This mission is fueled by you, our donors. In 2015-16, you gave a record-breaking $4.7 million to support an exceptional education. You left no stone unturned. Through your gifts, you kept faculty compensation in the top quartile of our independent school cohort and accelerated faculty growth and development through professional development. You invested in robust program reviews in the Middle and Upper Schools and serious-minded examinations of curriculum, social-emotional learning and financial aid. You advanced forward-thinking academic initiatives in project-based learning, design thinking and blended learning. You have taken the endowment to $25.6 million as of June 30. Thank you for keeping St. Luke’s strong and continuously improving. It is a St. Luke’s tradition that parents of the graduating class come together to make a legacy gift in honor of their graduating seniors. Each gift is unique, though each has three things in common: a) it meets a strategic need of the school; b) it represents the senior class in a meaningful way; c) it provides an enduring reminder of their time on the Hilltop. Faculty Support

Endowment for Faculty Established in 2002 to provide support to faculty and faculty-related initiatives such as professional development. This fund includes The Dr. Kidd Excellence in Teaching Award, which is given annually to a fulltime teacher who exemplifies the ideals of SLS through excellence in the classroom, service to the total School community, and dedication to the well being and growth of St. Luke’s students. Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Fund Supports Three “Dream Grants” in 2015-2016 Steve and Liz Goldstone, former St. Luke’s parents, continue to make dreams come true on the Hilltop. Each year, teachers may apply for the grant by describing a personal project or journey that will enrich their lives. A team of peers reviews applications and this year selected three winners: Director of College Counseling Sonia Bell, Assistant Head of Middle School Mark Chuhta and Art teacher Nancy Sarno. Sonia will travel with her sister from Chicago to Los Angeles via Amtrak: “It is my idea of the ultimate adventure...I can’t put a price tag on staring out a window looking at a side of America that most will never see...and being able to unplug for long stretches when we pass through remote ports of call where 4G stands for 4 goats.” Mark and son AJ will work on his wife’s first car, a ’68 Mustang: “I wanted a hobby where AJ and I learn together instead of me doing all the teaching.” Receiving the Dream Grant allows Mark to get the proper tools and materials needed to complete this project. Nancy is excited to take on the new art of piano playing. Nancy first tickled the ivories when she was 10 years old but the chance to really play has been intermittent: “I gave up playing for a stretch of time, but I have always considered the piano a living thing that is my friend. When my husband died, I bought myself a new piano, but found too much time had gone by, and couldn’t pick up where I left off playing.” The faculty enrichment grant will allow her to take piano lessons for 18 months….and have a lifelong dream come true.

Head of School Discretionary Fund Each year, the Head of School Discretionary Fund supports one or more strategic projects that fall outside of the operating budget. In the 2015-2016 school year a new World Languages class was launched, that allows students to move at their own pace through St. Luke’s Latin curricula. Latin Omnibus is taught in a blended learning environment, which means some instruction is online and some is faceto-face with a St. Luke’s teacher. What makes this course unique is that there is no mandatory in-class element. Instead, the teacher is available during a regularly scheduled period to offer individualized assistance. Latin Omnibus covers course material for Latin I, Latin II, and Honors Latin II. This type of course, unique to St. Luke’s School, reflects the best of student-directed learning. In 2015-2016 the Head of School Discretionary Fund also enabled St. Luke’s to pilot the use of LinkedIn Recruiter, a tool to expand and enrich St. Luke’s hiring efforts. A dedicated year-round recruiting effort has been added to the annual winter hiring cycle. By recruiting year-round, St. Luke’s can enlarge and strengthen the pool of candidates beyond the traditional talent that independent job boards yield.

China Care Endowed Chair for Chinese Language Education Established in 2006 to fund a Chinese language instructor who will also be the coordinator of the St. Luke’s School China Care Club, a student organization which will help further the mission of China Care. Endowment Value as of 6/30/16:

St. Luke’s Alumnus Donates $500K to Richard M. Whitcomb Endowment Fund Though he spent just one year at St. Luke’s, the impact on Norwalk native Mark Feinberg ’81 was profound. Feinberg recently expressed his gratitude with a nearly $500,000 donation to St. Luke’s Richard M. Whitcomb Endowment Fund. “I had many wonderful mentors at St. Luke’s, but none more influential than Mr. Whitcomb,” said Feinberg of St. Luke’s former Headmaster (1980- 2002). “Mr. Whitcomb was absolutely the catalyst for this gift. I can’t thank him enough for all he did for me at St. Luke’s. He was my Headmaster, my football coach, and even helped me plan for college. We’ve been friends now for thirty years.” The Richard M. Whitcomb Endowment Fund at St. Luke’s School was established in 2002 thanks to the generosity of alumni and parents upon the retirement of Headmaster Richard Whitcomb. The Scholarship benefits students who embody the values of St. Luke’s School and who will thrive in a school setting that prepares them for a “lifelong commitment to learning and social responsibility.” Whitcomb Scholars are chosen based on proven academic and co-curricular potential, strength of character and demonstrated financial need to attend St. Luke’s School. Since its inception, there have been eight recipients of the Whitcomb Scholarship, including three currently attending the School.

Parents’ Association The St. Luke’s Parents’ Association consists of all parents and guardians of students enrolled in St. Luke’s School. Its goal is to engage and involve the entire school community through educational, informational, social and fundraising projects. In 2015-2016 donations to the P.A. helped to provide fundraising for professional development, non-tuition essentials for students on financial aid, and to launch a new initiative focused on social emotional learning. On behalf of St. Luke’s, the Parents’ Association thanks all those donors and volunteers whose time and generosity enables us to “Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.”
