DRAMA - DONMAR WAREHOUSE

This year we took part in The Tomorrow Project with Donmar Warehouse. Year 9 and 10 students devised t h e i r o w n performances and showcased them at Soho theatre and Donmar Warehouse itself. The girls performed brilliantly, and were excellent ambassadors for the school.

All That Jazz

Sixth Form play Being part of the Sixth Form musical ‘All That Jazz’, an adaptation of ‘Chicago’, this year was both testing and exhilarating. Rehearsals ran as often as required, and so we all had to commit a big chunk of our extra-curricular time to this. It was absolutely worth it though, as we all had the most enjoyable time getting to know more people in our year and the year above, developing our skills as dancers, actors, and singers, and seeing an actual play come together as a result of our endeavours. We were lucky enough to have the most brilliant and dedicated directors who put everything into making it happen, and although at times it seemed like the most daunting thing that would never be a whole, fluid play, it came together just in time to be a huge success that was just so much fun to be a part of. Holly R-M, 12N

National Theatre Connections Being involved in the National Theatre Connections programme was like nothing I’d ever done before. We had been assigned one of ten plays commissioned by the National Theatre to perform at the Tricycle theatre and we were competing with around eighty other companies that were performing the same play. As well as this, not only were we the only all-female cast, we were also the youngest cast. This challenged us as actors to put everything we had into our performance. With a script so well-written and the fact that we were going to be watched by directors from the National Theatre, it was difficult not to feel at least a little overwhelmed by it all. But, the time and effort that the drama department put in to help prepare us for the performance was astounding and we wanted to do justice to all the work that had been put in. By the time we were on stage and the audience was filing in, it was all down to us. So we nervously grinned at each other, mouthing “We’ll be fine.” And we were. We were more than fine. Kira M, 9D

Scholars’ Concert Wigmore Hall TUESDAY 17TH JUNE 2014

This year’s Scholar’s Concert was hailed by many as being one of the best Scholars’ Concerts yet. Combined, the Scholars showed just how versatile the talent at this school is. The concert featured innovative group performances from the Year 9 Ensemble, Year 7 Ensemble and String Quartet, as well as solo performances from Grace C (8H) who sang Only if for a Night, a beautiful solo flute piece called Sunstreams from Jovana P (9H), Mozart’s Un moto di gioia sung by Milla M (9H), and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata played by Thora Brook (9W). Phoebe H (7N) and Ella T (7W) performed Schubert’s Ländler D. 814, a piano duet which was extremely well executed and professional. Commenting on her overall experience, Phoebe H said: I had never played a duet with anyone from St Marylebone before. It improved my general musicianship skills and taught me how to work effectively with other musicians. It was a pleasure to play in such a prestigious place. Phoebe H, 7N (Music Scholar) We also saw exciting performances from both the Drama and Dance Scholars. Aoife G commented on her experience: Performing in the Scholars Concert was an amazing experience. I really enjoyed adapting to the small space as it was a challenge and helped me improve my spatial awareness. It was an honour to dance in Wigmore Hall. I am thankful for the opportunity. Aoife G, 7N (Dance Scholar) For the finale, all scholars performed a very upbeat version of Pharrell Williams’ Happy. Well done to all performers!

Jazz @ St Marylebone School, 1st July 2014

Year 9 Performing Arts Festival The Colourful World of ‘Seussicals’ The Colourful World of ’Seussicals’ was a culmination of the work completed during the Year 9 Performing Arts Festival which took place over two days. The essence of the Performing Arts Festival is that students work collaboratively within the Arts disciplines. In Forms, Year 9 worked with teachers from Music, Dance, Drama and Art to create the work. The theme for this year’s Performing Arts Festival was Dr. Seuss. Each Form was given a Dr. Seuss story as the starting point for their creative work., such as Yertle the Turtle, I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew , Butter Battle Book , Oh! The Places You'll Go! and The Sneetches .

The students abstracted and interpreted their story in a variety of ways, exploring themes such as acceptance, warfare, life choices, obstacles, hierarchy and courage. The art work, props and costumes were created by each Form in their Art sessions. The work was inspired by the trend of yarn bombing. Each work was created by the students themselves, including the m us ic technolog y and atmospheric soundscapes. Well done Year 9!

Dance Exam Showcase

Once again, GCSE and A Level students presented work of an excellent standard in the annual Dance Exam Showcase. All pieces were choreographed and performed by the students themselves and included a range of styles and stimuli explored. Well done!
