LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

THE UNITED STATES AND INTERNATIONAL LAW The United States has created a reputation for itself as a country that backs out of treaties and goes back on its word. If an environment of chaos continues to define the international system, then the system becomes hard to govern and therefore more prone to war. Look at what we are witnessing right now. Saudi Arabia is threatening to develop nuclear weapons if Iran goes nuclear - something the Iran Nuclear Deal was designed to prevent - and the European Union is building up its defenses to counter Russia. In addition, Japan is building up its defenses to counter China and China is building up its defenses to counter its competitors. Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, kept a copy of the writings of Hugo Grotius in his library and worried that our first form of government, the Articles of Confederation, was not strong enough for treaties, or international law. Grotius was an early theorist of the idea of international law, or the idea that nations and establish and follow law. The diplomatic accomplishments kept coming in the early 20th century. President Theodore Roosevelt became the first President to win the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the Russo-Japanese War via arbitration in 1907. In 1899,

Nicholas II, the czar of Russia, convened a peace conference at The Hague with our country in attendance. TR proposed a second and similar conference which met in 1907

In looking at politics in our Trumpian age, one was to ask a question. Where are the ideas of Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the Robert Lansing, FDR, TR, William Jennings Bryan, James Blaine, and Richard Onley?

Are you talking about Slingers in Fenton? I quit going there years ago because of their smoking policy and would be curious if this has changed. It’s my understanding that there is open smoking in Jefferson County.

Jason Sibert, Peace Economy Project

Yes, it was the Slingers in Fenton and I gave them a real quick call asking them about their smoking policy. They said they used to allow smoking but not anymore. And that was a recent change.

LENNON’S BEST SOLO ALBUM? I beg to differ on your selection of 1975’s Shaved Fish as John Lennon’s best solo album (Public News Vol. 1, Ed. 1). However, to get to the omelet you have to sit in a tiny room and smell the last million people’s smoke. I can’t even go into Slingers without getting sick. 3 COMMON DIABETES MYTHS DEBUNKED ence gestational diabetes (diabetes developed during pregnancy) are more likely to develop prediabetes. Additionally, if your baby weighed more than nine pounds at birth, you’re at greater risk, according to the Mayo Clinic. Men, aren’t off the hook. This increased risk extends to the children of women who had gestational diabetes.

Fact: Generally speaking, individuals with diabetes can follow the same healthy diet recommended for the general public and can even enjoy sweet treats in small portions on special occasions. Carbs are a necessary part of a healthy meal plan. Just pay attention to portions. Optimal carbohydrate counts will vary by person, but the American Diabetes Association recommends starting with 45-60 grams per meal, and tweaking depending on how your body responds. Some good carbs to consider? Whole grain breads, pastas, rice and cereals, plus starchy vegetables like potatoes, peas and corn. Fruits, beans, milk and yogurt also count toward daily carbohydrates. On the Nutrisystem D plan, which is designed for people living with type 2 diabetes, milk and yogurt are considered “PowerFuels,” even though they provide some carbohydrates. Many people are advised to enjoy these foods with fruit to prevent nocturnal hypoglycemia.

THE EVOLUTION OF BIRTHDAY PARTIES by Omar Viengar, the stand up encourager I am a believer in birthdays and birthday parties. For a budding narcissists every day may be your birthday but for the humble it’s almost exhausting to have a day dedicated to just you. Some may hide under the bed or some may have confetti drop down on their beds when they awake on their special day. For me I am somewhere in between the humble and the narcissist, the HUMBLE NARCISSIST, not a great super power. Even as a kid birthdays were very complicated for me. When my little sister was born we had very close birthdays. Mom tried one awful time to throw a joint birthday. Half the cake was G.I. Joe and the other Barbie. That would be the anthem of my future parties I am a father of 3 little girls and the pres-

sure is for real. When birthday season arrives; I will have little mini panic attacks that include shortness of breath, thinning of the wallet and weight gain due to stressinduced eating. I myself am cheap and want to do this 80s style, book a room at the finest Chick-fil-A and let the chickens nuggets roll! My wife is more considerate than I am, she wants to include the friends who have invited us and have special gift bags for the kids who attend. The big 40 was coming and my beautiful wife was to plan my birthday party. I was thinking beer, bourbon and heart stopping food. But as my wife pointed out that our friends all have small children so that turned to a inflatable water bouncy house,

juice pouches and cartoons. Did I mention that it rained that day and we hung out in my dank garage while the kids enjoyed AC and cartoons. Shortest 40th birthday party known to man Recently we were invited to a kid’s birthday and I noticed something very odd about this party. We went to a kid’s venue and then were ushered into a kid’s party room. In the center was a long table with chairs and carefully placed party favors the kind Mr. Wonka would be proud of. Being a comedian I see things in a slightly off slanted lens. I went from being a dad in his finest Saturday cargo shorts to patron of a kid zoo. The kids were seated at a table and the hosts were circling the table giving them sandwiches of PUBLIC NEWS

pb&j and assorted chips and juice pouches. Then they came back around after noticing the little darlings slowing down on their prey and it was time for the main course, the cake. All the while the parents were sitting in plastic chairs that surrounded the room looking at their kids eating their lunches. No interaction at all just mutual strangers sitting in chairs watching. I sincerely hope when it’s party season at the Viengar casa we will hold it down with economically practical birthdays and cultural appropriate parties of adult interaction and of course the main course, cake.

Glass allows for wireless charging, better connection signals, bigger display screens, and truth be told, glass feels great and looks beautiful. But these features come with a price -- durability. Compared to metal or plastic, glass cracks, shatters, scratches and can get slippery. Fortunately, there’s guidance available for consumers wondering about the durability of new phones. FAKE ASTROLOGY

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY, WINK WINK by Chris Alvarez

Aries 3/21 - 4/19 People read horoscopes to make some sort of sense out of their love life. You don’t have that problem. You don’t really have a love life and the person you want is probably reading their horoscope for the exact same reason. Some day, dear heart, your paths may cross but not today. Taurus 4/20 - 5/20 Do you ever think that you had lived a prior lifetime? Perhaps as a Duke or Duchess or some other important person? Why do those who claim past lives never come clean about being the dung master, or the janitor, or the king’s taster? Certainly takes the fun out of being able to show someone important in real life with your pretend former life. Gemini 5/21 - 6/20 Your internet fling is about to become more real than you think. Don’t be surprised to learn that your interest is not free of entanglements. And one of those are prime to pay you a visit at work. Those fake glasses, teeth and moustache are going to be your go-to disguise, unless you’re female. Then your MO is to run.

Cancer 6/21 - 7/22 There was this guy who decided to get real about losing weight long before January 1st. And for a while he was successful. He exercised and ate a lot of Subway. Now he’s about to start a 13-year prison sentence for pandering to younger fare. Don’t be like that guy. Be more like Richard Simmons.

Libra 9/23 - 10/22 You’ll meet some new friends. Some of which are experiencing life on the outside for the first time in a while. If they ask you to drive them to the bank, you would be wise to admit that you never got your drivers license. If your new friends press you on the matter, start babbling incoherently, slobber a lot and then start running away waving your hands in the air.

Capricorn 12/22 - 1/19 You’re a spiritually inclined person, but you tend to read these fake astrologies as if they were the real McCoy. Be advised, these are for entertainment purposes only. If I were to jump of the top of Busch Stadium flapping my arms in the air, would you do the same? Then stop taking these things literal.

Leo 7/23 - 8/22 People dig your taste in music and you have no qualms sharing what you like. However you need to not share your love for the avant-guard country that no one ever bought when it was new, nor streams that crap anywhere. You would do well to embrace the tried and true like the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin and possibly Enya.

Scorpio 10/23 - 11/21 The possibility of a new career has got your attention. The temptation of staying where you are in order to make $15 per hour is intoxicating. That was until you saw that your replacement was a robot that does not require Medicare, Food Stamps, or time off.

Aquarius 1/20 - 2/18 Someone important is about to ask you for a favor. Do your best to look good while dodging this request. Remember, not everyone should be more important that yourself. Love and pamper yourself often. Now, get the image of diapers out of your mind.

Virgo 8/23 - 9/22 Ok, I’ve got good news and bad news. First, you are about to embark on a group adventure that you were never really invited to go. The bad news is that the retreat is for the weekend and no one knew that you got locked in the trunk of your bosses car.

Sagitarius 11/22 - 12/21 Getting your crap together with others might stimulate your intellect, imagination, and spirit. No one has the same agenda as yours, but are willing to put up with your BS as much as you put up with theirs. At the end of the week, you will have discovered your soul mate. And it will be in the form of a Google app.

Pisces 2/19 - 3/20 Because you are special, today you might try to secure the perfect job. The one you went to college to prepare for as a career. Liberal Arts is technically a degree and not a career, but with a little stretching of the truth, you just might impress her to join in with her campaign.

JAMES COMEY RECEIVES STANDING OVATION IN SPEECH ON HIS LIFE, LEADERSHIP, AND DONALD TRUMP story and photo by Luke W. Henderson

sion of effective leadership and his belief that “we’ve lost track of what it means to be a leader.” Small quips and pokes at the President were peppered throughout Comey’s speech, describing Donald Trump as the “worst listener in leadership I have ever seen,” (the ability to listen being an essential part of his model of leadership) when compared to George W. Bush, and Barrack Obama, of which the Director stated were “two people I suspect the American people have an appreciation for that they didn’t two years ago.” The audience refused to hold any punches during the question and answer portion, diving straight into the Director’s reopening of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s e-mail server and its effect on the outcome of the election. “I couldn’t find a way out of it,” explained Comey stating how the two options of announcing the reopening or hiding it were both “doors to hell.” It was inquired if he felt responsible for the election of the President to which he replied “I hope I’m not responsible. I secretly hope some political scientist will prove I didn’t,” but that he couldn’t have taken swaying the election into consideration for it would have been “the death of the FBI.”

The election of 2016 had many characters each with their own plunges into the dramatic, the controversial and at times foolishness. Republican candidate for president Jeb Bush blundered by asking his audience to clap during a speech, Bernie Sanders captured audiences on a massive scale with rhetoric against the top 1% of wage earners in the country, and Ben Carson stunned the country when he expressed his belief in the Egyptian pyramids being grain silos built by Joseph. Despite the excitement, none of these characters was more criticized than that of former Director of the FBI James Comey.

The next question that tested the Director’s integrity was about when he began to take notes during presidential meetings, a reference to his leaked memo where Trump had allegedly asked Comey for a pledge of loyalty. “The man lies a lot,” spoke Comey on the President stating that he “was never concerned [Bush & Obama] would lie about me.” He then went into intimate detail of the events leading up to the infamous dinner with the president, relaying the story almost like a crime novella. This response seemed to especially resonate with the audience that were eagerly drinking in the recollection. It was certainly an exciting commencement to what looks to be an immeasurably successful speaker series. Upcoming guests include author of “Still Alice” Lisa Genova, former Governor of Florida Jeb Bush, feminist activist Gloria Steinem and comedian Jay Leno.

KEEPING YOUR HEALTH ON TRACK DURING THE INDULGENT HOLIDAY SEASON parties. Remember, water doesn’t need to be the only source of hydration you think about this season. Soups and purees made from hearty winter vegetables, as well as citrus fruits do the trick, too, and their nutritional properties can help keep you healthy in winter. (StatePoint) The holiday season can be an indulgent one, full of cookies, candies, heavy meals and eggnog. You can also consider giving a honey makeover to all your favorite holiday recipes, including glazes and sauces for meat and poultry, cocktail recipes, and of course baked treats. • Make Substitutions. Other healthful substitutions you can make this holiday season include topping pies with Greek yogurt instead of cream, using apple sauce in place of oil and nut flour instead of white flour in baking, and serving vegetable mash as an alternative to mashed potatoes. • Be Mindful. The holiday party circuit can be dangerous when it comes to making nutritious choices. When you enter a party with a buffet set-up, it can be tempting to reach for the richest foods first. Before indulging in the canapes and Swedish meatballs, try filling up a plate with crudité first. While you’re doing so, get a good look at all the options available. This way, you’ll be more likely to savor choice items you’ll truly enjoy. A joyful holiday season doesn’t mean you must pack on pounds or feel under the weather. By keeping your health on track throughout this indulgent time of year, you can start 2019 with your best food forward.

PERSONALS

MISSED CONNECTIONS

MAN LOOKING FOR LADY COMPANION It seems like most people have paired up for the year except for me. I’m older (45) male, still strong, married once, good job, nice car. I like hiking, fishing and auto facing. I am a moderate St. Louis Cardinals fan and a huge Blues fan. Not very religious but I am getting tired of on-line dating, too many scammers. I am looking for a female (35-45), no kids (I don’t have any either), a non-smoker, no drama, low maintenance and confidant. I’m not too shallow but please be height/weight proportionate. I thought I would give this a try and see what happens. Respond to M-PN001. MAN SEEKING FUN WOMAN I’m going to try this old school personals thing. I am a recently divorced man (37 y.o.) with two teenage boys that I have 50% of the time. I live in West County but travel downtown frequently for business. Looking for a woman near my age for dating and general hanging out. I like wineries and live music. On weekends that I do not have my kids, you can find me hanging out on the Delmar Loop. Respond to M-PN002. MAN LOOKING FOR SPIDERWOMAN Hi. I’m looking for a female that is very active and has time for a guy like me. I’m kinda nerdy in a Big Bang Theory sort of way looking for my female nerdy equivalent. You must know who Dr. Stephen Hawking was and who Dr. Sheldon Cooper is. Anything other than that would be icing on the proverbial comic book store cake. I’m in my twenties and never married! Surprised? Respond to M-PN003.
