From Your CEO... by: Doug Wilhoit
Many of you have read my Port O Call articles for these past 11 years (132 articles in total), and I thank you for it, so you know that my usual MO is to start with a quote from some either well known—or in some cases, obscure—historical person to make a point about the article I am writing for that month. It is not very often that I am in the right place at the right time to hear a quote that is so timely as the one I heard on Sunday, May 1, 2011 (May Day) while playing golf at the historical and beautiful Stockton Golf and Country Club. The first Sundays of the months from March to November, the SG & CC has a couples group of 24 golfers on the course for a friendly little round with an ever-changing format from month to month. It is a great way for member couples to play and socialize with fellow members of the club. On a beautiful May Day here in Stockton (the temperature in the home town of Forbes was about 40 degrees lower) Joan and I were in a foursome with Dick and Barbara Fichtner (Dick is this year’s SG & CC board president and many of you know him as the voice of the Pacific Tigers Basketball team broadcasts). We were enjoying a round of golf under a warm blue sky with our resident Red Fox scampering around the

Following Dr. Elam, Lynn King, Athletic Director of the University of the Pacific, spoke with the class about the life of a student athlete. He is doing great work and we are lucky to have him in our community. After a short break the class then heard from Karen Furst, Health Officer, San Joaquin County Public Health Services, and Shené Bowie, Program Coordinator, Health Promotion & Chronic Disease Prevention, about obesity and diabetes in our community and the task force that is being started to combat these serious health issues affecting a large number of people in our community. Just before lunch, the Class got up-and-moving with a tour of the University’s Sports Medicine Center facilities led by Chris Ludwig, Athletic Training Education Program Clinical Coordinator. Then, Jody Baker, Director of the Athletic Training Program from the University of the Pacific, led a tour of the Sport Sciences Department. The Class got to see the new Ted Baun Student Fitness Center, the Main Gym, the Janssen-Lagorio Gym and A.G. Spanos Center facilities. After the

their continued support of the Visitors Bureau and our efforts.
The Visitors Bureau Bids Farewell After seven fruitful years at the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce, the efforts of the Stockton Conference & Visitors Bureau will fall under an independent organization with new board leadership beginning July 1. With the renewal of the Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) in December, future funding for tourism promotion will go entirely to the Stockton Convention & Visitors Bureau (SCVB), a separate 501 (c)(6) corporation led by a board of directors primarily represented by the local hotel industry. The board president is George Kaplanis, General Manager of the Hilton Stockton. In February, the Stockton Convention & Visitors Bureau appointed current Chamber Visitors Bureau Director Wes Rhea to lead the new and expanded bureau. Wes began his employment at the Chamber in 2003 as Program Coordinator for the Business Education Alliance. In 2004, he took on the responsibility of running the Leadership Stockton program, which he facilitated until 2008. In 2005, he was selected to take over the Visitors Bureau operations. Since coming to the Chamber in 2004, the Visitors Bureau has grown and expanded its reach. The Chamber and Visitors Bureau was instrumental in forming Stockton’s first TBID in 2005 and from there implementing a variety of marketing programs including creating a new annual Stockton Visitor & Activities Guide, launching a new website (www.VisitStockton.org), increasing group sales efforts,

counted over 30,000 students as participants in the program. The school that uses the highest percentage of their Ports tickets is rewarded at the end of the five-week initiative with $1,000 for their PTA, courtesy of the Ports Anchor Fund. Unlike Baseball by the Books, the Ports’ biannual Education Day is “more like a field trip to the ballpark for area kids,” said Sacchet. For the event, the team holds “a special early weekday game with an education theme. The kids get to interact with our players and hear about the choices the players made that got them where they are now. The kids really love it.” The Education Days draw local schools to the ballpark on two different days during the late spring and early summer—this year’s events were held May 11 and May 23—and offer each student a ticket to the game and a meal voucher at a substantially discounted price. Activities before and during the game, including a question and answer session with Ports players, keeps the focus on education throughout. In addition to these large-scale initiatives, the Ports Anchor Fund makes many smaller donations to almost 200 different organizations throughout the year. This includes nearly $5,000 in support for local little league teams, a youth baseball camp during the months of June and July where children can meet and learn baseball skills from Ports players and many other events and Pictured left to right: Margaret Sacchet, Community Relations Manager; Splash, Mascot; and Pat Filippone, President and General Manager Photography by: Arturo Vera, Arturo Vera Photography
