Lugano is the largest city in the Ticino, but also the city of parks, flower gardens, villas and culture, as well as Switzerland's third largest financial centre and an important conference centre. With its typically Mediterranean atmosphere, Lugano offers all the advantages of a cosmopolitan city while maintaining its spirit of a small town on a human scale. The traffic-free historic city centre, the numerous buildings in Lombardy style, its exclusive museums, the mountains, the lake and a packed calendar of events all encourage visitors to see the sights, soak up the atmosphere — and enjoy “dolce far niente”.

Lugano è la città più grande del Ticino, ma anche dei parchi, dei giardini fioriti, delle ville e della cultura, oltre che il terzo polo finanziario e un importante centro di congressi per la Svizzera. Lugano is of ancient origins. There are sure traces of the small lake and rural borough dating back to the 10th century. It was the object of continuous ducal disputes (Como and Milan) and then Lugano and its Pievi became a Swiss dominion in 1513, a dominion that lasted until 1798, a year in which, under the pressure of the great European upheavals, it asked and obtained independence, thus becoming part of the Swiss Confederation.

Lugano ha origini antiche. Le prime tracce sicure dell’esistenza di una comunità sono testimoniate in un documento che risale all’anno 875 che parla di “Sancti Laurentii in Luano”. Oggetto di continue contese ducali (Como e Milano), Lugano e le sue Pievi passano sotto il dominio degli svizzeri nel 1513 Lugano che si perpetua fino al 1798 anno in cui, sotto la spinta dei grandi rivolgimenti europei, chiede ed ottiene l’Indipendenza entrando a far parte della Confederazione Svizzera.

Die Anfänge Luganos gehen weit zurück. Erste sichere Spuren des kleinen Fischer- und Bauerndorfs stammen aus dem 10. Jahrhundert. Das von den Herzogen von Mailand und Como immer wieder umstrittene Lugano und seine Pfarrgemeinden ging 1513 in Schweizer Herrschaft über, bis es 1798, im Sog der europäischen Umbrüche, die Unabhängigkeit erhielt und Teil der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft wurde.

Les origines de Lugano sont très anciennes. On trouve des traces de ce petit village lacustre et rural dès le Xe siècle. Objet de querelles ducales (Côme et Milan) incessantes, Lugano et ses paroisses passèrent sous domination suisse en 1513. Il en sera ainsi jusqu’en 1798, date à laquelle, sous l’influence des grands bouleversements européens, Lugano demande et obtient son indépendance et entre dans la Confédération Helvétique.

1 LAGO DI LUGANO

Lake Lugano – known locally as ‘Lake Ceresio’ – is a relatively small natural basin situated on the border between Italy and Switzerland. In the distant past, it was connected to Lake Como. Hugged by green mountains that are reflected in the water and bordered by particularly beautiful beaches, it brings to mind the fjords of northern Europe, but with a mild climate and picture-perfect, clear skies.

Il Lago Ceresio, chiamato anche Lago di Lugano, è un bacino naturale che si trova in territorio italo/svizzero e che in tempi remoti era collegato con il Lago di Como. Contornato come in un abbraccio di montagne verdi che si riflettono nell’acqua e di lidi particolarmente apprezzati, ricorda un po’ i fiordi del nord Europa, ma con un clima mite e dei cieli tersi da cartolina.

Der Ceresio See, auch Luganer See gennant, ist ein relativ kleines Naturbecken. Es liegt im Grenzgebiet zwischen der Schweiz und Italien und war ganz früher einmal mit dem Comer See verbunden. Der See ist umgeben von grünen Bergen, die sich im Wasser widerspiegeln, und von besonders schönen Stränden. Den Unterschied machen hier jedoch das milde Klima und der Postkartenhimmel.

Partagé par l’Italie et la Suisse, le lac de Lugano (où Lac de Ceresio) est un bassin naturel relativement petit, qui était autrefois relié au lac de Côme. Enchâssé par des montagnes verdoyantes se reflétant dans ses eaux et des plages très prisées, il est ponctué de petits villages aux maisons colorées, de filets de pêche et du bruit des vaguelettes se brisant sur la rive.

2 LAC LUGANO ARTE E CULTURA

The city of Lugano’s arts centre and a cultural beacon for Switzerland, LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura expresses Lugano’s identity as a cultural hub where North encounters South Europe. Overlooking the lake, this atmospheric, architectural marvel plays host to a rich calendar of shows and events, musical seasons and theatre and dance festivals, together with a variety of cultural initiatives and a packed programme of activities for youngsters and families alike.

Centro culturale della città di Lugano. Oggi riferimento culturale della Svizzera, LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura esprime l’identità di Lugano quale crocevia culturale fra il nord e il sud dell’Europa. All’interno della suggestiva struttura architettonica affacciata sul lago, trova spazio una ricca programmazione di mostre ed eventi, stagioni musicali, rassegne di teatro e danza, insieme a una varietà di iniziative culturali e un folto programma di attività per i giovani e le famiglie.

Das Kunst- und Kulturzentrum Lugano ist heute schweizweit ein kultureller Bezugspunkt. Das LAC ist Ausdruck der Identität der Stadt Lugano in ihrer Rolle als kultureller Knotenpunkt zwischen Nord- und Südeuropa. Die Räumlichkeiten des eindrücklichen Baus am See sind Schauplatz zahlreicher Ausstellungen und Events, Konzertreihen, Theater- und Tanzfestivals. Hinzu kommt ein reichhaltiges Programm an Kulturinitiativen sowie an Aktivitäten für Jugendliche und Familien.

Aujourd’hui référence culturelle de la Suisse, le LAC – Lugano Arte e Cultura – exprime l’identité de Lugano en tant que carrefour culturel entre le nord et le sud de l’Europe. Un riche programme d’expositions, manifestations, saisons musicales, théâtrales et de danse, ainsi qu’une grande variété d’initiatives culturelles et des activités pour les jeunes et les familles, trouvent place au sein de la structure architecturale qui fait face au lac.

3 VIA NASSA

Via Nassa is one of Lugano’s historical streets – its particular and sophisticated shops will accompany you in your shopping. Under the 270 meter long, ancient city porticoes on the lakeshore, there are many different kinds of shops: jewellery, clothing, gastronomy and antique shops are just some of the many, without forgetting a few department stores as well.

Via Nassa, “la via dello shopping” di Lugano per eccellenza, vi accompagna durante i vostri acquisti con un'atmosfera elegante e raffinata. Nei 270 metri di antichi portici lungo il lago è possibile trovare negozi di vario genere, dalle gioiellerie all’abbigliamento, dalla gastronomia ai negozi di antichità, senza dimenticare i centri commerciali.

Die Via Nassa liegt im alten Stadtkern von Lugano und besticht durch ihre besonderen Geschäfte und Boutiquen. Unter den 270 Meter langen Lauben entlang der Seepromenade sind Geschäfte aller Art untergebracht: vom Juwelier über die Kleiderboutique und den Traiteur bis zum Antiquariat und natürlich dem Warenhaus.

Sous les 270 mètres d’arcades le long du lac, on trouve des boutiques de toutes sortes, de la bijouterie à l’habillement, de la gastronomie aux antiquités sans oublier les grands magasins.

4 PARCO CIANI

Overlooking the lake and, with an area of 63,000 m², this is the green heart of the city of Lugano. The paths meander amongst beautiful flower beds, adorned with statues and fountains, winding through well-kept English style lawns.

Affacciato sul lago, con i suoi 63’000 metri quadrati di superficie costituisce il polmone verde della città; i suoi vialetti si snodano tra le belle aiuole fiorite, abbellite da statue e fontane, e si insinuano tra i curatissimi prati all’inglese.

Mit einer Fläche von 63`000 Quadratmetern ist der am See gelegene Park die grüne Lunge der Stadt. Die Wege winden sich durch prächtige Blumenbeete, gesäumt von Statuen und Springbrunnen, und eingefasst in einem sehr gepflegten Englischen Rasen.

Avec ses 63 000 mètres carrés donnant sur le lac, le Parco Ciani est le poumon vert de la ville de Lugano ; ses chemins se déploient à travers des parterres de fleurs, à l’ombre d’arbres centenaires, agrémentés de statues et de fontaines et bordés ça et là de pelouses à l’anglaise.

5 PALAZZO CIVICO

The building (built between 1840 and 1844 in the neo-classical style) is nowadays the Lugano Town Hall. In the atrium between the entrance and the court are placed 5 statues: Giocondo Albertolli, neo-classic architect; opposite Father Francesco Soave, writer; the architect and engineer Domenico Fontana who had the famous obelisk in San Pietro Square built in Rome; the Bishop Giuseppe Maria Luvini, a renowned preacher, the work of the sculptor Vincenzo Vela as the imposing Spartacus.

L’edificio attualmente è il Municipio, costruito tra il 1840 e il 1844 in stile neoclassico. Nell’atrio tra l’entrata ed il cortile sono collocate 5 statue: Giocondo Albertolli, architetto del periodo neoclassico; di fronte Padre Francesco Soave, scrittore; l’architetto e ingegnere Domenico Fontana che fece erigere il famoso obelisco in Piazza San Pietro a Roma; il Vescovo Giuseppe Maria Luvini, celebre predicatore, opera di Vincenzo Vela così come l’imponente Spartaco.

Das Gebäude ist das Rathaus. Es wurde zwischen 1840 und 1844 im Neoklassischen Stil gebaut. Im Atrium zwischen dem Eingang und dem Hof stehen 5 Statuen: Giocondo Albertolli, Architekt der neoklassischen Periode; gegenüber sehen wir Padre Francesco Soave, Schriftsteller; Architekt und Ingenieur Domenico Fontana, der den berühmten Obelisk auf Piazza San Pietro in Rom errichtet hat; Bischof Giuseppe Maria Luvini, berühmter Prediger, ein Werk von Vincenzo Vela wie der imposante Spartaco.

La Mairie a été bâtie entre 1840 et 1844 comme palais municipal. Le porche entre l’entrée et la cour abrite cinq statues : Giocando Albertolli, architecte de la période néo-classique ; en face Padre Francesco Soave, écrivain ; l’architecte et ingénieur Domenico Fontana qui a érigé le fameux obélisque de la Piazza San Pietro à Rome ; L’Evêque Giuseppe Maria Luvini, célèbre prédicateur, œuvre de Vincenzo Vela comme l’imposant Spartaco.

6 PIAZZA DELLA RIFORMA

Piazza della Riforma is the main square of the city of Lugano. During the summer, different events take place there. Its name derives from the constitutional reform of 1830.

Piazza della Riforma è il salotto della città. Durante l’estate vi si svolgono diverse manifestazioni. Deve il suo nome alla riforma costituzionale del 1830.

Piazza della Riforma ist das Zentrum des öffentlichen Lebens. Während des Sommers finden verschiedene Veranstaltungen auf dem Platz statt. Der Name stammt aus der konstitutionellen Revolution von 1830.

Piazza della Riforma est le salon de la ville. Pendant la saison touristique on y organise beaucoup de manifestations. Son nom dérive de la réforme de 1830.

7 CHIESA SANTA MARIA DEGLI ANGELI

The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is the most important church of Lugano. It contains the famous Renaissance fresco of the Passion and the Crucifixion by the Italian artist Bernardino Luini, being the most important example of Lombard Renaissance in Switzerland.

La Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli è la chiesa più importante della Città e accoglie il celebre affresco rinascimentale della Passione e della Crocifissione di Cristo dell’artista italiano Bernardino Luini, rappresentando la più importante testimonianza del Rinascimento lombardo in Svizzera.

Die Kirche Santa Maria degli Angeli ist die bedeutendste Kirche von Lugano. Sie enthält das berühmte Renaissance-Fresko der Passion und die Kreuzigung Christi vom italienischen Künstler Bernardino Luini. Dieses Fresko ist ein Meisterwerk von der Lombard Renaissance in der Schweiz.

L'église de Santa Maria degli Angeli est l'église la plus importante de Lugano. Elle contient la célèbre fresque de la Renaissance de la Passion et de la Crucifixion du Christ par l'artiste italien Bernardino Luini, le témoignage le plus important de la Renaissance lombarde en Suisse.

8 CATTEDRALE SAN LORENZO

With a protomedieval foundation, the church was denominated as a parish already in 818. The flying facade, erected in 1500/1517, is one of the Lombardian Renaissance’s masterpieces. Inside there are many frescoes and valuable Baroque decorations.

Di fondazione sicuramente protomedievale, la chiesa venne denominata parrocchiale già nel 818. La facciata a vento, eretta negli anni 1500/1517, costituisce uno dei capolavori del rinascimento lombardo. All'interno numerosi affreschi e preziosi addobbi barocchi.

Die Kirche wurde im Frühmittelalter errichtet und wurde im Jahre 818 zur Pfarrkirche. Die Wetterfassade, die in den Jahren 1500/1517 errichtet wurde, ist eines der Meisterwerke der lombardischen Renaissance. Im Innern der Kathedrale befinden sich zahlreiche Fresken und wertvolle barocke Ausstattungen.

La façade de 1517 est en style Renaissance et présente deux ordres de pilastres et est ornée de trois portails entourés de panneaux à bas-reliefs représentant Salomon, David et les quatre Evangélistes. À l’intérieur de nombreuses fresques et précieux décorations baroques.

Rund um Lugano liegen zahlreiche Dörfer zwischen Seeufer und Berghängen verstreut. Einige sind leicht zu finden, andere liegen etwas abseits. Elegante Lauben, Kirchen mit wunderschönen Fresken, leidenschaftliche Handwerker und malerische Gassen: jedes Dorf ist einmalig und verzaubert durch seine Authentizität.

Lugano est entourée de nombreux villages disséminés sur les rives du lac et les flancs des montagnes. Certains bien cachés et d’autres plus faciles à trouver. The area offers an infinite number of hiking and mountain bike trails. There are also several restaurants and grottos with panoramic terraces.

MIGLIEGLIA Miglieglia is located on the slopes of Monte Lema. From the summit you can enjoy one of the most majestic views of Ticino, which extends on one side to the Lake Lugano and on the other from the Lake Maggiore to the peaks of the Alps, among which Monte Rosa stands out.

In prossimità della Stazione ferroviaria di Lugano, questo parco di 21’000 m2 è caratterizzato da ampi viali che si snodano lungo un pendio e da dove si può ammirare il Golfo di Lugano contornato dalle montagne.

This delightful park was designed in “Liberty Style” in 1931 and built at the same time as the Villa Heleneum. The beautiful garden surrounds the building and offer an amazing variety of tropical and subtropical plants and flowers.

Il Parco dell’Heleneum venne realizzato in puro stile “Liberty” nel 1931 contemporaneamente alla costruzione dell’adiacente Villa Heleneum. L’ampio giardino che circonda l’edificio offre una straordinaria varietà di piante e fiori subtropicali e tropicali.

Der in Castagnola am Ufer des Luganersees gelegene Park wurde 1931 im reinen Jugendstil angelegt, gleichzeitig mit dem Bau der Villa Heleneum. Im grossen Garten, rund um das Gebäude, gedeihen zahlreiche subtropische und tropische Pflanzen.

Its paths and steep flights of stairs meander through groves of olives trees, cypresses, laurels and myrtles: all of them are typical of the Mediterranean woodlands and have become well acclimatised in Lugano thanks to its mild climate.

I suoi sentieri e le sue ripide scalette si inerpicano attraverso gli ulivi, i cipressi, gli allori e i mirti, tutte specie tipiche della macchia mediterranea che si sono ben ambientate a Lugano grazie al suo clima mite.

Seine Wege und steilen Treppchen winden sich zwischen Olivenbäumen, Zypressen, Lorbeerbäumen und Myrten – typische Bäume des Mittelmeerraums, die Dank des milden Klimas in Lugano hier gut gedeihen.

Ses sentiers et ses petits escaliers abrupts grimpent parmi les oliviers, les cyprès, les lauriers et les myrtes, des espèces typiques de la flore méditerranéenne qui se sont bien adaptées au climat doux de Lugano.

The Belvedere Garden is an oasis of beauty and peace in the heart of Lugano. The colorful flower-bedecked terrace is located in the middle of Lugano’s gorgeous lakeside promenade, which leads from the entrance of the Parco Ciani to Paradiso.

Il Giardino Belvedere è un luogo delizioso che offre un’oasi di bellezza e pace nel cuore di Lugano. L’isola dai fiori colorati si trova a metà della passeggiata sul lungolago, che conduce dall’ingresso del Parco Ciani a Paradiso.

Der Belvedere-Garten ist ein entzückender Ort, der im Herzen von Lugano eine Oase des Friedens bietet. Die farbenprächtige Blumeninsel befindet sich in der Mitte der Uferpromenade, die von dem Eingang des Parco Ciani nach Paradiso führt.

Over 940 kilometres of trails criss-cross our region. For trekkers, the area surrounding the City of Lugano is hikers’ heaven! Diverse trails wind their way through ever-changing landscapes along fabulous routes, some of which are easy whilst others are more challenging – but always appealing and catering to all levels. Though each one is different, what they all have in common are the awe-inspiring views.

Sono oltre 940 i chilometri di sentieri che solcano la nostra regione. Per gli escursionisti, il territorio che circonda la città di Lugano rappresenta quindi un vero e proprio paradiso dell’hiking! L’eterogeneità delle gite, che si snodano lungo tracciati semplici o impegnativi e in contesti paesaggistici di volta in volta diversi tra loro, accontenta chiunque. Ma al di là della varietà, tutti i percorsi hanno anche un denominatore comune: il panorama stupendo.

From Paradiso with the Monte San Salvatore funicular railway you can reach the top of the “Pan di Zucchero” of Switzerland, from where you can enjoy a splendid 360° view of the lake of Lugano or walk along a path. On the summit you will also find a museum, a church and a restaurant.

Da Paradiso con la Funicolare Monte San Salvatore si raggiunge la vetta del “Pan di Zucchero” svizzero, da cui godere di splendidi panorami sul Ceresio con una vista a 360° oppure incamminarsi per un sentiero. In vetta si trovano anche un museo, una chiesa e un ristorante.

Von Paradiso aus erreicht man mit der Standseilbahn Monte San Salvatore den Gipfel, der auch der “Zuckerhut” der Schweiz genannt wird, von dort aus man eine herrliche 360° Aussicht auf den Luganersee geniessen kann. From Miglieglia by cable car you can reach the hut and the astronomical observatory, from where hiking and mountain biking trails start on the ridge to the mountain and with a view as far as Milan, the valleys of the Luino area, Lake Maggiore, the Graubünden and Bernese Alps and the peaks of the Valais.

Von Miglieglia aus erreicht man mit der Seilbahn das Berghaus Monte Lema und die Sternwarte, von dort beginnen auch die Wander- und Mountainbike- Höhenwege mit wunderbarer Aussicht bis nach Mailand, in die Täler von Luino, an den Lago Maggiore, sowie in die Bündner- Berner- und Walliser Alpen.

Lugano is extremely easy to reach with several means of public and private transportation. Located in a strategic geographic position on the main railand motorway network, Lugano makes a wide range of very important alpine passes along the South–North axis easily accessible; these include: the Novena, the San Gottardo, the Lucomagno, the San Bernardino, the Spluga and the Maloia passes. In less than two hours from Lugano it is also possible to discover new territories: from the Ticinese treasures to the most typical cities of central Switzerland, to some of the most important art cities in northern Italy.

Every visitor receives a free “Ticino Ticket” upon checking-in to their hotels, youth hostels and camping establishment, valid for the duration of their stay. In addition to the regular public transportation system of the Community Arcobaleno, there will be several cable car/funicular companies and other tourist attractions that will offer a discount to the “Ticino Ticket” holders.
