KS5 SPANISH FILM WORKSHOP

For a recent Spanish Film workshop, years 12 and 13 joined together to look at South American cinematography. The session was led by a specialist in Latin American film. We looked at three different Clips of films from different parts of South America and analysed the styles and techniques of the directors. We also focused on the social contexts of the films and found out a bit more about their backgrounds, which was interesting as we were able to compare cultural differences between them, especially in contrast to British and North American film. During the workshop we got involved in different debates and discussions about certain issues that were presented in the film

On Wednesday 29th March the Year 12 and 13 Spanish students had a cultural outing to Meson Don Felipe, an authentic tapas restaurant in Waterloo. Aside from deciphering the menu and ordering all the food in Spanish, students also got to practise their Spanish language skills in several oral “Guess who?” games. It was a fantastic evening enjoyed by all and a great opportunity to taste and try a range of traditional Spanish dishes.

FRENCH EXCHANGE TRIP MARCH 2012

On Wednesday 14th March, Ms Hainey, 14 Year 10 students and myself waited excitedly and a little nervously for our French exchange partners and their teachers to arrive at St Pancras. The double doors opened and chic looking people poured out, but still we waited for the Lycée Gymnase Jean Sturm students and teachers until finally they walked through the doors and a mixture of hugs and two cheek kisses followed.

From then on it was an action packed six days covering the very best that London has to offer. We started in the East with a curry on Brick Lane and a tour of Spitalfields (mostly the vintage shops) before heading South to the London Eye and the Southbank. The curry was a huge success despite initial trepidation and the views from the Eye were superb, thanks to the gorgeous sunshine. It was only reading the Metro the next day that we realised that the lovely haze hanging over the city was in fact smog; très London. We headed to Hampton Court and enjoyed a day in Henry VIII’s company as well as a traditional pub lunch. Some students were brave enough to sample gammon, eggs and chips. The French students were treated by their host families to all sorts of fun, exciting and thoughtful visits and treats over the weekend. The last full day was another busy one starting off in church, then continuing the theme with a visit to St Paul’s Cathedral. After the Tower of London, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, we sat down to a well deserved meal only to finish a fantastic exchange off with a fantastic musical, Wicked. A huge thanks has to go to all fourteen year 10 students and their families, as well as to Ms Hainey for such a successful exchange. I’m sure many long lasting friendships have been made. Ms Calvo

6th Form Art Trip to New YORK On the 5th of March twenty-eight Art students accompanied by Miss Wade, Miss Meyer and Mr. Hunter flew to New York for the biennial 6th Form Art trip. We were welcomed by glorious sunshine that remained throughout the week. After a quick bag drop at the hotel the first task was to explore the exam theme of ‘Encounters, meetings, alliances and combinations’ along the High Line. The High Line is a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. Fuelled by the buzz of New York we ventured further to Times Square with its famous lights. During our stay we visited all the major museums to find inspiration in their overwhelming collections. For each museum specific tasks were planned to generate a large portion of the final exam unit coursework. All students showed great focus and dedication in recording their research through drawings and photography. We were very pleased with the standard of work produced – some museum visitors even asked to buy the work. To gain an insight into possible careers within the Arts, ten students went on a private tour of the New York Times, led by one of the senior picture editors. In the evenings we viewed New York lit by full moon from the Empire State Building and ice-skated in Central Park. On the last day a boat trip gave us a different perspective on Manhattan and the visit to the Armory show gave us a taste of the current art market. It was exciting to see what fantastic work could be produced in one week and how the trip helped to inspire sophisticated final pieces back in London. Who knows, perhaps one day some of these students may find themselves back in New York in the world of work.

This is the sixth year St Marylebone School have taken part in this project. In March a group of Year 8 pupils took part in News Day. They prepared video, audio and text-based news reports for the event.

IS IT THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR GIRL GUIDES? In January 2012, there was only one Girl Guide left in the West Hampstead 2nd pack. Does this mean Girl Guiding is becoming unpopular? For School News Report Thursa and Izzy decided to drop in on packs of Guides and Brownies to get their views. Until very recently, Miranda from Year 7 at St Marylebone School was the only member of her pack in West Hampstead. “It’s quite sad, because there used to be loads of people, but then we all started secondary school and a lot of them dropped out” Our first stop was St Pancras 8th Guides and Brownies where we met a group of 22 Brownies busily tying knots for their knots badge. Almost all of the Brownies we spoke to had at least one person from their school with them. Brownies still seems to be drawing 7-10 year olds in. We asked them whether they were going to become a Guide after they finish Brownies. In each six, only 30% of the girls said that they would be carrying on to Guides. Assistant Leader and Ranger Guide, Claire, thinks it’s down to the image. “It’s not really ‘cool’ to be in Guides or Brownies”. But most of the Brownies and Guides we spoke to can’t understand why you’d want to leave, other than lack of time related issues. Over at Holborn 3rd Guides, Bryony and Honey explained what they get out of Guides. “It’s fun, we can get badges, do cooking and go on outings”. They also thought that a lot of people don’t really know what Guides is, and that could be why people aren’t joining. We also discovered that there are a lot of misconceptions about what Girl Guiding actually is. Sarah in our School News Report team thinks that “Guides drive around the countryside selling chocolate brownies to people”. At our last stop, Hampstead 12th Guides and Brownies the future for Girl Guiding looks brighter; one Brownie even says she never wants to leave. “I want to go to Guides, then Senior Section, and then I want to be a leader. I want to go all the way!” TO VIEW ALL NEWS REPORTS PLEASE VISIT THE SCHOOL WEBSITE www.stmarylebone.westminster.sch.uk

On Tuesday 8th May 50 athletes went to the Millennium Stadium at Battersea Park to compete in the annual Westminster Athletics Competition. The girls competed in their events showing excellence and respect towards their opponents. Their determination shone through with lots of girls winning medals. Overall we came 2nd in the competition scoring 308 points just 12 points behind the winning team and over 126 points more than the 3rd team. Well done to all that took part! Congratulations also go to the Year 7 team who beat 11 other schools to go through to the London Youth Games Super 8’s Athletics Competition at Crystal Palace on Saturday 16th June. Many congratulations to our medal winners:-

A number of pupils from St Marylebone have been selected to represent Westminster at the London Schools Athletics Championship and The LSAA Track & Field Championships, both of which take place next month. We would like to wish all the girls competing in these upcoming events, the very best of luck!

The Swimming Club has proven to be very popular this year and we regularly have 20 enthusiastic girls attend lessons. Over the past two terms the girls have been working hard to achieve the Amateur Swimming Association’s Swimming Challenge Awards. Three girls completed the Rainbow Distance 25m Award: Alisha Walters, Zoe D’Souza and Zara Irvanipour. Nine girls completed the Bronze Award; Flora Price, Annie Brook, Thora Brook, Marnie Mather, Violet Mann, Amina Saasaa, Eleanor Piggot, Irisi Daka and Eliza Cahill. Andrea De Castro has completed the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Honours Awards. Well done to all the students who attend.

Over the last term the Year 7 and 8 teams have been competing fiercely in the Westminster Schools Girls Football League. They have endured horrendous weather conditions to be in contention to reach the finals in June. During the winter months there hasn’t been many matches played, so to get the girls ready for the league a friendly match was organised against Holland Park at Paddington Recreational Ground for the year 7 team. The girls fought in a very competitive match. From a spectators view you would never would have thought it was a friendly! The first half of the match was not a true reflection of their hard work and determination as they came off at half time deflated after conceding 3 goals. However the second half they picked themselves up and came out all guns blazing to score two early goals to put pressure on the opposition. Unfortunately after hitting the post and with the keeper making a few magnificent saves, Holland Park ran out winners scoring in the last minute to make it 4-2. Despite the loss, the girls were determined not to lose heart and were ready to play their first fixture which was against Greycoat’s. The KS3 teams won convincingly, the year 7 team won (3-1) and the year 8 team (4-0). Since then both teams have bonded well and have gone from strength to strength. The Year 7’s won against Paddington Academy 1-0 and the Year 8’s thrashed the opposition 7-0 with Parisa Khanali and Lirona Ibrahimi scoring the goals. Their next fixtures followed suit against Pimlico with outstanding performances from both teams to win 4-1 in each game. This time Scarlett Howarth made an impression for the Year 7’s by playing one half in goal and coming out in the second to score a brace. The final league fixture against St Augustine's was also a very pleasing result for both teams with excellent team spirit, courage and determination shown in both matches. The Year 7’s chased the game from the off, putting every player under pressure and scored a goal in the first five minutes to settle the nerves. There were many chances created in the first half but they just couldn’t find the second. The second half was a completely different story with free flowing football being shown and an excellent captains performance by Maisie Woodford, who led from the front to secure a 7-0 victory. The Year 8 team won 4-1 with goals from Hamisha Soleymani-Nejad and Parisa Khanali. There were also impressive performances from defensive players Gabriella Byrne and Aisha Amari and Maya Giulivi in goal. All girls have been professional, well mannered and organised for the fixtures and hopefully will be competing in the finals day shortly.

The Olympic-themed Sports Day is coming! The coaches are booked and arrangements are well underway. We need all girls to ensure they have completed their permission slips and returned them to school as soon as possible, so we know who will be travelling from school. Full details confirming travel arrangements and timings of the day will be sent home shortly. In the meantime you should be organising your house teams and training at Athletics Club which takes place on Tuesday lunchtimes and afterschool. If you would like to be involved in the Olympic-themed Opening Ceremony you should attend a rehearsal session on Thursday lunchtime. Students should ensure they have appropriate clothing to compete in Sports Day, including supportive trainers. Students may wear house colours and either black shorts or green track suit bottoms. House t-shirts can be ordered from school or online. The password for Orchard clothing to order uniform or PE kitS is SMSuniform.
