Girls will be free to be with their parents - if staying in lodgings-from 2 o'clock until 7. 30 p .m. As all hotels and restaurants are out of bounds parents staying in hotels, or as guests in private houses, are invited to tea at the school at 4 p.m. Prayers will be, read in Chapel at 8. (They should not go to Mattins). 2. 30 Confirmation Service-by the Bishop of Sherborne-in the Parish Churc~. Parents are asked to be there before 2.1 S ; special seats are reserved for them. for which tickets are required. 3.4S All the parents and friends are asked to come up to the school for tea directly after the service. S. :\1ARY' S SCHOOL, CALNE , WILTS. January 5th, 1944. My dear O.G.A. , Christmas time has again brought remembrances-how I wish I could answer them all personally-from all over the world, and it is very heart warming to find how very many of your thoughts turn to old days at S. Mary's. We are very proud of you, and very thankful for your remembrance of us in your busy, changed lives. I am writing once again on the first Wednesday of January, a day on which we have so often in the past held our London Reunions. It has been most disappointing that 1943 saw no official Reunion, but if possible we a.re hoping to arrange one in OXFORD next June. If those who see the slightest cha.nee of being able to attend this will let us know (on the enclosed ca.rd) a. notice will be sent, should our hopes materialise. I am so grateful to the O.G.A.. for once more allowing this letter to go out with the business notices, as it is good to be able to let you all know how well and happily the School life continues. Our seventieth year was marked in so many ways, chief of all being a visit from Queen Mary. We had one day's notice, and then she arrived and went everywhere, ta.king a keen interest in all sorts of details,-blackout, lockers, school-cloaks, as well as all our pictures, and above all our buildings. Her Lady-in-Waiting wrote afterwards to say" Queen Ma1路y was very much interested in seeing the school, and her Majesty was particularly charmed with the beautiful Hall and the bright and delightful dining room. Her Majesty bids me thank you for the copy of S. Mary's News' Sheet, the" Old Girls' Record" is indeed an inspiring one." With the letter came a beautiful copy of Her Majesty's Dolls' House Book, as a gift to the School Library. We kept our Seventieth Birthday on Founder's Day. on July 2nd. We did not feel it right in war time to send out invitations, but in spite of that we had a splendidly representative gathering, about forty Old Girls being present. It was delightful tha,t Miss Alexander and Miss Damant were able to come, and our O.G.A. Chairman, Ivy Martin. There were full accounts of our Festival in "The News Sheet" We were surprised and delighted with the munificent cheque given us by the 0.G.A. This was to be spent on books or pictures, but we decided on the latter as books" in battle dress" will hardly be a lasting momento. We were most fortunate in being able to purchase three delightful water colour sketches by Miss Hester Frood, which were exhibited in London last October. One of these is of Salisbury Cathedral, the others are of Connemara and a Scotch scene. They hang in Gabriel. Another delightful reminder of our Seventieth Birthday will always be the setting by Mr. Christopher Le Fleming to Bridges'. "I love all beauteous things." This is a unison song with descant. It has been dedicated to S. Mary's, and is published by J. B. Cramer & Co. We are indeed fortunate in that Mr. Le Fleming is now teaching all our singing. A.n innovation this y ear, a nd one we hope it will always be possible to repeat, was a Carol Service given by the Rchool in the Parish Church, which was packed to the doors. S. Mary ' s never forgets you all, and once again it is with a very full heart that I send out this letter to take to you om路 very best hopes and wishes for this fateful new year. May I end by quoting some words of Masefield: "When people are happy together I am quite certain that they build up something eternal, something both beautiful and divine, which weakens the power of evil things upon the life of men and women." My prayer is that the happiness of your School life here may have strengthened yon a ll for all that you have suffered in 1943 and for what may come to you in 1944. Yours affectionately, E. M. SCHOOLS LACROSSE TOURNAMENT A successful Lacrosse Tournament was held on Saturday, Aprm 1st, 1944, at Sit. George's School, Harpenden, by permission of Dr. A. H. WatJts. Twenty teams took parrt. The Tournament was American, consisrting of four groups with five teams in each, so rthat every team played four matches of seven minutes each way, ithe winners of each group playing a semifiinal and a final. Darrtford Physical Training College and St. Mary's, Calne, Bedford Physical Training College and Queen Anne's, Caversham, were the semi-finalists. Bedford beat St. Mary's in the final by rtwo goals rto one. It was encouraging to see rthat in spite of war-rtime difficulties the srtandard of play on ii.be whole was good. An excel:l ent demonsrtrnition game was played at the end of rthe afternoon. Many international and experienced pl·a yer s, including Mrs. Bird, R . Bond, R. Bowie, M. Boyd, Mrs. Buxrton, F. Digby, iK. Haydock, Mrs. Heagarrty, M. Lewis and G. Prnston, it ook part. The umpire was Miss C. M. Read, who also gave a shorit talk on the aims and work of rthe All England Ladies Lacrosse Association. This gathering was rthe first of irts kind since the outset of war and congrartula tions and 1thanks are due to Miss Boyd, who was responsible for the organisaJtion. Thanks are also due rto tbe various stewards and to all rthose who corutributed to the success of rthe Tournament.

After thirty years of strenuous work she felt the time had come to hand over her charge to other hands. Needless to say the Governors accepted her resignation with the utmost regret which will be shared by you and all who have children at the school. 30th November, 1944. My dear O.G.A., At a recent meeting of the Governors I told them that I felt the time had come for them to look out for my successor, and so I am to leave S. Mary's next July. Although I do not feel a bit worn out yet, I have come to this decision because I know it is essential that the New Headmistress should be well settled in before there come abbut all the changes foreshadowed, for schools like ours, by the Fleming Report, to say nothing of all the new building that must be done here (Form Rooms and Gymnasium) as soon as we can get priority. I came to S. Mary\; in 1915, so you see I shall have had a splendidly long innings by next July, and it is due to all of you-to your parents- to the Sta.ff and t o the Governors, that it has been so ama zingly happy a thirty years. This is just to say Thank you from all my heart to you all, and to tell you t h at the one thing that is going to make my going easy is the thought that none of you will feel that your links with the school are in any way broken. S. Mary's will need all your loyalty and co-operation in the future as in the past. A Reunion we must have before I go, and I am looking forward to one next summer. Full details will be sent later. By reunions, by your continued support of the Health Festival, and by the News Sheet (and above all by entering your daughters here !-there are six here already) the continuity will never be broken, and under the new Headmistress (she is to be appointed on February 17th.) the school will go from strength to strength. I have bought a delightful little cottage, six miles from Marlborough, not too far off-when petrol returns- for you to visit me when you come to the school. And how I hope you will do so ! The Mayoi: complimented the orchestra on its work and said that it was a matter of gratification that such an orchestra C'Ould be formed from local talent under a local conductor. O~ to the indisposition of1 Mr. Edwara Green, the orchest1' was capably led by Miss Eileen Williams. In addition to the orchestral items, the programme included: Songs by .l{athleen Hutchings (accompanied by Stanley Parkinson); 'cello solos by W. Josty (accompanied by Miss Barbara Nesbit); trombone solos by Alfred IW'atts (accompanied by Dave Jenkins); trio by Eileen Williams (violin), Susan Roberts (oboe), Barbara Nesbit (piano), all me of the s • · w1 w is ances arrange y J. Brown; and violin solos by W. Smith (accompanied by Stanley Parkinson). The conductor and members of the orchelltra are indebted to Dr. A. K. James for this help, which no doubt largely coniri· buted to the success of ihe eveniug.

ST. MARY'S SCHOOL

Miss Matthews Resigning It is announced that . Miss Matthews, who has been Principal of St. Mary's School for the past 29! years, is resigning, the resigna. tion to take effect next July, when s he will have completed 30 years at the School. When Miss Matthews was appointed the School was on a much smaller scale than now, but thanks largely to her !>rillianey as a headmistress it has considerablv increased in numbers during recent years until it has berome recognised as one of the foremost ladies' Schools in the West. There will be plenty of opportunity later on to pay due tribute to l\Iiss Matthews· devoted and unceasing work for the school; meanwhile it need only be recorded t;hat the resignation will be received with extreme regret n.ot only by tne townspeople, but by the scholars themselves, with whom she has ever been popular. Apart from her duties as principal of the school, Miss Matthews has taken a leading part in many of the town's activities. She was made a magistrate some ~ago and is chairman of the .Juvenile' O:>nrt, while for some months past she has invariably presided at the senior Court.

SCHOOL CHOIR'S CAROL SERVICE. On Sunday afternoon the choir of St. Mary's School delighted a large congregation at the P~nsh Church with a beautiful rendermg of c;arols. Scholars r.ead portions of Scriptl;lre during the service. A collection was taken for the Church Organ Fund.

Field, and in her the Governors feel- as indeed all must who know of h er and her work- that they have secured a H eadmistresr, nnder wh ose guida n ce S. Mary 's should grow from .strength to strength. Mi ss Field was educated under a gr eat H eadmistress, Miss F. R. Gray, the first High J\l[istress of S. Palll's Girls' School. She then took a degree in Economics (London U ni.versity') and served her n,pprcntice hip as a junior History Mistress under my own fi est He[Ldmistress, Miss H . r~. Powell- the finest t eacher I h a,ve ever known, and a great influence in my life ,- at S. Mary 's College, Lancaster Gate. After five ye::tr s th ere Miss Field went up to Oxford, r en,d History and obtained Second Class Honours in the F inal Schools. For a. time h e wi:is Senior History Mi stress at Kin g Edward' s Sch oo l, Birmingham, and was appoin ted H eadmistress of Trowbridge High School in 1932. She was promoted, in 1939, to the Headship of the Cam bridge and County High School. There she h as don e ::i, great work in building up a fin e school. Miss Field h as alwa,ys been interested in social work. She lived for eight years , while studying and teaching in L ondon, at Dame Uol et House, a centre of social work in Stepney, an d she spent six months in 1920 in relief work in Belgrade. During h er full life in Cn.mbridge she ba,s made t ime to study Divinity and h as this year obt::tined the Archbishop's Diploma in Theology (involving an examation of university honours standard.) It will be seen, therefore, that t he Governors have secured a very highly qualified a,nd experienced Headmistress. Perhaps I may be allowed to quote from her letter of a.pplication: "During my five years in Wiltshire I came to know an d to admire S. Mary 's, and I believe I could fit into it's pattern of living very happily, and perhaps contribute something in keeping with it's aims and ideals."

Ever since I first met Miss Field I have a,dmired h er and her work. It had never occurrnd to me that she might apply for the post h ere, and that sbe bas done so, and has been 路a ppointed, is indeed a cause fo r路 thankfulness. ::>he has great gifts to bring to t h e ser vice of the School. May I take this opportunity of saying how very grateful I have been for all the most kind- in many cases far too kind-letters that have reached me since my resignation was announced ? That my thirty years here have been so exceedingly happy has been very largely due to the kindness and consideration I have met with from the parents of the girls in the School, a kindness and consideration which will, I know, be extended to Miss Field.
