Head of School Dear St. Luke’s Community Members, Greetings from the Hilltop. I am honored to present the St. Luke’s 2022-23 Giving Report, which builds upon the strong foundation of 95 years of philanthropic legacy. This report represents the extraordinary investment of parents, trustees, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends, all in support of our mission, students and faculty during the past year. Members of our community continue to invest in our school, supporting a mission that inspires students to aim high, work hard, stretch and achieve without ever losing sight of the importance of laughter, kindness, and self-discovery. What joyful school days I witness as your Head of School! The spirit of giving extends to communities beyond our campus as our students are taught that at SLS, they enter to learn and go forth to serve. We have a lofty goal, as we seek to lift our exceptional school to new heights by realizing the strategic plan initiatives. It is St. Luke’s role to develop the graduates the world needs: educated, moral, altruistic and confident in their ability to contribute distinctive gifts to their communities. Initiatives are being designed that will provide every student with layers of experiences that teach them how to be competent problem solvers and compassionate teammates. Raising these humane leaders is something very much needed in the world. May this report and our shared aims inspire us to dream bigger, reach higher, and continue our shared journey toward a brighter future. Why I Give I spent 7 years at St. Luke’s School, from 6th grade through graduation in 1962. I consider these formative years, under the guidance of Dr. Kidd and other great teachers of that era. I have given to SLS for over 50 consecutive years. Hard to believe but it’s true! It is not how much you donate but the consistency of giving. It becomes habit forming, as I have stated at other times I have spoken about giving. Even after I am gone, the school will continue to get annual donations from a community foundation which will get my assets and distribute them as instructed. We all have good and bad habits. Senior Gift The Senior Gift is an annual St. Luke’s tradition that provides families the opportunity to make a special gift in honor of their graduate. Each Senior Gift has three things in common: it meets a strategic need of the school, it represents the Senior Class in a meaningful way, and it provides an enduring reminder of the graduating class’s time on the Hilltop. The Class of 2023’s outstanding efforts raised $339,346 in gifts and pledges for The Class of 2023 Together Terrace, the 2,400 square-foot stone patio outside the Grey House. Surrounded by nature and featuring a gas fire pit, soothing waterfall, and a view of the property’s ravine, the terrace is a welcoming gathering space, and is a visible reminder of the community-minded spirit of the Class of 2023.

The fund also helps families afford books, transportation fees, and other costs beyond tuition.

Duncan Edwards Waterside School Scholarship Fund Value: $348,139 Established in 2013 to provide scholarship awards to outstanding students coming from the Waterside School in Stamford, CT.

E.E. Ford Foundation Fund for Minority Scholarships Value: $193,256 Established in 1997 to provide need-based scholarships for minority students, grades 9-12.

George E. Stevens Horizons Prize Endowment Value: $1,838,309 Established in 2010 to provide full scholarship support for a Horizons student for up to four years of high school. The prize recognizes students who love learning, demonstrate good character, pursue excellence, and embrace community.

The Hobson Family Endowed Scholarship Fund Value: $1,091,100 Established in 2011 by the Hobson Family, to provide support to an outstanding student from a Hispanic or Latino/a/x background, who has demonstrated financial need.

Mark Davis Impact Fund Value: $1,378,470 Established in 2022, in honor of Headmaster Emeritus Mark Davis, this fund for financial aid is a tribute to Mark Davis’s dual passions for student access to education and institutional sustainability.

Richard Whitcomb Endowed Scholarship Fund Value: $6,503,3623 Established in 2003, in honor of Headmaster Emeritus Dick Whitcomb, to provide need-based scholarships for students based on their ability to make a major contribution to the School. These scholars personify Dick Whitcomb’s passion for academic curiosity, strength of character and co-curricular involvement.

The Teddy Balkind Memorial Scholarship Fund Value: $195,067 Established in 2022 in loving memory of Teddy Balkind ’24, beloved son of Leslie & Buck Balkind and brother of Karey Balkind ’22. The need-based scholarship is awarded to a student who is remarkably kind and joyful and who pursues a personal interest with uncommon passion.

Students Honors & Programs Civil Discourse Endowed Fund Value: $238,316 Established in 2020 through a gift from Jennifer and Graham Foster, to permanently establish The Civil Discourse Speaker Series, which allows St. Luke’s students and community to be exposed to the highest quality lessons in civil discourse. The fund defrays the costs associated with bringing together two parties or sets of experts in their respective fields to publicly discuss an issue with two clearly articulated sides.

Class of 2012 Center for Leadership Speaker Series Endowed Fund Value: $351,595 Established as a legacy gift by the families of the Class of 2012 to help underwrite the Center for Leadership’s speaker series program and support the Center for Leadership’s mission to develop every SLS student’s unique ability to lead and make a difference.

Richard J. Pedrick Endowed Memorial Fund Value: $250,192 Established in 1995, in memory of past parent and former Trustee, Dick Pedrick, "to perpetuate, as a living memory, all that Dick Pedrick stood for." The Richard J. Pedrick award is awarded annually to a graduating senior who exemplifies leadership, dedication, intelligence, athletic participation, good sportsmanship, and love for his/her fellow human beings.

S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award Endowed Fund Value: $63,331 Established in 2012, this award is presented annually to a 9th or 10th grader who possesses good character, has strong leadership potential, and who wants to take on the personal challenge of the Hurricane Island Outward Bound program.

Social Justice Design Based Learning Fund Value: $150,211 Established in 2020 to support existing programs and design-based learning opportunities, such as J-Term and Community Service programs, or to launch new project-based learning initiatives with a social justice or community service focus.

Faculty Honors & Opportunities Chadwick Family Faculty Development Endowed Fund Value: $91,814 Established in 2020 to support projects that advance teaching and learning at St. Luke’s, while enabling faculty to pursue areas of professional interest that are fulfilling to them and help them grow as professionals.

China Care Endowed Chair for Chinese Language Education Value: $968,785 Established in 2006 to fund a Chinese language instructor who is also the coordinator of the St. Luke’s School China Care Club, a student organization which helps further the mission of China Care.

Kontulis Family Faculty Chair Value: $1,240,195 An endowed chair is the highest honor St. Luke's can bestow on a faculty member. Established by the Kontulis Family in 2016, this rotating endowed chair helps St. Luke’s to recognize, retain and inspire top teaching talent. Chairholders serve a two-year appointment and receive a stipend to be used to further a project of their choice.

Tracy B. Duncan Innovation Award Value: $118,595 Established in 2014, in honor of Tracy Duncan, to provide an award to innovative members of the St. Luke’s community whose work has made a significant impact on the student experience and in the development of a culture of innovation at St. Luke’s School.

Celebrating the 2023 Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Fund “Dream Grant” Recipients: Ty Wieland, Cynthia Briggs, and Rich Kaechele For more than a decade, St. Luke’s faculty members have been invited to apply for the annual Faculty Enrichment Award, funded by the generosity of Steve and Liz Goldstone, former St. Luke’s parents. More commonly known as “Dream Grants,” this monetary award allows faculty to pursue a personal project or enriching journey. St. Luke’s is excited to announce the 2023 recipients: Cynthia Briggs, Middle School French Teacher; Ty Wieland, Middle School English Teacher; and Rich Kaechele, Facilities Technician. This summer, Cynthia plans to visit the French island of Corsica — a dream ignited in middle school by her first French teacher, Madame Chevaleau. Cynthia looks forward to exploring Corsica and returning with rich cultural experiences to share with her students. Ty will travel to Vietnam with his spouse, Quoc, and daughter, Isabel. Quoc, who is Vietnamese, left the country with his family in 1975 after the fall of Saigon. Thanks to the Dream Grant, Ty and Isabel can now see Quoc’s country of origin. Rich has a love for the history of American transportation. This fall, Rich and his wife plan to take a road trip out west to explore museums that focus on America’s transportation history, including the Henry Ford Museum, the Gilmore Car Museum, the Harley Davidson Museum, and The National Museum of Transportation.

Alumni Awards Alumni Artistic Achievement Awards

On Friday, March 31, 2023, St. Luke’s honored alumni Lena Parker-Duncan ’10 and William Steinberg ’70 for achievements in their chosen artistic fields. Former Art Department Chair, Susan Cole, introduced Lena and spoke to her accolades, including several Promax and Webby Awards. Lena currently works as an Art Director in the CBS Marketing Department within Paramount, developing key art and creative campaigns for hit CBS Network and Paramount+ streaming shows. She got her start in the entertainment industry working at Warner Brothers in the Worldwide Television Marketing Department, after graduating from Brown University with a degree in Egyptology and Visual Arts. Next, Jim Blakey ’70 introduced William. He joked that “Bill won St. Luke’s awards as fast as they could think them up!”. Though he began his career as a trained architect, William was honored for his work in a myriad of mediums. William explained how his personal style has been consistent over the past 50 years, though he was inspired by a variety of art and artists along the way, which led him from drafting architectural renderings to exploring watercolor, relief prints, etchings, and then eventually bronze sculpture (to see his 2D work transformed into 3D). Lena and William join past Alumni Artistic Achievement Award recipients: Ben Klein ’12, Dominique Bandoo ’09, Marcus Smalls ’90, Jon Salamon ’10, Kent Bloomer ’53*, Payton Cosell Turner ’04, Peter Bush Swanberg ’73, and John Henson ’86. 50 COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

Alumni Inducted into the Richard M. Whitcomb Athletic Hall of Fame

During Homecoming & Reunion Weekend 2022, alumni, faculty, and guests gathered to celebrate the 2022 Inductees of the Richard M. Whitcomb Athletic Hall of Fame. The St. Luke’s Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2011 to “honor the athletes, teams, coaches, and supporters who went above and beyond in bringing recognition, honor, and distinction to the school through their outstanding achievements in the field of athletics.” In 2021, St. Luke’s renamed the Hall of Fame in memory of beloved Headmaster Emeritus Richard M. Whitcomb, honoring his far-reaching and multi-faceted legacy on the Hilltop. The 2022 inductees were Leigh Harter ’50, Amy Towne ’06, and the 2012 Varsity Football Team. Leigh Harter ’50, the committee’s veteran choice, was a standout, multi-sport athlete who played football, basketball, hockey, and baseball during his time at St. Luke’s and joined the Air Force after graduating from college; Amy Towne ’06 was a four-year, three-sport varsity athlete, earning 12 varsity letters in soccer, basketball, and softball; the 2012 Varsity Football Team was NEPSAC Champions and held a nearly perfect record that year. Congratulations to the 2022 Inductees!

Head of School Installation Dr. Mary Halpin Carter

St. Luke’s School officially installed Mary Halpin Carter, Ph.D. as the 11th Head of the School and the first female head since the school’s opening in 1928. Associate Head of School and Chief Financial Officer Julia Gabriele, a 35-year SLS veteran and Class of 2013 and 2015 parent, told the community: “Even as we have grown exponentially in size and reputation… we never lost sight of who we are and who we want to be: A school that believes who you are—your character, your moral compass, your kindness, your willingness to serve others—is every bit as important as your intelligence, your grades, what college you go to, and your professional success.” The history of the school was brought to life by three people who lived it: Guy Bailey, former Assistant Head of School for Teaching & Learning, TaShun Bowden-Lewis ’90, Connecticut’s first Black and first female Chief Public Defender, and Sally Rose Zuckert ’15, a current SLS teacher. Dr. Carter addressed the St. Luke’s community, saying, “Before setting foot on this campus or meeting a single soul, this mission told me everything about what St. Luke’s strives to instill: Love learning, be a good person, take care of each other. Believe in yourself and your ability to lead and make things happen. What a worthy foundation for young lives. The future of St. Luke’s is about building on this mission.” 52 COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

A New Tradition is Born Head’s Holiday

On a chilly February morning, St. Luke’s students began their day with a special surprise. After gathering everyone for “an announcement”, Head of School Mary Halpin Carter, rode into the athletic center in style on a decked-out golf cart. She then announced that today would be Head’s Holiday — “a day where we do not have classes, and instead, we play!” For the entire school day, students, faculty, and staff were smiling and laughing together as they participated in various activities, including ping pong, a bouncy obstacle course, a video game truck, karaoke, arts & crafts, dancing, face painting, and so much more. Most importantly, the St. Luke’s community paused from the normal routine to find joy and camaraderie with their peers. As Dr. Carter shared during her announcement: “One of the most important goals of St. Luke’s Strategic Plan is to fortify the community. We know the SLS community is already strong, but it is considered so valuable that we want to take it to another level. To a level where everybody feels they have a bond (like Hefty has with everyone here). Today, we get to create a new tradition, a tradition that is centered on bonding. A tradition that is centered on playing together and letting our hair down. The best kind of school to go to is a school where people aren’t just friendly, but where people seek to be friends — students, faculty, staff all friends with one another.” 54 COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

Reigniting Tradition St. Luke’s Founder’s Cup

Founders’ Cup is an Upper School tradition that originally began during World War II, and was relaunched in 2013 by Ben Decatur ’14 and Sebastian Bates ’14. This year, the Student Council revived the competition once again, to build the sense of camaraderie and school spirit on the Hilltop. Upper School was divided into three houses: The Von Fabrice House (Maroon), The Blakely House (White), and The Kidd House (Gray). Throughout the school year, teams had many point-earning opportunities: student organizations attached point values to their respective events, there were games during Town Meetings, points were awarded for semi-formal attendance, and much more. The final week of the competition, Founders’ Week, was filled with activities including flag football, volleyball, student vs. faculty kickball, and more! This year’s Founders’ Cup winner was announced during Town Meeting in May. While the Kidd House (Gray) had a substantial lead entering Founders’ Week, the Von Fabrice House (Maroon) pulled ahead with the final victory! Alumni Updates In December of 2022, Clinton Cross ’51 published his book My Grandfather Oliver Harlan Cross and the Ku Klux Klan, sharing the tale of his grandfather who fought the Klan in Waco, Texas during the second Klan’s apex of power in the State. Clinton has published several books, including Overcoming Great Odds The Life of William Tillett Watt: (And Overlook’s Ghosts) and Eliza Sims and Two Libraries, both available on Amazon.

Caroline Lau ’22 was elected as captain of the 2023-2024 Northwestern Women’s Basketball Team, as a freshman.

Business executive/pilot/author turned singer/songwriter, Peter Gray ’93, released his rock song “When You Say” in May of 2023. It was quickly picked up by radio stations throughout the USA, including New York’s 90.7 WFUV, Connecticut’s 95.9 The Fox and Florida’s Sunshine 96.7FM WMTB LP, amongst others. In the spring of 2023, three St. Luke’s alumni were inducted into the Beta chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Stanford University. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa celebrates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, and champions freedom of thought. Dominic DeMarco ’18 (Computer Science major, French and Music minor), Georgia Rosenberg ’19 (Political Science major, executive editor of The Stanford Daily), and Jamie Ullman ’20 (Computer Science major) each received this honor in their respective fields.

In January of 2023, the documentary “Stranger at the Gate” was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Documentary Short Film, featuring Anna Bick Rowe ’08 as executive producer. Erin Trew ’90 retired after 20 years with Stamford PD (2019) and now working for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center as a Senior Counterterrorism Instructor in Glynco, Georgia.
