Reflecting on the 2023-2024 academic year, my heart is full of gratitude for the warmth, generosity, and spirit of belonging that define our school. St. Luke’s School is more than a place of learning it is a home where every student is nurtured, challenged, and encouraged to lead with humanity.

A LETTER FROM THE 2023-2024 BOARD CHAIR
Dear St. Luke’s Community,
As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I am grateful for the privilege of being part of the St. Luke’s School community and the St Luke’s mission. That mission — to provide an exceptional education that inspires a deep love of learning, a strong moral compass, the commitment to service, and the confidence to lead — guides our daily lives and is evident in the curiosity of our students, the dedication of our faculty, and the support of our families.
Our talented faculty and staff go above and beyond to create an innovative curriculum that both challenges and inspires students. This includes interdisciplinary projects and hands-on learning experiences. Recent service projects have enriched our students’ lives and strengthened our community connections, demonstrating our commitment to moral leadership and service.
My family has experienced this firsthand. Meghan and I have marveled as our three children flourished in a nurturing environment that encouraged them to explore new interests while excelling independently. Each of them has found meaningful opportunities that foster growth and curiosity.
At home on our Hilltop, we’ve had a transformative year. We’ve made significant strides in our strategic plan, focusing on enhancing educational programs, deepening community engagement, and ensuring sustainability for future generations. Our commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration empowers our students to explore their passions and cultivate their strengths within a supportive environment.
Looking ahead, our strategic goals include expanding our resources and facilities to support diverse learning needs and fostering an inclusive community where every student feels valued. As the educational landscape evolves, we remain committed to adaptability and excellence, ensuring that we never lose sight of our mission within a community where curiosity thrives, moral leadership is nurtured, and future leaders are inspired to serve.

The SLS Giving Report is a celebration of our community. St. Luke’s wishes to honor the remarkable life of Tim Lewis P ‘23, ‘23, ‘25.
A beloved husband and father, Tim and his family joined St. Luke’s in 2016. We were privileged to have him serve as a dedicated Trustee and an active member of the Finance and Investment Committee, the Equity and Inclusion Committee, and the Executive Committee. Tim was deeply committed to community service, and our students, faculty, staff, and school have greatly benefited from his exceptional warmth, wisdom, kindness, intelligence, and humor.
Our hearts remain with the Camerota-Lewis family.
New Trustees for 2024-25
Jon Kaplan, P ‘26, ‘26, ‘30
Jon is the chief revenue officer at MoneyLion. Previously, Jon was the global chief revenue officer of Pinterest. Jon was on the leadership team that took the company public. Before Pinterest, Jon spent nearly thirteen years at Google, joining the company in 2004. Jon began his career as the first business hire at Economist.com and worked in sports marketing at SFX Sports, the University of Louisville and the PGA of America. Jon was previously on the board of The Ad Council, a non-profit advertising organization focused on tackling the most pressing issues facing the country, and The Mobile Marketing Association. He is currently an advisor to Compound Ventures and Oceans Ventures, helping entrepreneurs grow and scale their companies. Jon received his Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from Ohio Wesleyan University, and masters in Sports Administration from Ohio University. He lives in Darien with his wife, Kate, and their children, Finn ‘26, Grace ‘26, and Campbell ‘30.
Amy Gabriele Owens ‘94, P ‘24, ‘24, ‘27
Amy has been actively involved in the St. Luke’s community, serving as a class parent, working with the school store, and volunteering her time with the Annual Fund, where she also served as the new parent co-chair. Additionally, she has also held several volunteer positions at Fairfield Country Day School and Trinity Church in Southport. Amy is also involved with the Team Jesse Foundation alongside her husband, Kevin, which provides education and support to families of fallen soldiers. Amy grew up in New Canaan and attended St Luke’s, graduating in 1994. Amy then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in English at Lafayette College. After working as the assistant to the Head of School at St. David’s School in Manhattan, Amy received a master’s degree in secondary education from New York University. She then taught fifth grade at St. Aloysius School in Harlem, an independent, Catholic Pre-K through grade eight school dedicated to educating inner-city children. Amy later moved to their all-girl middle school, the Thea Bowman Academy, where she taught English and history for seven years. Amy and her husband, Kevin, have lived in Fairfield since 2006 and returned to the Hilltop in 2020 with their children, Leslie ’24, MJ ’24, and Harrison ’27.
Jeff Sanders P '21, '24, '28
Jeff is vice chairman and co-managing partner of the Global CEO & board practice for Heidrick & Struggles. He serves as a member of the firm’s Global Management Committee. He previously served as managing partner of the North American CEO practice. Prior to that, Jeff served as the global leader for the firm’s software practice. He joined Heidrick & Struggles in 1997. Jeff serves on the advisory boards of Carrick Capital, Growth Curve Capital, and Smith Point Capital. He is also on the Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities of New York. He is a graduate of the University of Arizona, where he received a bachelor’s in business administration. Jeff lives in New Canaan with his wife, Jennifer, and their children Jack ‘21, Ella ‘24 and Caroline ‘28.

The Senior Gift is a cherished St. Luke’s tradition, addressing key school needs and serving as a lasting reminder of each graduating class’s impact. The Senior Gift Committee focused on wellness, community service, and honoring the memory of Teddy Balkind ’24.
The Class of 2024 Wellness and Community Wall, located in the main lobby, warmly welcomes students, families, and alumni. It features a guest sitting area and an interactive monitor showcasing students in wellness and community service activities. These Senior Gift contributions supported the Teddy Balkind Memorial Scholarship Fund and the creation of the Class of 2024 Nurturing Wellness and Communities Fund.

Financial Aid & Scholarship
Class of 2021 Experience Fund Value: $935,125
Established as a legacy gift by the families of the Class of 2021 to allow students to participate in grade- and class-level trips, special athletic events, performing arts opportunities, and global exchange trips. The fund also helps families afford books, transportation fees, and other costs beyond tuition.
Duncan Edwards Waterside School Scholarship Fund Value: $348,139
Established in 2013 to provide scholarship awards to outstanding students coming from the Waterside School in Stamford, CT.
E.E. Ford Foundation Fund for Minority Scholarships Value: $193,256
Established in 1997 to provide need-based scholarships for minority students, grades 9-12.
George E. Stevens Horizons Prize Endowment Value: $1,838,309
Established in 2010 to provide full scholarship support for a Horizons student for up to four years of high school. The prize recognizes students who love learning, demonstrate good character, pursue excellence, and embrace community.
The Hobson Family Endowed Scholarship Fund Value: $1,091,100
Established in 2011 by the Hobson Family, to provide support to an outstanding student from a Hispanic or Latino/a/x background, who has demonstrated financial need.
Mark Davis Impact Fund Value: $1,378,470
Established in 2022, in honor of Headmaster Emeritus Mark Davis, this fund for financial aid is a tribute to Mark Davis’s dual passions for student access to education and institutional sustainability.
McIntire Family College Opportunity Fund Value: $348,139
Established in 2012, in honor of Gavin McIntire ’08, to provide financial aid for juniors and seniors with college search-related expenses.

Richard Whitcomb Endowed Scholarship Fund Value: $6,503,3623
Established in 2003, in honor of Headmaster Emeritus Dick Whitcomb, to provide need-based scholarships for students based on their ability to make a major contribution to the school. These scholars personify Dick Whitcomb’s passion for academic curiosity, strength of character and co-curricular involvement.
The Teddy Balkind Memorial Scholarship Fund Value: $195,067
Established in 2022 in loving memory of Teddy Balkind ’24, beloved son of Leslie & Buck Balkind and brother of Karey Balkind ’22. The need-based scholarship is awarded to a student who is remarkably kind and joyful and who pursues a personal interest with uncommon passion.

Civil Discourse Endowed Fund Value: $238,316
Established in 2020 through a gift from Jennifer and Graham Foster, to permanently establish The Civil Discourse Speaker Series, which allows St. Luke’s students and community to be exposed to the highest quality lessons in civil discourse. The fund defrays the costs associated with bringing together two parties or sets of experts in their respective fields to publicly discuss an issue with two clearly articulated sides.
Class of 2012 Center for Leadership Speaker Series Endowed Fund Value: $351,595
Established as a legacy gift by the families of the Class of 2012 to help underwrite the Center for Leadership’s speaker series program and support the Center for Leadership’s mission to develop every SLS student’s unique ability to lead and make a difference.
Class of 2013 Student Life Endowed Fund Value: $318,874

Parsons Family Women & Leadership Endowment Fund Value: $250,192
Established in 2013 to support initiatives related to women and leadership, including but not limited to program/conference support, individual awards, and/or scholarships for female students with leadership potential.
Richard J. Pedrick Endowed Memorial Fund Value: $250,192
Established in 1995, in memory of past parent and former Trustee, Dick Pedrick, "to perpetuate, as a living memory, all that Dick Pedrick stood for." The Richard J. Pedrick award is awarded annually to a graduating senior who exemplifies leadership, dedication, intelligence, athletic participation, good sportsmanship, and love for his/her fellow human beings.
S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award Endowed Fund Value: $63,331
Established in 2012, this award is presented annually to a ninth or tenth grader who possesses good character, has strong leadership potential, and who wants to take on the personal challenge of the Hurricane Island Outward Bound program.
Social Justice Design Based Learning Fund Value: $150,211
Established in 2020 to support existing programs and design-based learning opportunities, such as J-Term and Community Service programs, or to launch new project-based learning initiatives with a social justice or community service focus.

China Care Endowed Chair for Chinese Language Education Value: $968,785
Established in 2006 to fund a Chinese language instructor who is also the coordinator of the St. Luke’s School China Care Club, a student organization which helps further the mission of China Care.
Dr. Kidd Excellence in Teaching Award and Endowment for Faculty Value: $1,005,986
Established in 2002 to provide support to faculty and faculty-related initiatives such as professional development. This includes the Dr. Kidd Excellence in Teaching Award, given to a full-time teacher who exemplifies the ideals of St. Luke’s through excellence in the classroom, service to the total School community, and dedication to the well-being and growth of their students.
Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award Fund Value

Kontulis Family Faculty Chair Value: $1,240,195
An endowed chair is the highest honor St. Luke's can bestow on a faculty member. Established by the Kontulis Family in 2016, this rotating endowed chair helps St. Luke’s to recognize, retain and inspire top teaching talent. Chairholders serve a two-year appointment and receive a stipend to be used to further a project of their choice.
Tracy B. Duncan Innovation Award Value: $118,595
Established in 2014, in honor of Tracy Duncan, to provide an award to innovative members of the St. Luke’s community whose work has made a significant impact on the student experience and in the development of a culture of innovation at St. Luke’s School.

Community Highlights
Investment Through Philanthropy:
Creating Leaders, Innovators, and Problem Solvers
St. Luke’s School is dedicated to preparing students for the future. This past year, we enhanced our DesignLab offerings significantly, thanks to the Ullman Family DesignLab Innovation Fund. This fund aims to enrich the student experience, spark enthusiasm for STEM-related fields, and elevate St. Luke’s reputation as a leader in design thinking.
Our new eighth-grade computer science and engineering course integrates computer science with hands-on projects in robotics. With support from the Ullman Family DesignLab Innovation Fund, we acquired STEMI Robot kits, enabling students to design, build, and program their own robots. This hands-on experience cultivates essential skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity.
Additionally, the fund enabled us to purchase a Glowforge Pro Laser Cutter, a state-of-the-art tool increasingly utilized in educational environments. This resource will be pivotal in outfitting classrooms beyond the DesignLab, supporting our growing Computer Science and Engineering Department. Students in grades 8-12 will have the opportunity to engage with the laser cutter across various courses, from introductory to advanced levels. This initiative aligns with our commitment to expanding programming in line with the Emerging Technology focus in St. Luke’s Strategic Plan, which emphasizes integrating technology and innovative thinking across the curriculum.
With these new resources, St. Luke’s is poised to inspire the next generation of thinkers and creators. We are deeply grateful for this philanthropic support and excited about the future it enables.
Diving Into Artificial Intelligence TeachingfortheFuture:

Developing best teaching practices around technologies as they emerge is no simple task. St. Luke’s has been ahead of the curve in understanding the immediate impact of artificial intelligence on education. We responded by quickly developing a prevention and exploration strategy. Clarity around pitfalls and opportunities enabled us to develop a comprehensive emerging technologies core curriculum and unleashed our creative faculty. Below are just a few examples of how teachers and students are diving into the possibilities:
Chatting with Molière
In Jon Shee's French IV and Honors French IV classes, students learned about the French playwright Molière prior to reading and doing a deep-dive into one of his most wellknown comedies, "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme." After studying bits of Molière's biography, they then used ChatGPT as a group activity in class to do a mock interview of the long-deceased Molière by directly asking "him" questions to better understand Molière's life from the playwright’s perspective.
Picture Perfect Math
In Cali Touloumes’ algebra II with trigonometry class, students used the AI tool, PhotoMath, in their work on binomial expansions. Touloumes wrote different problems on the whiteboard, and students worked in small groups to solve them. When the students finished, they checked their work using PhotoMath, a phone app that allows you to scan the problem and get step-by-step directions to ensure you understand the solution.
When asked about the pros of using PhotoMath, one student said, “It was quick, easy, and correct.” Ms. Touloumes also engaged students in reflection on the ethical use of tools like PhotoMath, asking them to consider when they need to disclose its use to their teachers.
Newton’s Laws in Action
In Mark Chuhta and Susan Bralower’s science classes, eighth graders used AI in their Newton’s Law Poster Project. Students were tasked with applying Newton’s laws of motion to a subject they chose (e.g., basketball or dog walking) and then teaching the laws to fifth graders. They had to create a poster for each law, stating the law, selecting an image of the law in action, and explaining how the law connects to the image they chose.
First, students used ChatGPT to interview Sir Isaac Newton. Rather than just reading about him in a book, the AI interview helped to engage students in a fun way that let them feel as if they were talking to someone from the 1600s. Next, students could use Canva or ChatGPT to create the image they wanted to include. Using different prompts, they explored the iterative process to get to the image that best fit the needs of their posters. Lastly, they used ChatGPT to create audio scripts on a fifth-grade level to best explain their project to their audience.
We look forward to bringing you more examples of how we leverage technology for learning that lasts. To help navigate teaching and learning on the edge of innovation, St. Luke’s developed guidelines for AI use. New language is featured in the student and employee handbooks, and we have incorporated AI into the honor code pledge.
Head of School, Mary Halpin Carter launched the St. Luke's Head's Holiday last school year during her first year as Head of School. “The goal is to remind everyone that school should be joyful,” Dr. Carter said.
“Today, we will build and strengthen relationships among faculty, staff, and students through play and fellowship. By shifting from our everyday routines into new, smile-inducing situations, we elevate school spirit and create memories that will remain long after students leave the Hilltop.”
For the entire school day, students, faculty, and staff moved from one fun-filled activity to another, choosing their own adventure. The options were endless and included an inflatable obstacle course, glow-in-the-dark mini golf, karaoke, a video game truck, board games, puzzles, chess, a craft room, a movie theater, and even a petting zoo! They enjoyed delightful snacks such as cotton candy, a movie concession stand, and a candy truck.

On Friday, May 31, 2024, St. Luke’s held its 95th Commencement Ceremony, a momentous occasion that marked the achievements of the 86 members of the Class of 2024. During their time at SLS, these students cultivated a deep love of learning, explored what it means to be ethical and empathetic leaders, uncovered their interests and talents, and forged their own paths to discover who they are and who they want to become. This fall, they will continue their journeys at prestigious schools worldwide.
During the ceremony, Head of School Mary Halpin Carter told the students, “Class of 2024, I encourage you to take a deep breath, quiet your mind, and absorb all that you can of this day. You will want to remember this moment and the wise advice that people who love you hope to impart. You will want to remember your senior self and your Class of 2024 identity. Whether you realize it or not, you leave a collective mark on the Hilltop.”

For more than a decade, St. Luke’s faculty and staff members have been invited to apply for the annual Faculty Enrichment Award, funded by the generosity of former St. Luke’s parents Steve and Liz Goldstone. More commonly known as “Dream Grants,” this monetary award allows faculty and staff to pursue a personal project or journey that will enrich their lives.
St. Luke’s is excited to announce the 2024 Dream Grant recipients: Maggie Lauer, Middle School Band Teacher; Sean Lynch, Upper School Art Chair & Art Teacher; and Valerie Parker, Visual Media Director.
Maggie will embark on a two-week cultural immersion in the Republic of Georgia. As an adopted person with Georgian biological parents, but limited exposure to Georgian culture, she feels a deep curiosity and connection to her heritage. This grant will provide Maggie with the opportunity to explore the country, its people, and its traditions firsthand.
To honor the memory of her late mother, Valerie will travel to Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in The Bahamas, a place her mom frequented for many years. Valerie’s two sisters (who include SLS Director of Community Connections Kate Parker-Burgard) will accompany her as they explore and discover all that inspired their mother to make this annual visit to the ashram.
After researching his great-grandfather's journey from a poor tenant farmer in Roads, Cahersiveen, Ireland to North America, Sean was inspired to bring his family to County Kerry, Ireland. With grant funds, they plan to explore their family's former residence, the nearby workhouse, and the church they once worshiped. Sean has already connected digitally with relatives in County Kerry and hopes to meet them in person during his visit.
This year’s Edward B. Blakely Distinguished Faculty & Staff Award was presented to St. Luke’s Associate Head of School and Chief Financial Officer Julia Gabriele during the 22nd annual State of the School on Oct. 12.
“This year's winner, in many ways, is St. Luke’s,” said Head of School Mary Halpin Carter when introducing Gabriele at State of the School. “Our recipient, perhaps more than any other individual, has been responsible for turning dreams and ambitions for this campus and community into reality. And she’s only just begun.”
The Edward B. Blakely Distinguished Faculty & Staff Award is named after the school’s founder and presented annually to a St. Luke’s faculty or staff member who exemplifies the school’s founding values of excellence and character. Gabriele has dedicated nearly 35 years to the St. Luke’s community and served as a teacher, a coach, Director of Admissions & Communications, Dean of Studies, Head of the Upper School, and Assistant Head of School, and—what she lovingly calls her most important role—Cheese Club Advisor. She has also been a St. Luke’s parent and grandparent. Gabriele taught almost every subject and earned a reputation for disguising important lessons as great fun. She also founded the tradition of Senior Tea, an opportunity for seniors, faculty, and staff to join together for conversation and a cup of tea. In addition to being an unforgettable educator, she’s known as a faithful and constant protector of the school — a woman of remarkable integrity,” Carter added. “Her integrity is exemplified in our squeaky-clean audits, care that every dollar is spent wisely and without waste, and the belief that rules apply equally to all. Julia is the embodiment of a strong moral compass and a powerful role model for all, especially the young people we care so deeply about.”

Dear fellow St. Luke’s alumni,
Reflecting on the 2023-2024 school year, I am again proud to be an alumnus of St. Luke’s School. This year showcased the incredible spirit of our alumni community, as we came together at events such as homecoming, regional gatherings in Manhattan and Boston, and our new alumni hockey and field hockey games We also honored the legacies of our esteemed faculty members, Bucky Buchanan and Camille DeMarco Havens, who dedicated 40 and 42 years to St. Luke’s.
In May, we welcomed 86 new members into our alumni family with the graduation of the Class of 2024 This remarkable class demonstrated a strong commitment to our community through record-breaking participation in their Senior Giving Project, thereby beginning a tradition of philanthropy to St. Luke’s.
I am proud to share that our alumni community achieved a record-breaking participation rate of 10% in our philanthropic efforts this year! This commitment to giving ensures that future generations of St Luke’s students will benefit from the same exceptional education and experiences that we cherished during our time on the Hilltop
Looking ahead to the 2024-2025 year, I am optimistic about continuing our tradition of philanthropy and our collective adoration of St. Luke’s. I encourage all of us to engage with our alma mater through the support of the St. Luke’s Fund and by participating in our alumni gatherings

Max Tucci ‘98 opened his eponymous resturaunt, Tucci NYC. Max also serves as a third-generation partner at Delmonico’s and authored “The Delmonico Way”.

Throughout his extraordinary life, Roby shared his wisdom and experiences with countless members of our community. His steadfast love and encouragement for students, faculty, coaches, trustees, and Heads of School spanned over 77 years since his graduation, truly reflecting our motto: “Enter to learn. Go forth to serve.”
Roby’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of St. Luke’s. In 1971, he and fellow alumnus Bob Salomon Jr. ‘55 made a historic decision to purchase the school for just $1, transforming it into a non-profit entity and establishing the first Board of Trustees. This pivotal moment not only shaped the future of St. Luke’s but also created a lasting impact on the educational journeys of countless students for more than 50 years.
During a visit to Roby’s home last winter, Head of School Mary Carter asked about his commitment to service and philanthropy. Roby humbly replied, “I always get more than I give. Great friendships have emerged, and great personal satisfaction has followed. You will always get much more than you give.”
His unwavering support and encouragement will be profoundly missed by all on the Hilltop.

The 2023-2024 academic year was filled with exciting community events on the Hilltop. The Parents’ Association volunteers, committee chairs, and the board went above and beyond to serve the St. Luke’s community in many wonderful and unique ways.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of our parent body, we enjoyed remarkable success with cherished events such as the PA Cookie Stroll, Book Chat, Key Speakers series, the Spread the Love Pie Giveaway, our Spring Volunteer Breakfast, and our outstanding Annual Spring Gala
Every PA committee meeting and sponsored event depends on the willingness of parents to contribute in significant ways by volunteering their time and talents These contributions demonstrate the incredible pride our parents have for our children, our school, and our community
