Research and professional development

When the Biaggini Scholars aren’t working on faculty-guided research projects, these junior and senior Biology majors are traveling to present their findings and network with industry leaders. A $1-million endowment supports the Biaggini Endowed Biological Sciences Research Program, which enables joint faculty and student research in healthcare and the biosciences.

The demand for highly qualified science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals is growing every year. Our region depends on this talent pool to meet the needs of the aerospace, biosciences, healthcare, environmental, IT, cybersecurity, energy, manufacturing, automotive, and oil and gas sectors. The School of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) provides a vibrant, challenging and supportive environment that prepares the next generation of experienced researchers, skilled engineers and scientists to become engaged citizens of the world. As a SET student, you are a part of a community that is committed to your success. Our award-winning professors are dedicated and caring teachers whose doors are always open to you. They are energetic researchers who will mentor and work with you in our well-equipped laboratories. They are involved in community outreach activities that will give you an opportunity to participate and apply your STEM education in service to mankind. With their guidance, you will craft your own success story. By integrating a liberal arts education that is grounded in our Marianist heritage and charism with comprehensive and balanced STEM curricula, we prepare our students for success not only in their professional careers, but in all aspects of their lives. Students also have the opportunity to live and learn in a unique residence hall community and participate in a range of career and professional development opportunities. I invite you to learn more about the School of Science, Engineering and Technology — through a phone call to my office, on a campus visit, or online at www.stmarytx.edu/set. Forensic Science is an exciting field and one of the nation’s fastest growing job markets. The Forensic Science program at St. Mary’s integrates the physical, social and life sciences with professional preparation.

Prepare for graduate programs with MARC U*STAR

For nearly 30 years, students have enjoyed a rigorous research experience working alongside faculty mentors through the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research (U*STAR) program.

Take the “FASTS” track to medical school

St. Mary’s students pursuing medicine can gain early acceptance into the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) School of Medicine under the Facilitated Admissions for South Texas Scholars (FASTS). Historically, more than half of SET graduates who apply are accepted by medical and dental schools, higher than the national average of 40 percent.

A bright future in medicine

Students accepted into the Joint Admission Medical Program ( JAMP) are assured admission into one of the eight Texas medical schools if they maintain the necessary requirements. STEM occupations are expected to increase by 17 percent from 2008-2018, compared with 9.8 percent growth in non-STEM jobs. — U.S. Department of Commerce

A web of career options

The Computer Science department offers programs tailored to student interests in order to prepare them for careers in information systems, software development and cybersecurity. Students participate in IT symposia and intern with corporations such as USAA, Southwest Research Institute and more. Computer Science students explore 3-D modeling techniques using Cinema 4D and develop applications for mobile platforms.

Engineering success

For more than 50 years, St. Mary’s has delivered excellence in engineering education. Students choose from seven undergraduate degrees in which they complete a yearlong senior design project and gain internship experience. Industrial, electrical and computer engineering undergraduate programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Unique educational journey

A $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation allows 24 high-performing students to live and learn together as a cohort of STEM Scholars.

Formula for the Future St. Mary’s University partners with the Texas Society of Professional Engineers to host the Bexar County MATHCOUNTS competition — a national enrichment and coaching program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement and excellence. Physics and Earth Sciences students host Fiesta of Physics and the Earth Science Extravaganza — two interactive outreach programs for school children offering exciting, fast-paced demonstrations.

S.A. Best (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) is a

competition that pairs teams of area students with mentors to build a remote-controlled, task-oriented robotic machine in just six weeks.

The ASM Materials Camp for Teachers equips middle and high school educators with innovative experiments and real-life applications that they can take back to their classrooms.

The School of Science, Engineering and Technology participates in the following programs to inspire area youth — especially underrepresented minorities — to pursue STEM fields. The Pre-freshman Engineering Program (PREP) brings hundreds of middle and high school students who are interested in STEM to campus each summer. This challenging program prepares minorities and women for success in advanced studies leading to careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics fields. The Pathways Into Medicine Summer Camp recruits and educates prospective Joint Admission Medical Program students and gives them hands-on experience alongside healthcare professionals in a medical school environment. In the Pre-engineering Robotics and Java Programming Summer Program, high school students explore science and engineering careers, participate in robotics activities, and take field trips to observe professionals in the industry.

High-profile physics internships Physics and Applied Physics students can choose from options in Biophysics, Engineering and Computer Science. They participate in summer research, take on leadership opportunities, and intern with organizations such as NASA, CERN, Southwest Research Institute, NRL, AFRL and Columbia University.

Physics Professor Richard Cardenas, Ph.D., is a recipient of the U.S. PAESMEM (Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring).

Environmental exploration Emphasizing an active student-learning experience, the Environmental Science program encourages students to investigate the complexity of natural systems and includes field trips to area landmarks such as Enchanted Rock, Natural Bridge Caverns and the Blue Wing Solar Project.

Math: the universal language

The Mathematics major helps students develop a quantitative understanding of the world. Through a senior research project, they become world-class problem solvers and hone the ability to communicate solutions orally and in writing.

St. Mary’s was named first in Texas in 2011 by Forbes magazine for helping women succeed in science, engineering, technology and mathematics.
