thanks to you FOR DONORS AND SUPPORTERS OF ST MARY’S
MARCH 2016
THANKS TO YOU 2015 HIGHLIGHTS
From the Principal I am delighted to share with you the impact of your generosity to St Mary’s during 2015 in the pages of Thanks to You. It is uplifting for us to know that you share our commitment to providing the very best opportunities and experiences for the girls. I thank you all sincerely for the many different ways you support our students and school – be it prizes, scholarships, additions to our wonderful libraries, enhancing our campus and facilities, or through the Bishop Riley Bequest Society. Last year, we officially opened the Marlene Carter Heritage Centre, a new home for our Archives, and thanks to Building Fund donations, we were able to install extensive storage solutions for our precious collection. What a pleasure it was to see donors celebrate the opening with us. With donations to the Library Fund, we launched the e-library a year ago and it is proving a hugely popular resource with the girls for their leisure-time reading and, increasingly, for their studies. Access to a St Mary’s education is certainly a privilege and one that many families are not able to contemplate for their daughters. Thanks to donors to
the Scholarship Fund, a means-tested Annual Giving Scholarship is now being offered for the first time and will allow one girl entering Year 10 the opportunity to experience all that St Mary’s offers. We look forward to welcoming her to our school and watching her grow and flourish. Our ability to offer places to these bright and talented individuals whose families are not in the financial position for them to attend our school, is limited only by funding. I thank you for all you have done to change the education of one girl and hope you will join me in continuing to support the education of St Mary’s girls of the future. As St Mary’s celebrates its 95th year, we hope you will join us at one, some or indeed, all, of the celebrations to mark a special birthday for this special school. Lynne Thomson Principal
The first Annual Giving Scholarship is being offered for a student entering Year 10 in 2017.
St Mary’s students have access to over 10 000 e-books.
Our precious Archives collection has been consolidated for the first time.
From the
Chairman of the Foundation My thanks to you for your generous support of St Mary’s and the Foundation during 2015. Once again, we have been touched by your support for the school, its students and staff. Building a culture of giving at St Mary’s Over the last 15 years, the Foundation has been able to contribute over $10 million to the school to develop and enhance the learning environment. It is your donations that have helped and will continue to help us to ensure St Mary’s remains at the forefront of girls’ education and we are truly grateful to everyone who makes a gift, be it small or large. Together your gifts better our ability to offer first class learning opportunities and experiences for St Mary’s students. Thanks to you - A new means-tested Scholarship This year, the Foundation is delighted to be in a position to offer the very first means-tested Annual Giving Scholarship to a Year 10 student for the remainder of her schooling at St Mary’s. Your donations to the Annual Giving Scholarship Fund alone have provided the wonderful opportunity of a St Mary’s education for the young women who will be the recipients of this award. Bishop Riley Bequest Society I was delighted to host the annual Bishop Riley Bequest Society at my home last year. It was a pleasure to meet with members of the Society who have made a gift to St Mary’s in their will and I thank them for their generosity and foresight. The Society welcomes everyone who has made a bequest of any size to St Mary’s and I encourage you to be in touch if you are interested in finding out more about how to become a part of this special group of St Mary’s supporters. With thanks,
Bishop Riley Bequest Society Members of the Bishop Riley Bequest Society and guests met in November for the annual Society event, kindly hosted at the home of Chairman of the Board of the Foundation, Mr Ron Farris and Mrs Joy Farris. Guests enjoyed stunning views of the ocean as the sun set and heard news from the school from Mrs Thomson. Over the years a number of members of our school community have chosen to recognise the important part St Mary’s has played in their lives by remembering us in their will. Bequests of all sizes have enabled us to provide learning resources and scholarships and develop our facilities, with each bequest advancing the girls’ learning. If you have made a gift to St Mary’s in your will and would like to join the Society, or would like to find out how to make a bequest to the school, please let us know so that we may thank you for your foresight and generosity.
Exceptional Bequest Boosts Scholarship Fund Last September we learnt that Lady Treatt (Frankie Wilson ‘32, Head Girl) had left a bequest of $750,000 to endow scholarships at St Mary’s. We are honoured that she chose to remember St Mary’s students in this special way. The capital from Lady Treatt’s bequest will be maintained and grown so that St Mary’s can award scholarships in perpetuity. Her great passion for supporting girls’ education will live on in the St Mary’s girls who receive one of these scholarships. We remain indebted to Lady Treatt for her devoted and generous support of St Mary’s over many years.

2015 Annual Giving: at a glance 2015 Annual Giving was once again generously supported by our school community. Together we raised $50,646. Our heartfelt thanks to you for your generosity. We are delighted to welcome many new donors and are grateful to those donors who continued to support Annual Giving in 2015. Your gifts are already making a difference to our students and school. It has been wonderful to have support from all sections of our school community: parents, Old Girls, past parents, future parents, Executive, staff, former staff, members of the Board of Governors, members of the Board of Management of the Foundation and friends. Thank you.

e-library resources support learning In 2015, Year 4 students enjoyed access to the e-book library resources during their Society and Environment lessons. The girls spent time using World Book online, which has been funded by donations to the Library Fund, to research the Aboriginal peoples of Australia before the arrival of the First Fleet, as well as life in England in the 1700s, the journey of the First Fleet and how the new colony in Botany Bay grew. With the information they discovered, the girls each created an historical timeline with images and explanations of the factors that led to the colonisation of Australia. “Access to e-resources in the Junior School library has opened up new learning paths for the girls,” says Ms Letch, Junior School Librarian. “We’re finding that girls who might find the traditional classroom environment challenging, are flourishing using online resources.”

Alisa Camplin OAM inspires at Bishop Riley Memorial Lecture
Your generosity will help to provide scholarships for future generations of St Mary’s girls and in recognition of your support, a vine row at the St Mary’s at Metricup vineyard will be named ‘Class of 2015’.
The St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School Foundation was delighted to welcome Alisa Camplin OAM to present the 95th Birthday Bishop Riley Memorial Lecture in March. The Foundation sponsors this special lecture each significant birthday year. Past speakers have included Mao’s Last Dancer Li Cunxin, 2006 Young Australian of the Year, Trisha Broadbridge, Janine Shepherd AM and Sara Henderson, a former Business Woman of the Year.

Your gifts provide a new scholarship Your generosity to the Scholarship Fund is providing a new Year 10 needs-based scholarship. Thanks to the wonderful generosity of donors to the Scholarship Fund during 2014 and 2015, the Foundation is now able to offer a scholarship to a girl entering Year 10 in 2017 for the duration of her schooling at St Mary’s. The scholarship will provide for at least 50% of tuition fees and will be made to a student who shines academically but who would not be able to attend St Mary’s without financial support. You are helping us to transform the lives of these girls by giving them the opportunity to attend St Mary’s. These young women will, in turn, contribute significantly to the life of the school, both inside and outside the classroom. Thank you for making a difference to their lives.

“I am pleased to make a donation towards the St Mary’s Scholarship Fund as I know what an incredible difference winning a scholarship can make to a student’s life. I was fortunate to be awarded a scholarship in 1958 and commenced my secondary education at St Mary’s in 1959. I graduated in1963 as Proxime Accessit to Dux of our class. Without the support of the scholarship, my parents would not have been able to afford to send me to St Mary’s as a boarder for five years and so I am eternally grateful for the opportunity given to me to enjoy and benefit from a wonderful St Mary’s education.”
“The research is clear – having more females in leadership roles increases the economic returns of organisations. Much of my spare time is spent supporting the development of emerging female leaders in our community. I am delighted to support the St Mary’s Annual Giving Scholarship Programme to enable young female students access to a first class education which circumstances would otherwise prevent them from having. It is my hope that the scholarship recipients will benefit from the work being done today to make the workplace a more welcoming place for females. I look forward to following their careers.”
The impact of a scholarship Lucy Wu (’12) was the recipient of the 2015 Fay Bailey Scholarship for Engineering. Lucy completed her undergraduate degree last year, majoring in Chemical Engineering and Chinese, and is now pursuing a Masters of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Melbourne. “St Mary’s has always provided me with the support and guidance I needed, whether it be through friends or teachers. Even after graduating, I have never felt alone, knowing that I have an extended family of St Mary’s girls behind me. The opportunity of the Fay Bailey Scholarship shows just how far that support reaches, and I am so grateful to have been the 2015 recipient.
“I hope that one day I am able to give back a little of what St Mary’s has so generously given me over the years.”
“Balancing my studies, work and volunteer work was a great struggle and receiving the scholarship gave me the opportunity to invest more time in my studies and volunteer work. I’m passionate about education and I was able to further my involvement in a not-for-profit organisation named Teach Learn Grow. It has been a fantastic opportunity and I have learnt a great deal from it.”
Preserving our history As we celebrate our 95th birthday in 2016, the newly opened Marlene Carter Heritage Centre, which houses St Mary’s Archives, will be a focal point for our community as we remember our school’s story and look to the future. 2014 Annual Giving Building Fund gifts and pledges were directed to the development of the Centre, which underwent a custom-designed refurbishment and extension. As well as providing climate controlled and fire resistant storage rooms, the Centre offers a multi-purpose room, the Heritage Room, where students are already learning about the history of the school and its influential figures. The provision of this additional room has enabled us, for the first time, to welcome volunteers to assist in the sorting and conservation of thousands of unidentified photographs. This invaluable work will help to preserve the story of our school.
