From Your CEO... by: Doug Wilhoit

Part of the changing of the guard is the end of the terms of some wonderful folks on the Chamber Board of Directors. We all say a BIG THANK YOU to Dan Keyser (Grupe Commercial Company), Tina Williams (Pacific Gas and Electric Company) and Bob Young (Stockton Golf and Country Club)! Each of them brought so much to the table and they worked hard with fellow board members to make sure any and all board actions or direction for staff was accomplished with complete information, discussion and done with due diligence for what was in the best interest of the community and Chamber alike. It is our hope that all three will still stay involved to make sure their hard work will continue. I am sure they will knowing these three! We also welcomed at the Installation Dinner two board members who filled unexpired terms and the chamber bylaws now have them Well, we are now officially in the summer season and that means the “changing of the guard” here at your Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce. As I wrote in the May Port O Call, I have been so fortunate to serve under 13 Presidents (yes, Mr. Goucher, you were a two-term president) since the Good Lord placed me here at your Chamber in 1999. This year was no exception now that Immediate Past President Gary Long has passed the torch to your new President, Steve Crabtree, Esq. (my 14th President) at the annual Installation Dinner held on June 27th at the beautiful Stockton Golf and Country Club. Thank you very much to all the staff at SGCC for a wonderful evening. We would also like to thank San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ken Vogel for officiating the official swearing in ceremony of the new officers and board members! It added greatly to this important evening. I first want to thank Gary for a job well done! His leadership and active participation in the community and Chamber alike continued the example of other past presidents to all that will follow and I know he will carry this on during his year as Immediate Past President! I know he will continue to work hard for the community, Chamber and the wonderful people therein of which he is so much a part of and is proud to be a Stocktonian. Gary, thank you very much on behalf of all of us and I want to personally thank you for a fun, exciting, exhilarating and successful year. And in your honor: “Remember to shop local for $.70 of every dollar spent here stays here!” 6

filling a full three-year term. We are very happy to have Diane Vigil (Dameron Hospital Foundation) and Dr. Lewis Gale (Pacific’s Eberhardt School of Business). Both have shown that they are committed board members and for the next three years will continue to be a big part of your Chamber. We are also proud to welcome to the Chamber family three new board members: Deitra Kenoly (The Record and chair of our Business Education Alliance Committee), Joey Steelman (Lord’s Gym) and Joy Sweger (All About Numbers). Each will bring the same board work ethic that has been a mainstay of the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce and at the same time new perspectives and ideas to help move both your Chamber and the community forward. It is also the time to thank all the committee chairs and members for a job well done this past year and a huge thank you to the great staff here at your Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce who day in and day out do such a wonderful job even during these difficult economic and tumultuous times we have been going through as a community we all love so much! I feel so blessed to have such a wonderful team that I call family. And since Gary et al. always remind me of my age, let me say that with age comes the ability to appreciate those who really make it happen as a team! Of that I am sure! The staff and I congratulate and truly look forward to working for and with your 2013-2014 President, Steven Crabtree, Esq. (Herum/Crabtree Attorneys)! I have the upmost respect for and

Personal History Crabtree’s family history traces back to a deep history in the Murfreesboro area of Tennessee where he was born in 1955. But

unlike the majority of his family, Crabtree became a Californian at the age of five when his parents relocated to Wheatland, a small community north of Sacramento, where Crabtree was raised. He later earned a B.S. degree with honors from U.C. Berkeley in business administration with an emphasis in accounting and finance, which has been an essential part of his expertise in business law. While at Berkeley in the early 1970’s, Crabtree was an Army ROTC cadet. “I was a rare breed on campus,” he laughs. “I admit I had a few things thrown at me.” After graduating from law school at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville—where he met and married Patrice, his wife of nearly four decades—Crabtree spent three years as a Captain in the US Army. During his enlistment, he had the opportunity to expand his legal experience by serving as defense and trial counsel defending and prosecuting soldiers at military courts martial. After his stint in the military, Crabtree and his family settled in Stockton, where he earned an L.L.M. degree in taxation from University of the Pacific and became a member of Neumiller & Beardslee. He left the firm in 1997 to become a founding partner of the firm now known as Herum/Crabtree. He’s practiced with the firm ever since. Today, Crabtree’s expertise in business matters has become legendary in the Stockton area. “I call myself a business lawyer,” he said. “I’m a certified specialist in taxation and my work is primarily focused on real estate, estate planning and business transactions.” These particular specializations have well prepared Crabtree for his new position with the Chamber. His expertise in the particular needs and challenges that face Stockton’s business community means that he has a valuable perspective on just what the Chamber can do to make the benefits of membership even more appealing to the area’s business owners. To find out more about Chamber President Steven D. Crabtree and the many valuable benefits available to Chamber members, visit the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce online at stocktonchamber.org.
