They do that by recycling, managing water conservation, and implementing clean air values to reduce their cost of doing business. The working arm of the GTSJ is the “REACON” Team, which stands for Recycling Energy & Air Conservation. As you might guess, sustainability is not just a one-day event. Companies need to strive every day to meet standards. The work done by GTSJ is why, in 2013, The Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce was inducted into the International Green Industry Hall of Fame, the only Chamber of Commerce to have received that recognition in the world. THE POWER of the

PORT By Noel Daniel

I

n 2030, the California Air Resources Board is pushing Ports to get as close to zero emission as possible. This is a

surprisingly hard task, considering the current technology—but the Port of Stockton has readily risen to the challenge. Starting early so as to reduce their impact to the local air basin, the Port of Stockton has several efficient and award-winning projects that are already in the works to be as green as possible. “One of our biggest pushes lately is moving toward zero-emission cargo-handling equipment,” said Jeff Wingfield, Director of Environmental and Public Affairs. “We are working on several different projects to bring in zero-emission vehicles, replacing diesel-powered equipment with cleaner electric models.”

In fact, they’ve just started receiving some of the lithium ion units within the last three weeks, as of writing. These forklifts can carry loads of 36,000 pound steel coils. To enact these projects, they’ve partnered with the Ports of Long Beach and Oakland, as well as one of their tenants, Stevedoring Services of America. At the end of the day, they will receive 36 zero-emission cargo handling units, setting them up to be one of the cleanest Ports in terms of percentage of zero-emission equipment. “The Port’s programs are not only meeting the legal obligations that any business would undertake, but they are also taking the next step to improve the quality of life of people in the region,” said Richard Aschieris, Port Director. “These programs are important to the Port, though not required. We wanted to go the extra mile.” Most popular are the owl nesting boxes. For those unfamiliar, the Port has about 20 boxes set up for owls to nest in and control the pest population around the Port in a natural way. They’re at about 95 percent occupancy and incredibly efficacious. They’ve also hooked up cameras to watch the owls, having recently added sound so you can experience these magnificent and helpful creatures closer than most get a chance to. “There are other Ports that have been reaching out to incorporate similar programs at their facilities.,” said Wingfield. “We actually won a national award for this program.” The award came from the American Association of Port Authorities that oversees Canada, North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This project won the 2017 Environmental

Operations Center from Sheriff Patrick Withrow (LS Class of ’11). The Sheriff provided an overview of the Sheriff Departments operation of the Jail Facility, and a glimpse of the myriad of other duties which fall under the Sheriff’s Department. Then the class got a K-9 demonstration from two amazing dogs. After the demo, the class was off for a jail tour—what many consider the highlight of the day. During the hour, the class toured the French Camp facility visiting the intake, women’s area, the men’s area, administrative segregation, the medical clinic, and the communications area. The class then traveled to the Stockton Police Department to hear from Stockton Chief of Police Eric Jones (LS Class of ‘06) about crime and Stockton PD’s efforts to combat this hot issue. He provided great statistics, new technology they are using, recent successes, and encouraged the public to become more aware and involved in the process. Following the Chief, the class walked to the new San Joaquin County Courthouse where they were joined by the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, who spoke to the class about what a DA’s office does. Next Miriam Lyell, San Joaquin County Public Defender, spoke about the Public Defender’s Office. The Honorable Xapuri Villapudua, Presiding Judge, San Joaquin County Superior Court, spoke next and gave the class a glimpse at how a judge fits into the justice system. Next Erin Guy Castillo, (LS ’15) Court Commissioner, spoke about her new position. Then it was off for a tour of the amazing Courthouse from Court Executive Officer/Jury Commissioner Rosa Junqueiro. Many folks were involved in the success of the Law Enforcement session. A big THANK YOU goes to the following: Sheriff Withrow, Chief Jones, SJC District Attorney’s Office, Miriam Lyell, Rosa Junqueiro, Erin Guy Castillo, and the Hon. Judge Villapudua.
