jewel, The Port of Stockton. Mark your calendar for May 19. Come a bit early and

from 10:30 a.m. to noon, enjoy touring the city and sponsor booths followed by a delicious lunch catered by Outback Steakhouse. At this event we often enjoy the close-up view of a giant ocean-going vessel passing by. (As an Iowa farmer’s daughter, I am always intrigued by the sight of a ship passing through our agricultural Delta lands.) This year, following lunch, you will hear the State of the City from the perspective of four of our city’s leaders—R. Jay Allen, Chairman, Port of Stockton Commission; Cynthia Fargo, CEO, Downtown Stockton Alliance; Jeffrey Michael, Ph.D., Director, University of the Pacific Center for Business and Policy Research; and Anthony Silva, Mayor, City of Stockton. Take notes. These presentations are sure to provoke discussion in the weeks to come. Furthermore, we promise to end on time—yours truly is this year’s enforcer!—and to get each of you back to your office to engage in the commerce that keeps our city so vibrant and strong.

as plans for upcoming projects. Overall, the event will celebrate another year of forward progress for the City of Stockton. For his speech, Mayor Anthony Silva will highlight quality of life and getting back to basics. In other words, “doing things that the people of Stockton can see.” More specifically, sidewalk and pothole repairs and tree removal. Of course, citizens of Stockton will be pleased to hear that the crime rate continues to drop as the city hires even more police officers. “The homicide rate is down, value of homes up, and the council can now make decisions about the quality of life for residents,” said Mayor Anthony Silva, “The All-American City restored.” Other speakers will shine light on the actions Stockton is taking toward constant improvement. Using tactics garnered from the National Main Street Center, Cynthia Fargo, CEO of the Downtown Stockton Alliance, will highlight the creation of an economically competitive and socially connected downtown. “This is an incredibly crucial time for downtown Stockton,” said Cynthia Fargo. “We have momentum through the Ten Space housing and retail

CYNTHIA FARGO, CEO, DOWNTOWN STOCKTON ALLIANCE

Downtown is crucial to Stockton’s success as a community. A city is only as strong as its core, and fostering local business creates enormous rewards. Stockton’s place in the big picture for the state and region will be the focus of Dr. Jeffrey Michael, Director at the University of the Pacific Center for Business and Policy Research. Dr. Michael is a regular speaker about the region and stated in a recent blog

Special Thanks To: San Joaquin County Office of Education

James Mousalimas, County Superintendent of Schools, San Joaquin

Education plays a vital role in the future economic prosperity of San Joaquin County, so a hands-on look at education was the perfect way to begin the day. The day began with the class divided among 12 schools throughout Stockton. They spent the morning shadowing the principal, learning about their particular school, and their successes and challenges. At lunchtime, the Leadership Stockton class gathered at the San Joaquin County Office of Education for the remainder of the day. A working lunch covered some of the questions and revelations the class had based on their school site visits. They were also joined by session sponsor Ralph Womack, LS Class of 1990, for a discussion on early childhood education.

County Office of Education (SJCOE), gave the class an overview of the SJCOE and their mission. Next up, the class heard from Kirk Brown and Kelsie Pombo about the educational services the SJCOE offers and STEM. Stephanie Omste then spoke to the class about County Operated Schools & Programs. After a short break, the class heard from Brandie Brunni on Special Education and all the services SJCOE offers for those with special needs. Joni Hellstrom spoke next on the Venture Academy Family of Schools. The day ended with a lesson on everything you wanted to know about school finance in 30 minutes from Jim Thomas. Thank you to James Mousalimas and Kelly Fry for coordinating and facilitating the afternoon portion of the session, to each of the schools for graciously opening up their campuses for our Leadership Stockton visitors, and to all of our speakers and panelists for the day.
