Message from the Head of School In 2019-2020, the world as we knew it changed. St. Luke’s mission did not. Driven by this mission, our community went Above & Beyond in so many new ways, always focused on our North Star – connecting with students. I reflect back on the 2019-2020 school year with pride and immense gratitude; proud of how strong we were and what we accomplished, and grateful for the St. Luke’s community which responded to a call to action like never before. My team and I were blessed with input, counsel and tireless assistance from so many. I could never adequately thank you. And I feel fortunate about the strength of our financial position. With a new model came added costs and despite this community having to face its own cares and concerns in the midst of a global pandemic, you gave generously to our Annual Fund, the Momentum Campaign, Senior Gift and the COVID Relief Fund. We exited the school year financially sound, well-positioned to face the daunting challenges of how to prepare for this new academic year.
Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.

• In our first 92 years of being St. Luke’s, we have faced and survived crises before. And we will again. For this one, some things I especially appreciate include: Sadness and pain of separation led to a resolve to find creative ways to still deliver the spirit of St. Luke’s. We couldn’t replace prom, spring sports or graduation–but parents, students, faculty and staff, and our alumni all leaned in to help. We won’t soon forget the smiles on the faces of Class of 2020 seniors and their families as they drove onto the Hilltop for the first time in three months, jumped out of their cars wearing caps and gowns, received their diplomas and took pictures (see page 53). This was not how any of us had envisioned it, but what a special moment. Our Technology Team (see page 41). Challenged as never before to equip us to deliver an outstanding educational experience, but from a distance, they rose to the occasion.
In support of that same goal, our Board of Trustees approved increased expenditures for the technology necessary for exceptional instruction. They dedicated resources to provide additional financial aid and authorized expenditures necessary to meet a dramatically different educational environment. The parent, trustee and alumni communities recognized our increased financial requirements and got fully behind us. In the midst of global chaos, our Annual Fund reached its goal despite stopping all fundraising activities for nearly three months at the onset of the lockdown; our Class of 2020 parents generously contributed to Senior Gift, resulting in our beautiful new Cardio and Fitness Mezzanine; our endowment grew as global markets rallied and closed the year at a new record; and our final phase of the Momentum Campaign came to a close after raising $30 million for facilities, program and endowment (see campaign section beginning on page 58). These examples only scratch the surface. Please see some additional stories of SLSHeroes on pages 46-47 and about St. Luke's at Home on pages 50-53. In closing, I celebrate you all for being St. Luke’s. Rather than feeling weakened by this pandemic, I see us emerging stronger. The future for this great school is bright and I am proud and humbled to be your Head of School. With sincere gratitude,
Mark Davis

Alumni Giving St. Luke’s alumni serve as ambassadors for the School and mentors for our students. They are the keepers of our history, protectors of our traditions, and the shoulders on which we stand. St. Luke’s alumni support the School through various volunteer efforts and their personal financial contributions. While the majority of alumni direct their gifts to the Annual Fund, the Richard Whitcomb Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Dr. Kidd Endowment for Faculty are also widely supported. 1940s

Mike Runyon ’62
Donor Highlight: 40 Years of Giving “Appreciate and enjoy your time at SLS because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and one that will shape who you are for the rest of your life.” – Mike Runyon ’62 Interview conducted and written by Justin Pearl ‘21, member of the Student Alumni Committee Mike Runyon ‘62 made his first donation to St. Luke’s in 1980 ... and hasn’t missed a year since. While a student at St. Luke’s, Mike was a member of Student Government, the baseball team, and the football team all four years, and also played basketball for two years. When asked why he gives back to St. Luke’s, Mike explained, “I appreciate what St. Luke’s meant to me, so that says ‘give back.’ It’s a habit and discipline, like brushing your teeth. I’m fairly philanthropic so I give to my college, SLS community, and public TV and radio. It’s not about how much you give but the discipline – the habit of giving. Years ago I gave $100 or $200 a year; then when I could give more, I went and gave more.” Mike has remained close to his St. Luke’s peers, in
particular Fred Glass ’62 and Doug Wright ’63, who were the center and the quarterback of the football team when Mike was the right tackle. “It means a lot [to be connected to St. Luke’s almost 60 years after graduation]. I didn’t keep in touch in college, and then I reconnected at the 10th Reunion. It means a lot to stay connected with friends.” Mike lives in Chocowinity, NC. His beloved wife, Christine, passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2021, after a two-year battle with cancer. They were married for 47 years. THANK YOU, MIKE RUNYON '62, from all of us at St. Luke’s. Your dedication and generosity to your alma mater is exemplary.
Alumni Leadership Society St. Luke’s gratefully acknowledges the members of the Alumni Leadership Society who contributed $1,000 or more; made their first gift; increased their gift; or volunteered for St. Luke’s during the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Leaving a bequest to St. Luke’s is one way of making a larger gift than you thought was possible. It involves no immediate loss of capital or income, and tax benefits minimize the ultimate cost to ones' heirs. If interested in learning more about making a planned gift to St. Luke’s, please call the Development Office at (203) 801-4957 or speak with your estate planning professional. Vice President, Community Life Amy DiTeodoro
Vice President, Social Activities Penelope Jones
Due to the tireless efforts of our parent body, many of our beloved gatherings, like the PA Cookie Stroll, the STORM Chasers Super Saturday, the Thanksgiving Pie Giveaway, the MOSAIC documentary screening, our excellent Book Chat and Spring Volunteer Breakfast, as well as our introduction to virtual Brown Bag Lunches were a huge success. Every PA committee meeting and sponsored event depends upon the willingness of parents to contribute in some significant way – volunteering their time and talents. These contributions demonstrate the incredible amount of pride that our parents have for our children, our School, and our community. Thank you to the many volunteers, donors, and event attendees who made the 2019-20 Parents’ Association activities possible. We are so grateful to each of you and to this special community for coming together in support of the PA and St. Luke’s School. Our parent community is the strength on which the PA stands. I feel very honored and grateful to have worked with many of you during my tenure on the PA Executive Board. Thank you to the many parents who give so kindly of their time, talents, treasure, and energy. With sincere appreciation,

Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Fund Supports Two “Dream Grants” in 2019-20 Dreams came true this past summer for two St. Luke’s faculty members, Matt Bavone, Academic Technology Coordinator and Latin Teacher and Michael Mitchell, designLab Director.
St. Luke’s Technology Team recognized with Crusader of the Year Award
Matt originally planned to tour 7th-11th Century historical sites in England, Wales, and Scotland, but due to COVID-19, adjusted his grant to apply to more at-home friendly activities. Matt reimagined his back yard to create beautiful garden space and plans to build a new desktop computer from the ground up.
The Crusader of the Year award is presented to the full-time faculty or staff member whose contribution to SLS far exceeds that which is expected of them, thereby enriching the life and effectiveness of the School.
Michael, a father of two, is returning to his own childhood passion for drumming, so he can reconnect with his former identity as a drummer and share a love of music with his children. This grant will go to purchase an electronic drum set that is nearly silent, allowing Michael to practice during his children’s nap times or late at night during the little free time he has. Plus he will be able to cover one year of drumming lessons to rekindle his skills.

Faculty and staff gather each year in early June for an awards ceremony to honor each other and recognize the milestones, achievements, and contributions of their colleagues. St. Luke’s has many long-standing traditions and customs but at the 2020 ceremony St. Luke’s broke with tradition when awarding the Crusader of the Year Award. Faculty & staff requested that the award go not to a single person, as is our custom, but instead to an utterly incredible team of people, the St. Luke’s Technology Team.
Mark Davis used the following words to present the 2019-2020 Crusader of the Year Award: “Without their infinite patience, unparalleled knowledge and skill, their willingness to go above and beyond, and their grace, subtlety, and good humor, St. Luke's would never have been able to thrive and excel the way that we have as an independent school during this pandemic, everyone here knows to be undeniably true.” Mr. Davis enthusiastically presented the award to the St. Luke’s Technology Team of Matt Bavone, PJ Clarke, Roger D’Agostin, Bryan DeVissiere, Eli Fendelman, Sasha Mathrani, and their exceptional leader, Eleanor Page. Awardees each received a $1,000 stipend and their names added to the Crusader plaque, which hangs prominently just outside of the main lobby.

Student Spotlights
Academic Distinction on the Hilltop St. Luke's inspires students to go "Above and Beyond" what they ever thought possible. Driven by a combination of analytical power, insatiable curiosity and the highest personal standards for achievement, Valedictorian Chris Walsh ‘20 and Salutatorian Amelie Warneryd ‘20 exemplify SLS engagement in meaningful learning. Valedictorian Chris Walsh ‘20
Salutatorian Amelie Warneryd ‘20
His teachers describe Chris as a student who possesses an authentic love of learning and pushes himself to succeed, setting his own bar high and always striving to exceed every expectation.
Amelie is described by her teachers as a student who encompasses extraordinary gifts of comprehension, invention and enthusiasm.
Three seniors and four alumni were featured as “Top Teens to Watch” by Moffly Media.
“Whether in the classroom or leading the Women in STEM Education club, she approaches her work with competence and inclusivity.” – Janet Jochem Science Department Chair
These seven students have gone Above and Beyond in academics, athletics, the arts and service. As Fairfield Magazine wrote, “Space does not allow for all of the accomplishments they have achieved ... but we suspect this is not the last you hear about them.”
"When he was told that he should try to speak some Latin during a discussion, he stretched his ability, opting to speak only in Latin that class. With every new challenge, Chris not only finds a way to accomplish the goals set by the class, but also to push himself beyond them.” – Latin Teacher Leo Mahler Chris, who now attends Brown University, states that his senior thesis on, “Historicity in Latin Literature, comparing two opposing accounts of the Roman Civil War,” actually began while taking a Latin class about truth and history as a sophomore. It was during his junior year, while taking a Greco Roman history class, that he came up with the topic of his thesis.

St. Luke's Students are “Top Teens to Watch” in 2020
Amelie, who now attends the University of Pennsylvania, began her research for her STEM Scholar presentation, "Examining Cerebral Protein Expression and Regions of Impact After Blast Induced Traumatic Brain Injury," during her internship in the Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) at the Department of Navy laboratory. She plans to pursue a neuroscience major at UPENN and hopes to continue this research in the future. She also hopes her research can be applicable in military medicine and potentially help people suffering from blast-induced brain injuries.

St. Luke's at Home
Middle School – History In the Making Recognizing that we are living in the midst of a historical moment, Middle School history teacher Sarah Westerberg-Egan asked seventh and eighth graders to capture images of their lives during the Covid-19 pandemic to share their unique perspective during this historic time.
Above & Beyond What We Ever Thought Possible
“I told my students that future SLS classes may be referencing the images they are submitting for this assignment. They have approached this project through the thoughtful eye of a historian.”
In March of 2020, the St. Luke's community pivoted to a robust remote learning environment, known as St. Luke’s at Home, complete with meaningful service, athletic, artistic and club experiences. One year later, we reflect with immense gratitude on the creativity, patience and adaptability of our community.
– Middle School History Teacher Sarah Westerberg-Egan
St. Luke's Scholars Symposium – A Silver Lining Director of Studies Jim Yavenditti refers to the annual Symposium as “the highest form of independent scholarship here on the St. Luke’s Hilltop.” The Scholars Program at St. Luke’s School is for students eager to forge their own paths. After identifying a field or topic that fascinates and inspires them, Scholars begin a year-long deep dive that includes extensive independent research, consultations with faculty mentors and ultimately – a formal presentation of findings. During St. Luke’s at Home, the 16 Scholars presented their research virtually. According to Yavenditti, the virtual presentations provided an unexpected silver lining: “Normally, our Scholars present their findings in a classroom with a dozen people or so watching. This year, thanks to the wizardry of Academic Technology Coordinator Matt Bavone, 50+ people watched each presentation live and asked questions. It was incredible for our Scholars to get that kind of support and engagement from our community. “These presentations are an example of what happens when committed students engage their passions in a year of research, guided by incredible teachers. Several times, I forgot I was listening to high school students – it’s more akin to watching a PhD candidate present a doctoral dissertation. The level of knowledge and the sophistication of the presenters ... truly astounding.” – Head of School Mark Davis

SLS Jazz band – An Innovative Talent Showcase During St. Luke’s at Home, Upper School Band Teacher Peter Valera knew that instrumental music classes would require a new approach. Valera shared, “I wanted the band to have a performance, but Zoom wasn’t the right platform for a live concert.
Middle School – Art Challenges Color Creativity
SLS Asian Affinity Group – A Virtual Embrace of Heritage
As a result, Valera engineered a new style of student performance using video. This required each musician to perform and record their part individually. Valera then edited the clips and audio into a final video. Many hours later, the St. Luke’s Jazz Band’s rendition of the Rocky theme song “Gonna Fly Now” was complete.
Teaching art online during Covid-19 called for creative innovation and MS Art Teacher Haley Wulfman met the challenge ... brilliantly. Art Challenges are prompts and lessons that introduce artists, artworks, ways of thinking, new approaches to materials, cultural institutions, and more. The concept was a wonderful way for students to enjoy a rich visual arts learning experiences from home.
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May is a wonderful time to highlight diverse cultures and rich history. St. Luke’s Asian Affinity Group celebrated with activities such as virtual movie nights, spotify playlists, and weekly recipe videos, all of which spotlighted Asian and Pacific Americans traditions in our community and beyond.
"Our student musicians have worked so hard all year, and I was looking for a way to showcase their efforts and talents with our community.” – Upper School Band Teacher Peter Valera
Senior Scholars presented in one of three categories: Global, Classical and STEM
Beyond discovering new expressive potential with traditional pens and pencils, students have now realized the potential of materials that surround them at home every day. Exploring unlimited imagination, lines have been drawn in chocolate syrup, patterns made of noodles, and shadows have been transformed to musical staffs. "St. Luke's students remind us that, no matter the circumstance, true creators create – we are surrounded by potential, if we train our minds to search for it." – MS Art Teacher Haley Wulfman
This year’s topics included: The Effects of Microfinance on Communities in Developing Nations (Global), Historicity in Latin Literature: Comparing Two Accounts of the Roman Civil War (Classical) and Data-Driven Discovery of Effective Marketing Hashtags (STEM).

Class of 2020 Hilltop Celebration
St. Luke's found a creative way to celebrate the Class of 2020 and the culmination of their time on the Hilltop. While it was impossible to host a traditional graduation, Head of School Mark Davis invited graduates, in carefully timed increments, to come to campus with their families for photos in their caps and gowns.
Celebrating St. Luke's Seniors Missing the spring semester of one’s senior year is a huge disappointment. Without spring athletics, prom, and even a traditional graduation, our amazing seniors persevered. Herculean efforts were made by faculty, staff, and parents to find ways to lift their spirits with loving gifts and heartfelt gestures. These included hand-delivered cupcakes and SLS blankets, surprise personalized signs being placed on athletes’ and debaters’ lawns in the wee hours of the morning, flower bouquets for senior thespians and Cum Laude awardees, and St. Luke’s gift boxes brimming with SLS swag for every senior. A Senior Awards and Tribute video – a deserving and moving tribute to our incredible 12th graders – featured highlights of the Class of 2020 throughout their years on the Hilltop along with tribute messages written to each senior from a faculty member.
SLS Storm – The Home Game in Full Swing St. Luke’s Athletic Department highlighted a number of ways for our student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and members of the St. Luke’s community to stay connected and in shape during our time in quarantine. In order to continue developing players’ skills and building team camaraderie, spring coaches met with their teams via Zoom and shared instructional videos with players. St Luke's at Home required some athletic ingenuity. Our boys and girls lacrosse teams collaborated to produce their own fun videos that highlight their stick skills. One family combined baseball and lacrosse so both brothers could work on their respective skills.
We wanted to celebrate together on the day seniors officially graduated. We needed to see their faces and share our joy." – Head of School Mark Davis
“It was so much fun to find a new and creative way to honor the commitment and character of our spring senior athletes.” – Athletic Director Mike West
“Seeing each family, one at a time, was really special. So many people cried! It was easy to see how much it meant to families.” – Head of Upper School Liz Perry
2019-2020 Athletic Awards During the 2019-2020 school year, 306 students participated on varsity, JV, and thirds teams, and 35 Middle School students played on Upper School teams. In May, when it came time to honor and celebrate their seasons, over 200 St. Luke’s families attended the online Upper School Athletic Awards presentation. Videos and slide shows spotlighted 19 sports across all three seasons, recognized our 48 team captains for their leadership, and acknowledged the student-athletes who received post-season honors for their athletic performances. Forty-five three-sport athletes or team managers were recognized for their contributions across all three seasons, and 55% of the student population represented the Storm across two seasons. Lars Ernbeg ‘20 and Phoebe Kurth ‘20 received the Athlete of Distinction Award for their tremendous dedication as multi-sport athletes, across all seasons, during their upper-school years.
“It was a beautiful setting and a wonderful way to mark the end of high school for our daughter. They did so much to make sure these seniors felt the end of this year was something special. St. Luke's went above and beyond!” – Parent, Jill Stute
"It's been said over and over again ... but in a very real sense we are indeed all in this together.” – Head of School, Mark Davis

Momentum Campaign
Momentum Campaign The Momentum Campaign is the manifestation of a visionary strategic plan launched by St. Luke's Board of Trustees. Since the launch of the campaign in 2007, donors have contributed over $70 million dollars to the initiatives outlined in the following pages. Divided into four distinct phases, the Momentum Campaign has fueled immense growth in our endowment, physical plant, and our ability to attract and retain exceptional educators. More than 3,000 parents, alumni, trustees, faculty, staff and grandparents have contributed to the Momentum Campaign over the past 13 years. Each gift to Momentum was an investment in St. Luke's School and collectively, they advanced St. Luke's in transformative and lasting ways.
Momentum Campaign
"Our donors have proven over and over again that everything is possible at St. Luke’s. We seek nothing less than the future success of generations of students, and of our School. Thank you for helping shape the future of St. Luke’s School." – James Andersen
Message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees Extraordinary outcomes call for celebration. Now that the four-phased Momentum Campaign has come to a successful close, this is indeed a time to celebrate. During our final phase, we talked about our goal of attracting, retaining and inspiring exceptional teachers … to ensure the best student outcomes. As we invited you to play a lead role in charting our course, we said: “Our donors have proven over and over again that everything is possible at St. Luke’s. We seek nothing less than the future success of generations of students, and of our school.” Thank you for helping shape the future of St. Luke’s School.
Let’s look back at how we got here. We did it with a plan and a community of passionate believers. In 2007, the St. Luke’s Board of Trustees unveiled a plan to launch what became the biggest and most ambitious campaign in the history of the school. Thus was born our Momentum Campaign.
Looking back, it’s almost hard to comprehend how audacious the plan was. Over the past 13 years, we learned that it was not just our trustees who were passionate believers. Instead, our entire community believed in St. Luke’s and wanted to see an even better future for this great school.
From the launch of Phase I in 2007 to the close of Phase IV, the final phase, this past June 2020, our community’s engagement in the Momentum Campaign has enabled St. Luke’s to do the following: • • • •
Expand and renovate our facilities, thereby completing the campus footprint envisioned by our Board of Trustees Grow our endowment by more than $18 million Ensure our ability to recruit, hire and retain the best faculty by moving our compensation program solidly into the top quartile of peer schools Secure essential operating funds for each of the past 13 years.
Audacious? Perhaps. Successful? No question. In total, the Momentum Campaign raised more than $70 million for St. Luke’s School. Wow! • • • •
Today, our community enjoys: A beautiful campus with classrooms purposefully designed to support learning goals Outstanding and recently renovated athletic facilities, including two new turf fields A robust financial aid budget An exceptional faculty, stronger and better supported than ever in the history of our great school.
All thanks to the scores of you that invested in the St. Luke’s Difference. As Chair of the Board of Trustees and Co-Chair of the Final Phase of this Campaign, it has been an incredibly satisfying experience. I was honored to meet with so many alumni and families and to hear your hopes and dreams for St. Luke’s. I was humbled by your generosity and your decision to partner with us for the good of the school. And the scores of volunteers who gave their time, talent and treasure to make this all happen never ceased to amaze me.
Please read on to learn more about each phase and what we accomplished together. On behalf of the Momentum Campaign Committee, the Board of Trustees and the faculty and administration of SLS, thank you. This school and this community are better because of you.
Sincerely,
James Andersen

Momentum Campaign
Momentum Campaign: Phase I 2007-2010 In 2007 St. Luke’s mounted an ambitious campaign to secure St. Luke’s financial future. Originally envisioned as a large-scale, multi-year campaign focused on endowment and facilities growth, St. Luke’s re-imagined the campaign following the financial crisis in 2008. This new campaign was made of five, 3-year phases, each consisting of endowment and construction priorities. The purpose of breaking down the campaign into smaller pieces was to enable us to deliver program and facilities enhancements to students as soon as possible. Despite the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, Phase I secured $12 million for St. Luke’s School. A total of $8.8 million was committed for endowment, $7.1 million of which was used to establish the Unrestricted Board Endowment Fund, which as of June 30, 2020, was valued at $11.8 million.
In 2007, St. Luke’s School was fully enrolled and financially secure, but we lagged behind our peers with respect to the size of our endowment. Significant growth of the endowment through the Momentum Campaign became a priority for St. Luke’s Board of Trustees.

Why Endowment?
Raised for Endowment:
Total Raised:

$12 M
For the institution, endowment provides a dependable stream of ongoing income. This income, a portion of the earned interest on the invested corpus, provides independence for a school, reducing the pressure on the only other major sources of revenue for an independent school – tuition and annual giving. The stronger the endowment is, the greater our ability to mitigate tuition increases. A robust endowment also signals to families, alumni, and peer institutions, that the School is stable, well supported, and here to stay.
With strength, comes prestige. With prestige comes increased investment. Increased investment builds brand, which raises money, which strengthens brand, which further elevates the value of a past, present and future St. Luke’s diploma. For the donor, establishing an endowment at St. Luke’s provides an opportunity to advance one’s own values and priorities while also advancing those of the School they love. It also offers donors the chance to leave a meaningful and permanent legacy. Often families work together with their children to create an endowed fund that their family can continue to add to, and remained actively involved with, for generations to come. An investment in St. Luke’s endowment is an investment in the future of this great School, and it is fuel for all that our students will accomplish on the Hilltop and beyond. For more information on St. Luke's existing endowments, please see pages 31-35. To inquire about establishing a new endowed fund, please contact development@stlukesct.org.

Momentum Campaign: Phase II 2010-2011 Phase II of the Momentum Campaign tackled a major priority outlined in St. Luke’s 2008 Master Facilities Plan: increasing student common space. Enclosing the courtyard allowed for construction of the Forese Family Fireplace Commons and the Dining Commons. Renovated science classrooms and the launch of our STEM Diploma program significantly strengthened our science offerings; and the construction of the Center for Leadership and the Christine Noyer Seaver Global Classroom enabled St. Luke’s to evolve its leadership curriculum into a flagship program for student leadership training, innovation, design-thinking and global citizenship. Plans for Phase II were approved in the summer of 2010 and the new facilities opened to students the following fall. Phases I and II doubled the size of St. Luke’s endowment, putting SLS on the map, and securing our position amongst peer institutions.
Phase II Highlights: • 2010 – Science classrooms renovated • 2010 – George E. Momentum Campaign
Momentum Campaign: Phase IV 2015-2020 In 2015, St. Luke’s had successfully completed three of the five planned phases of the Momentum Campaign. Ahead of us were two more Momentum phases: The Humanities Wing (which included the designLab) and the Arts and Library Wing. In the Spring of 2015, the Board of Trustees voted to combine the last two phases of the Momentum Campaign into one final five-year phase. We broke ground on the Jensen Family Humanities Wing and the Arts and Library Wings in the spring of 2017 and the 35,000 sq. ft. addition opened to students in the fall of 2018. While new construction often steals the spotlight, St. Luke’s endowment grew by nearly $7 million during these five years, including four new endowed funds and $2.5 million in contributions to the Richard Whitcomb Scholarship Fund.
Phase IV Highlights: • 2015 – First Rotating Endowed Chair established at St. Luke’s • 2016 – Richard Whitcomb Scholarship & Tribute Dinner • 2017 – Groundbreaking for new Arts, Humanities and Library Building • 2018 – Class of 2018 Field completed • 2018 – Library, Café, Design Lab, Visual Arts & Jensen Family Humanities Wings open • 2019 – The Orlich Family "360" Endowed Fund established • 2020 – Theater Arts Endowed Chair established • 2020 – Civil Discourse Endowed Fund established

Richard M. Whitcomb Scholarship & Tribute Dinner More than 350 members of St. Luke's extended community gathered together on October 2, 2016 to honor and celebrate Headmaster Emeritus Dick Whitcomb and his innumerable contributions to St. Luke's School. Over $1.3 million was raised for the Richard M. Whitcomb Scholarship Endowed Fund. Four of the nine (now twelve) Whitcomb Scholars were in attendance that evening. St. Luke’s alumni, current and past parents, trustees, faculty, staff and friends spent the evening at The Waters Edge at Giovanni’s in Darien (owned by Sal and JoAnn Latorraca P ‘14), laughing, dancing and celebrating Mr. Whitcomb’s humor, generosity and huge heart. Head of School Mark Davis kicked off the night by welcoming guests and sharing his personal tribute to Dick, reflecting that "you can learn a lot about a man when you attempt to fill his shoes." Davis was followed by Doug Stewart '07, the first recipient of the Whitcomb Scholarship, who reflected that, "sometimes all a young person needs to succeed is to be given the right opportunity and a support system. I am truly thankful that the Whitcomb Scholarship provided both of these things to me." Dick’s children, Jon '83 and Andrea Whitcomb ’83, spoke about Dick as a father and a Headmaster. "He knew when to wink,"
Jon recounted, referring to his father’s ability to see the big picture and keep a sense of humor throughout his 22-year tenure as Headmaster. Andy and Jon both acknowledged their mother, Barbara Whitcomb, as a source of strength for their father and their family. Honoree Dick Whitcomb spoke about how his own humble beginnings inspired his work to make life better for others. LaTanya Langley '93 closed the speaking portion of the evening with a glowing tribute of Dick and the transformational power of having someone truly believe in you. The Richard M. Whitcomb Scholarship enables students with proven academic and co-curricular potential, strength of character and demonstrated financial need to attend St. Luke's School. Whitcomb Scholarship recipients are selected based on their ability to make a major contribution to the School and who personify former Headmaster Dick Whitcomb's passion for academic curiosity, strength of character and co-curricular involvement.

St. Luke’s gladly accepts gifts from Donor Advised Funds. In fact, if your DAF is with Fidelity, Schwab or Mellon, you can initiate your gift directly from St. Luke’s online giving page at www.stlukesct.org/give.
A pledge demonstrates your intention to make a gift. This gift may then be fulfilled in multiple installments or in full at a later date. Pledging an amount and paying it over time may enable you to increase the size of your donation.
Matching Gifts
Over 500 companies across the country will match their employees’ gifts to secondary education. Many companies will match gifts at a 1:1 ratio or greater. It’s a simple way to increase, if not double, the impact of your gift to St. Luke’s School. Visit www.stlukesct.org/slsmatchinggifts to see if your company participates.
Planned Giving
Making a bequest to St. Luke’s is one way of making a larger gift than you thought was possible. It involves no immediate loss of capital or income, and tax benefits minimize the ultimate cost to one’s heirs. If interested in learning more about making a planned gift to St. Luke’s, please call the Development Office at (203) 801-4957 or speak with your estate planning professional. You may also visit our planned giving webpage at www.stlukesct.plannedgiving.org.
