STEM10 To be successful in this course you need to: • have an interest in scientific theory and research • be able to work independently • use a variety of laboratory techniques and equipment safely. In this course you will: • develop learning skills and dispositions/ways of thinking essential for the development of self-directed, self-managing, life-long learners in the 21st century. These include: • planning, negotiating, communicating, problem-solving and decision making • making connections, application and transfer of knowledge and skills • preparedness to take risks and accept challenge • critical and reflective thinking, seeking deep understanding • working autonomously, working collaboratively and engaging with others in the learning process • global awareness, social responsibility and working ethically. Class activities will be negotiated with the teacher based on the interest areas of the class, but could include: • working either individually or in a small group on smaller and extended projects involving science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for potential entry in CSIRO CREST or BHP Billiton Science Awards • learning topics from the field of science not included in the Australian Curriculum e.g., astrophysics, neurology, meteorology or the chemistry of cosmetics • Completing entries in science competitions, for example the Titration competition or Junior Youth Physics Tournament. This course could lead to: • senior secondary studies in the field of Science, including Physical Sciences, Environmental Science, Life Sciences and Biology. • tertiary study in Science.
