and confident that they have your best interest and success at heart. I look forward to working with all of you—members, board, and staff! Stockton is on the verge of a tremendous rebirth and as a native Stocktonian, I am proud to be a part of it. The Stockton Kings coming to our fine city is just one example of all the good that is taking place. The Record has been part of the Chamber for many years, and I was able to witness first-hand the benefits of being a member. Through programs such as BEA, SCAP, and FRESH (to name a few) as well as the number of community events brought to you by the Chamber, our business members are provided a resource to strengthen relationships through networking and getting involved. This year, we will focus on two initiatives. We will continue the effort to grow our membership and we will relaunch our “Do Business with Local Business” initiative in an effort to encourage our residents to commit to those businesses that made the decision to invest in our community. We will highlight some of them with each issue of Port O Call. Wishing you tremendous success for many years to come! “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...” Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities The two economic cycles experienced by San Joaquin County and its communities over the past 25 years have been dynamic. In only the last decade, this giant economic wave took our economy from great prosperity in 2006, to a 25-year-high unemployment level of 17 percent—now a new low of 5.8 percent in May of 2018. Current reports and data tell an amazing story of an economic turnaround for San Joaquin County. Will this be the best year ever in terms of economic prosperity? Tighter labor markets, lower unemployment, rapid technology change and adoption are all social and economic indicators that underscore positive signs pointing to a profitable ride to a continued rising tide of prosperity. We can expect continued economic growth and rising employment in 2019 because the pipeline is full and the backlogs are high. Family

economy based on this growing demand for homes and all the goods and services that support residential growth. Affordable San Joaquin communities are the only commutable real estate residential alternative to the unaffordable San Francisco Bay area. Well masterplanned communities like Mountain House, Tracy Hills, and River Islands, with land dedicated to employment centers, will become the hot location for companies and families in the next five years. Demand for high-quality, well-located commercial and industrial real estate isn’t expected to wane anytime soon. The long-term investment in developing large scale industrial and logistics parks, like Tracy’s Prologis International Park of Commerce and CT Realty Northern California Logistic Center, are only two of the many examples that will attract more large scale growing operations. The San Joaquin economy is the best it has been in the past quarter century, and the end is not in sight.

and dedicated to furthering local business interest in the community.”

“I came looking for a job in 1981 and found a career,” said Kenoly. Working in The Record’s advertising department, she steadily worked her way up the ladder for over twenty years until she was finally named the Director of Advertising, a position she held for twelve more years, until finally being named President and Publisher of The Record in 2017. She is the paper’s first female President and Publisher. In short, Deitra had the kind of ideal career trajectory most people can only dream of, and she got there through consistent hard work and passion. But no one gets anywhere without a

Under her leadership, she intends to expand the degree to which local business is promoted. Currently, the Chamber makes a big push for shopping locally during the holiday season, but Kenoly wants to expand that into a year-round effort, doing whatever possible to promote local businesses, including highlights right here in Port O Call, and encouraging everyone to “get out and shop, dine, and take advantage of the services available to us right here!” Deitra also seeks to expand the membership of the Chamber, believing that goes along with promoting local business and strengthening the Stockton economy.

helping hand now and then. Kenoly cites her fantastic mentors over the years—including Virgil Smith, Terry Kroger, and Roger Coover—as the highlights of her career, and credits them with helping her reach the goals she has strived for over the years. Importantly, The Record has proven to be adept at adapting and

staying relevant as the times change, as all good businesses must. Over the years, it has grown from a newspaper into a larger media company, offering commercial printing and distribution services, as well as digital marketing solutions. Their website at recordnet.com has allowed them to flourish in the digital age. Another characteristic that makes Kenoly a natural pick for President of the Chamber is her commitment to the people of Stockton. Both within and without The Record, working for the community has been a great joy to Deitra and a driving force for her work. As a Stockton native, getting to work closely with local businesses and assist them with their advertising needs so they can grow has given her a great sense of purpose. “The thing I am most proud of is giving back,” Deitra said, referring to the coat, sock, and blanket drive she started along with Andy Prokop of United Way, Kendra Clark of SMG, and Edward

With Deitra, it always comes back to community. “The ability to connect and interact with our business community through the programs and events that are in place is what I love,” she said, noting that it goes hand-in-hand with what she’s always been doing at The Record. Promoting the many wonderful businesses of Stockton in the Chamber just takes what she has loved about her work in advertising and brings it to a larger scale. In this way and in others, her work and life up to this point has more than prepared her for the position she is about to take on. The Record’s mission statement says, among other things, that its job is to deliver vital information and quality service in the public interest. As President of the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce, Deitra Kenoly will continue to do just that, as she has for nearly four decades. www.stocktonchamber.org
