Silver Ball gala honours the “brave hearts” On November 4, more than 750 guests enjoyed an immersive Celtic experience at the Silver Ball, presented by Scotiabank, and helped raise $1 million net to support Providence’s most urgent needs. This year’s theme was Courage and Confidence: A Celtic Calling in honour of the thousands of ‘brave hearts’ – patients, residents and clients – who pass through our doors every year. With an array of Celtic entertainment, including performances by Ireland’s leading classical composer Odhrán Ó Casaide and Universal Music artist Sibéal Ni Chasaide, we treated guests to a beautiful evening while raising awareness and funds to support better, higher quality care. Kicking off the holiday season at St. Joe’s On November 29 we were excited to officially welcome the holidays to St. Joe’s with our annual Share Your Light festival. This event is one of our favourites – it allows us to celebrate with our community members who join us for live entertainment, games, treats, photos with Santa and to see our lights turn on for the first time this season. Each light represents a gift made to St. Joe’s – we would not be able to do what we do without the support of our incredible community. One donor, Jorge Sousa, had a powerful reason for giving to St. Joe’s this holiday season. “St. Joe’s and their staff gave me a second chance at life,” he said. “They are the guardian angels that sit by my side, my family and I will never be able to thank them enough for everything they have and continue to do to make our community a healthier, better place.” Thank you to Jorge and to all of you who choose to give to St. Joe’s at this time of year. New Angel Ball record set St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation raised a record $4 million net at its Angel Ball on Oct. 21 – the final gift of Inspire 2018, its most successful fundraising campaign ever. Proceeds from the ball will go specifically to completing the renovation of the Slaight Family Emergency Department, which treats some of the most critically ill and injured patients in the city and the region. For me, the holidays are about family, friends and being grateful for the many blessings as Canadians we’re able to enjoy. This Christmas, as I think about what I am particularly thankful for, I can’t help but reflect on the many opportunities health care has afforded me. As a young doctor starting at St. Michael’s Hospital in 1982, I was full of hope – an optimism that I could make a difference for my patients, their families and for the advancement of medicine. When I consider this will be my last holiday message as a hospital president and CEO, I still hold that hopeful enthusiasm about the future. The change we have seen in health care in the last decade has been outstanding. Medical advances that hold disease at bay; new technology and devices that help treat more patients as clinicians perform procedures in a minimally invasive way; investments in education and research that are building momentum to better care and new discoveries; and for our patients, an engagement approach that puts them in the circle of care with clinicians, managing and directing their health needs together. All these and more should give us all hope. And I also have hope for our new network. Built on the foundation of some incredibly capable and determined women, the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph is an ever-present reminder of the important mission we all need to keep alive – a mission of treating people at their most vulnerable time, during disadvantage and often despair, and showing them that everyone is worthy of compassion, human dignity and access to quality health care. As we approach this holiday season, I hope you will be thankful for the blessings in your life and for the opportunity we all have to continue the Sisters’ legacy.
