newspaper wants to engage conversation. Thoughtful discussion which is important in today’s very polarized political climate. If things continue the way they have, it won’t get any better without someone starting up a dialogue. We can do that. Now, who are we, or more directly, who the heck am I? My name is Ken Petty. Born in Kansas and moved to St. Louis at the age of three. Attended Hazelwood West (Class of 1978) as well as Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University both Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses. I pursued Journalism, Radio/Television and Business Management degrees. I

worked in radio throughout the 80s and 90s finishing up my radio “career” in 1994. In 1996, I started working toward owning my own publication. I started by working for the Kansas City Pitch Weekly learning the distribution channels of an alt-weekly. My first newspaper launch was with New Rio Times in McAllen, Texas. Soon after, I started a Corpus Christi newspaper called CityTalk. In 1999, my most successful paper, at the time, River City Times in Cape Girardeau was born. In 2003, I moved the Times to St. Louis and renamed it The Metro I, to avoid problems with the already established Riverfront Times. In 2004, I relocated to Houston, Texas and by 2006 relaunched a newspaper called Public News. The Public News used to be the longest running alt-weekly in Houston before it folded in 1999. Public News was a great name and had fantastic branding. I secured the name and moved forward with publishing a new version of the Public News for Houston. Our version of Public News in Houston kicked off in 2006 and with a side bar during the recession, resumed in 2013 and continues to this day. However, after a marriage and all my kids being grown, I really had no more reason to stay in Houston than I did to resist coming back to my hometown, St. Louis. So I put the Houston newspaper in the hands of writers that I had been working with and came home to replicate that success. So, here we are. Ready to show off my hometown to folks visiting St. Louis for the first time or for the umpteenth time. Thank you for being a part of our launch. Please talk with us and let us know how we are doing and how we can do better. We are YOUR St. Louis Public News. By the way, we are looking at building a team at Public News, so send us your resume and see if you are a fit with our new family. Letters to the editor can be emailed to us at: editor@stlouispublicnews.com or snail mailed to us at: PO Box 270036 St. Louis, Missouri 63127

wants to bring to the table as a legislator? “Based on my background. My parents were teachers, many in my family are teachers, I’ve taught music lessons. Education is my number one issue. My frustration is how ignorance, from a social aspect, behavioral aspect, has become so common. It flies in the face of what we learned in fourth grade or even tenth grade. It’s a big problem in our world. The stakes are huge at this time in human history. As a society we cannot afford to be ignorant. This is the safest time in all of human history. In some ways it is also the most risky. It’s been said that with great power comes great responsibility. With that responsibility you need knowledge and wisdom in order to wield the power.” Health care is Kiehne’s second major issue in his campaign. Kiehne believes that people need a basic level of health care and that it should be the responsibility of society to provide it. “Being healthy seems so basic to me. If we are healthier, number one, we will be happier, more prosperous and more productive. Number two, health care is administered in such a way that it does not help the people that, in theory, it was intended to help. The cost of health care can be very prohibitive to have access to good quality. It care can be very challenging, depending on how much of a premium you can pay or will pay and how much coverage you get with that.” “We have to find other options. Being realistic to get us from where we are now to where we need to be, will be very challenging. How can we chip away in making people able to afford to be healthy without being wealthy to afford it or breaking the bank and becoming bankrupt just to be

www.stlouispublicnews.com

healthy. This is where education and health care come hand in hand.” Kiehne’s third issue is regarding jobs. “We need skilled laborers, we need skilled workers, we need skilled administrators, we need skilled entrepreneurs. A lot of those skills and abilities come from getting a good education. You don’t even need a high school education necessarily to become a successful entrepreneur. Some individuals are very good at seeking out information so they can educate themselves.” Kiehne also lifted up the value of formal education so that individuals have a basic knowledge of math, can spell and can write. “If people are more educated and have a better skill set, they are going be successful in finding a quality job.” So what happens to Kiehne after the election cycle is over? “I have always advocated for people that do not have a voice. That won’t change. I now see another realm that I can serve in to advocate for people that still do not have a voice. I want to help move people toward being nicer to each other. Some people can’t wait another two years to get people to help them, so I may run again.” “Right now, people are looking for a life raft. They are looking for a way to save themselves. I want to help bring the tide up. I want to seek out win-win situations. I want to help people make more money, I want to do public service, it should be a sacrifice.” After the election, Kiehne does not anticipate measuring for curtains (in a new office), but will continue to fight for the forgotten, the ignored and those lost in the cracks of society.

OPINION

PROPOSITION A

SHOULD MISSOURI REMAIN A RIGHT-TO-WORK (FREE) STATE?

yes

With the relentless fear mongering and campaigning regarding Proposition A, Unions would have you believe that keeping Prop A would cause Unions to vanish in the night. This is just not true. The fact is that, nothing will change. Unions will continue to exist to serve their members and other people will still enjoy the right-to-work. It’s pretty simple. However, in pursuing a story, a journalist’s first instinct is to ‘follow the money.’ It’s no different with the current debate. The unions are worried over the loss of revenue. Revenue that is vital to buy/influence/persuade politicians to do what unions want. Forget about the workers. They are only a means to an end. This used to not be the case. I will admit that in the late 1800s and early 1900s unions provided a great service to labor and did much to improve the lives and fortunes of workers. Fairer wages, better working conditions, pensions, weekends and holidays off, et cetra were the benefits unions provided through collective bargaining. Unions worked hard to represent the laborer, and earn the trust needed to survive as a union. Unions are big business for labor and they leverage that to win favorable concessions for their memberships. No strong arm tactics were needed and unions were successful in negotiating with big business. Franklin Delano Roosevelt started the National Labor Relations Board in 1935, as a part of his New Deal initiative, that effectively began to neuter the power of big labor unions. The federal government got in the game and

became big labor’s main competitor. So, how does a labor union compete? I would suggest unions show off how strong and smart their workers are. Labor union are better suited to meet labor needs? This newspaper uses a union shop to print our paper as opposed to going south to the hill country to scout and secure non-union labor. I see the value in union labor. I just don’t understand why labor wants to use the power of government to kill right-to-work competition. Big labor used to invest in their members success through training, education and mentoring so that these members become the best of the best at what they do. In states that force workers to join a union (re: pay dues) under compulsion instead of willfully, unions get lazy and entitled. They quit competing because if someone wanted to work, these people would have to pay unions for the ‘privilege’. The unions become to new robber barons. States with right-to-work laws have lower costs of living. States with compulsory union membership, prices for all goods and services are higher. Twice in this nation’s history that I can recall where union negotiated failed to provide for their members to which they were negotiated. Big Steel in the 1990s and Big Auto in the 2010s. They were both bailed out by, you guessed it, the US taxpayer. So, don’t buy into the lie that keeping Prop A will kill labor unions. It won’t. The sun will still come up. Workers will still get to their closed shops as union workers. Nothing changes. Except unions will have to step up their competitive edge to stay relevant in the 21st Century.

Vote NO on Proposition A! I was having a conversation with some friends over the weekend and they brought up the fact that they live in a neighborhood with a Home Owners Association. I asked them what their fees gave them that the neighborhood down the street didn’t offer. They told me that they have a playground for their kids, a walking path and are in the planning stages of building a swimming pool. They said that the neighborhood had rules about parking, minimum house size requirements etc. They went on to tell me that these amenities helped keep the property values higher than the neighborhood down the street and for those reasons don’t mind paying their Home Owners Association Fees. They looked at the HOA fees away to protect their investment (their home) unlike the neighborhood down the street without an HOA. I asked them what happens if someone moves into the subdivision, uses the amenities that their HOA fees cover but refuses to pay their fees? They told me that the HOA puts a mechanic’s lien against their property and then publish a list of non-dues paying residents when they send out their quarterly statements. I asked if they thought it would be fair if the government forced the HOA to allow residents to use all the amenities that

the HOA provided even though they refused to pay the fees? They said that wouldn’t be fair to the residents that pay the fees. I asked what they thought about the upcoming vote on Proposition A (Right to Work). They said no one should be forced to pay union dues if they didn’t want to. I explained to them that the union dues that the members pay gives them things like job safety, higher wages, medical insurance, vacation pay, holiday pay, sick pay etc. I went on to tell them that those benefits helped maintain a higher standard of living than the factory down the street that doesn’t have a union. I told my friends that Federal Law forces the union to represent the non-dues paying members the same as the dues paying members and reminded them of how they thought it would be unfair if the HOA was forced to allow the use of their amenities by the nonfee-paying members. Suddenly their eyes lit up and they exclaimed; “Hey, the union dues are like our Home Owners Association Fees! They provide a higher standard of living and our HOA fees help provide higher property values.” Proposition A is wrong for all working families in Missouri vote NO on Prop A on August 7th! ASK JODY

THE PROFESSIONAL STUDENT & THE GIRLFRIEND PROBLEM

Dear Jody, I’m freaking out here. I’m a 26-year old college senior in my last semester of school and just found out that I will be short one class of graduating. Why I am freaking out is that my dad, who has been funding my education, told me that if I don’t finish school this year, he’s going to kick me out of the house. Another reason that he is kicking me out is because I refuse to show him my grades. Granted he paid all my tuition, but come on now, I’m an adult. I should be able to keep my grades from him if I want to, right? Besides, they are pretty bad. I’m skating by as it is. What do you suggest? --The Ungraduate

Dear Jody, My band is pissed off at our lead singer’s girlfriend. She comes to our practices and goes through our stuff when we are in the rehearsal space working on our show. She has also interrupted our practice for stupid things, like needing a ride to the store for cigarettes or booze. Our lead singer is also our key songwriter and we don’t want to rock any boats because he gets really temperamental about his woman. We’re just tired of getting ripped off when our backs are turned and interrupted when trying to get our practice time in. What should we do? --A Different Drummer

Dear Ungraduate, For someone who claims to be an adult, I do believe a bit of maturity is lacking here. You said it yourself that your dad has been paying for your education, and obviously he has let you live under his roof all this time. I can only imagine that your dad feels like you are not willing to grow up, and he is right to establish boundaries with you so that you will be more likely to reach your potential. If you want to continue to live at your dad’s and finish school (and have him foot the bill), then you need to comply with the rules he has put forth. You should show him your grades and plead your case that you need just one more class to graduate. Maybe he will be willing to compromise with you and let you stay on until you finish that one last class. You should get a job (because you will have time to work since you’ll only have one class) and offer to pay rent to your dad for the extra time you will be living at his house. And by all means, do your best in that class and finish well! By doing all those things, you will show your dad and prove to yourself that you are on your way to becoming a mature adult. --Jody

Dear Different Drummer, Wow, sounds like your lead singer needs to get a different girlfriend...or y’all get a different lead singer! Since either one is unlikely to happen, you and your bandmates must somehow deal with the situation. It’s not fun walking on eggshells around people. It may be better to gently confront your lead singer and risk his temperamental side to hash out some compromises. It would be best to have the conversation when everyone is well-rested and relaxed. Don’t start with an accusatory tone, but approach him with some positives about his girlfriend...hopefully there are at least one or two positives. Be solution-minded, and keep emotions in check. Be realistic in what you hope to accomplish. You may not get everything resolved with one conversation, but open communication is so important in relationships. In the meantime, lock your stuff up in your car when she is around and be flexible. Instead of viewing her interruptions as such, use that time to chill with your bandmates, catch up on email, or read a good book. Hopefully the interruptions will become few and far between. Rock on! --Jody

One of the Guy’s Hair Shop managers, Fenton native Kelsey Heisserer, sat down with the Public News to talk about the hair business. Kelsey started with The Guy’s Hair Shop 6 months after they opened in December of 2011. She is a long-time hair stylist previously with Hair Salon for Men and was drawn to The Guy’s Hair Shop because she enjoys cutting men’s hair and liked the small business concept of The Guys Hair Shop. “Andy, the owner, had a dream about opening up his own hair shop. He does not do hair, he’s a mechanic,” Kelsey explained. The girls run the shop. Andy is rarely there. What is the biggest draw for men? “We are very personable. We’re not a corporate store that treats customers like a

chop shop when it comes to cutting hair.” Kelsey added, “Here we get to know our customers and we are family oriented.” Even though The Guy Hair Shop promotes and advertises men hair cuts, they also cut women and children hair as well. “We do a lot of kid hair cuts here.” The Guys Hair Shop employs three manager/stylists, four additional stylists and three receptionists that do not cut hair. How does a typical appointment run? “First you check in with the receptionist, Walk in or appointment. Your stylist will walk you over to their station and give a consultation and a nice hair cut. We always give a shampoo, hot towel and a cold beverage with every hair cut. Even for the little guys (kids) too!” The average visit is only 20 minutes. The Guys Hair Shop is open Monday through Friday 9am to 7pm, Saturdays 9am to 6pm. Appointments are encouraged as walk-ins tend to have to wait a while to be seen. You can also book your appointment on their website. They offer special rates for seniors and first responders.

JOE BOCCARDI’S BRINGS TASTY ITALIAN FOOD TO ST. LOUIS Forty-seven year old Joe Boccardi is a second generation Italian restaurant owner. It’s a family-owned restaurant that bears his name. Well actually, his father’s name, Joe Boccardi Jr. Joe Boccardi’s started in January of 1971 by Joe Jr. in Eureka and since has grown to three additional locations in the south part of the St. Louis metro area, Webster Groves, Columbia (Illinois) and now Fenton. “Fenton is our fourth location for Joe Boccardi’s. It’s more of a carry-out, delivery location with a small dining area which we enjoy when customers choose to eat here” The other three Joe Boccardi’s have a full service bar and larger dining area that can hold a hundred or more patrons. Joe Boccardi’s parents were both born in Italy, southern Italy to be exact as some recipes are different from region to region. The family recipes served at Joe Boccardi’s come courtesy of his mother. Joe Boccardi’s signature dish is its pizza and is best known for it. “We started with pizza and over time added a full service menu with everything. Our chicken dishes are excellent. We do sandwiches here. The other locations do not.” Joe Boccardi mentioned that they offer eight to ten different Italian sandwiches and that they use Boar’s Head premium products for their sandwiches.

“We’ve got great salads, great pastas. Really everything.” Joe Boccardi shows his passion for his pizza and how it is made. “We use Provel cheese which everyone knows is a St. Louis cheese. Our pizza dough is hand-mixed and rolled every day. So it is the freshest. Pizza is our biggest seller.” Joe Boccardi was born in March of 1971 just a few months after his father launched the restaurant. So he has been involved in the restaurant businesses since his early years. His brother Mario runs the original location in Eureka. The Fenton location also offers daily specials. If you are not sure what to enjoy at Joe Boccardi’s the daily special is a great guide to fine Italian dining options. “Only us and the Watson (Webster Groves) location offer daily specials,” Boccardi added. He hopes that one day his kids will pick up the passion that drives his family since 1971. Joe Boccardi’s is open 7 days a week at 11 am and closes at 9pm on weekdays and 11pm on weekends. In Fenton, Joe Boccardi’s is located at 958 Brookwood Center and their phone number is (636) 326-2563. You can also find them on the web at www.joeboccardis.com

COVER STORY

DO THE BEATLES STILL MATTER? Over the last decade it’s been pretty difficult to NOT hear about the Beatles 50th Anniversary unless you unplugged every electronic device, turned your smartphone to Airplane mode and stayed in bed. Since February of 2014, the Beatles were all the talk. They were praised on how they did this or how they did that. They were praised on how their music nearly changed the world. The younger baby boomer set remembered how they pined, in the 1970’s, for the Fabs (an endearing moniker given to the Beatles) to reunite. Even after losing John Lennon in 1980 to a madman and George Harrison in 2001 to cancer, the surviving Beatles, Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Ringo Starr (yes they both got knighted), continue to tour and record new music albeit solo. When I say ‘tour’ I mean two and a half hour rock shows. This wouldn’t seem so incredible, but considering Paul and Ringo are both nearing than 80, the

endurance feat is staggering. In 1994 and 1995, there was a miniBeatles frenzy when new music was recorded and, along with archival recordings, released in four 2-CD releases (Live at the BBC and the Anthology recordings). It was Beatlemania for everyone born past the Beatles 60’s hey day. But why? Why do the Beatles mean that much? What’s the big deal? Why can’t we just let them retire and allow ourselves move on to something or someone else? Why? Because it is culturally impossible. The Beatles were, as Joe Biden would say, a freaking big deal. Let’s talk about the music and the time frame that this music was released. In the 1960’s most bands were ‘singles’ bands. Music groups would record two songs, slap one on each side of a 45rpm piece of plastic and release it as their current hit single. The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones,

PUBLIC NEWS

The Kinks even Elvis and Roy Orbison were singles artists. Once in a while, an artist would release an LP (long player) that would consist of one or two of their singles and the rest filler material. The Beatles did things differently. Instead of albums with their hit single included, they released albums without the single. Their thinking was ‘why make the fan buy music twice?’. In the US, Beatles record label Capital Records had different ideas and butchered the UK albums and added the hit singles. Beyond the early years, the individual members of the Beatles grew into their own distinct personalities. John Lennon, originally known as the ‘smart Beatle’ grew into the role of activist for peace and also became quite aware politically. Paul McCartney, originally known as the ‘cute Beatle’ grew into the role of entertainer.

www.stlouispublicnews.com

George Harrison, originally known as the ‘quiet Beatle’ became a friend to many other musicians and helped them to make their mark in the world with their art and without any thought of taking credit for the help. George Harrison is notable for being the first person to organize a rock concert as a mean to being awareness and resources to help the less fortunate. Ringo Starr, originally known as the ‘funny Beatle’ dabbled in acting from time to time as well in music. Ringo had the unique ability to work with all three former Beatles while tensions between them were high, especially between Lennon and McCartney. The Beatles are also significant in that they brought about cultural change in a very tumultuous time, the 60s. Their haircuts and matching suits gave way to longer hair and even longer beards as well as some of the most colorful outfits.

FOUR BEATLES ALBUMS THAT SHOULD SOLO BEATLES ALBUMS THAT SHOULD BE IN EVERY MUSIC LOVERS COLLECTION BE IN EVERY MUSIC LOVERS COLLECTION An exercise of fun for Beatles fans is the ongoing and various debates centered around the music and personalities that made up the Beatles. Debates such as “Who is the 5th Beatle?”, “How would you take the White Album (a 2-LP set) and make it a single album,” and “If the Beatles reunited for a one-off concert, what songs would they perform?” The Public News is pleased to enter the fray and answer the debate question, “What Beatles albums are essential for any music lover?” We’ll begin in chronological order and put forward “A Hard Day’s Night”. Now, we must specify, we mean the UK version of the album, not the US version. You see, prior to Sgt. Pepper (we’ll get to that one soon enough), the Beatles American record company, Capital, made it a habit of taking the UK albums and the non-LP singles and creating their own Beatles albums. Sometimes, the label would go as far as altering the sound by adding reverb or echo that was foreign to what the Beatles originally envisioned when they recorded the songs. In the 60’s, American music buyers were generally unaware of there being a more definitive version of the Beatles work. The US version of “A Hard Days Night” featured eight Beatles songs along with four orchestral versions of Beatles tracks from the namesake’s movie. “A Hard Day’s Night” hold another distinction. It’s the first Beatles album to feature all original songs written by the band members. The next pair albums have jostled between them as the all-time best Beatles album. We think they both deserve the recognition. After all, this is our debate! “Revolver”, released in 1966, shows the Beatles in transition from a live mop top group, to a studio band. Long-time Beatles producer George Martin, begins to shine as the “5th Beatle” in his string arrangements as well as production techniques. One listen to Their music once focused on love, or the loss of love, and gradually morphed into songs about being a Paperback Writers, or about Rain, Silver Hammers, Piggies and even Revolution. Every Beatles album was anxiously

“Revolver’s” predecessor “Rubber Soul”, and then a listen to “Revolver”, shows a much different band and sound as the Beatles began to evolve into their distinct personalities. The album “Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” is the Beatles attempt at a lose concept album. Their thinking was to create an album as a band other than the Beatles. In fact, the name Beatles appears nowhere in print on the cover art, save the name in flowers. “Sgt Peppers” was the first Beatles album from both sides of the Atlantic to match the other, no more differences between the UK and US versions. Although many bands in later years would cite “Sgt Peppers’ as an influential work, no single track was released as a 45rpm record during the albums original run on the charts. “Abbey Road” is the Beatles final studio statement that almost never was. After the disastrous Get Back sessions in January 1969, three members of the Beatles quit the band at one time or another. John specifically considered the Beatles to be done and started releasing recordings with his new wife Yoko Ono. Paul McCartney called George Martin to oversee another Beatles album, their last. Martin agreed as long as the members of the band got along and work together. With all four members in agreement with this arrangement and knowing that this was going to be their last album as a group, the triumphant “Abbey Road” made its way into history as the definitive ending statement on the Beatles. “Abbey Road’ was the most sophisticated and polished record in the entire Beatles canon. Even though the Get Back recordings of 1969 made their way out after “Abbey Road”, “Abbey Road” was the Beatles final musical statement to the world.

Even though the Beatles quit making music together in 1969, does not mean that they quit making music all together. Outside of the group construct, all four members of this British band continued to make great music. Some of the best “solo” albums included group efforts, such as George Harrison’s Traveling Wilbury’s, Paul McCartney’s Wings and John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band.

greeted by an adoring fanbase upon their release. The final bow for the Beatles was the film soundtrack to Let It Be, a film that documented a band working on new songs and in many respects documents the greatest band in the world breaking up.

The Beatles have been cited by many musicians, since then, as influences. Squeeze, XTC, Tears For Fears as well as the Electric Light Orchestra all tried to sound like a contemporary version of the Beatles that probably should have been if the Beatles

a fair amount of filler on the two main discs and the ‘bonus’ disc is basically a throw away. Song for song, Thirty Three & 1/3 is a gem from start to finish. Critics calling the record his finest since his 1970 three-record set. On Thirty Three & 1/3, Harrison has quit preaching about his sweet Lord, and started writing great songs in the way he did on Abbey Road. Five love songs, a great blues song, a toe tapper about possessions and two parody songs that were both released as hit single adorn the albums ten tracks.

Ringo Starr - Ringo (1973) Beatles drummer Ringo Starr started his solo career late if you don’t count his two pre-breakup albums Sentimental Journey, a standards album and Beaucoup of Blues, a country western album. His only recorded post-breakup ventures prior to 1973 were two well received singles, “Back Of Boogaloo” and “It Don’t Come Easy.” Ringo was significant because it was the first album since Abbey Road that all four Beatles appeared on the same album, although never on any one track. The closest that ever came was on the album opener “I’m The Greatest” which features John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo and Billy Preston. Paul and his wife Linda McCartney appear on one track “Six O’Clock”. Harrison appears on a few of the tracks on Ringo including the hit single “Photograph.”

John Lennon - Shaved Fish (1976) As John Lennon embarked on his retirement from the music industry, his label cobbled together one last album. Of the solo Beatles, Lennon was the only one to consistently release non-album singles. Capitol/Apple decided to grab all of these singles to compile a “Greatest Hits” album for Lennon. It was the only greatest hits package released in Lennon’s lifetime. Where Lennon’s studio work was uneven, Shaved Fish saved the best for last. Even the protest song, “Woman is the N****r of The World” shines among his more famous work.

Paul & Linda McCartney - Ram (1971) George Harrison - Thirty-Three & 1/3 (1976) Lead Guitarist George Harrison started his solo career with a bang, a three-record set called All Thing Must Pass. Why that album is not considered as essential is because there is

The parting words of the Beatles on their last recorded studio album, Abbey Road, we are reminded that “in the end, the love you make is equal to the love you take.”

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown by Mark Crampton

When I moved from southern California to Little Cypress High School in Orange, Texas in the summer of 1969, I brought a California sense of music and dance that was pretty far out for many of the country folk there! In fact, I remember being filmed (by a handheld 8mm movie camera, no less!), dancing at one of the first school dances I went to! Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Iron Butterfly, Arthur Brown – LCHS just was not ready for me or my music! Wait a minute, you say. Zep, Doors, you’ve heard of them, but who is Arthur Brown? Well, Arthur Brown was the original, the very first shock-rocker, the first selfdescribed ‘VooDoo Dancer’, wearing face makeup, fancy costumes, and a great flaming metal helmet in his act! Arthur Brown was one of the very first artist to use detailed stage props to set the stories of his songs. Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, KISS, King Diamond, Marilyn Manson, all owe their shock-rock concept to Brown! Brown also had an unbelievable four octave singing voice, and was noted for both the low gutturals and high-pitched screams and howling in his music – a precursor to heavy metal. Brown’s greatest hit, Fire with his band ‘The Crazy World of Arthur Brown’ in 1968, started with him screaming “‘I am the god of hellfire!”, which became somewhat of a catchphrase of the time. Brown became known and billed as ‘The God of Hellfire’, which he still uses to this day. Brown‘s outlandish stage performances became legends of the time. During one of

AND CHANGE YOUR BUSINESS FORTUNES FOR GOOD! his first live performances, at the Windsor Festival in 1967, Brown set himself on fire with his flaming helmet. Audience members doused the flames with beer, and he finished his show – minus most of his hair! (Where have we heard that before, Gene Simmons fans?) Brown often stripped naked on stage (but was only arrested once for this, at a show in Italy - perhaps he gave Jim Morrison this idea), set himself on fire in many of his shows, and frequently set the stage on fire also. Many venues would not book him without requiring extra insurance! Believe it or not, Jimi Hendrix – noted for setting his own guitars on fire on stage – kicked Brown off his tour for setting the stage on fire! Arthur Brown’s next incarnation was in the band ‘Kingdom Come’ from 1970 – 1973, He gained further notoriety for the stage shows, including his simulated crucifixion and heavy drug images. (Shades of Alice Cooper! Why does that sound familiar? ) In 1980 Brown moved to Austin, Texas, and worked as a carpenter and painter, while finishing a Master’s Degree in Counseling. In 1990, Brown opened Healing Songs Therapy in Austin. His therapy procedures included writing a personal song for each patient. In 1996, Brown returned to England and full-time performing. Apparently being true to his roots, at a concert in 2007 he again set himself on fire on stage, and also set another band member on fire! Both continued the show, minus their hair!

3 MARGARITA’S SERVES UP THE ONLY MOM & POP TEX-MEX IN SOUTH COUNTY Do you feel like enjoying authentic TexMex food that is made from the hands of the very people who are from that region? 3 Margarita’s restaurant in Fenton is your destination. Or at least it should be. 3 Margarita’s has been in business for 13 years serving up the only authentic Tex-Mex cuisine in South County. In fact, they are the only locally owned and operated Tex-Mex restaurant in all of South County. Forget Chili’s, 3 Margarita’s is the real deal. I visited their location in Fenton to try out their food. The building’s sign is an indication on how festive the interior looks. It’s as if you crossed into Old Mexico. Most of the servers speak Spanish with some English and Mexican themed music is piped into the dining room. It’s a full experience. Once seated, you are welcomed with a big complimentary bowl of chips and chunky red salsa. I tend to like the more spicy green sauce which has a thinner consistency but still very good! You should never be shy to ask for it, if that is your preference. The restaurant was not fully packed but the servers took care of their tables with efficiency and courtesy, answering food ques-

tions and making recommendations as best they could. I was initially helped by manager Maria Solorio who has been with the restaurant for most of their 13-year existence. When I asked Solorio about which dish would be their signature dish explained that authentic Mexican dishes feature corn tortillas. “Corn tortillas were the only way to eat Mexican food as corn was grown plentiful in the south region of the country. It was when Spaniards came to Mexico that flour tortillas were introduced and became a favorite in the north portion of Mexico which is very arid. Among all their offerings, I selected the Lunchinos Premium Tacos. They were filled with steak, bacon, melted cheese and pico de gallo. I also selected corn tortillas. The platter came with four tacos along with a healthy portion of refried beans and cheese. Over all the experience at 3 Margarita’s was pleasant and will require a return trip to try out a Margarita or two or three.
