WELCOME TO ST. MARY’S SUMMER RESORT! ST. MARY’S SUMMER RESORT is dedicated to developing the whole child through inquiry-based exploration. Our unique program includes Academic Prep, Specialty Camps, Day Camp, and Athletic Camps all in an educational environment. Students will have the opportunity to meet new friends, try new things and make new memories while attending our Summer Resort.

ACADEMIC PREP

SPECIALTY CAMPS

Academic Prep provides grade level classes to keep students engaged in the learning process. The classes reinforce existing knowledge and introduce new concepts to prepare them for the start of school in the fall. Students will enhance their reading, writing and mathematics skills to build a stronger foundation for the next grade level. Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8 Classes available. June 26 – July 21 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Specialty Camps allow students to pursue a new interest or develop a passion in several areas. Camps in technology, science, cooking, language, and art provide an in depth experience into each area. ATHLETIC CAMPS

Day Camp offers a wide range of activities from art and science, to crafts and games. Students build friendships in a safe, fun environment. Athletic Camps focus on ability, sportsmanship, and strategies of the game. Students have the opportunity to explore different sports, develop sport specific skills, and build team work. Our camps are a great way to exercise, meet new teammates, and prepare for the upcoming season. Kindergarten through Grade 8, weekly camps available. Full (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) and Half Day (12:00 pm to 4:00 pm) options

LUNCH IS INCLUDED The price of lunch is included in all 9:00 am to 4:00 pm full day camps and all 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm afternoon half day camps for EEP through Grade 8 students. There will be a daily lunch offered from our lunch provider Cater Tots. Cater Tots prides itself on providing the healthiest meals with the freshest ingredients that appeal to children all over Southern California. With the help of their Registered Dietitian April Murray, meeting your child’s nutritional needs is at the forefront of what they do.

EARLY EDUCATION DAY CAMPS 2 – 5 YEAR OLDS Young campers learn best in a hands-on, fun environment that keeps them learning, engaged and entertained. Our Early Education Program (EEP) Day Camp combines facilitated activities, arts & crafts, games, music & movement, special visitors and amazing on-site events. Each week is based on an age-appropriate weekly theme to keep the exciting adventure going all summer long!

EARLY EDUCATION ACADEMIC PREP JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN ACADEMIC PREP 4 years old by September 1, 2017 Dates: Four Week Session, June 26 – July 21 Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm Cost: $850 Closed July 3 & 4 In preparation for the coming school year, rising Junior Kindergarten students are invited to participate in a unique three hour summer school unit of inquiry. Junior Kindergarten students will participate in “Play with a Purpose” as they focus on the skills vital to success in the next school year; including social and emotional development, language and literacy, cognitive development and motor skills. Each day begins with a warm welcome and large group activities. The children learn routines and explore purposeful play in classroom centers. Additionally, students will engage in small group, hand-on activities and games while learning early literacy and math concepts. Our Get Set For School Handwriting curriculum will be implemented and practiced daily through a multisensory approach.

This amazing new cooking class incorporates cooking lessons based off of the most loved food inspired children’s books. Join us each week as we read stories that will stir up excitement to cook some fun, delicious, and creative foods. We will be learning in a safe, hands-on environment about cooking tools, measuring, following recipes, cooking and playing some fun culinary motivated games with our friends. 3-5 year olds STEAM is all around us! Children will be able to explore, observe, ask questions and make predictions with everyday items such as: crayons, pasta noodles and toothpicks! Children will be able to put their ideas into action, reflect on them and then figure out how to take their idea up another notch to invite even more questioning, exploration and hypothesizing. 3-5 year olds Come join us in one or all three fun filled weeks of tennis. Students will be introduced to this wonderful life long sport that will help children work on hand eye coordination as well as body control and stroke technique. Students will also have the opportunity to play a variety of fun and interactive tennis games that will promote balance and body control, agility, strength, as well as social skills. ACADEMIC PREP GRADE 2 PREP Students will enjoy a variety of reading opportunities while engaging in literacy centers. Students will also participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups to build their sight word vocabulary, increase word solving skills and fluency, in addition to sharpening their comprehension skills at their individual instructional level.

KINDERGARTEN PREP gives students a chance to explore in a safe, challenging and joyful learning environment. The children develop a sense of belonging and create friendships that eases the transition to Kindergarten in the fall. The children also learn classroom routines and explore recess games.

Through the use of Handwriting Without Tears, incoming Grade 2 students will continue to practice proper letter formation. During Writer’s Workshop, students will have the opportunity to compose, revise, illustrate and share their individual, original stories.

Literacy activities include engaging, hands-on activities for students to practice letter identification and letter sounds. Guided reading involves small, differentiated groupings of students to support the development of effective reading strategies.

Students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers, focusing on the automaticity of basic addition and subtraction facts, real world word problems, time, and money. Students will work at their individual levels, while interacting with others through instructional games and centers. Everyday Math concepts will be reviewed during the lessons.

Using our Handwriting Without Tears curriculum, the students practice letter formation. Through a Writer’s Workshop, the students become authors and learn to put their ideas on paper with pictures and words.

GRADE 3 PREP Summer reading will focus on small, differentiated guided reading groups, concentrating on developing individual skills and strategies to improve comprehension, fluency and inference. The students will also read a class novel to explore the elements of character, setting and plot and further expand their vocabulary, prediction and summarizing skills. Students will experience reading different genres including poetry, plays, fiction and non-fiction.

The Everyday Math program offers students an opportunity to participate in hands-on, differentiated activities focusing on recognizing, counting and writing numbers, number relationships, patterning, graphs and simple story problems.

The writing program will stimulate the student’s imagination and develop their organization, sentence fluency and word choice through the Lucy Calkins writing program. Students will be taught how to include sensory details, incorporate exciting word choice, elaborate and strengthen their writing voice. Conventional grammar will be taught with the rules of punctuation and verb tense, in addition to high frequency spelling words and cursive handwriting.

GRADE 1 PREP Students will participate in small,

differentiated guided reading groups focused on increasing decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills. Students will build their sight word vocabulary with daily practice, review, and reinforcement. Students will practice appropriate letter formation through the use of Handwriting Without Tears. During Writer’s Workshop, students will have the opportunity to explore and create various types of writing including narrative, informational, and opinion. In addition, students will learn vital grammar skills to strengthen their writing. Students will be encouraged to share their writing with the class and strengthen public speaking skills.

Within the math program students will be taught differentiated mathematical concepts with addition, subtraction, multiplication, measurement, geometry, place value, and fractions through the Everyday Mathematics program. These concepts will be reinforced through interactive, cooperative math games and manipulatives. Computation strategies will be taught to reinforce addition, subtraction and multiplication facts.

During math, students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers to reinforce and build upon their growing knowledge of math concepts. Students will explore addition and subtraction, patterns, measurement, time, and money. Each week of first grade academic prep is themed to align with the IB units covered in first grade. Technology will be consistently integrated to help differentiate and enhance students’ ability levels in reading, writing, and math.

GRADE 4 PREP Students will participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups. Students will learn critical reading strategies that will increase skills in comprehension, accuracy, and fluency at their individual instructional levels. As a class, we will discuss character development, sequence of events, and author’s message in literature.

ACADEMIC PREP In writing, the students will have the opportunity to awaken their creative juices, sharpen their writing skills, and explore the writing process using a Writer’s Workshop model. Students will produce narrative, informational and persuasive pieces, and have the opportunity to revise their writing based on reflection, teacher conferences, and peer input.

The students will also become familiar with digital resources that reinforce mathematical concepts and review critical skills.

PRE-ALGEBRA PREP, GRADE 6-7 will be a

four-week course for incoming 7th and 8th grade Algebra students who have tested into the course. During this fourweek span, students will review concepts from the previous year, and will become familiar with some of the major algebraic concepts in order to prepare for the upcoming school year. Students will work with exponents, order of operations, the distributive property, factoring, and percentages. They will solve two and multi-step equations, inequalities, and evaluate algebraic expressions. There will be time to focus on problems and concepts in the Algebra summer math packet in order to prepare for the upcoming school year.

GRADE 5 PREP Students will participate in small guided reading groups designed to meet the student at their individual instructional level. Students will practice a variety of reading strategies that will increase skills in comprehension, accuracy, and fluency.

ACADEMIC PREP FOR LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE, GRADE 6-8 Students entering Grade 6

Students entering grades 7 or 8 will read short fiction as well as non-fiction selections. We will annotate the texts, and maintain a journal to analyze characterization, setting, mood and themes. They will use quotes from the text to support claims and identify the author’s purpose. Figurative language such as metaphor, simile and personification will also be explored. Students will build on their knowledge of language mechanics through practice with an online program. The MLA format, used throughout Middle School, will be reviewed and followed. This course provides excellent preparation and reinforcement for the rigorous reading and writing requirements at St. Mary’s. algorithm, geometry, divisibility rules, and percents.

Middle School students should select the appropriate math class based upon their math level for the next school year. Language and Literature class placement will be done according to grade level.

MATH PREP, GRADE 6 Math summer school, will

be a four- week course for incoming grade 6 students who have tested into the program. During this four-week span, students will review concepts from the previous year, and will be introduced to some of the topics covered in Grade 6 math. Students will work on solving problems that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole

Students will also have the opportunity to relearn cursive, a lost art through Handwriting Without Tears. They will learn the stroke orders and proper letter formations that is geared towards all students. It does not matter if you’re a righty or a lefty!

SPECIALTY CAMPS WEEK 1 JUNE 19-23 “ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE” - ACTING FOR THE STAGE

Grades 5-8 This course enlarges the student’s understanding of “performance” in a playful, encouraging, collaborative atmosphere. Because actor training is also life training, students can expect to find new, deeper connections to others and their own creativity, unlocking profound layers of empathy through character exploration. Thus, particular emphasis will be given to expanding the imagination, supporting classmates’ growth, and collaborating effectively. Students will perform a range of works from classical Shakespeare to the more contemporary Samuel Beckett and fully grasp stage presence in a dynamic manner. SIMPLY SENSATIONAL SCULPTURE

Grades 1-8 Students will unleash their inner ability to model creatively, exploring the fascinating world of sculpture while learning about techniques employed in the Ancient World and discovering the contemporary inventions of Claes Oldenburg, Dale Chihuly, and Alexander Calder. They will have the opportunity to experiment with many mediums, producing a variety of sculptures including small mixed-media figures; relief-style friezes; mixed-media masks; wire mobiles; pieces imitating glass artist Chihuly; and works inspired by the trendy soft sculptures of Oldenburg! “PICTURE THIS” IPAD PHOTOGRAPHY

Grades 1-8 Students will learn the basics of digital photography including composition, lighting, landscapes, and portraits using an iPad’s camera. The students will also learn how to edit, print, and frame their photos for presentation. At the end of the week, the students will display their portfolio of their best work in a gallery for friends and family. PAINTING ON PANELS!

Grades 1-8 Students will focus on traditional painting methods and their contemporary application including tempera (egg tempera was the predominant method used in the Renaissance and pre-sixteenth century) from early Renaissance Siena and acrylics (a schoolsafe alternative to oil paint which came to be in use later on in Renaissance Venice). Small wood panels coated with traditional gesso ground and canvas panels will be used. Students will learn about the ways that artists combined dry pigments with beeswax, egg, milk (casein)or oil in order to create mediums prior to the relatively recent (circa 1840) invention of paint in tubes. Using various exercises, technical proficiency will be encouraged through simplified techniques employed in master paintings, promoting a deeper understanding of color, composition and construction of a pictorial space, and through creation of original work from observed reality using the same methods. Students will come to understand the history of painting, while crafting their own pieces inspired by great artists! DRAWING TO SEE

Grades 1-8 Observe the world more deeply by drawing what you see! Learn skills, experimenting with a variety of devices, to draw what you see in the natural and built environment. Explore the roots of drawing (including cave drawings and drawings of masters such as Fra Angelico, Raphael, Da Vinci, Van Gogh and Matisse) and its changing and enduring function. In response to observation of the visual material presented, students will work with a variety of early techniques and media as well as experimental materials and processes, creating sketches and studies for more finished works, and expanding upon doodles to produce pieces with a conceptual framework. ”A LITTLE DIRT DOESN’T HURT” - FALL GARDENING Grades 5-8 Design a garden on the school’s campus and plant ornamental sunflower and pumpkin seeds to be harvested in the fall. Learn the importance of having good soil and how to prepare it for planting. Students will learn about seed propagation, the proper care of seedlings, and how to care for newly transplanted plants. Learn about the importance of pollinators and how to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators to the garden. Students will observe the growth of these plants and care for them. They will pick the sunflowers to beautify our campus and harvest the pumpkins to be carved in EEP for Halloween. Camp participants will serve as delegates as we hold a session of the United Nations. METAL ART THROUGH ELECTRO-ETCHING

Grades 4-8 Learn the technique of electro-etching. Explore how chemical reactions, catalyzed by electricity, can be used to create beautiful and unique metal artifacts. In this course, students will investigate the science behind voltaic cells and their application to the art of metal etching. Participants will create their own galvanic cell using simple materials and use them to create jewelry and metal artifacts like ornaments, pendants, earrings, keychains, and bookmarks. One-of-akind pieces will be created from copper, brass, bronze, and aluminum. The electro-etching technique has been used for over a century in both industrial and artistic pursuits. The safe and environmentally responsible process requires little energy and no hazardous chemicals. Come explore one of the many connections between art and science! Grades 5-8 Here’s your chance to be an amateur microbiologist. Learn about microscopic creatures you cannot see with your naked eye. You will find out whether whole milk spoils at the same rate as two percent and skim milk. We will explore “Yeast on the Rise” and make and bake our own bread. Did you know that a bacteria naturally present on cabbage can change it into the common, fermented food called sauerkraut? We will also collect water from Aliso Creek and observe microscopic organisms present in our local creek. St. Mary’s Grade K- 4 Sports Camps will focus on fun and fundamentals. For any athlete, the summer is a very important time to improve his or her skills or to simply be introduced to a new sport. Coaches will focus on developing motor skills, having athletes understand the general knowledge of the game, teamwork, and individual/team skill training. Athletes will do all of this in a fun, relaxed, yet competitive environment.

During camps, students will become better athletes by developing a knowledge of the game and program. Athletes will be introduced to the offensive and defensive strategies through position specific drills and scrimmages to help develop the skills needed to be successful.
