SATURDAY, JUNE 15 10:20 a.m. Closing Worship We are privileged to welcome The Rev. Robert McMichael and Jarvis Wilson as our worship leaders for this week. Their music and callings will be a blessing to us through our event and we thank you Robert and Jarvis for sharing your gifts with us. The Rev. Robert McMichael Associate Minister/Worship Leader - Mt. Bethel UMC Marietta, Georgia Robert Henry McMichael, III, is a 5th generation Atlantan. A product of the Atlanta Public Schools, Robert is a 1999 graduate of Morehouse College, and a 2009 graduate of Gammon Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta. Robert has distinguished himself as a writer, lecturer, vocalist and organist. He has served in numerous capacities in churches throughout the Atlanta area. As Organist, he has served at Mallelieu United Methodist Church, East Point, GA, (now East Point First Mallelieu UMC) and at Hoosier Memorial United Methodist Church, his home church. He has served Cascade United Methodist Church as Director of the Women’s Chorus and Praise and Worship Leader. He also served at Historic Central Ministries United Methodist Church as Minister of Music, Worship and the Arts. He currently serves the Mt. Bethel/St. Phillip United Methodist Church in Marietta as Worship Leader. As a baritone soloist, Robert has been featured at many recitals and concerts. One of his proudest moments was when he was chosen to be a part of the Chorus that performed Brahms’s Nanie at the Woodruff Arts Center under the direction of the late Robert Shaw. In July of 2001 he co-chaired a delegation that traveled to the Ivory Coast of West Africa to take the Gospel message in song and to begin discussions on how the then “Methodist Church of Cote’Ivoire” and the United Methodist Church could merge. Within two years of the initial conference, the Methodist Church of Cote’Ivoire became a part of the United Methodist Church. Robert is also a Realtor® with Coldwell Banker – Cascade Realty. Robert believes that it is his calling to “Spread the Liberating Gospel of Jesus Christ through word and song.” It is this calling that has sparked Robert to begin writing his first publication, “With My Whole Heart: Worship as a Lifestyle.” Robert believes that worship should be more than a once a week event, however, it should be the lifeline upon which Christians thrive. Robert is married to the former Dina Bagby and they have three children. Robert has adopted as his life’s theme, “Love, The More Excellent Way!”

Jarvis R. Wilson Minister of Music at Israel Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta — Rev. William Smith Pastor; Director of the Madison Association Youth Choir, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Gospel Choir, the Blend of Men and the QLS Seniors Chorus. Jarvis R. Wilson was born in Atlanta on July 14, 1961. He is the youngest of three children born to the late Clarence and Gladys Wilson. When he was four years old, his mother noticed his aptitude and keen interest in music. He began music lessons under her tutelage and continued to perfect his gift under the guidance of Ms. Harriet Few, Mrs. Leila Alexander and Mr. James Jones. Jarvis also received training from the late Mrs. Alberta Williams King (mother of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) at Ebenezer Baptist Church and also from renowned concert organist, Mr. David Stills. A true lover of gospel music, Jarvis began playing the organ in church at age 10. Accompanying his mother, Jarvis brought the spirit alive at Troy Street Baptist Church in Atlanta. At the same time, he was a student at D. H. Stanton Elementary School. The band director, Mr. James Camp, took note of Jarvis’s music abilities and recruited him for the school band, training him to play the trombone. After only three months, Jarvis mastered that instrument as well. Since then, as predestined by God, he has been glorifying and magnifying the Lord through music and song. In 1975, Jarvis was hired to play the organ at Atlanta’s Macedonia Baptist Church (Joyland). He was 14 years old and enrolled at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. Jarvis helped organize a singing group at King Middle School called O.S.Y.C. (Operation, Salvation, Youth Crusade). Through their interpretations of gospel music, the group targeted young people and introduced them to Christ. The group served under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy Collier. Jarvis was the pianist/organist and was elected president of the group. O.S.Y.C. traveled throughout the state of Georgia appearing on various radio and television broadcasts. From 1982 until 1997, Jarvis served in many capacities at Ben Hill United Methodist Church in Atlanta. During this period, he was director of the Male Chorus, Women’s Ensemble, Youth Choir and the Young Adult Choir. He also served as the full-time, assistant director of music and interim director of music for two years.

OPENING PRAYER Alice Williams God of living water You brooded over the waters and brought forth your creation. Your waters flowed out of Eden to the ends of the earth, bringing life wherever they went. Your waters nurtured and brought forth the harvest to provide for your children. CONGREGATIONAL REAFFIRMATION OF THE BAPTISMAL COVENANT Bishop Kenneth H. Carter, Jr. Brothers and sisters in Christ: Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we are initiated into Christ’s holy Church. We are incorporated into God’s mighty acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the Spirit. All this is God’s gift, offered to us without price. Through the reaffirmation of our faith we renew the covenant declared at our baptism, Acknowledge what God is doing for us, and affirm our commitment to Christ’s holy Church. RENUNCIATION OF SIN AND PROFESSION OF FAITH On behalf of the whole Church, I ask you: Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world, and repent of your sin? I Do Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves? I Do Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the Church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races? I Do According to the grace given to you, will you remain faithful members of Christ’s holy Church and serve as Christ’s representatives in the world? Opening Worship

Let us join together in professing the Christian faith as contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Eternal Father: When nothing existed but chaos, you swept across the dark waters and brought forth light. In the days of Noah you saved those on the ark through water. After the flood you set in the clouds a rainbow. When you saw our people as slaves in Egypt, you led them to freedom through the sea. Their children you brought through the Jordan to the land which you promised.

Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Tell of God’s mercy each day.

In the fullness of time you sent Jesus, nurtured in the water of a womb. He was baptized by John and anointed by your Spirit. He called his disciples to share in the baptism of his death and resurrection and to make disciples of all nations. Declare his works to the nations, his glory among all people. Pour out your Holy Spirit, and by this gift of water call to our remembrance the grace declared to us in our baptism. 6 2013 Florida Annual Conference Worship Book

OPENING PRAYER Reverend Sharon Austin Most merciful and gracious God, send your heavenly blessings upon this your Church, that all its members may dwell together in unity and love, and magnify your mercy, grace and love to all of your creation, to all of your beloved children. Keep far away from us all self-will and discord so that all that we do and all that we are speaks your Grace and Peace. Grant us grace to fearlessly contend against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and not rest until all who thirst have plenty of clean water, until all who hunger are filled, until all who are left out know your acceptance, until all who are weighed down by sin are lifted up by your never-ending Grace. May we be so bound up in love with those for whom we pray that we may feel their needs as acutely as our own, and intercede for them with sensitiveness, with understanding and with imagination. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

It is right to give our thanks and praise. Blessed are you, God of all creation, source of all mercies, fount of love beyond all measure. It is fitting and right to give you thanks and praise, and to adore you with grateful hearts and voices. For wondrously you have created heaven and earth, hovering in gracious care over all that you have made. You have formed us as your image of love in the world. Yet even more wondrously, when we distorted your image You called us back again and again, forgiving us, delivering us from captivity to sin and death, feeding, healing, reconciling, making covenant, and setting before us the way which leads to life. Therefore, with your people in all ages, in communion with the saints, and with the whole company of heaven, we join the glad song of unceasing praise:

Service of Word and Table

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might; Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Holy are you, and blessed be your name, gracious God, for you gave us Jesus, who emptied himself that we might be filled, who suffered and died that we might live. He fed the hungry, healed the afflicted, and ate with sinners. He washed his disciples’ feet and gave a holy meal as a feast of his ever-present love On the night he gave himself up for us and for the world, at table with those who would desert and deny him, he took bread, gave it to his disciples, saying: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” When supper had ended, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, Gave it to his disciples, saying: “Drink from this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Therefore, remembering Christ’s life of ministry and service, his suffering, death and resurrection, his ascending to glory and his abiding presence through the power of your Holy spirit, we come in praise and thanksgiving with these gifts of your love, as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen Christ will come again. Pour our your Holy Spirit upon us gathered here in Christ’s name, and upon these gifts, that they may be for us his body and blood; and so feed us with his grace that, in union with Christ, we may become a living offering to you. Remember, God of all mercy, those who suffer this day from injustice or poverty, with no place to call home. Remember those who are sick, imprisoned, or troubled and those who face death with no one to comfort them. Remember, God of all children, those who are seeking to understand who they are and grow in their purpose for your Kingdom.

And now, with the confidence of children of God, let us pray: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins As we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Change the World

LITANY OF OUR COVENANT TO A NEW VISION

Dawn Fleming

Come Holy Spirit and abide among us Lord, you have called us to do Kingdom work in our conference. The harvest is plentiful and we are your workers. Come Holy Spirit and be alive among us We come to this work knowing we have obstacles, new challenges, daunting statistics, but a hopeful future, and a brilliant vision. Come Holy Spirit and be renewed among us We look around and see hurting communities both outside and inside the church; we know there is hunger for food both physical and spiritual. Come Holy Spirit and help us see the food we have to offer We know that for people to feel full, change must occur; in our structure, in our churches, in our habits, but most importantly in our hearts. Come Holy Spirit and prepare us for change and the work it calls us to You have said,“unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it will remain a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Come Holy Spirit and separate the wheat from the chaff in our hearts, and in our churches Thousands of people in our state are not connected to a faith community, numerous churches are dying. These numbers pain us, but you are calling us to continue to bear fruit. Come Holy Spirit and bring to life the fruits of the vine, filling us with abundance You have said we cannot continue to put new wine into old wineskins or the wine will be spilled Come Holy Spirit and stretch our hearts and churches to hold old and new in the paradox of growth New every morning is your love, Great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Come Holy Spirit and give us new vision for a future with hope Write it plain among us, so that a runner can see it on the wall. Begin with our hearts, our call, our eyes, and our ministries. Come Holy Spirit and stir our hearts this day Stir up in us A desire to serve you in our churches and our community A vision and the courage to follow you wherever you are leading A passionate heart to live for and with our neighbors A will to devote each day to your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ our Lord. At your licensing or ordination, you received authority to read the Holy Scriptures in the church of God, to preach the Word, to celebrate the Sacraments, and to Order the life of the Church. At your commissioning, you received authority to equip the people of God, and to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. There were times that the road was rough and the way unclear, but God’s goodness and guidance has seen you through.

ALL

We give thanks to God for the light you have shone and the seeds you have sown.

BISHOP

Never think lightly of the great good that God has wrought through you. And continue to be true to your calling. This is a transition, not a finale. This is an opening to new horizons of service, not the end of the road. May God’s love and power be with you always. Let us pray together.

ALL

God of grace, you fill your servants with vision. You empower your servants with your Spirit. We give thanks for the ministry of these women and men, and for the ways in which you have ministered to us through them as they built connections and built your Kingdom. Give them a sense of your abiding presence that they may continue to love and serve you, and ever grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. 25 2013 Florida Annual Conference Worship Book

PRESENTATION OF RETIRING SERVANTS Readers: Drew Dancey and Sarah Campbell Reading of the names: Herb Angel Saul Espino Larry Potts Daniel Baker Georgia Gaston Philip Roughton John Beasley Richard Jenks Hardy Sandlin William Beebe Greer Jensen Brette Sanford Guido Benazet Denman Jones Richard Walker Paul Butler Barry Lane John Wannall Dan Campbell JoAnn Mann Charles Weaver Don Corbit Phil Maynard Thomas Weber Montfort Duncan Mary Beth Packard Douglas Zipperer Bruce Ebert Thomas Pfaff THE PASSING OF THE MANTLE A representative of the retiring class and a representative of the new full member class kneel. The bishop takes the mantle and places it on the shoulders of the representative of the retiring class, Denman Jones, saying: In the book of Kings we read of the Prophet Elijah’s ministry. The mantle, symbolic of submission to God, fell upon the younger prophet, Elisha, and the spirit of Elijah rested upon Elisha. The representative of the retiring class, Denman Jones, rises and places the mantle on the shoulders of Jaime Faberlle, the representative of the new full member class, saying: I transfer this mantle from our generation to the young, indicating thereby that the responsibilities and dedication of the older generation will be caught up and carried on by the young, and the spirit of today’s Elijahs will rest upon today’s Elishas. The representative of the new class rises, turns to the retiring class and says: We who come after you take up the mantle which falls upon us. May we inherit a double share of your spirit. THE CHARGE BISHOP

For everything there is a season, a time for every matter under heaven. So, too, there is a time for movement, new adventure, fields of service not yet touched. With love, we send you forth in the spirit of John Wesley: May the world be your parish.

PROCLAMATION SCRIPTURE LESSON SERMON

Ephesians 4:1-6 “What Would Wesley Do?”

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, Eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in the one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. As commissioned or ordained ministers, you are to be coworkers with the laity, bishops, deacons, diaconal ministers, deaconesses, home missioners, commissioned ministers, local pastors and elders.

Do you believe that God has called you to the life and work of ordained ministry?

COMMISSIONING OF PROVISIONAL DEACONS AND ELDERS The Bishop stands to center stage. The bishop may introduce the act of commissioning, using these or similar words: BISHOP

By affirming the covenant of baptism, all members of Christ’s Holy church pledge to serve as Christ’s representatives in the world. Christ gave all of us this command: “Ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest.” We have asked, and the Lord has answered. These sisters and brothers know our Savior’s concern for God’s people, see the plentiful harvest, and are ready to respond generously to the Lord in the words of the prophet: “here I am; send me.”

Urged on by the love of Christ and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, they now come to declare in public their desire to live out the covenant made at their baptism by binding themselves to the service of God under the supervision of the bishop and the guidance of ordained colleagues and by being appointed to share as servant leaders in the Body of Christ. Today we commission them to service as they continue to prepare for ordained ministry among us.

The bishop, facing the candidates and extending arms over all of the candidates, prays: BISHOP

God of the apostles and prophets, of the martyrs and teachers, you raise up men and women to be apostolic leaders in your church. By your Holy Spirit help these, your servants, to understand and live the mystery of your love with boldness and joy. Deepen their sense of purpose as they exercise commissioned ministry. Empower them, and those who will walk with them to guide their ministry, together with all of your people, to heal the sick, love the outcast, resist evil, preach the Word, and give themselves freely for your name’s sake.

The bishop, standing at the kneeler and laying both hands upon the shoulders of each candidate, prays: BISHOP

Pour out your Holy Spirit upon (Name). Send him/her now to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, to announce the reign of God, and to equip the church for ministry, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

THE ORDINATION OF DEACONS AND ELDERS The Bishop introduces the act of ordination BISHOP

Ordination is a gift from God to the church and is exercised in covenant with the whole church and within the covenant of the order of deacons or elders. My sisters and brothers in Christ, you have been called to an ordained ministry. The church now confirms your calling through ordination.

The candidate for ordination of Deacon proceeds onto the stage. MUSICAL INTERLUDE EXAMINATION OF DEACON The bishop examines the deacon candidate: BISHOP

A deacon is called to share in Christ’s ministry of servanthood, to relate the life of the community to its service in the world, to lead others into Christian discipleship, to nurture disciples for witness and service, [Here a large Bible may be lifted by an assistant.] to lead in worship, to teach and proclaim God’s Word, to assist elders and appointed local pastors at Holy Baptism and Holy Communion, [Here a towel and basin with pitcher may be lifted by an assistant.] to interpret to the church the world’s hurts and hopes, to serve all people, particularly the poor, the sick, and the oppressed, and to lead Christ’s people in ministries of compassion and justice, liberation and reconciliation, even in the face of hardship and personal sacrifice. These are the duties of a deacon.

Do you believe that God has called you to the life and work of a deacon?

CANDIDATE I do so believe. BISHOP

Will you, for the sake of the church’s life and mission covenant to participate in the order of deacons? Will you give yourself to God through the order of deacons in order to sustain and build each other up in prayer, study, worship, and service?

CANDIDATE I will, with the help of God, and with the help of my sisters and brothers in the order of deacons. LAYING ON OF HANDS AND PRAYER FOR DEACON The Bishop calls the people to prayer using these or similar words: BISHOP

As this person is ordained by God and the church for the ministry of deacons to which we believe she has been called by the Holy Spirit, let us pray for her. We thank you, Living God, that in your great love you sent Jesus Christ to take the form of a servant, becoming obedient even to death on the cross, and now resurrected and exalted in the heavens. You have taught us, by his word and example, that whoever would be great among us must be servant of all.

We praise you, eternal God, because you have called us to be a priestly people, offering to you acceptable worship through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Apostle and High Priest, Shepherd and Bishop of our souls. We thank you that, by dying, Christ has overcome death and, having ascended into heaven, has poured forth gifts abundantly on your people, making some apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, to build up Christ’s body, and to fulfill your gracious purpose in the world.

Give to these your servants the grace and power they need to serve you in this ministry. Make them faithful pastors, patient teachers, and wise counselors. Enable them to serve without reproach, to proclaim the gospel of salvation, to administer the sacraments of the new covenant, and to offer with all your people spiritual sacrifices acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

A CLOSING SERVICE FOR THE MAKING AND FIXING OF APPOINTMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP

Chuck Weaver

In creation God pronounced humanity good, and together with all creation, very good. Shortly after creation humanity disobeyed God’s will through our sin. Humanity fell from the image in which we are created – the Image of God. Our God did not leave us fallen. God immediately set us on a path towards recovering our created image, a path of becoming. Together with Scriptural witnesses we continue our becoming. Like Joshua we become as we declare that for our houses - our individual residences, our local churches, our annual conference - we will serve The Lord. Like Ezekiel we become as we anticipate God rattling our dry bones into revitalized life. Like the woman bent double we become as Christ enables us to stand. Like Lazarus we become as Christ raises us up to return to service. Like Judas we become as we hear Jesus call us friend even though we betray and flee. Like the women at the empty tomb we become as we will run from this place, in a manner of continual becoming, as witnesses of our Jesus who gifts eternal life. Like Stephen we become as we face great risk to defend the name and ministry of our Christ. Like Lydia we become as The Lord opens our hearts and leads us in hospitality. Like Peter we become as we await our commission, “feed my lambs, care for my sheep, feed my sheep.” And as we continue becoming disciples we more heartily and humbly proclaim, “Yes Lord. You know I do. You know I will.” OPENING HYMN
