ANNUAL REPORT ST. MARY’S – 20 Years of Milestones

2013-14 ANNUAL REPORT

DEAR COMMUNITY MEMBERS, St. Mary’s School’s extraordinary 20-year trajectory is no accident. From the vibrant incarnation of Founder Father Sillers’ vision – to create “a school strong in academic and moral development, with an emphasis on values” – to the IBinspired curriculum and global philosophy that permeate the school today, St. Mary’s School never stops advancing. Thanks, in no small measure, to you. It has been the steady dedication and generosity of our parents, faculty, administrators, alumni parents, grandparents, corporations, foundations and friends which has delivered us here. The 2013-2014 school year, a milestone in our history, is no different. The 2013-2014 Annual Fund generated over $565,000, and combined with other fundraising efforts (Gala, Fund-A-Need, and Golf Classic) brings our total philanthropic gifts to $1,105,590. Your gifts – this year, and since the beginning – have made it possible for St. Mary’s School to grow as an institution, devoted to its mission. These gifts add critical resources necessary to enhance the student experience, and help us sustain our exceptional academic programs, faculty and facilities. During the 2013-2014 school year, your dollars enabled us to improve classroom technology, underwrite faculty development programs, purchase new and innovative art resources, upgrade athletic facilities and, most importantly, enrich the educational life of every St. Mary’s student. Our gratitude for your gifts is beyond words; we recognize, daily, the connection between your steadfast financial support and the vitality of our academic environment. We also count as blessings the substantial amounts of time and talent devoted to our school by trustees, parents and alumni volunteers. This level of charity within our own community is, again, a manifestation of mission. As we look forward to our next twenty years, we will continue to invest our resources with progress in mind, while remaining true to our founding vision. Thank you for helping to build a lasting legacy here at St. Mary’s School. We are proud to serve such a wonderful community. Sincerely,

Sharon Taylor Head of School

ANNUAL FUND ANNUAL FUND with Gratitude

Every fundraising endeavor at

St. Mary’s School has, at its core, a shared objective: to enhance the educational experience for our students. The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our efforts. Gifts to the Annual Fund allow us to reach beyond the school’s general operating budget and build mission-driven innovation, year by year, into St. Mary’s learning. With tuition, we can confidently provide superior education steeped in Christian values to our student body. But it is community largesse – through the Annual Fund – that allows us to thrive.

2013-14 ANNUAL REPORT

The success of our 2013-2014 Annual Fund is on full display, campus-wide. Here are just a few examples of your gifts in action: STEM curriculum, vastly expanded… 4 Purchased 62 new iPads and software allowing first graders to take virtual journeys across the country and tour landmarks coast to coast. 4 Introduced new Middle School technology electives, encouraging greater focus in areas such as stop-motion animation and computer construction. 4 EEP classrooms received two additional white boards, greatly enhancing math instruction. A larger palette, for the ARTS… 4 Added four outdoor easels to the Early Education Program, allowing our youngest artists to gather inspiration through nature. 4 Purchased 12 musical keyboards and 22 guitars for the Lower and Middle School Music Department. Students now learn to read music while acquiring basic skills, optimizing brain function frequently associated with early instrument instruction. 4 A highly coveted theater program was added to the Middle School curriculum, which integrates all aspects of theatrical production. Classroom Enhancements and Student Enrichment… 4 Early Preschool classrooms were fitted with natural, eco-friendly furniture in toddler sizes. In addition, preschool students received a SMART table to play with – interactively – with shapes and sizes. 4 Instructional Aides were hired for all Lower School classrooms, enabling head teachers to provide more small group and one-on-one instruction. Health, Wellness, and Athletics… 4 Incorporated Velocity Sports Performance training into our Lower and Middle School athletic program. 4 Integrated new tools and games from Project Adventure into the P.E. program.

GOLF CLASSIC GOLF CLASSIC Linking Together

St. Mary’s parents and community leaders enjoyed a great day of golf at the 16th Annual St. Mary’s Golf Classic at El Niguel Country Club on September 16, 2013. Co-Chairs Greg and Cindy Newman, parents of two St. Mary’s students, noted, “because St. Mary’s helps students prepare for lives of purpose in the global community, the event theme, Around the World in 18 Holes, was a natural. Each hole represented a different country, complete with volunteers dressed in native attire with colorfully decorated international food and beverage stations to serve golfers.” Proceeds of the event were used to refurbish the St. Mary’s Gymnasium to complete the year-long athletic facilities improvement program.

GALA

Celebrating OUR School

ST. MARY’S ROARING 20TH ANNIVERSARY GALA

On March 22, 2014, the St. Mary’s community came together for the Roaring 20th Anniversary Gala. It was a truly wonderful evening of fellowship, fun, and fundraising in celebration of St. Mary’s School’s 20 year history! Under the leadership of the Gala Co-Chairs, Tami Wingate and Claudia Kechejian and the entire Gala Committee, the evening was a tremendous success on all fronts, including the goal of raising funds for our school’s programs. In addition to the silent and live auction portions of the evening, we also held a Fund-A Need specifically earmarked to further develop the St. Mary’s STEM Program. In a matter of ten minutes our generous community raised over $121,000 to support the STEM Program. These gifts, combined with other funds raised at the Gala, produced a grand total of $223,000 net. In addition, we had over $50,000 worth of in-kind donations which helped to offset the expenses of the event. St. Mary’s strong and supportive community has set the stage to move the school into the next 20 years!

Every St. Mary’s student in every grade is benefitting this year from new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) enhancements made possible by generous donations at the spring gala. Of the $220,000 in net proceeds from the 20th annual gala in March, $120,000 was specifically earmarked to expand our STEM initiatives, keeping St. Mary’s on the leading edge of technology. Our successful fundraising allowed us to check off every item on our lengthy wish list in the following areas: Robotics and Programming Hands-on robotics and programming instruction now begins in kindergarten. Over the summer, we purchased ageappropriate programmable robotic devices for our younger students — Bee-Bots for Grades K-1 and
