community from its beginnings in 1901, 114 years ago. (You remember, don’t you, Doug?) Your Chamber board and staff members
have been at the forefront of advocating for the betterment of our entire community on so many issues. It would take this entire Port O Call issue and more to detail the complete history of good work done. Each time I enter the Chamber boardroom, the photos of the presidents dating back to 1901 remind me of these Stocktonians who contributed so much to our community. I am encouraged to follow their examples. On that wall soon will be the photo of our Immediate Past President Blain Bibb, who is a tough act to follow! We all admire his leadership, enthusiasm and his devotion to this community and the Chamber. Thank you, Blain, for a job well done. You are a terrific role model, and I know that you will continue to be an integral part of future successes!

The Chamber then acknowledged our retiring and hardworking board members, Clint Harless of Stockton Auto Glass and Justin Redman of Central Valley Community Bank, for their contributions. We also thanked committee chairs and their members for their dedicated service. We welcomed three returning board members for full three-year terms: twotime Chamber President Rick Goucher, CBRE Inc.; Kay Ruhstaller, Family Resource & Referral Center; and Bob Young, Stockton Golf and Country Club. Additionally, we welcomed two new board members, Ryan Haggerty of Haggerty Construction, Inc. and Jared Steinwert of F & M Bank. Each will bring fresh new ideas and enthusiasm to the board, and I look forward to working with them. Next month, I will share with you our collective vision for the 2015-16 year. In the meantime, thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President. I ask that you all participate with your Chamber for events, programs, issues, committees, and making our community thrive.

Judith Buethe can drive a tractor, ride a horse, and preserve enough fruits and vegetables for a family of five anticipating a long Iowa winter. Until high school, Judith walked a mile-and-a-half to attend school in a one-room country school house. But that’s all before Buethe headed out west and ultimately settled in Stockton. Along the way, she earned an associate’s degree from Fullerton Junior College, a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis, and a master’s from University of San Francisco. Now Buethe is President of the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. For her, it’s the logical next step in championing this area as a great place to do business. Twenty-six years ago, Buethe founded her own small business here in Stockton. From the very start, Buethe saw value in joining the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce – so she did. “I have always appreciated the work this Chamber has done, its values, and the positive impact it has had in this community,” Buethe said. “The Chamber is an integral part of the Greater Stockton community.” It’s the sort of community perspective that Buethe needed to thrive in public relations. Her firm focuses on public outreach, informing and encouraging members of the public to be involved in public projects and to help guide the design and development of those projects. Buethe has also produced many of the region’s most

D. David Smith JULY 10, 1928 – M AY 9, 2015
Thank you for all you did for the Stockton Chamber and Stockton Community D. David Smith, longtime resident and contributor to Stockton, passed away peacefully May 9. Born July 10, 1928, raised in Lebanon, Indiana, he graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in Business and later from the Institute of Organization Management of the Chamber of Commerce of the U.S. He married Rachel I. Smith in 1949 and served in the U.S. Air Force. They had two children, D. Gregory Smith and Elizabeth Smith Atkinson. David served for over 25 years as the Executive Vice President of the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce. Prior to this, he served as Retail Division Manager of the Woodland District Chamber of Commerce. He and Rachel retired on the Oregon Coast, but soon returned to Stockton where he worked part-time as a development officer for the Haggin Museum, then as President of the Better Business Bureau of Mid-Counties. He served both as Executive V.P. and Manager of the Stockton Ag Expo farm equipment show, which he started in 1977, when he served the Chamber. He was the public relations director for Humphrey’s College & School of Law, facilitated strategic planning sessions for country fairs and city Chamber of Commerce retreats, served on the Board of the S.J. Regional Transit District, and served as President of the Mid Valley Better Business Bureau. He was selected “Mr. Stockton” in 1976 by S.J. County Board of Realtors, was acknowledged as “Stocktonian of the Year,” “Executive of the Year,” and he received the “Russell Petit” award as the outstanding Chamber Executive of the year by the California Association of Chambers of Commerce. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central United Methodist Church, Stockton.
