Lower School Introductory Parent Conferences:
Allow parents to tell their child’s story and share their hopes and dreams for the year.
Students will go through a modified full day schedule to meet teachers, get course information, receive books, etc. Mr. Burgy will give a special “What to expect in _ grade” for parents (the specific times of these events will be published soon). Students will get a full academic technology orientation. Orientations are held from 8:00 - 3:15 PM and have required attendance The middle school orientation days are full days of school and will be important for students to be in attendance. early dismissal
The first four days of school, our early childhood students (Preschool 2s through Kindergarten) will have early dismissal at 11:00 AM. Our regular dismissal routine will begin the following Monday.
boo hoo breakfast
Our annual “Boo Hoo Breakfast” is hosted by our Parent Guild on the first day of school immediately following drop-off. It’s a time to welcome the year and enjoy food and fellowship with new friends. Parents are invited to come by for a quick cup of coffee, or stay for the hour. Although the title of this event is the “Boo Hoo” breakfast, it is a happy occasion as we celebrate this milestone and mixed emotions of starting a new year and getting older.

episcopal identity
the insider’s guide to st. mark’s | 2019-2020
St. Mark’s Episcopal School was founded in 1960 as an educational ministry of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. With the tradition of inclusion and open inquiry, Episcopal schools recognize the religious pluralism of this country and welcome students of all creeds to their programs.
18
The religion program at St. Mark’s recognizes that we are all on a spiritual journey. We strive to help each child know they are loved by God and to foster a sense of wonder and joy. The religion curriculum encourages and welcomes wondering and questioning in a safe and loving environment.
chapel Once a month, the school hosts an All School Chapel for students in 1st through 8th grade. All School Chapels occur on Thursday mornings, therefore once a month Elementary students will have chapel on Thursday in lieu of their regularly scheduled Wednesday service. These dates will be communicated via the school calendar. Students are required to wear their dress uniforms on Chapel days.
weekly chapel time
Early Childhood Chapel* Wednesday mornings at 9:15 AM Elementary Chapel Wednesday mornings at 8:15 AM Middle School Chapel Thursday mornings at 8:15 AM *Preschool 3s through Kindergarten
Each division gathers for an age-appropriate chapel once a week that includes prayer, song, scripture, and teaching. Students are required to attend chapel and encouraged to participate joyfully and respectfully. Gathering for chapel weekly grounds our community in our Christian faith and allows us to center ourselves on God. This sense of belonging is incorporated in the classroom through the respectful treatment of one another. While strongly rooted in Judeo-Christian teaching, we also recognize and celebrate the diversity present in our community. Students of all faiths are invited to participate in chapel in ways that are appropriate to their religion. From a young age, students are encouraged to take leadership roles in chapel by serving as acolytes and chapel readers. As students mature, they are given opportunities for more leadership in chapel planning. Our Chapel Chums program pairs middle school students with elementary students for our monthly All School Chapel. This program fosters relationships between students, and allows our middle school students to be leaders with their younger counterparts. These relationships are carried over into other school events through the year.

lunch program
20
Our caterer, Flik Independent School Dining (www.flikisd.com), promises “To provide wholesome, nutritious meals that fuel the minds of our campus communities, each and every day.” Our hot lunch menu starts at Pre-K. In addition, there is a daily salad bar, soup station, deli station, and a specialty station, which may include hot sandwiches or grain bowls. Payment for the year is made to the school rather than the caterer, and can be done so in alignment with your tuition payment schedule, lump sum, or installments. Your child eats as much as he or she would like from the menu of offerings for one price.
can i come eat with my child?
You are always welcome to join your child for lunch. All visitors must sign in at the front office.
school nurse Our School Nurse is Sarah Beckmann; she works full time during the school day. Nurse Beckmann coordinates all required health and immunization forms and communicates regularly with parents regarding student-specific and school-wide health. The school uses Magnus Health for collection of all medical information as well as a variety of other forms. All information about your student’s health records will be shared through our summer correspondence.

The school uses several methods for communicating with parents:
1. parent portal:
At St. Mark’s, online portals are used to assign homework and to encourage community and discussion. All parents have a portal set up and are asked to check the portals regularly for homework, necessary forms, and important updates. Middle school students also have student portals, which will hold assignments, lessons, and information. By managing their own homework, our middle school students will learn responsibility and accountability. Once logged into the portal, you will also be able to access our Student Information System and Magnus Health, our health software, where all forms, releases and student information can be accessed and updated by our families. Our summer communication will include instructions for accessing the Parent Portal.
2. weekly st. mark’s e-news:
Each Friday, the school sends a weekly email with a message from Headmaster, a message from the Division Heads, school news, and a calendar of next week’s events. Other updates are emailed as needed. All parents are included in the email distribution list. If you do not receiving emails from St. Mark’s over the summer, please contact Jean Marie Howrd, our Director of Communication and Marketing, at jhoward@stmes.org.

communication from the school
3. parent guild bulletin:
Most Tuesdays, the Parent Guild sends an email from our Parent Guild, sharing upcoming Parent Guild Events and volunteer needs. All parents are included in the email distribution lists for this message.

the parent guild The mission of the St. Mark’s Parent Guild is to support community spirit, create meaningful events and programs for our children, and promote the school in the greater surrounding community. The Parent Guild is our version of the PTA. They are a self-supporting organization, with fundraisers generating revenue for their activities. As a parent of St. Mark’s, you are automatically a member of the Parent Guild and invited to join both meetings and committees. Meetings are the normally held first Wednesday of every month in Hauser Hall at 7:45 AM and 8:15 AM. Participating in The Parent Guild is an excellent way to engage in the St. Mark’s community. Volunteer opportunities provide you with connecting points throughout the school and create a stronger partnership between school and family.

field trips
26
Off campus field trips typically begin in 1st Grade. Parents will be notified in advance of any planned field trip. Overnight field trips begin in 4th grade.
spirit teams
Each student is assigned to either the Red Spirit Team or the Blue Spirit Team to be kept throughout the student’s life at St. Mark’s. During the school year, students will be asked to wear their team spirit shirt, which can be purchased at Lands’ End. St. Mark’s will host several spirit team competitions; each team will earn points throughout the year, with the winner announced at the end of the school year. Our all school Field Day, held in the spring, is an annual event that boosts our school spirit. Students in the same household will be kept on the same spirit team to prevent any “houses divided!” Your spirit team designation will be shared with you through your parent portal.
culture of giving at st. mark’s The tradition of fundraising in independent schools is a necessary and important one. We are a 501C3 nonprofit organization, and the additional funds we raise through the Development Office support our mission and advance our school. Through growing resources and fiscal responsibility, the basic operating budget of St. Mark’s is covered by tuition dollars. Fundraising efforts help us go above and beyond the standard classroom and create the entirety of the St. Mark’s experience.
the annual fund
Our theme for the Annual Fund is “Every Family, Every Year,” and we invite all families to contribute in the fall. In previous years we have reached as high 92% parent participation in the fund. We hope to reach new heights this year with your help!
gala and ungala
The annual spring gala to support St. Mark’s Episcopal School is a time-honored tradition. We have a system established where we alternate from a casual UnGala year to a traditional formal affair every other year. We invite all parents to join us this spring for our Gala, which will be a more formal event held on at a hotel in the spring. Proceeds from the St. Mark’s Gala or UnGala benefit special projects around campus. Funds from previous events have been earmarked for things like new turf, facility upgrades, keeping our campus secure, professional development, and our ongoing commitment to improving technology.
join us!
Across all of our programs, we benefit from the generous support of parents, grandparents, alumni families, and foundations. We are sincerely grateful for all of our donor support at St. Mark’s. It is reflected in what we do and who we serve.
the insider’s guide to st. mark’s | 2019-2020
The Annual Fund is the most important fundraising initiative of the year. This condensed campaign, occuring every fall from September 1 through November 30, provides funding for: • Enhanced professional development for teachers • New technology in classrooms • Refreshed and enriched curriculum materials • Improvements to our campus and facilities

breakfast with santa
28
A yearly event open to all St. Mark’s families that includes photos with Santa, holiday activities and breakfast. This year’s event will be held on a Saturday in December.
cocktails and conversations
An opportunity for families in each grade level to attend a “town hall” event in the fall, hosted by the Headmaster, which provides a wonderful opportunity to interact with other families and learn more about the future of St. Mark’s School.
dads & donuts
Several times a year, the Parent Guild hosts a breakfast for dads and students in Hauser Hall.
field day
A school-wide day of games, scavenger hunts, and school spirit! Field Day is held in the spring each year.
gala socials
Parent-hosted socials held throughout the year, which usually have a reservation or ticket charge, and those proceeds go directly to the school to benefit the yearly auction and Gala. These events are a great way to meet other families and support our school!
