Dear Families and Friends of St. Luke’s, In the two years since this guiding document was created by our community, we have witnessed the power of clarity and focus. New facilities such as the Center for Leadership and Dining/Fireplace Commons, record-breaking admission applications, and successful online learning experiences represent just a few examples of the Vision in action. We have been able to realize many aspirations, thanks to your philanthropic investment in the School.You have enabled a robust educational experience for our 525 students by supporting excellent facilities, a well-funded operating budget, and increased endowment holdings that not only fund programs today but create a foundation for long-term financial sustainability. In 2011-2012, donors gave $5.8 million to the school, over $5 million of that in cash.The Annual Fund broke another record, achieving $1,576,714. New endowment funds such as the George E. Stevens Horizons Prize, the Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Fund, and the Class of 2012 Center for Leadership Speaker Series Fund support deserving students, recognize our faculty, enhance our public speaking curriculum and enrich our community. Over the last five years, St. Luke’s endowment per student has grown steadily from near the bottom to #8 in our cohort of Fairchester League schools. Your gifts have made a transformative impact on what the School can do for its students. The Center for Leadership (CFL) is a shining example. Launched successfully in 20112012, the CFL helps each student develop his or her unique ability to lead and make a difference. The Center mounted its three-prong approach – a global perspective, service orientation, and TLC (teamwork, leadership, and communication) skills – by offering relevant and dynamic programming for Grades 5-12. Our global initiatives grew with two new faculty exchanges to schools in Argentina and Botswana and a partnership with Rangitoto College in New Zealand and the Simply Smiles Organization to complete a joint service trip in Oaxaca, Mexico.The Center also developed a public speaking curriculum that benefitted students and faculty alike, created the Lunch & Lead speaker series, invited speakers such as Peter Buffet to campus, helped faculty connect with each other and to resources off campus, and created innovative opportunities such as UnSchool Day and a community-wide Rube Goldberg contest to fuel creativity and collaboration. Advances extend beyond the CFL to signature programs that foster innovative thinking and cross-disciplinary collaboration: the STEM diploma launched this past year and two students graduated with this distinction.They were part of a group of 15 students who graduated with Global, Classical or STEM diplomas. St. Luke’s continues to move forward in technology – a key plank of the StrategicVision. The School successfully piloted a variety of online, blended, and “flipped classroom” learning and provides teachers with the professional development and resources they need to integrate technology successfully and effectively into their classrooms. These are but a few examples of what St. Luke’s has been able to do with your support. Even as the School transforms itself to provide the best possible education for our children, one thing keeps us firmly grounded and on course: this very special community. Dr. Joseph R. Kidd Excellence In Teaching Award Established

Endowment for Faculty $803,892 Established in 2002 to provide support to faculty and faculty-related initiatives such as professional development. Includes the Dr. Joseph R. Kidd Excellence in Teaching Award.

The Dr. Kidd Excellence In Teaching Award is presented annually to a member of the faculty as selected by his or her peers. The recipient is the teacher who best exempliﬁes the ideals of St. Luke’s through excellence in the classroom, service to the total community, and dedication to the well-being and growth of St. Luke’s students.

Unrestricted Board Endowment Fund $6,246,374 Established in 2007 to provide unrestricted support to the School’s operating budget while allowing for flexibility in the future.

Richard M. Whitcomb Endowed Scholarship Fund $2,769,328 Established in 2003 to provide need-based scholarships for deserving students. Named in honor of headmaster emeritus Dick Whitcomb who retired in 2002. Richard J. Pedrick Endowed Memorial Fund $217,373 Established in 1995 in memory of Dick Pedrick, parent of four SLS students and dedicated board chair from 1989 until his death in 1995, “to perpetuate, as a living memory, all that Dick Pedrick stood for.” The Richard J. Pedrick award is awarded annually to a graduating senior who exemplifies leadership, dedication, intelligence, athletic participation, good sportsmanship, and love for his/her fellow human beings. E.E. Ford Foundation Fund for Minority Scholarships $168,025 Established in 1997 to provide need-based scholarships for minority students, grades 9-12. Head of School Discretionary Endowment Fund $1,039,248 Established in 2005 to fund projects determined by the Head of School. China Care Endowed Chair for Chinese Language Education $841,130 Established in 2006 to fund a Chinese language instructor who will also be the coordinator of the St. Luke’s School China Care Club, a student organization which will help further the mission of China Care. George E. Stevens Horizons Prize Endowment $1,473,115 Established in 2010 to provide full scholarship support for a Horizons student each for up to four years of high school.The intent of the prize is to inspire Horizons students to aspire to excellence and at St. Luke’s School. It will recognize students who love learning, demonstrate good character, pursue excellence and embrace community. Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Endowed Fund $50,411 Established in 2011 to provide grants to teachers and administrators to pursue personally rewarding experiences, be it travel, summer study, or the opportunity to pursue a passion.The intent of the Fund is to recognize and reward faculty members and administrators for excellence in service to the school and its students, as well as to emphasize in a visible and enduring manner the importance of the faculty to the health and vitality of the school. Class of 2012 Center for Leadership Speakers Series $249,056 Established in 2012 as a legacy gift from the Class of 2012 to help underwrtie the Center for Leadership’s speaker series program and support the Center for Leadership’s mission to develop every SLS student’s unique ability to lead and make a difference.

The award, and corresponding fundraising effort, was envisioned and orchestrated by the Class of 1961 during its 50th Reunion gathering this past October. Class Representative Arty Selkowitz ’61 championed the effort and subsequent outreach to fellow St. Luke’s alumni. The class spent the Saturday evening of its Reunion around a dinner table last fall reminiscing as each alumnus realized how significant his time at St. Luke’s was in shaping his life. Many of the memories shared centered on the teachers they each still held in such high regard 50 years later – especially Dr. Joseph R. Kidd, St. Luke’s School Headmaster from 1938 to 1964. It was under these auspices, and a desire to contribute to the professional growth of the current St. Luke’s faculty, that the class led the effort to establish the award in honor of Dr. Kidd. St. Luke’s is proud to announce Seventh Grade English teacher, Mr. Frank Henson ’74, as its first Dr. Kidd Excellence In Teaching Award winner. Frank brings a fire and passion for teaching to the Hilltop each and every day, a core philosophy of empathy and encouragement, and the strong desire to work collaboratively with his colleagues on the Seventh Grade teaching team.

Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Endowed Fund Awards Dream Grants to Faculty Thanks to the new Faculty Enrichment Fund, established by the Goldstone Family in 2011, teachers will be able to pursue personally rewarding experiences, be it travel, summer study, or the opportunity to pursue a passion. The intent of the Fund is to recognize and reward faculty members and administrators for excellence in service to the school and its students, as well as to emphasize in a visible and enduring manner the importance of the faculty to the health and vitality of the school. The first award recipients were teachers Camille DeMarco-Havens, David Havens, and Jeff Kress. Entering their fourth decade as teachers at St. Luke’s, Camille DeMarco-Havens and David Havens were awarded a Faculty Dream Grant to take a 25th wedding anniversary trip of a lifetime. They plan to travel with their children to Costa Rica, where the family’s deep interest in ecology and sustainability will guide their journey into the country’s unique ecosystem. Costa Rica’s model approach to resource conservation and ecotourism will no doubt be woven into Dave’s rich sixth grade science curriculum. Also a veteran teacher and cornerstone of the St. Luke’s community, Jeff Kress is thrilled the Faculty Dream Grant has allowed him to fulfill a life-long dream of creating a Ham Radio station in his home. During his years at St. Luke’s, Mr. Kress’s passion for radio has nurtured the broadcast talents of SLS students through his role as a faculty advisor to St. Luke’s radio station, WSLX. After spending the summer studying for his Technician’s license exam and researching and acquiring the equipment necessary to broadcast from his own home, Jeff has been issued his call sign and is on the air.

Head of School Discretionary Endowment Fund Continuing with the themes of Continuous Improvement and Innovation & Collaboration in the School’s Strategic Vision, income from the Fund in 2011-2012 was used to help purchase 100 new iPads for the 8th grade iPad program, which will enable teachers and students to access dynamic mobile technology for curricular use in and out of their classrooms. This is a most unique opportunity for the 8th grade program to further enhance their curriculum and use of advanced technology.

Parents’ Association

The St. Luke’s Parents’ Association consists of all parents and guardians of students enrolled at St. Luke’s School. Its goal is to engage and involve the entire school community through educational, informational, social and fundraising projects. In 2011-2012, donations to the P.A. helped provide funding for professional development for faculty, non-tuition essentials for students on ﬁnancial aid, and investments in capital projects like the Center for Leadership. On behalf of St. Luke’s, the Parents’ Association thanks all those volunteers whose time and dedication enables us to “Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.”
