Letter from the Headmaster GARHETT WAGERS
Dear St. Mark’s Families and Friends, With each passing year, I become more impressed with the community we have at St. Mark’s. While it is true that many of our families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, there are also many who commute from some distance. But the word community refers to more than geographical proximity; I feel it speaks to the values of its culture. Over the past year, we have continued to look at who we are today and who we aspire to be in the future. We have asked ourselves, “why are we here, and who do we serve?” As an answer to these questions, we reworked our Mission Statement, which reads, “The community of St. Mark’s Episcopal School celebrates the uniqueness of each child. We are stewards of our students’ intellectual curiosity, faith, and passion 4
for discovery. We cultivate joy, playfulness, and growth in a child-centered environment.” The new mission statement embodies the St. Mark’s community. It is the lens through which we make all decisions. The choices we make today do make an impact now, but it is important to remember that they will also influence future St. Mark’s children. Therefore, we are called to understand the structure of our school and how it is shaped by our stewardship and service to our community. In some ways, our school can be compared to the pieces of a blueprint. I believe that our supportive community of families is the strong foundation of St. Mark’s. Our outstanding faculty and staff provide the walls that offer immense support for our school, and we all appreciate the importance of the partnership between school and home. Our educational goals and methods are the roof of our
school, as we reach to great heights to achieve lofty, but attainable academic ambitions for each child. Every child is a unique individual, and we aspire to meet them where they are as we guide them through their journey. By modeling growth, kindness and intellectual curiosity, we serve and guide our students, while encouraging them to discover their own passion for education and generosity. You can see in this report that the generosity of our families is providing St. Mark’s with the means required to accomplish our goals. A great school requires a strong internal infrastructure and is built on the support of wonderful teachers. We make a commitment to professional development that recognizes each teacher’s growth as an individual, just like our individualized education approach with each of our students. A positive community environment
that inspires curiosity is supported also by the continued improvement of our physical facilities, as well as the expansion of technology-based resources. From the inviting turf of our field, to the interactive Mimio centers in our Kindergarten class, to the innovative one-to-one iPad program in middle school, we continue to build an environment that inspires learning and growth. I thank you all for the generosity of your gifts this past year and for the support you provide our school. I hope you enjoy this report as it provides a clear and visual representation of our priorities: quality teaching, an environment that inspires curiosity, and curriculum and technology resources that enhance the learning experience. Letter from the Director of Development LOU ELLEN STANSELL
Dear Parents and Friends, Looking backwards and reviewing what happened in a previous year has always been hard for me. I am driven by results, and I generally like to dive into the next project of the school year, rather than pause and reflect on the accomplishments of our past year. Of course, that is exactly what the Annual Report at St. Mark’s does, and its function is important. One of the most significant purposes of this document is to express our gratitude to our supporters. The families who generously give their time, talent, and treasure to this institution 6
help make us what we are today. I continue to be more impressed each year with our fundraising success, our volunteer effort, and our committed parents and families. Thank you for your support! The 2014-15 Annual Fund reached new heights in a shorter timeframe by introducing the condensed campaign. The September 1 to November 30 framework worked remarkably well, and we have Carla Singer and Carey Jordan to thank for taking on this tremendous effort. With just over $383,988 raised, and 92.4% parent participation, this marked our most successful Annual Fund yet. This crucial initiative sustains our school as a whole and elevates everything we do for our students, classrooms, and faculty.
The spring marked our second UnGala in the life of the school. The Home Sweet Home event, chaired by Elizabeth Trammell, raised $102,878 for special projects and technology. In addition, we ended the year on a high note by kicking off More. The St. Mark’s Campaign for Growth. We are forever grateful for Joanie and David Andrews for leading the charge and chairing this campaign. Along with our Board of Trustees, we seized the opportunity to advance our school’s mission and take on this project. But as always, we could not dream of this kind of growth and expansion without the commitments and generosity of our families and supporters. A
list of commitments received as of June 30, 2015 follows in these pages. This is an exciting moment in St. Mark’s Episcopal School’s history. As we move forward with our More. campaign and set goals for the years ahead, I want to express my warmest thanks. Your faithful and generous support paves the way for a very bright future. Lou Ellen Stansell Director of Development

448 STUDENTS WERE ENROLLED OPENING DAY FOR THE 2014 - 2015 SCHOOL YEAR. THAT’S 80 MORE STUDENTS IN JUST FIVE YEARS.
‘14
This is truly an exciting time to be at St. Mark’s. One of the ways that we continued to grow in 2014-15 was our enrollment. We are delighted to report that we started the school year with 448 students. In addition, we continue to experience an exponential increase in the amount of inquiries and interest in our school. At St. Mark’s, we emphasize serving the whole child while offering a rigorous academic curriculum. We actively nurture the development of personal autonomy and agency in all of our students so they may develop into independent learners and thinkers. St. Mark’s is a second home to families who strive to partner with their child’s school, truly creating a community engaged.

The Annual Fund A CLOSER LOOK
AT ST. MARK’S, WE CONTINUE TO EMPHASIZE THAT THE ANNUAL FUND BENEFITS FOUR MAIN INITIATIVES ON CAMPUS: TECHNOLOGY FACILITIES / CAMPUS, CURRICULUM AND CLASSROOMS, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
18
The primary focus of the 2014-15 Annual Fund Campaign was to establish and seed the St. Mark’s Faculty Growth Fund. WHAT IS IT? The St. Mark’s Faculty Growth Fund will provide funding to enrich and support our teachers’ professional development. Opportunities will include advanced degree courses, technology training, curriculum conferences, and teaching methodology workshops. Not only will it foster local opportunities for our teachers, but it will also allow them to travel to seek the best opportunities offered everywhere. WHO WILL BENEFIT? Our teachers and our children are the primary beneficiaries. Our teachers will benefit from continued growth, and our children will benefit from the dynamic learning environment this growth will create. The fund will be integral in attracting and retaining the best and brightest teachers. In this way, it not only benefits today’s students and teachers, but generations to come. HOW WILL IT GROW? The Faculty Growth Fund will continue to grow through a planned revenue stream within future Annual Fund efforts. From now on, 10% of the revenue from the Annual Fund each year will be directed into this fund.
“I’m so thankful for the contributions made to the Faculty Growth Fund. It has personally enabled me to attend the annual conference of the National Science Teachers Association. Second Grade Labs with Dads is a direct result of the additional training I received at that amazing conference! Thank you for your continued support!” – DAWN OWEN, 2ND GRADE TEACHER

Through the guidance of Cortney Richa-Herbert, our Curriculum and Learning Coordinator, St. Mark’s added several new curriculum resources to our program in 2014-15. These additions are just that—resources. Gone are the days of purchasing one book and adding it to a classroom shelf. These new resources come with teacher training, online subscriptions to supplement learning, as well as workbooks and classroom kits. 21
The Annual Fund PROGRAM ENHANCEMENTS

GENIUS HOUR At St. Mark’s, 7th and 8th Grade students are given the opportunity to experience Genius Hour, a selfguided study. Students are asked to think about an interest that they would like to explore further and conduct research, determine deadlines, utilize resources on campus, and complete a final product that demonstrates knowledge on their selected topic. The study must be in some way related to an aspect of academic life, and students must also demonstrate a connection between the project and the St. Mark’s Portrait of a Graduate. Academic topics learned at St. Mark’s can be enhanced and expanded, as we teach our students to take ownership of their education.
5TH GRADE BOOT CAMP In 5th Grade, students join the Middle School, where they obtain more responsibilities. This year we introduced 5th Grade Boot Camp, a
So where did Genius Hour come from? Dr. Troy Roddy has been reading about schools nationwide who are taking on this approach to projects, and he thought it would be a great fit for our oldest students.
comprehensive orientation to Middle School. This program, which was held during the first quarter, was taught by Dr. Troy Roddy, and Ms. Cortney Richa-Hebert, our Curriculum and Learning Coordinator. According to Dr. Roddy,
“WHEN YOU’RE ABLE TO LEVERAGE A CHILD’S NATURAL CURIOSITY AND INTEREST, AND YOU GIVE THEM THE RESOURCES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE A TOPIC, YOU HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SEE SOME REALLY IMPORTANT WORK BEING DONE.” - DR. TROY RODDY
5th Grade Boot Camp is, at its core, “an introduction to an approach to your work as a student that will set you up for success in Middle School.” At the end of the quarter, 5th Grade students were celebrated at a ceremony. MATH LAB St. Mark’s Middle School math teachers, Janet Mayr and Susan Orlicek, were looking for ways to give students more exposure to math in their normal schedule. This year we introduced Math Lab, which is an extended period for students to practice and explore math. Students are using the TenMarks program on the iPad. This app allows students to take a quiz on the iPad, and then a lesson plan is customized and adjusted as the student works through math problems. According to Dr. Roddy, “Math Lab is personalized enrichment, which leverages the use of the iPad for our students.”
23
The Annual Fund PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
St. Mark’s teachers attend countless hours of Professional Development opportunities each year. These invaluable experiences inspire refresh our educators and staff. They consistently bring back fresh ideas and new methods to the classroom. In the 2014-15 school year, our dedicated faculty attended the following events, as a direct result of Annual Fund dollars.
“My experience has been that the most useful and transformative opportunities are those that are self-driven, have a direct impact on one’s work with students, and are shared with colleagues. The professional development opportunities our teachers are taking meet those three criteria and are having a positive impact on the student experience at St. Mark’s.” – DR. TROY RODDY, HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

With Allie Johnson, our Director of Technology at the helm, St. Mark’s continues to grow technology in all areas of our school. In addition, the technology budget covers software, hardware, and infrastructure. St. Mark’s is committed to a one-to-one iPad program in our Middle School classes. With more resources available to our students on their devices, this program allows flexibility and access for our students.
Capital Campaign Report EXPANSION
WHY ARE WE EXPANDING? At St. Mark’s we are ever-mindful and grateful for our engaged community. Our size is a strength; we are purposefully small, creating an environment where every child is known and celebrated. We feel that the right size for serving our early childhood and elementary students changes when students reach the Middle School. Increasing our number of students in this division will not only offer them a broader social environment, but also allow us to offer expanded programs and scheduling. By growing the broader middle school population, while keeping class size small, we grow with our students, offering middle school students the very best opportunities in terms of academic, athletic, social, and extracurricular endeavors. WHY NOW? Our ability to expand and grow within our existing location is limited. The lease on the adjacent property presented a unique opportunity. Our trustees and school leadership has seized this opportunity to better serve our middle school students. 28
29
David Andrews, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Campaign Co-Chair and Joanie Andrews, Capital Campaign Chair, Garhett Wagers, and Lead Supporters, Kim Van Gundy, and Amy and Mark Melton.
HOW WILL THIS IMPACT THE SCHOOL? This project will increase overall academic opportunities and program options such as athletics, fine arts, leveled academic courses, performing arts and languages. The gradual expansion will be achieved by adding up to 14 students per grade, for a total of 54 students in grades 6-8. WHO WILL USE THIS BUILDING? While the classrooms planned for this new building are for St. Mark’s Middle School students, the “idea lab” and gymnasium space will be used by the entire community. We envision students at all grade levels using the gym space for either physical education programming or interscholastic sports, while the “idea lab” lends itself to collaborative work suitable for interdisciplinary projects at all levels. 30

Library Report
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
CHAIRPERSON, JULIE CHIU The Libraries’ two main fundraisers throughout the year are the Richardson’s Bookfair in November 2014, as well as the Barnes and Noble Bookfair in May 2015. These two events combined, raised over $6,000 for the St. Mark’s libraries. The money raised from these important events directly benefits our students. The lower and upper libraries added hundreds of new books and titles to their collections this past year as a result of these funds. In addition, the libraries benefit from a partnership with the Parent Guild to bring visiting authors to our campus. In 2014-15 we welcomed Lisa Wheeler and Linda LeBlanc. 42
