Granted this is due to the fact that we are a fairly large city and there are definitely tremendous needs. However, I also think

it’s about our business communities’ tradition of serving others with both time and money. This may be no surprise to those who have been here for many years, or who work in the not-for-profit community service sector. To a newbie like me though, it’s been impressive to watch companies and individuals step up and meet the needs of our fellow citizens. You may even share my assertion that the greater Stockton area has some of the most philanthropic people and organizations in the country. Leadership Stockton is a 34 year program of Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce and has an impressive history of serving the not-for-profits in our area.

I hope you enjoy reading more about the program and its’ good works. Better yet, participate yourself or invest in someone within your business to join the Leadership Stockton class of 2015-2016. We’d love to have you! The Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce believes there is definite synergy between businesses and not-for-profit community service agencies. This year our board of directors created a task force to focus on enhancing membership benefits for not-for-profit community service agencies. We are currently vetting the final

“They’re already proven leaders, and now they can learn where else they can make their mark,” Prokop said. But perhaps most importantly, the program forces students to get their feet wet. June 12. Tuition is $900, and scholarships are available.

For example, the 2013 class overhauled the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless and the Gospel Center Rescue Mission, redecorating, painting, and installing flooring. A whopping $12,623 went into the renovation, creating an environment that gives the homeless warmth, security, and the comforts of home. Uyen Do, Chief Development Officer at the Gospel Center Rescue Mission, described the project as having a “huge impact” on the Center. As a Leadership Stockton Class of 2008 graduate, she knew how difficult the project was to accomplish. “I knew how hard it was,” Do said, “what they had to do to be able to fundraise for the material, the planning that it took to get it done.” The class of 2011 also devoted their time to the less fortunate, assisting the Stockton Emergency Food Bank and the Transitional Learning Center, a school for homeless children. The schoolchildren received new coats, went on two field trips to new and exciting places, and had their campus landscaped courtesy of Leadership Stockton. A new seating area and brick BBQ were added to the Emergency Food Bank. The 2012 Leadership Stockton class made $12,000 in renovations to Pixie Woods, the 2010 class renovated a shelter for victims of domestic violence, and the list just goes on and on. Though the projects differ, each has one similarity: it has brought true change to the community. Even before the single project days, Leadership Stockton was still all about giving back to the community. Students were expected to volunteer, raise money for charities, and help greater Stockton however they could.
