DEAR St. Mary’s Community
As we reflect on the 2023-2024 school year, we are filled with deep gratitude and excitement for all that our community has accomplished together. It is with great pride that we present this comprehensive Report on Philanthropy, showcasing the tremendous impact of our supporters’ generosity and dedication across every corner of our school.
It’s clear that St. Mary’s is a place where people love to come together—whether in the classroom, on the field, in the gym, or at one of the many events on or off campus. Last year, we had hundreds of volunteer opportunities, and once again, our community showed up with enthusiasm and care. We are incredibly thankful that St. Mary’s feels like home for so many.
In this report, you’ll find a detailed financial overview of the funds raised, allocated, and utilized for vital philanthropic causes. Your support enabled us to reach an extraordinary $7,038,000 in pledges and donations. Our current Capital Campaign— Design The Future—is a transformative project that will leave a lasting mark on our school for generations. We are excited to continue partnering with you to bring this vision to life. Our St. Mary’s Fund and Scholar Program remain pillars of who we are, reflecting the heart of our mission. We cannot thank you enough for your generosity.
We believe in the power of philanthropy to change lives—impacting not only our students but also a world in need. As you explore this report, we hope you feel inspired by the initiatives we’ve undertaken together. Each contribution reflects our mission, vision and values, and it is what makes St. Mary’s truly one-of-a-kind.
We are deeply grateful for the partnership we share with you. The success of our school is built on the time, resources, and talent contributed by so many in our community.
On behalf of everyone at St. Mary’s, we proudly present this report and deeply value the connection we have with all of you.
Warmly,
Doug Patterson

Message From The Campaign Committee
Dear St. Mary’s Community,
We are thrilled to share an exciting milestone in our school’s journey—this summer, we broke ground on the Design The Future project, marking the start of a transformative new chapter for St. Mary’s. After years of careful planning and the incredible support of our community, we are now seeing our vision for innovative learning spaces, revamped community and outdoor areas, and a new home for our Early Education Program come to life.
In the pages that follow, you’ll find highlights of the campaign’s progress, a timeline of key milestones, and a celebration of the generous donors who have brought us this far. Thanks to more than 70 families contributing $12 million, we are on the path to elevating the educational experience for current and future generations of St. Mary’s students. These families are not just donors—they are partners in shaping the future of education here.
As we enter the final phase of this campaign, we invite all community members to join us in reaching our goal. Together, we will build a space that not only reflects the excellence of St. Mary’s, but also enhances our IB and Design Thinking curriculum—creating a hub where students can become innovators and critical thinkers.
Thank you to those who have led the way and to those who will help bring this project to completion. If you would like to participate, we would be glad to meet with you, along with our dedicated school leadership, to connect you with the right opportunities to get involved.
Sincerely,

Inspiring Innovation in the Idea Lab
The future of education is rapidly evolving, and Manna Kadar and Sohrab Tavakoli are committed to ensuring that students at St. Mary’s are equipped to thrive in this changing landscape. Through their generous support, the Tavakoli Kadar Idea Lab will soon become an idea generation hub in the soon-to-be Design Center on the second floor of the new building.
As entrepreneurs, Manna and Sohrab understand the transformative power of education and technology. Reflecting on her journey, Manna shared, “Education was my key to success and continues to be. I see the Idea Lab as a bridge to the future of learning—one that will empower children to think critically, use technology creatively and learn in ways we couldn’t have imagined growing up.”

A Space for Curiosity and Creativity
The Idea Lab will be a tech-filled classroom, designed to inspire students to explore technology hands-on. From artificial intelligence to cutting-edge tools, this space will encourage students to take their learning beyond the classroom.
For Sohrab, the Idea Lab represents an exciting shift in how students approach learning. “There’s a science to curiosity,” he explained. “In the past, learning could be a slow and rigid process. Today, with technology at our fingertips, we can ask questions, use tools like AI and discover faster ways to solve problems. This lab will teach students not just to find the answer, but to ask the right questions—the critical thinking we often find lacking in the business world.”
The Idea Lab will serve as a place where curiosity is cultivated, where students will learn to ask “why” and explore new ways to answer that question. Manna and Sohrab are particularly excited about how the lab will teach children to engage with generative AI, an emerging field that will be integrated into the curriculum to help students explore topics more deeply and efficiently. “We want our children, and all the students here, to learn how to think critically and engage with the tools of the future,” Sohrab said. “This space is about more than learning facts; it’s about teaching them how to think and how to use their voice confidently.”

Empowering the Next Generation of Problem Solvers
As entrepreneurs, Manna and Sohrab are professional problem solvers, a mindset they want to instill in their children Shaelyn (Grade 3) and Mason (Grade 1). “In business, we move forward by solving problems,” Manna noted. “It’s the same in life— if mom and dad aren’t around, how will they figure things out on their own? The Idea Lab will give them a space to practice problem-solving, to ask questions and to collaborate with others to find solutions.”
The lab will feature a wall for idea generation, where students can share and build upon one another’s thoughts. “We love that this space promotes collaboration and recognizes that every idea matters,” said Sohrab. “That’s the foundation of innovation—starting with ideas and turning them into action.”
A Lasting Legacy of Learning and Creativity
For the Tavakoli Kadar family, supporting the Idea Lab is about more than just leaving a legacy for Shaelyn and Mason. “We want every child at St. Mary’s to feel confident sharing their ideas, their thoughts, and their emotions,” Manna emphasized. “This lab will be a safe space where they can explore without fear and learn how to turn their ideas into solutions to real-world problems.”

THANK YOU CLASS OF 2024
At St. Mary’s School, the tradition of the graduating class contributing a collective gift to the Scholar Program is a powerful way for families to leave a lasting legacy. The Class of 2024 has proudly raised $37,975, setting an inspiring example for future classes. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the families who participated in this tradition, helping to ensure that the Scholar Program continues to thrive.
SIX Scholars Enrolled 2024-25
Your support played a vital role in this success, and we sincerely thank you for your contribution!
The Scholar Program students had an outstanding year, actively participating in school activities and trips, showcasing their talents, and excelling both academically and athletically. The students from Grades 6 to 8 engaged in various school sports, including basketball, volleyball, soccer and track. All attended Field Studies to Catalina, Yosemite and Washington, D.C., with several also joining special Intersession trips to London and Silicon Valley. These Falcons served in leadership roles, such as being recognized as standout participants on trips or serving as St. Mary’s Ambassadors. As these students continue to thrive at St. Mary’s, they are prepared for when they graduate and move on to high school. We are proud to have two St. Mary’s scholars attending local high schools and are happy to hear about their successes.
“ For our child, the opportunity of going to a safe school with a high academic level, outstanding principles and values, caring people, and travel opportunities was incredible. These are things that we would have never been able to provide ourselves.” — Current Scholar Family
“ We are indebted to all of you for this great opportunity. We ask God to forever bless you and your families, to guide you, and to keep you.” — Current Scholar Family
2023-2024 Scholar Students
Thriving
Supporting Our Local Community
The St. Mary’s Scholar Program was established in 2018 through the dedicated efforts of our school leaders, Walt Linaweaver and Sharon Taylor, alongside the generous contributions of families and the invaluable partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley. Leaders from the Boys and Girls Club—James Littlejohn, Nicole Watson, Carolyn Kozol, Summer Mejia, and Daniela Burgos—along with our Scholar Program Committee members, played a pivotal role in welcoming our first scholars to St. Mary’s in the 2019-2020 school year. Since then, we have continued to strengthen our collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club in selecting students to apply for the Scholar Program each year.
St. Mary’s and the Aliso Viejo branch of the Boys and Girls Club have expanded this partnership beyond the selection of scholar students to support more children in our community. Over the past three years, we have provided an annual average of $600 in school materials, art supplies and games at the start of each school year to the club. These donations have positively impacted the services the club provides to its members. Additionally, St. Mary’s has welcomed students from the club for art and PE classes, outdoor activities and sports camps. Over the past two years, Boys and Girls Club students have also attended our spring musical production. We are excited to continue increasing opportunities for our faculty and students to work with students from the Boys and Girls Club.
The 2024 Gala Fund-a-Need supported Making Innovators —a campaign created to provide our students with the tools, resources, and inspiration for a truly transformative learning experience. Our academic leadership identified specific resources that drive innovation and design thinking, offering hands-on, meaningful and tangible benefits to Falcons of all ages. Through this initiative, we are funding programs in coding and robotics, digital fabrication, virtual and augmented reality, and digital citizenship, equipping our students with the skills needed to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
This Fund-a-Need brings design thinking to life through investments in coding and robotics, digital fabrication, virtual and augmented reality, and digital citizenship—ensuring our students gain the tools and skills to navigate an ever-changing landscape. Together, we are empowering the innovators of tomorrow.
At the Gala, we raised an incredible $212,000 for this Fund-a-Need! We are deeply grateful to our families for supporting the FAN, which is bringing exciting new resources to all grade levels. On the following pages are a few examples of the programs enhanced or introduced into our curriculum this year, thanks to our generous support.
Innovation for our Youngest Falcons in EEP
Innovation for our youngest Falcons drives the exciting enhancements in our EEP Program. Every class will benefit from the new resources, and the teachers are eager to integrate them into learning experiences. Our Outdoor Classroom now features Jumbo Building Blocks, which the children love using for creative play and construction. Early Preschool is developing a hands-on unit on light and shadows, incorporating state-of-the-art light tables, materials, and safe loose parts to encourage design thinking and endless exploration for our little creators. Additionally, Preschool classrooms will enhance their “How the World Works Unit of Inquiry - Measurements” with new materials, including beakers, measuring wheels and glass crayons. Early Kindergarten is excited about their new OSMO coding devices, magnetic blocks and the Makedo Invent Kit, which will play a key role in supporting their “How the World Works Unit of Inquiry – Tinkering “ unit. These upgrades are a significant boost for our youngest learners!
AR/VR via Merge Cube in Grades K-5
We are excited to introduce Merge Cube into our Lower School Science curriculum as part of our ongoing innovation initiatives. This powerful AR/VR tool allows students to hold and interact with 3D objects using augmented reality, bringing abstract scientific concepts to life in an immersive way. By aligning the Merge Cube with our units of study and the IB Program of Inquiry, we’re enhancing the learning experience through interactive, hands-on exploration. Whether students are examining the solar system, human anatomy, or ecosystems, Merge Cube helps bridge the gap between theory and tangible understanding, deepening their curiosity and comprehension. This new technology fosters inquiry-based learning, aligning perfectly with our commitment to providing engaging, forward-thinking educational experiences for our students.
Social Institute in Grades 3-8
In light of the growing research on the negative effects of screen time and social media on young minds, teaching responsible digital navigation is more important than ever. St. Mary’s is proud to partner with The Social Institute to address this need. This gamified learning platform empowers students, educators, and families with the tools and skills to navigate their social world—both online and offline—in healthy and responsible ways. With lessons designed to promote high-character decisionmaking, we’ve integrated this program into our curriculum by mapping lessons to key units in the Lower School and rolling it out through advisory sessions in Middle School. This week, we successfully completed our first lesson in the Middle School, and we look forward to the program’s positive impact on our students.
LEGO Robotics Team for Grades 4-8
We are excited to launch the inaugural year of our LEGO Robotics Team for students in Grades 4-8, offering a hands-on introduction to STEM through robotics. Using LEGO robotics kits, students will design, build, and program robots to tackle real-world challenges, promoting critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. This new initiative empowers students to explore coding, engineering, and robotics principles in an engaging and practical way. Whether participating in competitions or classroom projects, the LEGO Robotics Team will provide an exciting platform for students to innovate, experiment, and bring their creations to life.
Digital Embroidery Machine for Grades 6-8
As part of our commitment to fostering creativity and innovation, we’ve introduced a digital embroidery machine into our Middle School design course. This cutting-edge tool allows students to transform their digital designs into unique, tangible works of art, blending technology with traditional craftsmanship. By using the machine to create embroidered pieces, students gain hands-on experience in translating digital concepts into physical representations, encouraging both creative expression and technical skill development. This new addition empowers students to explore the intersection of design, technology, and artistry, providing them with a modern platform to experiment, innovate, and showcase their creativity in real-world applications.
3D Printers
Expanding our fleet, we’re excited to introduce the newest 3D printers, which enable students to bring their creative designs and projects to life. These high-fidelity printers allow for the production of product prototypes, classroom teaching models, demonstrations, and custom-designed, in-house fabricated learning resources. Supporting all divisions at St. Mary’s, the 3D printers play a crucial role in seeding the adoption of digital fabrication and hands-on learning across the curriculum. From intricate student creations to functional classroom tools, this technology empowers students and teachers alike to explore innovative solutions and bring their ideas into the physical world, fostering creativity and deeper engagement in STEM and beyond.
