Leadership Stockton by: Timm Quinn
Leadership Stockton Class Picks Community Project During Annual Retreat The Leadership Stockton Class of 2009 chose their class community project at September’s overnight retreat at Camp Lodestar in Wilseyville. Peter Johnson (LS ‘01 and LSAA President) started the retreat with a presentation on management versus leadership, board member basics, and how to be an impact board member. Then the Class learned fun facts about each other with “Little Known Fact Bingo”. And later got a lesson and exercise covering the finer points of Voting vs. Consensus and how they as a Class will determine how to choose their community project. The afternoon brought presentations on the two potential community projects. After the presentations the Class was free for the evening but this Class was so excited they chose their project before dinner and started planning, a new Leadership Stockton record. The morning light brought a hearty breakfast followed by the completion of their leadership, subcommittees, action plan, and timeline for their project.
Business Records Management The Class of 2010 has chosen help the Women’s Center of San Joaquin by cleaning and erecting a play area in the overgrown yard at the Women’s Center DAWN Shelter. They will also be implementing a recycling program and recycling curriculum at Aspire Langston Hughes Academy. To learn more, visit the Class’s project website at www.LeadershipStockton2010.org. It will come as no surprise that Judge Callahan’s name was one of a select group considered in the recent vetting process to replace Justice David Souter in the United States Supreme Court. Building a memorable legacy as judge, lecturer, instructor, wife, mother and proud Latina, Judge Connie Callahan: Stockton’s 2009 ATHENA Award recipient.
Jump-starting her success At an age when many young adults are still pondering which career path they should follow, Mimi Nguyen, the 2009 ATHENA Young Professional leadership Award winner, had sharply-defined goals: she had already written and received a $2.2 million dollar grant for the building of the City of Stockton’s Teen Center.
It may be the range of awards that Judge Callahan has received that best reflects a leadership style that values community service.
This achievement set her well on her way to establishing a pattern of community service that

Leading the Way
Volunteerism was an early habit for Nguyen Trained in Taekwondo, she earned her Girl Scout Gold Award by teaching free workshops that helped women and girls feel more confident and safe in their surroundings. These days Nguyen can be found volunteer coaching underprivileged children for Stockton Gymnastics. A first generation American who knows firsthand the struggles of immigrants to assimilate in American society, Nguyen is in demand as a motivational speaker. She has been invited to be a keynote speaker at the Asian Pacific Islander Youth Summit, Youth in Government Day as well as the Japanese American Youth Scholarship Luncheon.
Currently the Economic Development Director and the Human Resource Director for the Downtown Stockton Alliance, Nguyen is also a very visible business leader, representing the interests of one thousand business and property owners. While she was the Alliance’s Events Coordinator, she completely reorganized the Farmer’s Market and led the effort to obtain its Market Certification. Her vision to make the Market a magnet for community spirit has been validated with the enthusiastic public response to such crowd-pleasing events as an Elvis Look-A-Like and salsa contests, and a nutrition fair. Nguyen is also credited with the success of the Downtown Cinema Plaza music series that attracts a large and diverse following.
