This fun filled line-up is taught with a hands-on approach by St. Mary’s Early Education instructors! These creative programs peak students natural curiosity. Students may enroll in workshops independent of camp/school or an add-on to any summer resort program.

Cooking Jump start to Spanish! Get ready for a theatrical, active, and hands-on experience featuring stories, games, and songs from different countries all around the Spanish-speaking world! This amazing enrichment cooking class offers a unique culinary experience to children in a safe environment that encourages discovery and creativity. Day Camp

St. Mary’s Resort Day Camp offers activities, such as art, music, science and sports in conjunction with field trips and BBQ Fridays. Camp fosters childrens’ emotional, social, physical and creative growth through a range of interactive activities and relationships with role model counselors. Kindergarten to Grade 5 Day Camp

GRADES K-5

The St. Mary’s Kindergarten to Grade 5 Day Camp features a number of fun activities and trips filled with enrichment and entertainment. Students have the opportunity to relax, hang out with friends and participate in exciting activities as they unwind and enjoy their summer days. The day camp program takes every opportunity to not only make the day enjoyable for your child, but weaves community service and service learning. Philanthropic projects in the form of communitybased service learning helps to instill in students a sense of connectedness to others through selfless acts. Philanthropic projects such as making lunch for a homeless shelter and Doheny State Beach clean up, helps campers see the world outside of themselves and starts the journey as advocates for change and social responsibility. The St. Mary’s Summer Resort day camp offers fun, educational and philanthropic activities that are sure to enrich your child’s summer and create lasting memories for years to come.

Weekly Activities Monday:

Dress up day! Students come dressed in themes such as sports dress, Hawaiian, safari and 50’s fun with contests for the best themed costume.

Tuesday:

Bring your swimsuits on Tuesdays and cool off with summer water activities such as water bounce houses water relays, fire bucket brigade, balloon toss and many more games to splash and play.

Wednesday:

Students should wear their Summer Resort T-shirt every Wednesday for afternoon off-campus field trips to Boomers, beach-clean up, Laser Quest, Big Air Trampoline, Aquarium of the Pacific and movies.

Thursday:

Baseball, Pillow Polo tournaments, snow cone making and much more!

Friday:

BBQ lunch, clubs and a movie.

Dates: 5 Week Session – June 23 - July 25 Time: 9 am - 12 noon • Cost: $710

Kindergarten Prep Through hands-on, engaging literacy centers, incoming Kindergarten students will reinforce their knowledge of letters and sounds, participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups, and sharpen their comprehension skills during daily reading activities. Through the use of Handwriting Without Tears, incoming Kindergarten students will practice proper letter formation while having the opportunity to write and illustrate creative stories. The 6 + 1 Traits of Writing will be introduced and reinforced throughout the session. Incoming Kindergarten students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers, focusing on counting and writing numbers, number concepts, patterning, graphing and story problems. Everyday Math concepts will be reviewed during the lessons.

Grade 1 Prep

K- 5 ACADEMIC PREP

Incoming Grade 1 students will participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups focused on increasing decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills. Students will build their sight word vocabulary with daily practice, review, and reinforcement. Students will practice appropriate letter formation through the use of Handwriting Without Tears. During the Writer’s Workshop, students will have the opportunity to explore and create various types of writing including poetry, friendly letters, and creative stories. In addition, students will learn vital grammar skills to strengthen their writing. Students will be encouraged to share their writing with the class and strengthen public speaking skills. During math, students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers to reinforce and build upon their growing knowledge of math concepts. Students will explore addition and subtraction, patterns, measurement, time, and money. Technology will be consistently integrated to help differentiate and enhance students’ ability levels in reading, writing, and math.

Grade 2 Prep Incoming Grade 2 students will enjoy a variety of opportunities to read, and be read to while engaging in hands-on literacy centers. Students will also participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups to build their sight word vocabulary, increase word solving skills and fluency, in addition to sharpen their comprehension skills at their individual instructional level. St. Mary’s proudly uses Fountas and Pinnell’s literacy program. Through the use of Handwriting Without Tears, incoming Grade 2 students will continue to practice proper letter formation. During the Writer’s Workshop, students will have the opportunity to compose, revise, illustrate and share their individual, original stories. The 6 + 1 Traits of Writing will be reinforced through daily mini-lessons. Incoming second grade students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers, focusing on the automaticity of basic addition and subtraction facts, real world word problems, time, and money. Students will work at their individual levels, while interacting with others through instructional games and centers. Everyday Math concepts will be reviewed during the lessons.

Grade 3 Prep Grade 3 summer reading will focus on small differentiated guided reading groups, concentrating on developing individual skills and strategies to improve comprehension, fluency and inference. Students will additionally read a class novel to explore the elements of character, setting and plot and further expand their vocabulary, prediction and summarizing skills. Students will experience different genres including poetry, plays, fiction and non-fiction. The writing program will stimulate the student’s imagination and develop their organization, sentence fluency and word choice through the 6 + 1 writing program. Students will be taught how to include sensory details, incorporate exciting word choice and give their writing great voice. Conventional grammar will be taught with the rules of punctuation and verb tense, in addition to high frequency words and cursive handwriting. Within the math program students will be taught differentiated mathematical concepts with addition, subtraction, multiplication, measurement, geometry, place value, fractions and more through the Everyday Mathematics program. These concepts will be reinforced through interactive and cooperative math games and manipulatives. The Building Math Fluency Program will be taught to reinforce computation strategies and improve automaticity in addition, subtraction and multiplication.

Grade 4 Prep For our reading curriculum, incoming fourth grade students will participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups. Students will learn critical reading strategies that will increase skills in comprehension, accuracy, and fluency at their individual instructional level. As a class, we will discuss character development, sequence of events, and vocabulary as we read a summer novel. In writing, the students will have the opportunity to awaken their creative juices, sharpen their writing skills, and explore the writing process using the 6+1 writing traits and Lucy Calkins writing program. Students will also develop an understanding of the structure of a paragraph, including topic and closing sentences. Using their senses and descriptive adjectives, students will produce poems, personal narratives, and persuasive essays. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their writing with the teacher, as well as share with their peers. During math, students will engage in differentiated math activities using math manipulatives and interactive games. They will focus on automaticity of basic math facts, place value, fractions, exponents, equations and variables. They will build on their already growing knowledge of multiplication and division. Everyday Math concepts will be reviewed, reinforced, and introduced during the lessons. The students will also become familiar with the Everyday Math website.

Grade 5 Prep Incoming fifth grade students will participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups to meet them at their individual instructional levels. Students will practice reading strategies that will increase skills in comprehension, accuracy, and fluency. As they read a class novel, the children will discuss character development, sequence of events, and vocabulary. Students will have the opportunity to awaken their creative juices, sharpen their writing skills, and explore the writing process using the 6+1 writing traits. They will cultivate their ideas, voice, sentence fluency, organization, word choice, and conventions as they craft narrative, “I Come from Poems” and expository pieces, a camp newspaper. They will reflect on their writing with the teacher and their peers. Students will engage in differentiated math activities using manipulatives and interactive games from the Everyday Math series. They will focus on automaticity of basic math facts and place value. In addition, they will build on their understanding of multiplication and division by using a variety of strategies and algorithms to solve large number equations. Finally, partial numbers will be explored as the children work with fractions, decimals, and percents.


GRADES 6-8 (MIDDLE SCHOOL)

Academic Prep

Middle School students should select the appropriate math class based upon their math level for the next school year. Language A (Reading and Writing) class placement will be done according to grade level.

Math Prep, Grade 6 This year, summer school Grade 6 Math will be a five week program for incoming 6th grade students who have tested into the course. During this five week span, students will become familiar with some of the major 6th grade math concepts in order to ready themselves for the upcoming school year. Students will be reviewing concepts from previous courses and will be introduced to concepts including order of operations and exponents, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing mixed number fractions, converting improper fractions to mixed number fractions, dividing decimals, converting fractions to decimals, fraction/decimal/ percent conversions, scale drawings, one and two step equations, and area and circumference of circles.

Pre-Algebra Prep, Grades 6-7 This year, summer school Pre-Algebra Prep will be a five week program for incoming 6th/7th grade Pre-Algebra students who have tested into the course. During this five week span, students will become familiar with some of the major Pre-Algebra concepts in order to ready themselves for the upcoming school year. Students will be reviewing concepts from previous courses and will be introduced to concepts including integers and absolute value, adding and subtracting integers, multiplying and dividing integers, mixed number fractions, combining like terms, estimating square roots, Pythagorean Theorem, converting repeating decimals to fractions, one and two step equations, and surface area of prisms.

Language A Prep (Reading and Writing), Grades 6-8 Students coming in to grade six will read one novel together this summer. We will annotate the book, and maintain a journal, in which we analyze plot, setting, characters and themes, using quotes from the text to support claims. Students will build on their knowledge of the six traits, to write short responseto-literature essays. Students will also spend time writing an “isearch” paper, a research report on a subject of their own choosing. The MLA format, used throughout Middle School, will be reviewed and reinforced. This course provides excellent preparation and reinforcement for the rigorous reading and writing requirements at St. Mary’s. Students coming in to grades seven or eight will read short fiction together this summer. We will annotate the text, and maintain a journal, in which we analyze characterization, setting, mood and themes, using quotes from the text to support claims, and identifying author’s purpose and use of figurative language such as metaphor, simile and personification. Students will write short response-to-literature essays. Students will also spend time writing an “isearch” paper, a research report on a subject of their own choosing. Algebra Prep, Grades 7-8 6-8 ACADEMIC PREP

This year, summer school Algebra Prep will be a five week program for incoming 7th/8th grade algebra students who have tested into the course. During this five week span, students will become familiar with some of the major algebraic concepts in order to ready themselves for the upcoming school year. Students will be reviewing concepts from previous courses and will be introduced to concepts including exponents, order of operations, simplifying expressions and combining like terms, solving one, two and multistep equations, the distributive property, inequalities, relations and functions, and evaluating algebraic expressions.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Grades K-8 Welcome! Give and Receive God’s Great Love! Scripture is filled with stories of hospitality. From Abraham and Sarah, who welcomed three strangers and prepared a meal for them; to Luke and Paul, who accepted generosity when shipwrecked on the island of Malta. Welcome! Give and Receive God’s Great Love invites children to discover God’s amazing love through the stories of God’s people. They demonstrated kindness, made friends, and took care of those who were hurt. They reflected the love of a God who welcomes and cares for each of us.

Grades 1-3 Come join us for a fun week of singing, food, games, and crafts in Spanish! Learn basic vocabulary and concepts of beginning level español through play and hands-on activities. This introduction to Spanish is an easy, fun way to try out Spanish for the first time or get a head start on your new Spanish classes you’ll be taking in the fall! Parents will join us on Friday for a special “fiesta” celebration planned and presented by the students. Grades 4-8 Learn new words in Spanish and review basic concepts of this beautiful language as we explore the culture and diversity of Spanish-speaking countries. We will end our advernture with “una fiesta,” a special party planned by students that you won’t want to miss.

Students will follow their own small group leader to delve into the lesson by participating in the following activities: Bible story time, Crafts , Discovery time, Recreation plus much more. At the end of each day the entire VBS will gather together to participate in a closing assembly.

Grade 4-8 Come learn basic Chinese greetings, numbers, days of the week, colors, food, and much more in this Chinese immersion camp. Students will learn Chinese through hands-on activities, crafts, songs, and games. We will also practice daily conversation. Join the fun in learning the most spoken language in the world.

Students will learn the basics of the French language, such as colors, numbers, alphabet, food, animals, and greetings. They will do so in a fun environment by playing games, singing, coloring and skits! Voila!

Advanced Computer Hardware, Grades 4-8 Students will explore concepts in computer hardware. They will learn how computers function from a hardware perspective, disassembling systems to learn how parts connect as well as building new systems from scratch. They will learn networking basics such as how networks functions, assembling a network cable, basic domain usage, and file sharing within a network. Additionally, students will explore the concept of an operating system comparing current popular solutions, GUI basics, as well as how to install an operating system cleanly. Lastly, students will be introduced to the concept of scripting, or creating files that execute automatics tasks.

Forensics, Grades 1-3 Does your child like to solve mysteries?

CSI: Forensics involves just that. Students will be engaged in different crime scene investigations during this one-week course. Students will get a taste of what it is like to be a forensic scientist as they explore different aspects of solving mysteries. Students will become families with using various tools to aide their investigations, such as traditional and digital microscopes. This class is designed so students will graduate with the knowledge of knowing how to apply the scientific method. Parents are invited to attend a special presentation of crime scene investigations on Friday at 3 pm.

Students will focus upon the art of animation and the creation of a series of cartoon cels in this week-long workshop involving mixed media. They will view original “Popeye” cartoon cels and will be given the opportunity to invent original characters or to reinvent popular animated characters. Each cel will represent a three-step process – a base drawing, acrylic painting of that drawing and a creation of a suitable background to accompany the painted cel.

In addition, students will discover the works of contemporary artist Roy Lichtenstein and will create large paintings inspired by his Pop Art style which was influenced by comic books and popular advertising.

Conduct experiments to test the air that you breathe every day for pollutants. Find out what pollutes drinking water and how it can be made safe again following pollution. Conduct experiments on the chemicals and organisms that make water unsafe to drink and conduct experiments on its purification. Learn the causes and effects of water pollution. Learn about pH, water hardness, chlorides, phosphates, and dissolved oxygen. The course includes a Field Day to Aliso Creek . In Readers’ Theatre students will act out plays as they read directly from their scripts without the stress of memorizing lines. Readers’ Theatre is effective in building reading fluency. This class will explore groundwater contamination by constructing mini-groundwater simulation models. Students will determine under what conditions contamination occurs from a variety of sources such as spill, farms, and buried tanks and how polluted groundwater eventually reaches the drinking water supply. The class will also look at ways to clean oil spills and observe the use of microbes for oil degradation. Finally the class will look at how water pollution can be reduced. The keys to keeping water clean are effective cleanup of oil and gasoline spills, proper sewage treatment, and reduction of pollutants.

Music Technology camp will explore a variety of musical technology, both as a tool to learn about music, and a means of expression. iPad and computer technology will be key in this course. Music theory is an important part of understanding how music is put together, how musical thoughts can be written, and how to perform the ideas of others. Music Ace is an innovative computer game that teaches music theory in a fun way. Arguably the most powerful way to express oneself in music is through the creation of it, or composing or music. We will explore music composition using GarageBand, a looping software that is accessible to beginners and offers more advanced techniques for more experienced students. There will be several other music games and software we will explore and create with. And finally, we’ll have some good old-fashioned fun using Guitar Hero. Throughout the week students will create music and videos to go with their musical creations. At the end of the week students will present some of their work and take home a DVD of their creations.

Puppetry, Grades 1-3 Puppetry Camp will explore the many facets of bringing a puppet to life including: using facial expressions to create moods, creating a character with its own personality, using a variety of voices, and using staging to better communicate the story to the audience. Students will create a puppet musical from start to finish, from designing and helping to construct their own puppet characters, to writing the songs and speaking parts, to directing and performing at the end of the week. This is a great class for budding actors, singers, puppeteers and kids who love to be creative! School of Rock, Grades 6-8

This instrumental music workshop is designed to facilitate the study, rehearsal and performance of rock ‘n’ roll music. The students will be organized into bands. Following a week of rehearsal, students will perform their pieces for classmates, teachers, family, and friends at a special presentation on Friday at 3pm. All instruments types are welcome. School of Jazz, Grades 6-8 School of Jazz offers students the opportunity to pay instrumental jazz in an ensemble setting. All instrument types are welcome including strings, brass, woodwind and percussion. Repertoire will focus on classic standards, modern works, and popular styles. Students will also learn about jazz theory and how to apply it through composition and improvisation. Jazz Band plays repertoire at intermediate and advance levels. Some instrumental experience is required. Specialty camps include an afternoon field trip on Wednesday and BBQ lunch on Friday. The Jazz Band will perform for classmates, teachers, family, and friends at a special presentation on Friday at 3 pm. Athletic camps focus on athletic ability, team work, sportsmanship, and strategies of the game. Students have the opportunity to explore multiple sports, at any age, and learn to develop as an athlete – and as a member of a team. Athletic camps are a great way to exercise, develop a love for sports, and meet teammates and coaches.

CO-ED FLAG FOOTBALL COED BASKETBALL

Grades K-3 Are you ready for some football? If so, join our co-ed flag football team. In this week long camp, children will learn the fundamentals of flag pulling, passing, catching, route running and the rules of the game. Whether they are an experienced or a beginning player this camp will teach each child something new and exciting for their upcoming season. Athletes will compete against each other in one–on–one drills geared to allow them the opportunity to transfer individual skills taught in the camp to simulated game–play experiences. Athletes will benefit from a better understanding of football and development of teamwork and competition while getting in shape for the fall season. SPRING FOOTBALL, Grades 4-8 Looking to improve your football IQ? Get a chance to improve as an athlete and teammate within the St Mary’s football program. Athletes will improve their fundamental football skills, such as flag pulling, passing, catching, and covering. During the camp, athletes will be introduced to the offensive and defensive strategies while building teamwork. Position specific drills, conditioning, and scrimmages will help develop the football related skills needed to be successful. Grades 4-8 Ready to take flight next season in a St. Mary’s Falcons jersey? This camp offers players the opportunity to become better basketball players by working on individual offensive and defensive fundamentals that are essential to not only the game but to the St. Mary’s playbook. CHEERLEADING, Grades K-8 Cheerleading is one of the most popular sports for young girls. Participating in cheerleading provides girls with a chance to be active, learn technical skills, leadership, responsibility and teamwork. Join the St. Mary’s Cheer coaches for an exciting week learning all the essentials to be a cheerleader. Whether you are an experienced cheerleader or a beginner, in Cheer Camp, you will learn organized cheerleading routines, proper hand and body movements, as well as elements of tumbling, dance, jumps and stunting. Campers will be put into groups depending on their skills and age. At the end of the week everyone will participate in a choreographed performance. Are you ready to participate in the grandest and oldest of Olympic sports? Then Track and Field is for you! Join us as we learn and work towards that Olympic motto of Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger). Students will learn to run faster and longer and fine tune their jumping and throwing skills. Students will also receive training on the basics of the relays including the all-important baton exchange. The camp is committed to a long term athletic development approach . Participants learn while having lots of fun!

Teamwork, listening response games, character development, confidence and self-control are all part of our fun-filled Karate camp. The camp includes agility and movement development, self-defense strategies and tactics, awareness and safety training. Campers will have fun in this fast-paced and high energy camp.

The physical component of camp will include; flexibility, balance, agility and awareness. Join us for a week of fun and volleyball as we prepare for the season ahead. This camp will focus on all the aspects of volleyball needed for a successful campaign. We will be working hard on the basic skills, such as passing setting hitting and serving, while at the same time getting to know the basics of defensive and offensive strategies. Woven through this camp will be time spent on conditioning, footwork, nutrition, jump training, and core work. All of this in a fun and stress free setting! Whether you are coming to train for the season or just to improve your overall skill and enjoyment, this is the camp for you!
