Aristotle said, “Educated men [women] are as much superior to uneducated men [women] as the living are to the dead.” And between A.D. 46-120, Plutarch stated, “The very spring and root of honesty and virtue lie in a good education.” What early philosophers felt and taught is as true today as it was then!

ATHENA Awards Nominations Sought 2019 We now live in a society where superheroes and masked creatures with superhero powers are revered. Leaping buildings in a single bound or soaring in the air from one place to another almost seems a reality. In the real world, we have superheroes in our workplaces, schools, hospitals, government, service industry, retail, and nonprofits. These unsung superheroes are our co-workers, volunteers, and colleagues who work tirelessly, giving their time and energy to improve the lives of others. Take a few minutes to think about all the superheroes in our community, then consider nominating them for one of this year’s prestigious ATHENA Awards. Nominations are open for the ATHENA Award and ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award (Under 40 Years Old). The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22. For more information and to download a nomination form, visit www.StocktonChamber.org and click on the ATHENA Awards tab in the Events dropdown menu. Or call 209.547.2770.

your hard work and dedication to making Stockton a better place to live. Your hard work with your yearlong project at the Women’s Center Greenhouse was a great example for the community to show what a group of people can get accomplished when they work together. The Class of 2019 was recognized for their great work Thursday, June 13 at the Leadership Stockton Class of 2019 Graduation Dinner. Project Summary: The Class of 2019 chose to renovate the Women's Center - Youth & Family Services Greenhouse Building, with the mission of remodeling the interior of to provide a safe, comfortable, and modern environment for the children who have experienced or witnessed domestic violence here in San Joaquin County. The Greenhouse is the children’s counseling center for children living at DAWN House (a domestic violence emergency shelter) in Stockton, California. It creates a safe place for children who have experienced or witnessed domestic violence to let go of the fear, guilt, and responsibility they feel and allows them to just be kids. These young victims learn that the violence is not their fault, while they create safety plans and role-play scenarios, so they can practice what to do in case of an emergency. With the partnership and support of the Women's Center - Youth & Family Services, Leadership Alumni and donors, the class raised over $37,000 and received over $40,000 of donated in kind products and services. The scope of the project included: • Obtained full Tenant Improvement Permit • Abatement of asbestos contaminated drywall • Demolition of walls and a surprise concrete shower basin • Reframing of compromised floor members and dry rot • Re-plumbed sanitary sewer and water lines • Rework of lighting and electrical throughout the space • Framed new ADA accessible restroom, storage and kitchen • Tape, texture and wall patch • Paint entire interior

PROGRAMS AND PUBLIC POLICY BY: FRANK FERRAL Sign up to be a host site for our Students WIN Program WIN stands for Workforce Internship Network. This exciting and new component of the BEA program further develops opportunities for students to take on nonpaid internship and paid part-time positions with local businesses and companies. Through the Students WIN program, eligible high school students will go through the process of attending a career panel, participating in a mock interview, and developing a jobready resume prior to being referred to a potential work site. The internships and part-time positions will give students hands-on experience to learn proper work etiquette and develop valuable skills that they can transfer to future careers. The Chamber is excited to partner with the Stockton Unified School District and its high schools to support our future workforce. The program will partner with many types of businesses requiring various skill levels. Job duties should include skills building industry-specific tasks, and general work experience and ethics. The combination of both hard skills and soft skills will enhance the student’s learning experience and development. Businesses can take advantage of this opportunity by providing skills training while getting some extra help either through paid part-time positions or unpaid internships. Opportunities will be available throughout the school year. It's a win-win for the community.
