Six reasons to visit Switzerland. Perfect location Switzerland is centrally located in the heart of Europe, bordering France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. Daily flights are available ex Australia and New Zealand to Zürich and Geneva with seamless connections to the Swiss Travel System and European high-speed rail network.
Swiss transportation A fully integrated transport system with one ticket, the Swiss Travel Pass gives you access to all city public transportation including trains, buses and boats. Discounts on private railways and cable cars are also available. Children under the age of 16 travel for free with an accompanying adult travelling with a Swiss Travel Pass.
Culture and tradition Four official languages and numerous local dialects result in a distinctive Swiss cultural experience unlike anywhere else. Impressive architecture from times of the Romans; modern, contemporary art and internationally renowned events round out every trip.
Grand Tour of Switzerland & Grand Train Tour of Switzerland The Grand Tour of Switzerland combines the highlights of Switzerland in one single journey. It leads visitors to tourist attractions via the country’s most beautiful scenic roads. This tour provides a concentrated insight into Switzerland, with exquisite scenic views and cultural jewels. The Grand Train Tour is a seamless travel experience through scenic Switzerland. It represents the very best of Swiss public transport, highlights top excursion attractions, and can be enjoyed all year round.
Family-friendly Switzerland has 31 designated KidsHotels, which must meet certain requirements: comfortable family rooms, children’s menus, free drinks, cots, highchairs and more. Each one also offers professional childcare services and fun-filled activities.
Cities and nature Swiss cities are steeped in history, often featuring old medieval centres, a café culture and streets laced with local shops. A day’s mountain excursion is always possible from any Swiss city, often less than a 30-minute train ride away.

Good to know. Best time of year to travel
Currency
January and March are good months for winter holidays, avoiding the main European school holiday month of February. For a summer holiday, travel in June, September or October to avoid the July–August high season. For city breaks any time throughout the year is good.
The currency is the Swiss franc. Credit cards are accepted in most places and you can withdraw money from most banks.
Affordable Switzerland Switzerland is well known for its high quality standards and outstanding service culture. Prices might seem high at a first glance but the value for money is excellent. The cost of eating out varies depending on location, the quality of the restaurant and the number of courses.
Budget traveller In restaurants, try the dish option of the day, which is usually cheaper than the standard main dish; and choose a local carafe wine instead of a bottled wine. Migros and Coop supermarkets also have high-quality in-house restaurants serving anything from breakfast to dinners. For breakfast or lunch, visit any of the numerous bakers for fresh rolls, sandwiches and salads.
Road tolls Most roads in Switzerland are free to use. To drive on Swiss motorways you must display a “vignette” sticker (autobahn.ch). Cars hired in Switzerland have the vignette prepaid. If you hire a car elsewhere you can buy a vignette at the border or any Swiss post office.
Shop opening hours Shops generally open for longer hours in the cities, remaining opened for seven days at larger railway stations and the airport. Otherwise, they are open Mondays–Fridays from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm, until 4 pm on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. Thursday night is late-night shopping with shops opened till 8 pm. However, check before you head out for a shopping experience as shops can be closed due to local public holidays.
Tipping A service charge is normally included in hotel and restaurant bills as well as taxi fares. An extra tip is not necessary, but of course always appreciated.
Value-added tax The VAT on purchased goods is already included in the sales price. Non-Swiss visitors are entitled to reclaim VAT. For more information go to MySwitzerland.com/en-ch/tax-free-shopping

Things not to miss.
Prättigau, Graubünden
Take a hike
Taste Swiss wine
Switzerland is a Mecca for hikers of all ages and abilities. Make sure you check out the Swiss National Park in Graubünden.
Switzerland produces wine throughout the country, so make sure you taste some while you are there. Only 2% of Swiss wines get exported, so it is a real local treat.
Learn some language Switzerland packs a linguistic punch for a country its size. Learn German, French, Italian or Romansch without ever having to leave Switzerland.
Mingle with the Swiss at local festivals Switzerland has events all year round from flag throwing and carnivals to jazz festivals and traditional ceremonies. Join in and meet some locals to learn more about the Swiss people.
Ride the public transport system Most of the Swiss trains are scenic, so be sure to use the efficient, ultra-modern and fully integrated Swiss public transport system everywhere you go.
Check out some local peaks No visit to Switzerland is complete without a visit to the Jungfraujoch, Pilatus or the Matterhorn. Be sure to check where your closest peak is, as chances are, you are never further than an hour’s train ride away. The mountains would usually be viewable from your hotel.
Don’t miss out on some local culture Visit the many museums to see the old and contemporary in Zürich, Bern, Lucerne and Geneva, and check out the hidden gem of Winterthur, home to some very fine art collections.

Swiss cities. There is no such thing as a typical Swiss city as each city is unique. What they share, however, is the element of authenticity, their short proximity to nature and a special European atmosphere. The historical heritage of many Swiss cities dates back hundreds of years. With car-free centres, you can explore them freely at your own pace, stopping at the many cafés for some people-watching or you can use the traveller-friendly public transport system.

Bern is the capital of Switzerland. The Swiss Pass includes travelling on the public transport system of Switzerland, which also includes boats and free entrance to more than 470 museums. Many cities also have their own city cards, giving you access to public transport, museums and other advantages.
Switzerland has four national languages and numerous dialects which you can hear in many of the Swiss cities. ■■

Swiss summer. Once an essential stop on every Grand Tour, many mountaineers have conquered the Matterhorn and the Eiger. Enjoy a visit to the new Rigi Spa whilst looking at the mountains or ride the open-deck cable car to the Stanserhorn. The more active will find well-marked cycle and walking trails with many local restaurants on the way for a well-deserved glass of local wine or beer. Swiss peaks are accessible to visitors via cable cars or mountain trains for the way up, with various options available for the journey back down, including the Devil’s Bike Trail. The summer period is from June to September with temperatures ranging between 25 and 30 degrees. High season is July and August, the period of the Swiss and European school holidays. Switzerland has 60,000 kilometres of some of the most scenic hiking trails in the world. These trails are consistently and clearly marked nationwide. There are three types of trails in Switzerland: hiking paths, mountain paths and alpine paths.

Around 6% of Europe’s fresh water flows through Switzerland, making swimming in one of the country’s many lakes a great experience. Locals in Zürich, Geneva, Bern, Basel, Lucerne and many others take a refreshing dip during their lunch break or after work. It is clean and anyone can join in. Take your kids to any of the public swimming pools and mingle with the locals. They are great value for money and have cafés and restaurants too. Take any Swiss peak and the scenic trains or cable cars to the top and hire a trotti bike or bike at the top and make your way down, where you can hand the bikes back. Don’t miss a lake cruise on any of the countless lakes across Switzerland. Enjoy the cruise with a glass of local wine or join a breakfast, lunch or dinner cruise. Many lakes also offer the old-fashioned steamers during the peak summer season.

Lake Geneva Region. Blue water, white mountains The beautiful Lake Geneva Region takes in the “Olympic capital”, Lausanne, and the famously scenic Montreux Riviera. Both offer a wealth of accommodation and endless opportunities for exploring. Lausanne enjoys a stunningly picturesque setting, built on three hills, surrounded by vineyard-covered slopes, with Lake Geneva at its
feet. Rising impressively from the French lakeshore opposite Lausanne are the purple peaks of the Savoy Alps. Lausanne’s cobbled Old Town is full of charm, due to being largely carfree. Discover the small alleyways with cafés and boutiques lining the medieval city centre. Along the shore from Lausanne, the town of Montreux nestles in a sheltered Lake Geneva bay, surrounded by the UNESCO World Heritage Lavaux vineyards and set against the breathtaking backdrop of the snow-covered Alps.
