Please note that your student is not fully registered until full online payment has been submitted. $40 Registration Fee is Non-Refundable. CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY St. Mary’s reserves the right to cancel or combine classes and camps based on enrollment. To request a refund, a written notice (email to summerresort@smaa.org) must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the class or session. Any changes after the expiration of the early bird discount will result in a loss of the early bird discount for that class.

St. Mary’s Summer Resort is dedicated to developing the whole child through inquiry-based exploration. Our unique program includes Academic Prep, Specialty Camps, Day Camp and Athletic Camps all in an educational environment. Students have the opportunity to meet new friends, try new things and make new memories while attending Summer Resort.

ACADEMIC PREP

SPECIALTY CAMPS

Academic Prep provides grade level classes to keep students engaged in the learning process by reinforcing existing knowledge while learning new concepts. Students will enhance their reading, writing and mathematics skills to build a stronger foundation for the next grade level. Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8 Classes available. June 25 – July 20 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Specialty Camps allow students to pursue a new interest or develop a passion in several areas. Camps in technology, science, cooking, language and art provide an in depth experience into each area. Students will enjoy feeling like experts in their newly learned fields. DAY CAMP

Day Camp offers a wide range of activities from art and science to games for students to build friendships in a safe, fun environment. Day Camp fosters students’ emotional, social, physical, cognitive and creative growth through a variety of activities and environments. ATHLETIC CAMPS

Athletic Camps focus on ability, sportsmanship and strategies of the game. Students have the opportunity to explore different sports, develop sport specific skills and build team work. Our camps are a great way to exercise, meet new teammates and prepare for the upcoming season. Grade 1 through Grade 8 (Not available to Kindergarten) Full (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) and Half Day (12:00 pm to 4:00 pm) options

LUNCH IS INCLUDED

The price of lunch is included in all 9:00 am to 4:00 pm full day camps and all 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm afternoon half day camps for EEP through Grade 8 students. There will be a daily lunch offered from our lunch provider, Cater Tots. Cater Tots prides itself on providing the healthiest meals with the freshest ingredients that appeal to children all over Southern California. With the help of their Registered Dietitian, April Murray, meeting your child’s nutritional needs is at the forefront of what they do. 3

JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN ACADEMIC PREP Minimum age: 4 years old by September 1, 2018 Dates: Four Week Session, June 25 – July 20 (Closed July 4)

In preparation for the coming school year, rising Junior Kindergarten students are invited to participate in a unique three hour summer school unit of inquiry. Junior Kindergarten students will participate in “Play with a Purpose” as they focus on the skills vital to success in the next school year; including social and emotional development, language and literacy, cognitive development and motor skills. Each day begins with a warm welcome and large group activities. The children learn routines and explore purposeful play in classroom centers. Additionally, students will engage in small group, hands-on activities and games while learning early literacy and math concepts. Our Get Set For School Handwriting curriculum will be implemented and practiced daily through a multisensory approach.

KINDERGARTEN ACADEMIC PREP Minimum age: 5 years old by September 1, 2018 Dates: Four Week Session, June 25 – July 20 (Closed July 4)

Through hands-on, engaging activities and lessons, incoming kindergarten students will reinforce their knowledge of letters and sounds. They will also participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups to develop their reading skills. Through the use of Handwriting Without Tears curriculum, students in Kindergarten Prep will practice proper letter formation. Using Lucy Calkins curriculum, students will have the opportunity to write and illustrate narrative stories. The students will participate in hands-on, differentiated math activities focusing on counting and writing, number concepts, patterning, graphing and story problems. Kindergarten Prep gives students a chance to experience Morning Meetings, classroom routines and, most importantly, it gives students a chance to develop new friendships which will give them confidence and a sense of belonging when entering Kindergarten in the fall.

3-6 year olds and fully toilet trained This sports camp will use movement to help enhance your campers learning experience. The campers will learn the basic fundamentals and mechanics of a variety of sports. They will be able to build selfconfidence, practice teamwork and improve fine and gross motor skills. Each day will focus on a different sport and incorporate new activities to improve muscle tone, hand eye coordination, reaction time, overall cardiovascular fitness and more. 3-6 year olds and fully toilet trained In the Spanish Camp this Summer we will explore the fun of learning Spanish. By linking words with context we will be covering different topics and learning concepts such as greetings, colors, shapes, animals, fruits and body parts. THE SENSE OF FINE ARTS

STEAM

3-6 year olds and fully toilet trained The five senses are an important part of early childhood development. In this Fine Arts camp, children will pair this important exploration with artistic expression. They will be given an opportunity to explore their senses through arts and crafts, pottery, cooking, and dramatic play. Children will be able to explore, observe, ask questions and make predictions with everyday items such as: crayons, pasta noodles and toothpicks! Children will be able to put their ideas into action, reflect on them and then figure out how to take their idea up another notch to invite even more questioning, exploration and hypothesizing. Through observations and hands-on experiences, they will find there is always another way to create their own innovative ideas. St. Mary’s Grade 1 to Grade 5 Day Camp is ready for a fun-filled summer. Students will enjoy a variety of games, crafts, social time with friends, and activities that encourage imagination and cooperation. Weekly field trips to local parks and special on site visitors add a unique and enriching experience for each child that creates lasting memories for years to come. At St. Mary’s Day Camp every day is a new adventure!

ACADEMIC PREP – GRADES 1-8

Through the use of Handwriting Without Tears, incoming second grade students will continue to practice proper letter formation. During Writer’s Workshop, students will have the opportunity to compose, revise, illustrate and share their individual, original stories.

GRADES 1-5 (Lower School) Dates: 4 Week session, June 25-July 20 Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm Cost: $775

Incoming grade 2 students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers, focusing on the automaticity of basic addition and subtraction facts, real world word problems, time and money. Students will work at their individual levels, while interacting with others through instructional games and centers. Everyday Math concepts will be reviewed during the lessons.

GRADE 1 PREP Teacher: Anne Yeargin

Students will participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups focused on increasing decoding, fluency and comprehension skills. Students will practice reading aloud and listening to a variety of books, as well as building comprehension by making predictions, answering discussion questions and examining text features.

GRADE 3 PREP Teacher: Lynda Burchill Incoming Grade 3 summer reading will focus on small differentiated guided reading groups, concentrating on developing individual skills and strategies to improve comprehension, fluency and inference. The students will also read a class novel to explore the elements of character, setting and plot and further expand their vocabulary, prediction and summarizing skills. Students will experience reading different genres including poetry, plays, fiction and non-fiction.

Students will practice appropriate letter formation through the use of Handwriting Without Tears. During Writer’s Workshop, students will have the opportunity to explore and create various types of writing including narrative, informational and opinion. Students will build their independence as writers by learning how to plan and organize their writing across multiple pages, include interesting details, and use appropriate conventions such as punctuation.

The writing program will stimulate the student’s imagination and develop their organization, sentence fluency and word choice through the Lucy Calkins writing program. Students will be taught how to include sensory details, incorporate exciting word choice, elaborate and give their writing great voice. Conventional grammar will be taught with the rules of punctuation and verb tense, in addition to high frequency spelling words and cursive handwriting.

During math, students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers to reinforce and build upon their growing knowledge of math. Students will explore concepts at their individual level such as addition and subtraction, patterns and telling time. These concepts will be reinforced through interactive games and manipulatives. Students will build their problem solving and critical thinking skills by explaining their thinking, learning a variety of strategies and working collaboratively on more challenging mathematical tasks. GRADE 2 PREP Teacher: Stacey Kinney Incoming grade 2 students will enjoy a variety of opportunities to read, and be read to while engaging in hands-on literacy centers. Students will also participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups to build their sight word vocabulary, increase word solving skills and fluency, in addition to sharpening their comprehension skills at their individual instructional level. St. Mary’s proudly uses Fountas and Pinnell’s literacy program.

Within the math program students will be taught differentiated mathematical concepts with addition, subtraction, multiplication, measurement, geometry, place value, fractions and more through the Everyday Mathematics program. These concepts will be reinforced through interactive and cooperative math games and manipulatives. The Building Math Fluency Program will be taught to reinforce computation strategies and improve skills in addition, subtraction and multiplication.

ACADEMIC PREP – GRADES 1-8 GRADES 4/5 PREP (Combination Class) Teacher: Kevin Chan

Students will review the statistical concepts of mean, median, mode, and range, and work on percentages. There will be time to focus on problems and concepts in the Pre-Algebra summer math packet in order to prepare for the upcoming school year.

Grade 4: In our reading curriculum, incoming Grade 4 students

participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups. Students will learn critical reading strategies that will increase skills in comprehension, accuracy, and fluency at their individual instructional level. As a class, we will discuss character development, sequence of events, and author’s message in literature.

ALGEBRA PREP, GRADES 6-8 Teacher: Suzanne Bucaro

Algebra 1A: Algebra 1A Prep is a four-week course for incoming grade 6 and 7 students who have tested into the course. During this four-week span, students will review concepts from the previous year, and will be introduced to some of the topics covered in Algebra 1A and 1B. Students will work on solving problems with all operations involving integers, fractions, and decimals. They will solve problems using the order of operations, and evaluate onestep and multi-step equations. Students will review ratios, rates and proportions, and how to calculate percentages. They will work on graphing linear equations, and be introduced to calculating the slope of a line. There will be time to focus on problems and concepts in the Algebra 1A summer math packet in order to prepare for the upcoming school year.

In writing, the students will have the opportunity to awaken their creative juices, sharpen their writing skills, and explore the writing process using the Lucy Calkins Writer’s Workshop model. Students will produce narrative, informational and persuasive pieces. Students will have the opportunity to revise their writing based on reflection, teacher conferences, and peer input. During math, incoming grade 4 students will engage in differentiated math activities using math manipulatives and interactive games. They will practice automaticity of basic math facts, place value, fractions, equations and variables. They will build upon their already growing understanding of multiplication and division and apply it in real world contexts. The students will also become familiar with digital resources that reinforce mathematical concepts and review critical skills.

Algebra 1B: This year, Algebra 1B will be a four-week course for

incoming Grades 7 and 8 Algebra students who have tested into the course. During this four-week span, students will review concepts from the previous year, and will become familiar with some of the major algebraic concepts in order to prepare for the upcoming school year. Students will work with exponents, order of operations, and all operations with real numbers. They will solve two and multistep equations, inequalities, and evaluate algebraic expressions. Students will review graphing linear functions, how to calculate the slope of a line, and writing the general equation of a line. We will preview systems of linear equations, which is introduced in Algebra 1B. There will be time to focus on problems and concepts in the Algebra 1B summer math packet in order to prepare for the upcoming school year.

ACADEMIC PREP FOR LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE, GRADES 6-8

Teacher: Heidi Galloway Grade 6: Students coming in to grade six will read one novel together this summer. We will annotate the book, and maintain a journal, in which we analyze plot, setting, characters and themes, using quotes from the text to support claims. Students will build on their knowledge of the Lucy Calkins method, to write short response-to-literature essays. Students will also spend time writing an “isearch” paper, a research report on a subject of their own choosing. The MLA format, used throughout Middle School, will be reviewed and reinforced. This course provides excellent preparation and reinforcement for the rigorous reading and writing requirements at St. Mary’s.

Incoming Grade 5 students will engage in differentiated math activities using manipulatives and interactive games from the Everyday Math series and Singapore Math (Primary Mathematics). Finally, partial numbers will be explored as the children work with fractions, decimals, multiplication algorithms, long division algorithm, geometry, divisibility rules, and percents.

Students will work on solving problems that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Students will work on solving problems with all operations involving integers, fractions, and decimals. They will solve problems using the order of operations, and evaluate one-step equations.

The focus of this specialty camp is on riding and exploring. During the week long camp, you will climb Aliso and Wood Canyon Wilderness park and various bike trails within South OC.
