Since our foundation in 1873, the Governors have consistently invested in the schools to ensure the pupils have the highest quality environment to support their learning and provide them with opportunities to excel, as the timeline here shows. Music, Drama, Science, Sport, Libraries and Boarding Houses have all benefited over the years but, with increased numbers in both schools and the desire to provide the most outstanding education for our pupils, the Governors and Heads of the schools believe it is imperative that we continue to develop the schools for the benefit of the current pupils and for those who will join us in years to come providing a lasting legacy just as previous generations have done. These are exciting times for the schools and I hope that this brochure provides you with sufficient information about how we plan to shape the future of education at Calne. Our ambition is to ensure that the schools remain at the very top of independent school education provision in its broadest sense.

Mr Simon Knight Chairman of Governors

St Mary’s and St Margaret’s have an enviable reputation for excellence – excellence academically and pastorally, excellence in the arts and on the sports field. The schools are warm, vibrant and dynamic places where we foster a love of learning and we promote respect for each other and the world. We are going from strength to strength in offering the most outstanding all-round education to our pupils, underpinned by an extraordinary breadth of opportunities. We are committed to caring for our pupils in a supportive and nurturing environment, preparing them for the next stage of their education and ultimately for higher education, careers, leadership and the challenges of a fast-changing global world. To achieve all of this, there is a compelling need to provide the best possible environment in which to teach, learn and live, and to offer opportunities to access our high quality education to those from every background through our bursary and scholarship programmes. Our strategic plan for the next ten years focuses on making all-round improvements in a wider range of curricular and extra-curricular areas. In the short term, we wish to strengthen and broaden the opportunities available to pupils of both schools in sport. In the longer term for St Mary’s, we aim to develop our teaching and learning environment with a particular emphasis on Art and Science, supported by a modern Library and a Performing Arts Centre for musical concerts, recitals and lectures. For St Margaret’s, the immediate focus will be upon enhancing some of the essential ‘functional’ rooms and areas, with a medium term target of dedicated Science, Art and DT spaces. Alongside these projects, we shall, of course, continue to upgrade and refurbish our boarding houses, classrooms and other facilities such as the kitchen and dining hall. Our plans will have a huge impact on school life by providing greater opportunities for our pupils. Moreover, they will enable us to continue to attract the very best teaching and pastoral staff. We hope that you will share in our vision and help to shape the future of education at Calne.

Dr Felicia Kirk Headmistress, St Mary’s

Mrs Karen Cordon Headmistress, St Margaret’s

Our Vision for Sport We strongly believe in the benefits of both individual and team sports and, whether an elite performer or a beginner, all pupils are encouraged to participate and develop whatever their ability. Learning to work and play as a team teaches trust, increases resilience, and builds confidence and self-esteem, all valuable qualities which can be transferred to everyday life.

As our sports results

improve and opportunities for the pupils continue to increase, so too must our sporting provision.

“Our pupils have such a passion for sport and we want to match this passion with facilities and coaching that inspire them to get involved and aspire to excellence.” Mrs Heidi Marvin

Director of Sport, St Mary’s

After carefully reviewing the needs of the pupils, the sports and our competitors, we identified four areas where we felt improvement needed to be made to ensure our vision can be achieved: • a full size astroturf • additional netball/tennis hard courts • offsite pitches • an indoor sports complex.

Thanks to the generosity of a number of our current parents, the school and other members of the community, we have already succeeded in making part of our vision a reality and, over the summer, a full size astroturf and three additional netball/tennis courts were built. We have also entered into a lease with Beversbrook to provide offsite pitches for St Mary’s and with Bowood Sports Ground to provide offsite pitches for St Margaret’s.

What it now means for us Astroturf/Netball Courts • We are now able to host Home hockey matches • The additional netball courts enable us to host tournaments and field more teams on a better quality surface, and include more pupils in competitive sport • There are now more opportunities for more pupils to play tennis - the astro will provide 9-12 tennis courts for use in the Summer Term • Both the astro and the new netball courts are floodlit to enable play to continue in the winter months up to 8pm • The astro is a fantastic all weather facility, invaluable when the grass pitches are frozen or waterlogged • It will ensure the schools remain competitive in attracting good sportsmen/ women

Phase 1:

Phase 2: Offsite land COMPLETE

Phase 3: Sports Complex To be completed between 2014-2017

“I truly believe that sport is a key component of an all-round education; learning to own your victories and cope with your defeats gives pupils grit, determination and ultimately a sense of self-belief and confidence.” Dr Felicia Kirk

Our Vision for Sport Phase 3 The final phase of our Vision for Sport is to extend the Sports Centre.

This indoor PE space will be

invaluable, particularly in wet weather, and could be used by the community in holiday periods. It will enable us to broaden the range of sporting opportunities for the pupils of St Mary’s and St Margaret’s and improve and enhance the physical education of all our pupils.

“We will be able to do so much more with the indoor Sports Complex... it will mean that we can maximise every opportunity for the children to play a wide range of sports throughout the year.” Mr Dan Dury Head of PE, St Margaret’s

The Sports Complex will include: • a sports hall (34.7m x 20m) • enlarged dance studio which can be divided into two smaller spaces • dry side changing rooms with showers for visiting teams • family/accessible changing facilities • a viewing gallery • improved staff facilities. What it will mean for us • The Sports Complex will be an invaluable indoor sporting facility for us, particularly when the weather is bad • The Sports Hall will offer opportunities for: • badminton (4 courts) • indoor netball, tennis and hockey • 5 aside football • cricket nets • volleyball • basketball • gymnastics • trampolining • Four dividing sections will mean that we can timetable more than one user in the hall • The enlargement of the existing dance studio will enable us to divide the studio into two smaller spaces providing an additional facility for school use so we can offer more dance classes as well as additional activities such as yoga and Pilates • Two dry side changing rooms with showers will be built for the benefit of both the users of the sports hall and visiting teams • There will be direct access to the pitches from the back of the building by these changing rooms • The multi-purpose room could be used for fitness classes, meetings, match teas or simply as a viewing gallery over the sports hall • Pupils need to have easy access to their PE teachers and, therefore, the PE Office will be relocated to the ground floor with direct external access.

Proposed

Future Key Projects under development and Consultation The following projects have been identified as key areas for improvement over the medium and longer term for St Mary’s and St Margaret’s: • Art School • Science Centre • Library • Performing Arts Centre • The Southwell Centre for the Arts • Science Laboratory • Lansdowne House - Kindergarten & Maggots • Enhanced Support Facilities

Art School Development Art at St Mary’s is an area of excellence and the girls’ outstanding artwork is on permanent display around the school. Our aim is to cultivate girls’ enthusiasm and curiosity for the visual world through observational rigour and the introduction of a wide range of imaginative, aesthetic and creative experiences. The Art School is housed in purpose-built studios, but the current space is limiting and the girls would benefit greatly from more space to develop their artistic talents in painting and drawing, sculpture, textiles, ceramics, printmaking and photography. Our plan is to extend the current building into the courtyard to create a larger, light and airy Art School which has flexibility of use. A mezzanine floor will house two separate studios

“The extension to the Art School at St Mary’s will bring real benefit to the girls by providing a vibrant, creative environment to inspire and encourage them, and allow their individuality and artistic ambitions to grow and develop.” Miss Candia Bradshaw

which will overlook the four studios below.

Director of Art

Our plans include: • separate studios for both UVI and LVI Form Artists • a studio for our Artist in Residence • flexible studio space with cleverly designed movable studio walls • an art library and research area • outdoor studio space • a darkroom and production space for film photography, digital studio and associated editing studio.

Science Centre The vision we have for the Science Faculty is immensely exciting and is designed to meet the needs of the growing number of girls interested in Science at St Mary’s. In our LVI Form, two thirds of the year have chosen Science AS subjects, with unprecedented numbers opting to study AS Physics. In order to ensure that our laboratory provision (and corresponding technician support) keeps pace with increasing student numbers and their desire to keep abreast of new developments and technology, it is vital that we continue to provide first-class facilities that are modern and up-to-date. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education is a major priority at St Mary’s and it is important that we help our pupils to engage with these strategically important subjects.

“Building this new Science Centre will allow St Mary’s to become leaders in STEM education, ensuring that our pupils have the knowledge and skills they need in an increasingly scientific and technological society.” Mrs Alexandra Ballard Head of Science

Our plans include: • building two additional laboratories to enable us to provide dedicated subject labs and a dedicated Sixth Form investigation lab • building an associated prep room to support these facilities & a staff workroom • refurbishing the existing laboratories to provide separate areas for theory and practical work • building a lecture theatre to host visiting speakers and demonstrations • building computer science labs incorporating 3D printers, data logging output facilities, digital microscopes...

What it will mean for us • All Science lessons will take place in dedicated science spaces, enhancing the learning opportunties on a daily basis for the girls • It will allow St Mary’s to become a regional centre for STEM learning • It will bring real benefit to the girls by providing first class facilities in which to foster excitement and intellectual challenge in the Sciences, leading to a greater uptake of STEM subjects by St Mary’s pupils at A Level and beyond • It will help us to attract talented scientists to the the school and retain the finest teachers.

New Library Our new library will be a lively academic hub of the school incorporating information management and Web Technology. A bright, airy, modern, comfortable, warm and fun space, our library will be free from the stuffiness that one sometimes finds in many older libraries. Traditional library spaces can sometimes look like a repository for books as if one has not thought about those who use the space.

What it will mean for us • It will not be a completely quiet, controlled space but a playful and free place which will instill a love of reading, research and learning in our girls, encouraging exploration and the pursuit of knowledge, as well as collaboration and the sharing of ideas • It will have a great range of books and journals, as well as a good number of online resources so that we combine a traditional library service with access to technology, making the internet a big part of the operations • An express checkout station will mean that girls can check out their own books, thus freeing up the librarians to assist with research and resources • It will encourage girls to ‘hang out’ in the library, have coffee in the café while they pursue their broad range of interests, using the library’s resources • There will be space in which to hold events, exhibitions, informal talks/lectures, societies and clubs, eg Debating Society, Book Club and Archive Exhibitions • There will be a quiet study room and individual work spaces, as well as small breakout rooms with a multimedia room and seminar rooms for Sixth Form work.

Performing Arts Centre This ambitious new facility will transform the school’s provision for Music and the Performing Arts. The school and the wider community will benefit from this state of the art venue which will proudly take its place at the heart of the school. The Centre will offer a vital and much needed space where the whole school can gather and where we can warmly welcome parents and the community. Our Performing Arts Centre will be an environment that stimulates musical life and imagination. Music has always played an important part in life at St Mary’s but we urgently need a performance space to showcase and accommodate our talent and welcome a larger audience. Our Chapel and Theatre have very limited acoustic properties and limited seating. The Performing Arts Centre will reflect the quality of the school, supporting current pupils and attracting potential musicians, parents and the community.

“ St Mary’s impressive professional approach to the Performing Arts is a key, magical ingredient of the school’s unique calibre. Who knows how high the Arts can fly at St Mary’s with such a dynamic investment in the future?” Sir Tim Rice Patron of the Arts

Our plans include: • An acoustically and aesthetically impressive auditorium with 450 seats on two levels, connecting to both the existing Dining Room and Top Hall • Backstage space connecting directly to the existing Music School which can be used for Green Rooms, warm up areas and costume storage • Raked seating which can retract to provide a multi-purpose, flexible space which can be used with functionality for examinations but will predominantly allow imaginative use for whole school and community events • A Song School in the Cathedral tradition • A purpose in-built PA system and lighting and sound booth.

What it will mean for us • The whole school community will be able to enjoy concerts, assemblies, lectures, presentations and career conferences • We will be able to invite other leading schools to appear alongside our talented performers and encourage collaborations to take place here which we cannot do at present. Local choral societies, local schools and festivals would also be welcome • We will be able to welcome parents to come to whole school events such as our Spring Concert which would be more professionally managed and enjoyable • It will ensure that we maintain our competitive edge and are able to attract talented musicians to the school with our continued professional approach to Music combined with facilities which encourage first class performances • The Song School will attract high calibre choristers at 13+ for our Choral Scholarships • It will provide opportunities to celebrate our musicians of all levels, encouraging greater enjoyment of learning, performing and sharing musical talent • It will allow further fundraising for the school as we will attract touring musicians, drama and dance companies.

St Margaret’s Preparatory School “St Margaret’s has developed extensively in recent years. It is vital that we continue to allow the children to be the best they can be; these exciting projects will provide experiences and opportunities which will enable us to make this a reality.” Mrs Karen Cordon Our plans for St Margaret’s can be divided into 4 distinct projects which will be phased over 10 years to take into account affordability, construction sequence and minimising disruption to school life. Project 1: The Southwell Centre for The Arts Project 2: The Science Laboratory Project 3: The Lansdowne House Development for Kindergarten and Maggots Project 4: Enhanced Support Facilities

The Southwell Centre For The Arts The Southwell Hall was built in 2000 to accommodate 150 people. With the growth in school numbers, we need to extend the Hall so that we can warmly welcome parents and the community to events, and meet the needs of the current pupils. The Hall is the only large space at St Margaret’s and it is heavily used during the day for assemblies, drama, music, indoor sport for the youngest children, clubs and activities; in the evening it is used for major school events and by the community. In order to meet the needs of the school, our plan is to extend the existing Hall into the current Music Room and to build a 2 storey extension to accommodate Art, DT and Music facilities. Dedicated spaces for these subjects will enhance and enrich our pupils’ learning, stimulating creativity and development.

“I am confident and talkative; however, knowing that St Margaret’s may provide more facilities for The Arts has left me speechless with excitement and anticipation.” Beatrice, Year 6

Our plans include: • An extension to the Southwell Hall so that it can accommodate 250 people on raked seating • A large music teaching room and 4 music practice rooms, including a fully soundproofed Drum Room • A specialist Art Room • A dedicated Design Technology Room.

What it will mean for us • A larger hall will enable us to welcome more parents and friends to concerts and drama productions • The new music rooms will be able to be used as green rooms and warm up areas for productions, and the change in orientation of the hall will mean that the audience will no longer need to enter via the stage • The Art School will be a light and airy room where the children will be able to work on large and messy projects, and develop their skills and their ability to work both collaboratively and independently • Our dedicated DT Room will be a flexible space where our pupils will be able to gain an understanding of how things work, alongside the process of designing with a purpose in mind. With the increased focus on food technology within the primary curriculum, this specialist room will be appropriately equipped to allow for cooking and baking; it will also have workbenches and specialist tools for a range of DT projects, eg woodwork and electrical circuitry.

PROJECT UNDER DEVELOPMENT AND CONSULTATION

The Science Laboratory At St Margaret’s, we aim to develop our pupils’ natural curiosity about the world by providing opportunities for practical investigation in Science. We plan to convert the existing Maggots Room into a Science Laboratory to enable pupils to carry out a wide range of stimulating and exciting experiments in support of their independent learning, resilience and investigational skills. Through the acquisition of scientific concepts, skills and knowledge, children are guided to an understanding that Science is a vital part of everyday life.

“Science comes to life if you can actually touch and experiment with things. Learning in our own laboratory would mean that ordinary lessons became extra-ordinary!” Oliver, Year 6

Our plans include: • A laboratory with an area of tiered seating for demonstration and teaching purposes, and modular benches for practical work • Furnishing the laboratory with age appropriate equipment, as well as digital cameras and computers which will allow teachers to integrate technology into their lessons • Conversion of the PE Office to a Science Preparation Room adjacent to the laboratory.

What it will mean for us • We will be able to offer a hands-on laboratory experience throughout KS2 • It will enable young children to experiment in a safe and bespoke environment • It will enable us to provide open-ended challenges and to further develop the children’s investigative and cognitive learning skills.

PROJECT UNDER DEVELOPMENT AND CONSULTATION

Kindergarten and Maggots St Margaret’s Kindergarten offers a pre-school experience for children from the age of 3. Additionally, our after-school and holiday club, known affectionately as ‘Maggots’, provides wrap-around care for children of all ages from 3.30 – 6pm during term time, as well as full days during the Easter and Summer holidays. We plan to relocate them to Lansdowne House and create a dedicated centre for our youngest children and a homely environment for Maggots. The location of Lansdowne House, so close to the existing school building but set apart in landscaped gardens, is ideal for our youngest pupils as they embark on school life for the first time. For them and the older children, Maggots will be a real home from home – a perfect environment in which to relax after lessons and clubs have ended.

“I adore going to Maggots. We sometimes cook and it would be amazing to have our own kitchen. We also do lots of Art & Craft and I would love our own ‘messy’ room – a big one!” Claire, Year 3

What it will mean for us • For Kindergarten children, Lansdowne House will provide a large, homely environment with increased access to outdoor space, whilst still retaining, due to its close proximity to the main school, the existing high standards of transition • Our new Maggots will have areas for the children to have fun, socialise with their friends, dine and relax. It will also have a quiet workspace where the children can do their prep • The move to Lansdowne House will facilitate the reconfiguration of many teaching and communal areas within the existing school building.

PROJECT UNDER DEVELOPMENT AND CONSULTATION

Enhanced Support Facilities St Margaret’s Preparatory School is thriving and growing. With 220 children now on roll, we need to develop our facilities and infrastructure to meet the operational needs of the school and our pupils. We encourage the children to become increasingly independent and it is vital that the functional areas of the school are designed to assist them in organising and caring for their belongings. Communication with parents is also vital, particularly in a growing school, and we plan to restructure the administrative areas of the school to facilitate improved access to all of our support services.

Our plans include: • Additional changing rooms for KS2, bringing the total number to six • A dedicated pupil entrance and reception area with easy access to the new changing facilities • An additional storage facility for KS2 sporting equipment and outdoor clothing • An enlarged and staffed main reception area with enhanced security • Reconfiguration and refurbishment of existing rooms to provide: • A first aid room • An enhanced school shop and uniform store • Improved administration offices • Improved staff facilities with dedicated working spaces.

What it will mean for us • There will be increased changing room space for the children and their kit, which will enable them to stay organised and improve their independence skills • The new pupil entrance will facilitate free flow of people around the school at peak times, as well as allowing the KS2 children to store their outdoor clothes and PE kit more efficiently • The transition between academic lessons, sport and extra-curricular activities will be quicker, as the children will have space to change more rapidly; they will then be able to maximise the time spent both in the classroom and on the wider school site • In the winter months especially, the impact of muddy and wet clothing will be minimised • The new administration offices will enable parents to access an increased range of services, housed within a dedicated area of the school.
