And now when you break -up at the close of this summer term, you are confronted With th'e same ~ apparent tragedry and wuste of . broken fellowship - ns expressed by this hs.unting picture of a broken vase. ,....'f. :t.. 1: We are forced to ae,knowledge ~· the truth of Isaac Watts' familiar words, however unwelcome that truth may be -
Time like an ever-rolling ·str e am Bears all its sins away. They-fly forgotten a.s a d1·eam Dies at the opening day. Of course next September, St. 'Mary's wi.11 wel O()Ete most of you bacl{ after the Summer hol ::l.da.ys , More ·~1ver now facG s v.1 11 then gppear to take the place of those who have loft. 'l1o a detached observer , like myself, your school··life may o.ppea:r c.o nstant and ·u nchanging, like· ·the :L"'each of· a: riv.e r when viewed from the bank.
..
' But this is far from' the case when you yourself are in the school· - and. (as it. were) actually . afloat upon the river itself. Then you become conscious . of hurrying waters, that bear you · forward irresistably, ever onwards and out and away to an unkncwn destiny) · so · that. life s·eems to take · on something . of the appearance of a· ·perpetual farewell . . You wil'l recall Shelley's magic pioture of this contrast of fleetin g shadows against an unchanging backgr ound "Life, like .. a dome of many-coloured g lass Stain·s t h e white radi ance of eternl ty. ''
St. Mary's is always here. You can return to it again and agaip.. But ea.ch year that you do the school w.i ll be different. Indeed "the many coloured glass" of school life mi ght be that of a kaleidoscope. For with its chan ging schol ars a:::-1d m.J.rjt r e ss es a. School t ·akes on a fresh ·and different .Pa-'Gtern w:l.t.h t t .e revolution of ea.ch school year; so that the part i nul e.r q u ~:ll i ty of one year dissolves before nu:- ·regretful ayes" even wl1i le the next is . beginning to fall into shape. You elder girln c~rtalnly will . take my meaning. As you look back you will recognise that each year you have spent here pcssessed unmistakably and quite remarkably, its own 1ndiv1du.al che.ra~ter, and its own pe culiar vintage. Y.o ur life together in es.cl:\. s •: ;hool year is different from any .that has· gone before, or w~'11 f ·ollow after. Then is 1 t not a thousand pities tHa.t the vari&d pattern of ·school life should be achieved so grandly ea:ch .year, only to be broken into fragments and scattered to the four winds of heaven? ·To what purpose is this waste?. Why should thi:s vaae pf fellowship, out of the many into one, which you have cree.ted ih this year of grace 1945, be ·broken irret!i. ievsbly a .few weeks time? 1

Dean Stanley has related how as the Jubilee . of her reign drew near, Queen Victoria longed with a curious insistence for . the Second Coming 6f our Lord. When he enqaired the reason, she replied with tears, 11 0h that I could kneel before Him., · and lay all my kingdoms · at His feet." · Any . offering however precioµs t . Any s.a orifice however: costlyt bEHJomes joy s.nd· gain i .f . only we. feel that we a.re giving it as a per~one.l present to our Lord Jesus -Christ. "She ha.th wrought a go od work ·on Me", the Me.ster.-. declared when Mary broke her box .of spikenard toannoint His .head. And if at the end or· this term you will kneel at His . feet when you must break your school fellowships and as·s ooiations, then ·they will become the lnspiratfo.n for high purp.o se and noble service · wheresoever your· futur.e · lot shall ' be .. cast .• · . ','
I
Some characteristically graceful lines of· William Cowper's on charity might well help your farewells at the end of term:As when a. ship, well freighted with the stor·e s The sun matures on India's spicy shores, .· Has oropt her. anonor, ina r ..oanv:as furled,~=~~-=-==:: In some ·sat'e haven of th.e western world. 'Twere vain enquiry to what port she went, The gale inf.Orms· us laden wi·th. :the scent." .
.
Here at St. Mary' a · you l$de yoµr vessels: withsto~es of knowledge e.nd ·experience. Here too your· characters ripen ·a nd mature beneath the fostering fellowship of school .life. When you must cast off your moorings, and set your course for the . adventures · of public service, God gr.ant that· wherever you shall drop your anchor, you sh,all be known by the wholesome . fruits you bring, and by the .fragrance ot your ·lives as St:. Mary' e ch1ldr&n, faithful to your ideals eve.n .u nto dea.th •

They are a very great help to our records.
We shall send full details of the Reunion to all who signify that there is any chance of the ir being able to be present.
It is sad to think how many of you will be Overseas
or on duty at home, with no chance of accepting, but none of you will be forgotten! Yours affectionately,

SCHOOL,
MARY'S
CAL NE.
Reunion July 27th-30th, 1945 Members of the O.G.A. are invited to a Reunion at the School from tea t~ me on Friday, July 27th, until after breakfast on Monday July 30th. The new Headmist ress, Miss J I. Field, hopes to be present on Saturday. Over 200 members have asked for further particulars of the Reunion so we are hoping for a large attendance. It may be difficult to find beds for all-our normal accommodation is for 150 all told- so members are asked to be very particular in filling up th e form enclosed and to return it, without fail, by the 5th July. No changes should be made after that date except for exceptional reasons. Those attend ing should bring towels, soap, music, tennis racquets, and balls if possible. T he charge will be 4/- for one night or 10/6 for the three nights. No rations need be brought, but numbers expected must be given to the Food Office some considerable time ahead. (No evening dress expected .) Paddington 9.15 Caine 12.10

ST. MARY'S SCHOOL " OLD GIRLS "
Ic.,arewell to Miss Matthews St. Mary's School has rounded off its first summer term since Victoryin-Europe with a big re-union of Old Girls-the first to be held in Calne for seven years. In spite of all th e difficulties, and a lthough past members of the school and staff are scattered all over the world-in the Services and in civilian jobs-and a lthough many found it impossible to leave their home responsibilities, nearly 20f managed to turn up. Many more were bitterly disa ppointed at being unable to get away. It was a double occasion. They came back to Ca ine not only to .renew old friend ships, to inspect all such improvements as the new buildings and playing fields, and to r e-ca pture you thful m emories; they came also to pay tribute-jointly-ff> the achievemen ts of Miss Matthews in guiding the fortunes of the school through two world wars and the difficult years between. During that . time, successive generations have 'ecn the sch ool grow, not only in number s and prosperity, but in a rich tradition of service and idealism . Her resignation, a fter 30 yeaPS, might well have made the week-end a melancholy one. It was bound to be rather a sa d occasion , but Miss )fatthews herself .seemed determ ined to stress t h e con tinuity of the sch ool tr aditi on s, and to hand over to her successor, Miss Field, without regrets . H er 30 years' outst anding se:路vice to the sch ool was recognised by t h e Old Gtrls by t h e presentation of a ch eque for 拢500, the joint eon t ributions of n early 500 members of the Old Girls' Association. A bursary to the school, in Miss Matth ews's n ame, is a lso being endowed jointly by the Governors, friends of the school, and the Old Girls, and it is proposed that a portrait should be presented a nd hung in the school.
The organised part of the weekend opened with a ser vice im the School Hall, tak en by the Bishop of Sh erborne and the Archdellcon of Wiltshire. At this a si:>ecial commemoration was made of the found ers of the school Canon Duncan (Vicar of Caine 1S65-1907), Mrs. Mu rr ay (his moth er-in-law), Miss Ga_briel and Archdeacon Bodington (Vicar !Jf Caine 1907-1927). Tenms and crick et m a tches during t h e :ifternoon were followed by a hurriedly rehear sed entertainment in the e".ening g.iven by past and present girls. This was a reminder to m a n y th at the lightening preparations of su ch entertainments had always been a s much a part of their education as the formal Shakespeare productions seen year a fter year by many people in Caine. On Sunday "the school "-including the young, the middle-aged, and the rather more so-found itself once again trooping to church, with m a n y m emories of walking there in " crocodile " in the various fashions of the school uniform, right back to the straw h ats-or " boards" worn until 1922. The r est of the week-end passed all too quickly. with a concert, other amusements, a nd a great deal of con versation, until on Sundav evening everyone, girls and staff, pa8t and present, except those who had long distan ces to travel and had had t o go early, gathered for what seemed to all a historic occasionthe last tim e that Miss Matthews would take a service in the school chapel,

ddres s by The Bishop of Sherborne July 28, 1945 Reunion. I.
s . -Mary's
School, Calne.
The other day I came across a paragraph fro m an addres s by the Archbishop of Canterbury which seemed to me an appropriate thought (for me) to pass on to you this morning : "If we are to talk of Chr istian education" t h e Archbishop said,
11
we should be clear what the marks of an educated
Christian are.
I would say they a re at l east three -
knowledge, worship, and g race :
knowledge, t h e apprehension
in the mind of t he verities of the Christian Faith;
worship,
t h e approach in the heart to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ;
and g_race, the quality of life which r e sults,
and makes the Christian what he is. 11 Now, do not those 3 marks sum up t h e things for which St. Mary's School has stood in t he experience of many of you. Knowledge - its acquisition in no narrow examination s ens e but the g enerous opportunity of a libe ral education: orship - not merely prescribed acts of devotion at certain times on certai n days but an attitude of heart realities:
attuned to spiritual
and
Grace - the outward expression of the devotion of mind and heart in daily l ife , ma de manifest in ou r r e lations wi th one another and our de aling s with our fellow men .
And I have little doubt that it is because such thing s have really counted with you at St. Ma ry's that, as you gather today as old members of the School, there is put in the very forefront of your programme this simple service of Thanks giving and Prayer, a corporate acknowledgment of GOD - that comes first, and it seems to you all right and natural that it shoul d. I I.
Of cours e t h e secret why we are able thu s to t h ink and s pe ak of t h e school today is that it has been built up on a tru e foundation. When you set out on any enterprise you ought to have a wellthought-out plan, and a good and pleasing desi gn if possible of wh at you seek to achieve, but the most important thing of all is to see your foundation is sound.
That is true of the life of
an individual and of a community alike. desi gn and t h e careful blue-print
1
What use is t h e pleasing
when the rains descend, and
the floods come, and the winds blow' unless the foundation is sound? 11
0ther foundation can no man lay than is laid which is
Jesus Christ." Yes, the foundation here is all ri ght.
And what about the
building upon it? You remember t hat fine chapter in I Corinthians where St. Paul speaks of the Chur ch as the temple of God, rising stone by stone.
I think we may take over t h e metaphor and apply it
to the school.]
3.
The builders bring their contributions, which are themselves, their gifts, t he ir talents, their personalities, their work.
Some bring
~old,
some silver, some stone, some
wood, hay, stubble. Then comes "the day" - and the fire, which shall reveal each one 's work of wha t sort it is.
.
The sound mat erials stand:
t h e wood, hay, stubble is consumed - all shoddy wo r k i s consumed: and those who have put in di shonest , foolish work barely escap e fro m its ruin. Today we thank GOD, not only that the
chool is well and
truly founded , but we t hink of many who have built so we ll on t h at foundation, who have not spared t hemselves but have b rought t heir best - yes , their g old, the standard of exc e l lence - and hav.e he lp ed to make St. Mary's School what it is . Some we have connnemorated by name , for they have passed on and a re no longer with us:
but other s you all will be t hinking
of, remembering them in your hearts with gratitude, and not l east one who is in all our thought s to day. Mi stres ses and s chola rs pass but t he School remains - t he 'building ' wi ll still go on:
each, i n any *a y conne cted with the
Schoo l, has s ome contribut ion t o make .
Succeeding generations
will fi n d "the line s have fallen to t hem in pl easant places and that t hey have a goodl y h eritag e": 'building ' •
and t hey to o must go on
Bernar d Shaw has said t ha t "a gentleman is a. man who t r i e s to tak e out of t he common stock n o more than he puts in 11 • is a ver y us far.
Christia~
That
s entiment, and to bear i t in mind will ca rry
Our Lord s peak s ironically of t hose who "ar e ' called
b ene f actors" and adds "But so shall it not be among you 11 , for t h e class of peop le He con demned mo st surely we r e t hos e who did no thi ng: i v es who l i ved t he li fe of the i dle r ich whi le ot hers at h is door we re i n mi sery;
t he s ervant who hi d his l or d 's money i n a n a pkin ;

And so today, l et noone dare to say be cause of t he s pe c ial circumstances i n all our minds that we are , as ¡it were , meeting under a cloud.
You, who have eyes to see and hearts to

A TRIBUTE FRO M ST. MARY'S SCHOOL. A correspo.n dent from St. Mary's
School, Caine, contributes the following:- The passing of Mr. I'ullein means n owhere a greater break w~th the past than at · St. Mary's School, where h e gave devoted serv;ce for no fewer than 57 years. At the time of his retirement from the staff, some· three years ago, a n old girl of the/school, Anne Wood, well known m the musical world, wrote of him as follows:" During the a7 years of. his attachment to St. U:as·y"\I, M11• ~•in . bu made a most wide and generous contribution to the Sch<~ol's. musical , life. He has taught many, la~ firm and soEd foundations of piano playini;- in children, soma of whom later became professional pihnists, and many more whose careers took other, directions, but to whom an 11.bility to play the piano proved a liie-long joy. A far 'Wider 'circle, however, knew him through his care for the Scllool's hyma l\Ild psalm s'nging, in which fQr some years. he , took weekly school practices. Lastly, by means of his position of organist of Calne Parish Church ..:... the possessor of a fine organ - and of his own musicianly performance11 on the instrument, ~very child who pa'Ssed through the School during the whole long spa,.n of his service, had the priceless gOOd fortune to be. reared, Sunday by Sunday, on much of the finest organ and Church music. It is a very lovely record to have been for so long. a time the mediilm tJiiough which music, with its power to inspire and refresh, has poured into the lives of so many future citizens." Mr. Pull~n's · name will always be held ill honour at the school he served so long and so fa.ithfully. One of the music rooms, - ·au named aiter famous musicians~ bears his name and there hangs his porh:ait. The music which, 30 years ago, he composed for the School Hymn· will forever be a reminder of his work for St. Mary's At his funeral tire School was represented by l\liss Matthews (late Headmistress) Miss Alexander (late Senior Mistress), Miss. Thouless, ~liss Williams, Miss Jackson (representing the present staff), C. Fforde and J . Parsons (heed girls) and Miss Beale and Miss Hort representing the Old Girls' Association) .

MR. w. R. PULLEIN

SIR, - Your correspondent, who wrote an account of Mr. Pullein and his work ru organist of Oalne Parish . Church. omitted any mention of a presentation to him made when he had completed forty years in CaJne. If yon "ill look UJ'} your files you wi.ll see that this was made after a memorable performa.n.c-e, by tbe Caine l[usical Society, of "The ~foldPn Legend." PerhaPS I may t,e allowed to quote the inscription in the album-aR inscription written by Archdeacon Bodington w'ho, in making tbe presentation, did llot consider it necessary to make anything m the nature of a sveech; he contented 'himself by reading the inscription "-hich, as your r ep<»:ter wrote at the time, "c.'Om-eyecl eveuthing that cou:ld be said." It W"as, 11ollow : "To " ·· R. Pullein, ES'!. The cheque for 212 guineas which ac.comJ)anie~ this litble book, iu which are , inbcribed the names of those who offer it in grateful and aifeetionate remembrance of 4-0 vears of devoted self-sacrificillj:( sen-ice as organi t and .chorimaster in the Calne Pari h Church, as conductor of the. Caine ll:u;;ical Society, as teacher of tbe schools, and of many others in the town and neighbourhood, and as musical scholar and ce>mposer, in which capacities he ha.s inspired and ele,·ated in musical appreciation as 'rnll as charmed, not only the church and town of Caine, but to some extent the whole of this side of thP country, is presented hy feHow Church. peopl e, townspeople, pup1ls, lovers of music and frien ds, with the earnest hope and wiSh that he may be spared to be with us for many more Years to come." It is pPrhaPS fitting. that this presentation should be recalled at this time, while the inscription, ·written in ·o beautiful a style by Archdeacon BC>dington, is well \vorth uresenration. - E. THE LATE MR. PULLEIN A correspondent wJ<ites :-When such a great and competent p~rFon颅 a!it:v as the late W. R. Pullein has to b~ described, presumably, it is impossible to say all that could be said; there being so much to tell. Among all the excellent comments on him, no mention bas been made of his own, original musical com .>ositions, which are by some people so belo,路ed. His first, to "0 Jesus. I have promised 'I'o serve 'l'hee to th~ end." was written at the unusually early age of twelve years. "\Vhen that great scholar, Dean A. E. Burn, Doctor qf Literature, Doctor of Di,init~-. etc .. heard Mr. Pullein's composition, "Salisbury," he said that the tune was far too noble for the hymn (A. & JU. 234), and he himself composed three verses for the magnificent 路 music, beginning, '~O Praise the Lord with heart and voice. Let hallowed arches I路ing. . . ." Mr. Pullein's setting to the Sixteenth Century prayer, "0 Lord, support us all the day long of this troublous life," was broadcast regularlv by the B.B.C. at the late night-servi_ce. Perhaps the most speaking of Calne's late organist's works is his tune to ~ "Lead, kindly light"; but great favom~tes are that dedicated to his only son, " 0 Lorn that wilt not let me go "; ' and the one inscribed to the Venerable Archdeacon Bodinl!ton. to Whittier's words "At Last," beginning. " When on my da:v of life the night is falling."

fourth programme in the series West Country Composers--on Tuesday at 7.40 p.m.-will be devoted to the music of Christopher le Fleming, who, as director of the Wiltshire Rural Music School, has done so much to stimulate interest in music in that county. The chief item will be a song cycle for soprano voice, string quartet and piano called 'Earth and Air,' with words by Walter de la Mare. The soloist will be Rose Morse. The choir of St. Mary's School, Caine, will sing a setting of Rupert Brooke's poem ' Day that I have loved.' The composer himself will be in the studio to direct the performance and to accompany the songs.
