ENRICHMENT College life isn’t just about lessons learned in the classroom. At SRC Bede we encourage all of our students to explore and try out new hobbies and skills. We offer a wide range of enrichment activities and we are happy to discuss any ideas you may have. Current examples include vocal theory and performance, the chemistry society, music and film clubs and the Duke of Edinburgh awards.

SPORTS ACADEMY Take a break from the books and try one of the sessions on offer at our SRC Sports Academy. There’s a whole host of sporting activities on offer, whether you are a beginner or have a particular sporting talent we can help you to develop. Many of our sessions are delivered by our own Sports students. Don’t forget to check out what else our fantastic SRC Sports Centre has to offer.

RESPECT FESTIVAL

Every year we put the focus on respect in a unique festival dedicated to sharing experiences, cultures and building a greater understanding of equality and diversity. Whether it’s inspirational talks from guest visitors, tasting new foods, or even having a go at playing the African drums, this is about looking outside of the everyday and gaining a greater understanding of those around you.

Our students have never been afraid to do their bit for a good cause and there’s no shortage of creativity when it comes to ideas. From bag packs to sponsored hikes, face painting the teachers or dressing up, there’s always plenty of opportunity for you to get involved. Have you got an idea? Talk to us and we could help you make it happen.

CHARITY FUN As a student at SRC Bede Sixth Form you will get the chance to take part in lots of visits and trips. Recent trips have included visits to Manchester, London and Barcelona. Students have also tested their outdoor skills with expeditions to Keswick and the North Yorkshire Moors.

TRIPS We want to help you make the right choices for you. Our annual Progression Day offers the chance to explore a selection of the amazing opportunities ahead of you. With speakers from a selection of universities and employers, including the armed forces and police, this is a day to both inform and inspire.

That is why, during your time with us, we will help and support you when it comes to gaining real work experience. HEALTH & WELLBEING

The college has a team dedicated to your health and wellbeing. If you need information or advice on anything from financial worries to bullying, sexual health or drug and alcohol misuse, our youth workers are here to help. We also work closely with external agencies who regularly visit the college and can offer expert advice.

SRC SPORTS CENTRE

The SRC Sports Centre, situated at our Billingham site, offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor fitness and sporting activities. The centre includes: • • • •

Our Learning Support Team are dedicated to ensuring that learners receive the appropriate support that they require for their individual needs. We can arrange a support interview and ensure the appropriate support is put in place. Learners have different support needs, but our ultimate goal is to ensure our learners are respected and cared for as individuals and are encouraged and supported to reach their full potential. The support may be for a specific learning difficulty, such as Dyslexia or Autism; or just help with Maths and English.

Across college we have a safeguarding team and a full time safeguarding officer to prioritise your safety at all times. We can offer advice, support and ensure that help from other agencies external to college can be sought to enable the best outcomes for our students’ safety and overall wellbeing. If you should feel unsafe or feel you need to access support we are here to ensure you are heard and safe at all times.

COURSE FEES AND FINANCE Course fees If you are under the age of 19 at the start of your course there should be no fees to pay.

If you are 19+ speak to our Information Team about fees, repayment and student loan opportunities. Student Finance You will be invited to fill out a finance application form when you come for an interview at the college, or apply online www.stockton.ac.uk/ student-finance-application. This will determine whether you are eligible for support with travel, childcare, meals or equipment*. Students can also get an NUS card for £12, giving discounts on music, fashion, books, films and much more.

Previous school: Ian Ramsey C of E School Studied: level Biology, Chemistry and Maths A Mitchell is well on his way to achieving his ambition of becoming a doctor after a string of A* and A grades saw him secure a place to study Medicine at Oxford University. Of SRC Bede he said:

Now studying English Literature and Film at the University of Surrey, looking back at her time at SRC Bede she said:

Picking up a double Distinction Star was a special moment for Rebekka. As a young mum she ploughed all her efforts into achieving something better for her young family. She is now studying Childhood and Youth Studies at Teesside University.

Amber chose SRC Bede because of its record for success. She is now studying Midwifery at York University. Of her experience at SRC Bede, she said she is so appreciative of all the support she received from all of her tutors and careers advisor, Alice.

ELeanor Previous school: All Saints Academy Studied: A level Biology, Chemistry and Psychology Eleanor is studying Neuroscience at King’s College London after picking up two A* grades and a B in her A levels. She said:

ELLIOTT Previous school: Grangefield Academy Studied: level Classical Civilisation, A English Language and English Literature Elliott smashed even his own expectations when it came to A level results day. The former Grangefield Academy student secured his place to study Primary Education at York St John University. Of his time at SRC Bede he said:

As a young athlete Amy knows it takes hard work and determination to reach your goals. The Sport student has managed to work her studies at SRC Bede Sixth Form around competing on the world stage. ENGLISH & MATHS They may be the skills that we all take for granted but believe it or not we all use English and Maths every day, often without even thinking about it. That is why we believe it is part of our job to help make sure all of our students have a good grasp of the basics and the qualifications to match. For students under 19 it is now a Government requirement that you keep working towards these core GCSEs if you haven’t already achieved grade A*-C/9-4. A LEVELS ART & DESIGN

BIOLOGY

BUSINESS STUDIES

The UK’s creative industries are now worth a record £84.1 billion to the UK economy. Art and Design is a subject that could lead to a wellpaid and fulfilling career. The course offers you the chance to explore your own creativity, develop your ideas, think critically and learn to express yourself artistically with growing expertise. There is no greater satisfaction than being absorbed in the creative process and this course is tailored to provide you with this experience.

Biology is at the forefront of 21st century science as we continue to unlock the secrets of life at a rapid pace. By studying biology at A level you will be immersed in cutting-edge developments and experience dynamic lessons in our energetic department.

Developing your understanding of the business world, this course will encourage you to consider the issues that affect the success of small and large businesses today. You will put that knowledge into practice by considering management decisions and recommendations based on real situations.

A LEVELS CHEMISTRY Two years

Are you interested in how new medicinal drugs are synthesised, how space probes identify elements on other planets, how athletes are drug tested or even how the body controls your blood PH? A level Chemistry will answers these questions and more. Reasons to join us… This is a highly practical subject that is a gateway to many high earning careers. It is highly valued by all universities as it develops numeracy skills and logical thinking and it is usually a requirement for entry into Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science.

What will I study? You will build on the knowledge gained at GCSE to further explore the patterns in the Periodic table (Inorganic Chemistry), the reactions of carbon based compounds (Organic Chemistry) and how the speed (rate of reaction) and amount of products (equilibrium) can be monitored in a reaction (Physical Chemistry). You need: GCSE additional Science higher level or Chemistry higher level grade 6/B or above, GCSE maths grade 6/B or above and GCSE English Language grade 4/C or above. What’s next? Students have gone on to a study a range of subjects from Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Geology and Chemical engineering to less obvious choices such as Accountancy, Journalism and Law.

CLASSICAL CIVILISATION Two years

Studying Classical Civilisation offers you the chance to delve into the fascinating ancient world. We look at different topics to discover the history, literature and lifestyle of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Discover the world that gave us heroes, villains, the Olympian gods, mythical stories, political ideas and philosophy, and so much more. Reasons to join us… Classics is a fascinating, flexible subject that can fit with a variety of study programmes, you will also get the chance to take part in relevant study trips. This year our students visited London. What will I study? You will study: The world of the hero, looking at Homer’s Greek epic, The Odyssey and Virgil’s Roman epic The Aeneid; Culture and society, studying the rule of Caesar Augustus, the 1st emperor of Rome; and ancient Greek/Rome beliefs and ideas You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade 4/C or above including English, English Language or English Literature. What’s next? Many students go on to study subjects including Classics, History, English Literature, Archaeology or Anthropology at university. Future careers could include teaching and journalism.

COMPUTER SCIENCE Two years

Nobody can deny the effect that computers have had on our life and society. From the internet to mobile phones, space travel to medical diagnostics, computers touch every aspect of our lives and have driven world change. Reasons to join us… Computing is one of the fastest growing industries which is great news when it comes to future job opportunities. What will I study? You’ll learn how systems work and develop the knowledge needed to write the software. Developing practical, analytical and programming techniques you’ll develop real skills that can be taken into industry or higher education. You need: GCSE grade 6/B or above in Maths, Core Science, Additional Science, and grade 4/C or above in English Language. You should have some previous experience of programming or a genuine drive to learn these skills. What’s next? Expand your knowledge with further study at HND/C level or progress to a relevant degree programme. Future careers include consultancy, networking, computer programming, game or web design.

A LEVELS ECONOMICS

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

ENGLISH LITERATURE

There’s never been a more relevant time to study Economics. This course will encourage you to consider all the factors that affect standards of living and the quality of life for different parts of society. You will be able to evaluate the state of the nation and consider solutions to our current financial and economic problems.

What do people think when they hear your accent? What’s a tablet? Ask Aristotle, then Moses, a doctor then Steve Jobs. What was a vacuum before it became a vacuum? Why might you not want ketchup on your chips (should they EVEN BE CALLED ‘fries’?) once you find out what the word ‘ketchup’ actually means? Is anyone ACTUALLY laughing out loud when they’ve typed ‘LOL’? Do women tell lies better than men? How do you assert power over people? All of this and more is explored in the wonderful world of English Language.

If you love literature, this course will give you a great excuse to read to your heart’s content and then indulge yourself by discussing, thinking and writing about what you have read. This course offers something for every avid reader; you will examine great works of English literature from the Romantic period through to the present day.

Two years

Reasons to join us… Studying Economics will give you an understanding of the factors affecting all of our everyday lives. There are also lots of opportunities to take part in discussions and debates and our students are regularly invited to appear in local media interviews. What will I study? Economics is essentially the study of who gets what, so on this course you will look at the allocation of jobs, wealth and resources in the UK and on a worldwide scale. Lessons are dynamic and you can expect to analyse and suggest solutions to the economic problems of the day. You need: GCSE Maths grade 5/B or above. A grade 5/B or above in English Language is also recommended. What’s next? You could progress to further study at university in a relevant area before moving on to careers in areas such as business, accountancy, statistics or public sector organisations.

Two years

Reasons to join us… With amazing pass rates this course offers a fascinating insight into the language. There are modules that allow you to study the language that you use and create. This year our students took part in a cross curricular trip to London. What will I study? If it has been written, spoken, typed, tweeted, re-tweeted, sent, broadcast shouted or mumbled, you will study it. We look at how and why language is used in all its forms in the world today and yesterday. You need: A grade 4/C, or preferably above, in an English subject. An inquisitive mind and an analytical eye are also important. The ability to write essays in an academic style is crucial and a willingness to work hard both in and outside of lessons. What’s next? Students of English Language go on to study a wide range of subjects including English, History, Media, and Education.

Reasons to join us… This is a course that has your interest and needs at its core, which leads to amazing results. What will I study? Over the two years you will read and study eight texts: Othello; Death of a Salesman; The Handmaid’s Tale; The Kite Runner and a collection of poems by John Keats and William Blake. You will choose two texts for your coursework essays. You need: A passion for reading old and modern dramas, novels and poetry. A willingness to participate in class discussions. An open mind to embrace views that challenge your own. A minimum of five GCSEs grade 4/C or above including English Literature. What’s next? University courses in areas such as Law, Media, Journalism, Education and English. Future careers include teaching, public relations or you could work in a museum, library or theatre.

A LEVELS FURTHER MATHS

GEOGRAPHY

HISTORY

Are you passionate about maths? Studying Further Mathematics will offer you the chance to excel in a subject you love and are good at. Challenging your logic and reasoning skills, it will develop your knowledge, giving you an understanding of a range of pure and applied topics.

Geography has come a long way from the learning of capital cities and colouring in maps. This course examines the relationship between people and the environment. You will develop a critical understanding of some of the most pressing challenges facing 21st century societies today, from climate change to food security, poverty to piracy.

How did the Nazi Party get into power? What was the Wall Street Crash and how did America recover from it? History is more than learning about historical events; we challenge interpretations of the past so that we can understand how events of the past shaped our lives today.

Two years

Reasons to join us… Studying Mathematics and Further Mathematics helps to make the transition to mathematically rich university degree courses easier and develops skills desired by employers. What will I study? You’ll build on the work done in A level Maths, developing an expertise in pure and applied Maths, learning how to apply different mathematical concepts and seeing how they relate to each other. You need: You need to have a desire to understand complex mathematical concepts, how and why they work as well as exploring new abstract concepts. By studying the course, at least 50% of your timetable will be Mathematics so you need to be highly committed and motivated.

Studying physics is a great choice if you are interested in exploring the nature of the physical world. This course emphasizes the context and applications of physics, letting you see how physics can improve people’s lives and how it is used in engineering and technology in the modern world.

Psychology offers the opportunity to study the reasons why people behave the way they do. It explains everything from judgment and perception, to complex psychological disorders, including depression and schizophrenia. Psychology is interested in behaviour causes and the effect that cause has on an individual’s behaviour. This is done using the scientific study of human and non-human behaviour. Psychologists use experimental methods, observation and statistical analysis to research and test their theories.

The literal meaning of the word sociology is the science of society. The interaction of people, ourselves, as members of society is what Sociology is about. Social events and changes do not occur by accident. Sociology attempts to bring a systematic understanding to our knowledge of what goes on around us - locally, nationally and even internationally. Using a variety of real life case studies and theories and applying recognized research methods the sociologist sets off to try and understand our human condition a little better.

Spanish is a world language of major importance in the global market place. This course will allow students to develop confidence and communication skills as well as an enthusiasm for languages in general. Possessing the skills to communicate in a foreign language opens up a range of opportunities that could give you the competitive edge when applying to university or when seeking employment.

Covering aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, placing an emphasis on coursework and practical activities, this course is the equivalent to one A level. It is suitable for students wishing to work in applied science fields such as forensics and cosmetics.

If you have not got your health, what have you got? On this stimulating course, you will explore questions such as: How does a major life change, such as bereavement, impact on individuals? How do you become an effective communicator? You can also design your own research project into a topic of your choice.

We all use technology every day whether at school, work or at home. It is at the heart of everyday life from computer graphics and control systems to communications and problem-solving.

Reasons to join us… Studying in our state of the art laboratory you will gain knowledge in all three sciences which can be applied to almost any future career. What will I study? You will experience a mix of practical, lab-based activities and theory sessions. You need: You will need at least 4/C grades in your GCSE science as well as 4/C grades in English and Maths. WE ARE HERE BY CAR

From the North Leave the A19 at the A689 junction signposted Hartlepool. At the roundabout take the second exit on to the A1185, signposted Seal Sands. At the junction turn right on to Marsh House Avenue. Go straight on at the roundabout. Continue straight ahead along Marsh House Avenue and you will see the entrance to the College on your left.

From the South Leave the A19 at the A1027 junction. At the roundabout at the top of the slip road turn right. At the next roundabout turn left on to Wolviston Road. Continue straight ahead on Wolviston Road, through three sets of traffic lights. At the next junction turn right at the traffic lights on to Rievaulx Avenue. Continue all the way to the end of the road, passing through one set of traffic lights. At the traffic lights turn left on to Marsh House Avenue. You will see the College entrance on your right.
