CLUBS & ACTIVITIES
Why not take a break from the books and try one of the sessions on offer from our Sports Academy. It’s all student focused with many sessions delivered by our own Sports students. Don’t forget the SRC Sports Centre is also open to all of our students, pop in to find out what they have to offer.
College life isn’t all about hard work and that’s why we encourage all of our students to try a new hobby or learn a new skill. It’s about taking time away from the books and having a bit of fun. All our clubs are very student led, but recent ideas have included climbing, first aid, sign language, debate groups, music and film clubs. If you’ve got an idea tell us about it and we’ll help you bring it to life.

Our students have never been afraid to roll up their sleeves and do their bit for a good cause. From throwing wet sponges at teachers to running our own photo booth, or simply selling cakes, we love a good fundraiser. Got an idea, talk to us about it; we could help you make it happen.
Every year we put the focus on respect in a unique festival dedicated to sharing experiences, cultures and building a greater understanding of equality and diversity. As a student at SRC Bede you’ll get the chance to take part in lots of visits and trips. We want our students to feel happy and confident with the courses they choose, so here’s our top tips for picking what’s right for you. It sounds obvious but think about what you are good at, the subjects you enjoy most and are interested in – after all if you enjoy it and are good at it chances are you’ll do well. That is why we believe it is part of our job to help make sure all of our students have a good grasp of the basics and the qualifications to match. For students under 19 it is now a Government mandate that they keep working towards these core GCSEs if they haven’t already achieved grade A*-C/9-4. SUCCESS LAUREN
It’s been a busy year so far for Public Services student Lauren. The sea cadet has been carrying out a range of civic duties after being named a Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for North Yorkshire. “I couldn’t believe it, I was buzzing to be chosen,” she said. Lauren hopes to go on to become a pilot in the Royal Navy.

There’s nothing like an unconditional offer from your first choice university. Just ask Psychology, Health & Social Care and History student, Emily. She secured a guaranteed spot to study Psychology at York St John University. Rather than easing off on the work load, she said: “You still want to do your very best when a university has shown such faith in you, you want to prove them right.”

Hard work and dedication paid off for SRC Bede student James. A string of A*s secured him a place at the University of Oxford. Achieving top results in A level Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry, as well as his extended project, James said: “I had hoped for these grades and my teachers believed in me. It feels pretty good.”
EMILY
Inspiring others comes as second nature to Sports student Emily who was named Young Volunteer of the Year at Stockton Council’s Sport Club and Coach Awards. A coach at Norton Hockey Club, Emily is also a volunteer at Tees Valley Sport, and a Sports Leader at SRC Bede’s Sports Leadership Academy. “It does take time and dedication but I enjoy it and it’s all experience which I know will pay off in the future,” she said.

Take a look around, everything you see has been designed by someone from your clothes to the design of the phone in your pocket.

Studying Art & Design offers you the chance to explore your own creativity, developing your ideas, think critically and learn to express yourself artistically with growing expertise.
What will you do?
You’ll explore different types of media from drawing and painting to textiles, printing, sound and photography. Learning through workshops and demonstrations you’ll explore different materials to suit your creative style. Visiting national and international galleries,
you’ll consider ways of getting your work out to an audience and see your own work exhibited. You need: A keen interest in art and a minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above, plus an Art GCSE grade A*-B is recommended.
What’s next? You could go on to study Fine Art or a related subject at university. Future careers include graphic design, interior design, creative direction, product and set design.

BUSINESS STUDIES Two years
Developing your understanding of the business world, this course will encourage you to consider the issues that affect the success of small and large businesses today. You’ll put that knowledge into practice by considering management decisions and recommendations based on real situations. What will you do? You’ll develop a thorough understanding of business theory and principles through our lively and active lessons. As well as making business decisions based on real life scenarios you’ll be expected to justify those decisions and back them up with sound reasoning based on evidence. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above. GCSEs grade C/4 in Maths and English Language is recommended. What’s next? Moving on to university you can further develop your business knowledge or specialise in a preferred field. Future careers include management, international business, marketing, or you could go on to launch your own business.

A LEVELS
Two years
A Level Chemistry is an essential stepping stone on the way to many amazing careers such as medicine, cancer research, veterinary studies, chemical engineering and many more. The problem solving nature of A level Chemistry is a sought after skill which many employers desire in their prospective staff. What will you do? You’ll learn about the world from a new perspective, from sub-atomic particles to large scale oil refineries and power plants. The A level covers, organic, inorganic, physical, analytical and environmental chemistry. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including Additional Science higher level or Chemistry higher level grade B or above, Maths grade B/6 or above and English Language grade C/4 or above. What’s next? You could go on to university to study a range of subjects including pharmacy, medicine research and forensics. Future careers include industrial opportunities, engineering, agriculture and veterinary science.

CLASSICAL CIVILISATION Two years
Studying Classical Civilisation offers you the chance to delve into the ancient world, carrying out further research to discover the history, literature and lifestyle of ancient Greeks and Romans. What will you do? You’ll read about Ancient Greek comedy, laugh at the crude humour and consider how it fits into contemporary politics and history. You’ll study Odysseus’ journey home from Troy, explore the mythology and the irrationality of the Gods, the life of Women in ancient Greece and Rome. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including English, English Language or English Literature grade C/4. What’s next? Many students go on to study subjects including Classics, History, English Literature, Archaeology or Anthropology at university. Future careers could include teaching, research or curating.
COMPUTER SCIENCE Two years
Nobody can deny the effect that computers have had on our life and society. From the internet to mobile phones, space travel to medical diagnostics, computers touch every aspect of our lives and have driven world change.
What’s next? Expand your knowledge with further study at HND/C level or progress to a relevant degree programme. Future careers include consultancy, networking, computer programming, game or web design.
ECONOMICS Two years
There’s never been a more relevant time to study Economics. This course will encourage you to consider all the factors that affect standards of living and the quality of life for different parts of society. You’ll be able to evaluate the state of the nation and consider solutions to our current financial and economic problems. What will you do? Economics is essentially the study of who gets what, so on this course you’ll look at the allocation of jobs, wealth and resources in the UK and on a worldwide scale. Lessons are dynamic and you can expect to analyse and suggest solutions to the economic problems of the day. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including Maths grade C/4 or above. A grade C/4 or above in English Language is also recommended. What’s next? You could progress to further study at university in a relevant area before moving on to careers in areas such as business, accountancy, statistics or public sector organisations.
What will you do? You’ll learn how systems work and develop the knowledge needed to write the software. Developing practical, analytical and programming techniques you’ll develop real skills that can be taken into industry or higher education. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including Maths grade B/6 or above, Core Science, Additional Science, and grade C/4 or above in English Language. You should have some previous experience of programming or a genuine drive to learn these skills.

ENGLISH LITERATURE
From newspapers to political speeches and even cereal boxes, we are all surrounded by language every day. By studying English Language you’ll be encouraged to consider and explore the use of everyday language, how it changes and develops, and how it relates to you and wider society.
If you love literature, this course will give you a great excuse to read to your heart’s content and then indulge yourself by discussing, thinking and writing about what you have read. This course offers something for every avid reader; you will examine great works of English Literature from the Romantic period through to the present day.
Two years
What will you do? You’ll develop a greater understanding of linguistics, exploring the use of everyday language through a variety of media. You’ll discover how children learn language as well as exploring how language has changed over time. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including English Language grade C/4 or above. What’s next? English Language students move on to a wide range of courses at university. Future careers include anything from working in education, law, psychology, the many and varied areas of journalism (for example, travel writing, online editorials, reviewer), marketing, press officer, researcher, copywriter.

What will you do? If you love reading books from all genres then English Literature gives you the best reason to read, read, read. Covering all the great works of Literature from Chaucer’s medieval period of literature to modern day author’s such as Khaled Hosseini, Margaret Atwood and Carol Ann Duffy, reading texts will lead you to think, debate and write about authors’ writing techniques, use of settings, characterisation and themes. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C/4 or above including English Literature. What’s next? You could go on to a variety of university courses in areas such as English, Law or Media/ Journalism. Future careers include teaching, journalism, public relations and management or you could work in a museum, library, theatre or cultural organisation.

FURTHER MATHEMATICS Two years
Are you passionate about Maths? Studying Further Mathematics will offer you the chance to excel in a subject you love and are good at. Challenging your logic and reasoning skills, it will further develop your knowledge, giving you an understanding of a range of pure and applied topics. What will you do? You’ll build heavily on the work done in A level Maths, developing an expertise in pure and applied Maths, learning how to apply different mathematical concepts and seeing how they relate to each other. What do you need? A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including Maths grade A/7, or preferably A*/8 or 9 and to be well motivated. What’s next? Further Mathematics will help prepare you for university courses with a high mathematical content such as maths, physics, engineering, economics and actuarial science. Potential future careers include teaching, accountancy, medicine, engineering or working in industry.

GEOGRAPHY
HISTORY
This course examines the relationship between people and the environment. You’ll develop a critical understanding of some of the most pressing challenges facing 21st century societies today, from climate change to food security.
How did the Nazi Party get into power? What was the Wall Street Crash and how did America recover from it? History is more than learning about historical events; we challenge interpretations of the past so that we can understand how events shaped our lives today. This is an exciting and varied course which will give you the skills and knowledge to succeed in higher education or the workplace.
Two years
What will you do? You’ll study themes across the two years including changing landscapes and places, global systems and governance and contemporary themes. Fieldwork is an integral part of the course and you will visit various regions of the UK to study hydrological change, rural settlement and glaciation. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C/4 or above, including Maths and English Language plus an interest in society and the environment. Having studied Geography at GCSE is not a pre-entry requirement. What’s next? You could go on to study Geography or a related subject at university leading to a diverse range of careers such as environmental consultancy, planning and development surveying, teaching or nature conservation.
Two years
What will you do? Learning through group work, individual research, presentations and debates, you’ll cover areas including Britain 1918-1997, America: Boom, Bust and Recovery, Nazi Germany, and The Witch Craze, along with history from the 17th to the 20th Century. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including English Language grade C/4 or above. GCSE History is not essential but recommended. What’s next? You could go on to study history or a related subject at university and go on to a future career in areas such as law, politics, teaching, museum or library work or journalism.

LAW
A LEVELS
Two years
Whether you want to become a solicitor or barrister or just want to know more about the law this course will spark your interest and help develop useful skills such as problem solving and the art of debate. You’ll learn about areas such as Criminal Liability for crimes such as murder, manslaughter and theft, Civil Liability in relation to personal injury and the court procedures involved. What will you do? You will learn about the different types of courts and the cases that they deal with, including both criminal and civil cases. You’ll learn how laws are developed through the courts and Parliament and how they are interpreted by the judiciary before going on to specialise in a specific area of law, whether it is the Law of Tort, Criminal Law or Contract Law. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above. GCSE English Language and Maths grade C/4 or above are strongly advised. What’s next? Most students progress onto university to study a Law degree, but if university isn’t for you there are a number of different options. The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives offers apprenticeships along with other professional qualifications such as a Diploma in Law and Practice, which could see you going straight into the profession following your A levels.

MATHEMATICS Two years
Developing your understanding of maths could open up a world of opportunities when it comes to choosing your future career. Mathematics controls many aspects of the modern world from iPhones to cash machines and telecommunications to production processes in engineering, stock control, investment strategies and jet engines. What will you do? This course will enable you to examine the power of the media, its regulation, genres, and audience, while also developing practical skills by creating your own media products for television and print. If you enjoy learning what makes up the physical world around us then studying physics is a great choice for you. Our innovative and interactive approach to the subject will give you the chance to see how physics can improve people’s lives and how it is used in engineering and technology today.
Psychology offers the opportunity to study the reasons why people behave the way they do. It explains everything from judgement and perception to psychological disorders such as schizophrenia. Psychology is interested in behaviour causes, using scientific study of human and nonhuman behaviour, exploring experimental methods and statistical analysis.
Two years
What will you do? Covering everything from biomechanics and motion, to solar cells on spacecraft, particle physics to electromagnetism and earthquakes, you’ll develop an understanding of the physical world at a fundamental level while also building your problem solving and analytical skills. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including Additional Science higher level, or Physics higher level grade B or above, plus Maths grade B/6 or above and English Language grade C/4 or above. What’s next? You could go on to build on your knowledge by studying Physics or Engineering at university or you could choose to specialise in a particular field. In the future you could be a geophysicist or seismologist, a research scientist or meteorologist.
Two years

By practising philosophy, humanity is able to ask itself the most profound questions relating to life on earth. How should we live? How can we decide what is the right thing to do? How can we make sense of our most intense experiences? Many people don’t want to consider these questions but if you take Religion, Philosophy and Ethics then you are different – you are willing to open your mind and consider really deep questions. What will you do? You’ll look at key questions of philosophy and theology through discussions, question and answer sessions, activities and debate. You’ll be challenged to think critically not only about other people’s beliefs but also your own, developing the ability to logically appraise opinions, arguments and conclusions. You need: A questioning mind along with a minimum of five GCSEs grade C/4 or above including English Language, History or Religious Studies. What’s next? You could go on to study Religious Studies, Philosophy, Politics or Literature at university. The literal meaning of the word Sociology is the ‘science of society’. The interaction of people, as members of society, is what Sociology is about. Social events and changes do not occur by accident. Sociology attempts to bring a systematic understanding to our knowledge of what goes on around us locally, nationally and even internationally. What will you do? In a sense ‘doing’ Sociology is a continuous series of debates with and by… sociologists! We spend most of our time studying what sociologists have found out and how their conclusions are debated, argued and disagreed with by those who may have other ideas and see things quite differently. You’ll debate, among other things, questions such as: Why do some people commit more crime than others? Why are girls now out-performing boys in school? Will divorce continue to rise? If so, what are the consequences? You need: To enjoy reading, have an enquiring mind and a minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above. GCSE English Language grade C/4 or above is recommended. What’s next? Extend your knowledge by going on to further relevant study at university before moving into future careers in areas such as law, social work, the health service or human resources.

By studying Applied Science you will gain experience of scientific industrial processes at the forefront of modern day industry.
If you haven’t got your health, what have you got? On this stimulating course, you’ll explore questions such as: How does a major life change, such as bereavement, impact on individuals? How do you become an effective communicator? You can also design your own research project into a topic of your choice.
What will you do? You’ll build a solid knowledge in areas including periodicity, substance production, cell structure and waves in communication. Lessons are interactive and engaging and practical investigations will be a regular part of your lessons.
What will you do? You’ll cover areas such as what it means to be healthy, factors that affect the quality of life, communication, individuals’ needs, physiology, anatomy, sexual health, pregnancy, nutrition and explore your responsibilities as a health professional.
You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including Core and Additional Science higher level. You’ll also need GCSEs in Maths and English, grade C/4 or above.

We all use technology every day whether at school, work or at home. It is at the heart of everyday life from computer graphics and control systems to communications and problem-solving.
If you have a passion for live music a career in the recording and sound industry could be for you. With opportunities available for talented engineers, producers and technicians you could go on to earn a living doing the very thing that you love.
Two years
What will you do? This vocational course combines hands-on practical activities with more traditional written work to develop your understanding of IT and related topics, with the opportunity to learn about areas such as computer systems, information systems, web development, communication technologies and IT technical support. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including GCSE grade C/4 or above in English Language and preferably an ICT or Computing qualification. What’s next? You could go on to further study at HND/C level or a related university degree. This course provides a grounding for many IT related courses.
Two years
What will you do? As a Music Technology student you’ll cover many aspects of the recording and sound industry, examining traditional sound recording techniques, recording different instruments and sounds, and improving your listening skills. You’ll record musicians, bands and soloists and develop your own skills as an engineer and producer. Our students have worked with signed bands on music videos, live gigs and TV and film soundtracks for major companies such as BBC and Sky. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C/4 or above and preferably a GCSE in Music or an instrument grade from a recognised awarding body. What’s next? You could expand your skills by moving on to a relevant university degree or apprenticeship. Future careers could include studio work, music production or working as a sound technician.

A LEVEL EQUIVALENT
Year one: BTEC Certificate Year two: BTEC Diploma If you are considering a future career in law this course could offer the perfect start. Looking at both aspects of criminal and civil law, in particular, the procedures used at a police station, criminal trials and personal injury claims, you’ll develop a broad understanding of how the law system works. What will you do? You’ll learn about the different types of courts and the cases that are dealt with. You will also learn about the different sources of law and how laws are developed through the courts and Parliament and how those laws are then interpreted by the judiciary. You will also discover the powers that the police have in relation to arrest and detention and discover the legal principles surrounding those areas. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above. GCSE English Language and Maths grade C/5 or above are strongly advised. What’s next? You may choose to continue your studies at university with a Law degree, but if university isn’t for you there are a number of different options. The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives offers apprenticeships along with other professional qualifications such as a Diploma in Law and Practice, which could see you going straight into the profession following your A levels.
SPORT & EXERCISE SCIENCE Two years
Want to work in the sports industry? There are more career options than you see on the field. This course is designed to delve further into this exciting industry, giving you the knowledge and skills to play your part.
What will you do? This course not only encourages you to be fit and active through a range of sporting activities but also covers the science behind it. You’ll learn about anatomy for sport and exercise and physiology. As well as practical sessions you’ll also write reports, carry out presentations and carry out group work. You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including Maths and English Language grade C/4 or above and Science. A sporting/fitness background is also preferable. What’s next? This course is designed to help you progress onto further study such as a sports related degree. Future careers include sports therapy, coaching, sports education or community sports management.
EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION (EPQ) One year
At SRC Bede Sixth Form College we offer the chance to complete an Extended Project Qualification. This allows you to carry out research into a subject of your choice beyond the A level syllabus, helping prepare for university. This qualification also offers the opportunity to earn extra UCAS points (70 UCAS points/28 on the new UCAS Tariff/ half an A level). What will you do? You will learn to manage, design, plan and complete a project using organisational skills and thinking creatively and critically. Carrying out extensive research you’ll go on to create either a 5000 word report or a product plus a 1000 word report, and deliver a 10 to 15 minute presentation.

Focusing on key services including fire rescue, the police, ambulance, prison, customs and excise and the armed forces you’ll be given a realistic introduction to what working life is really like in the uniformed services and get the skills to prepare you for this type of work. At the junction turn right on to Marsh House Avenue. Go straight on at the roundabout. Continue straight ahead along Marsh House Avenue and you will see the entrance to the College on your left. From the South Leave the A19 at the A1027 junction. At the roundabout at the top of the slip road turn right. At the next roundabout turn left on to Wolviston Road. Continue straight ahead on Wolviston Road, through three sets of traffic lights. At the next junction turn right at the traffic lights on to Rievaulx Avenue. Continue all the way to the end of the road, passing through one set of traffic lights. At the T-junction turn left on to Marsh House Avenue. You will see the College entrance on your right.
