Over 30 years ago I attended a Women’s Conference through my church. We were fairly new to the church, so this was an opportunity

to get to know the women better and with four children at home a weekend away sounded pretty good. During all the meals there was a person at the table who was identified as the server with a variety of vehicles, a dot underneath your plate or the handle of the water pitcher pointed towards you. I was the server for every meal. One of the ladies after this kept occurring offered to do it, but I said no, obviously God was trying to teach me something. After that experience, I knew my place was to serve. What I didn’t fully realize at the time was that a true leader is a servant first. Preparation met opportunity at the Chamber. The opportunity to serve in this capacity over the last year was one not sought nor anticipated. That in itself has been the joy of representing the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce. It is time now to pass the baton to the elegant, smart, and dedicated Deitra Kenoly. We have grown together in our Chamber duties and I consider her a valued friend. Deitra will take the Chamber to another level bringing her years of experience with advertising, sales, budgets, management, and now as President & Publisher of The Record. She is also a hometown girl who loves this community.

His team approach works and you can feel it every time you enter the offices-each staff member is valued and appreciated for their contribution to our mission. We, as the Board of Directors, are grateful for all they do for our membership and the integrity of the organization. Speaking of the Board of Directors, it has been an honor to serve with you. Now to the members and those of you out there thinking of joining the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce. We are committed to ensuring you are served and commerce thrives in our community. No one at your Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce takes you for granted and I would suggest you not take the Chamber for granted either. Valley Rail Project Receives Major Grant Funding by State – Will Fund Series of New Stations and Track Improvements to Increase Connectivity and Frequency of Passenger Rail Service to Sacramento The California State Transportation Agency announced a series of grant awards under the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP), and selected the Valley Rail Project as a major awardee, providing $500,500,000 to fund a series of new stations and track improvements to increase connectivity and frequency of service to the Sacramento region. The Valley Rail Project is a joint proposal by the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority and the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission to dramatically improve passenger rail service to the Sacramento region with both Amtrak San Joaquin and Altamont Corridor Express (ACE®) service. The grant funds will help perform track improvements on the existing Union Pacific Railroad Sacramento subdivision freight corridor that runs just east of Interstate 5 to make it usable for passenger service, and build new shared San Joaquin and ACE stations in Lodi, Elk Grove, Sacramento City College, Sacramento Midtown, Old North Sacramento, and Natomas.

Haggin Museum: Looking Back at Black with Esther Roman You’re invited to attend an exciting evening at the Haggin Museum on June 21 at 7 p.m. with Esther Roman, a cultural historian of African-American memorabilia, who has been a collector for over twenty years. Many of the artifacts in her collection tell their own story through the evolution of the black image. Esther Roman did not start out to be a collector of African American memorabilia. In fact, she refers to herself as an “accidental collector.” For her, collecting African American memorabilia has been fascinating and gives people a glimpse back at African American history. She believes that these items all have a story to tell and she has decided to take on the job of helping them to tell their story.
