YOU DON’T PROFIT FROM SICK EMPLOYEES. WHY DOES YOUR HEALTH PROVIDER? In an industry built on fee-for-service care, Kaiser Permanente succeeds because we’re built around prevention and the highest quality care. One Harvard Business Review article described our care as “untainted by any economic conflict of interest.”* And in an industry report by The Economist, Kaiser Permanente’s care was described as promoting economy and quality care with “no financial motive to order unnecessary procedures.”†

I have talked about many people who I have admired and/or quoted from local, state and national leaders who have said things for the ages. I have also written about many good things people have done, as well as the not so good things and mistakes made. One thing that stands out in the people I admire the most is that if they made a mistake or error in judgment, they are the first to admit it, learn from it and do their best to improve and not make the same mistake twice. Also, those that do a job 100% do not brag about it or take credit, but continue to try and improve as a member of a team of community members. In a recent POC article, I commented

LEADERSHIP STOCKTON BY:TIMM QUINN Leadership Stockton Class Picks Community Project During Annual Retreat Leadership Level Sponsor: Financial Center Credit Union The Leadership Stockton Class of 2014 chose their class community project at September’s overnight retreat at Camp Tuolumne Trails in Groveland, CA. The beautiful camp welcomed the class for their retreat with open arms and great weather. The class started the retreat with an expectations exercise that got them thinking about what to expect the next day and a half. Then Chris Stevens, President of Summit Solutions Consulting, LS Class of 2007, took over and led the class through some leadership theory and fun team-building games. The afternoon brought a fun little game called “Little Known Fact Bingo” where the class learned fun random facts about each other. After that, the class completed an exercise that taught them the finer points of voting vs. consensus and how they as a class will determine how to choose their community project.

Then it was time for presentations on the five potential community projects the class could choose from. After the presentations, the class was free to enjoy the great outdoors for the evening, including s’mores around the campfire. The morning light brought a hearty breakfast followed by a discussion of the pros and cons of all five projects. After a passionate discussion, the class chose their project and planned out the leadership, subcommittees, action plan and timeline for their project. The Class of 2014 has chosen to adopt Fremont Park in downtown Stockton. They will be rehabbing the image of the park, cleaning, establishing a neighborhood watch, as well as installing exercise stations for the surrounding downtown schools and

the ATHENA Award. Recipients are nominated by their peers and chosen by a committee composed of previous ATHENA recipients and community leaders. Dr. Kathy Hart is the recipient of the prestigious ATHENA Award, which honors women who have exhibited excellence and creativity in their professions, who strive to increase quality of life within their communities and who actively work to assist other women in realizing their own leadership potential. Monica Streeter is the recipient of this year’s Young Professional Leadership Award, which recognizes dynamic community leaders under 40 who demonstrate these same qualities. Dr. Kathy Hart Dr. Kathy Hart, the first permanent female Superintendent/ President of San Joaquin Delta Community College, was overwhelmed when she found out she’d been chosen as this year’s ATHENA Award recipient. “I am so honored and delighted to be in the company of so many outstanding women, women who have given their time, talent and treasure to make this community better,” said Hart. A former middle school teacher who eventually earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Michigan, Hart has dedicated her life to learning, teaching and furthering educational opportunities for others.

Having grown up in Stockton, Streeter has a soft spot for the places of her youth, namely the Fox/Bob Hope Theater and the Haggin Museum, where she serves as a Board member and Trustee, respectively, in addition to her new stint as a Board member of Goodwill Industries. “Friends of the Fox has really made me more aware of some of Stockton’s history and the hidden gems we have here,” said Streeter. “The same can be said about serving as a Trustee for the Haggin Museum. Every child who grew up here visited the museum as part of the school curriculum, but for many people that’s where their involvement with the museum stopped.” “I’m really honored that I get the opportunity to serve on the Boards of these organizations,” Streeter said. “Each adds so much to the community in a different way.” The ATHENA Awards will be presented at the annual ATHENA Luncheon on November 21, 11:30 a.m. at the Stockton Golf and Country Club.
