More singing here at the keyboard… Recently, I was asked to represent your Chamber at a Chancellor’s Circle event at San Joaquin Delta College. Following remarks by Dr. Kathleen Hart, Superintendent/President of the College, Dr. Brice W. Harris, Chancellor, California Community Colleges, spoke of the rising significance of the role of community colleges in our state economy. Did you know that economists project that by 2020, 65 percent of job openings in the U.S. will require some postsecondary education or training? Delta College is magnificent—one of the 150 best in the nation. Delta is doing a great job of not only meeting present educational needs but preparing to meet future needs. Before the formal event at Delta, we were treated to a tour of the art department and several technology-oriented departments well prepared to meet the educational needs of the next decades. And the campus is so beautiful! I left the event in a total state of exhilaration and

CEO of Visionary Home Builders. Dohrmann Insurance, also located in Stockton, launched the competition for helping clients such as Visionary Home Builders develop healthier workforces and ultimately lower their health insurance costs. Because many of Dohrmann’s clients are small companies with 50 to 250 employees, they don’t yet have established wellness programs. “We took a look internally nine months ago and said, ‘What more of a role can we play? How can we help our customers have healthier employees?’” said Dohrmann’s Director of Strategy and Innovation Bryan Colyer. “We just don’t want to be the company that says, ‘Here’s your plan and here’s your deductible and see you next year.’ We want to be more than that.” The result was to start a Fitbit wellness program for their customers. The Super Bowl challenge was a step challenge among 10 local clients in Modesto, Stockton, and Lodi. The team with the highest daily average steps would win the challenge. The next challenge will be a group challenge where all participants work together to step to Dublin, Ireland, by Mar. 18 to celebrate St. Patrick’s day. It’s a 5,032 mile journey from Stockton to Dublin, Ireland.

T OUCH BASE with the

If you build it, they will come— at least, that’s been the case for Stockton’s Banner Island Ballpark. Stockton Ports President Pat Filippone has seen marinas develop and hotels open all around the Stockton proper since the ballpark has been there. “I think the importance of the Ballpark to the city is immense,” said Filippone. “You’re talking about a place where the community can gather and have a good time around the national pastime. And we're a business that’s been in Stockton since the 1940s. The other big thing is that it’s a draw nationwide to get people to come to Stockton— not only regionally, but also from out of state.” That sort of draw has a noticeable economic impact, between visitors staying in hotels, buying from local gas stations, and eating at local restaurants. Filippone states that if things are conducted with professionalism and quality, that people will actively want to come to see Stockton and enjoy the city in general. “From my eyes, there has been some redevelopment down here,” said Filippone. “I’m sure it’s slower than everyone would have hoped ten years ago, but we went through a pretty steep recession, so I’m sure that played a part in it. But I can’t sit here as any kind of expert in redeveloping because it’s not my field.” In addition to the economic impact, the Stockton Ports aim to support their community through service.

By Noel Daniel

“One of our main mantras as a company is to give back to the community that supports us,” said Filippone. “We’re heavily involved in education and youth sports causes. We do our Baseball by the Books program, which we reach 40K local students and

In Partnership With:

May 21, 2016 9:30am - 12:30pm at University Park

S

tockton is improving everyday because of entrepreneurs and their ability to find creative solutions to real problems. We want to see our youth step into this role in our community and the business world.

Visit University Park, quench your thirst with some lemonade, and show your support to the students of Health Careers Academy. We hope it’s a transformational experience for our youth and our community!

At Health Careers Academy, students are excelling and setting the bar high for their peers. Lemonade Day is an opportunity for students to learn about starting, owning, and operating their own business. We want to encourage them to keep striving for success in life and work.

Presented By:

The beauty of entrepreneurship is that if you work hard and think critically, you can be successful — no matter who you are. So, let’s take the reins, use what we know, and continue to improve. Together, we can make a difference in our community and make our world a better place.
