LEG WAXING KICK-STARTS A FUNDRAISING EFFORT College proved a hair-raising experience for performing arts acting students. The guys braved a leg wax in an effort to help raise funds for a group trip to London. Speaking before the event, Sol Taibi, said: “We wanted to extend our annual visit by an extra day. Our teacher suggested we help cover the cost for everyone by trying to raise the additional money.” Brain storming a host of ideas, the students kick-started their fundraising efforts with the leg wax and a supermarket bag pack. “Some of the lads weren’t able to make the bag pack, so this seemed like a good way of doing our bit,” said Sol. Enlisting the help of beauty students, seven of the boys rolled up their trouser legs. Part of the Enterprising Stockton initiative, Stockton Riverside College works hard to encourage a culture of enterprise across the college, bringing a host of enterprise opportunities to students alongside their studies.
ALWAYS REMEMBER - BE KIND What small act of kindness could you do to help improve the lives of all those around you? That’s the question we are asking our students in an effort to create a culture of kindness across the college. It doesn’t have to mean going out of your way or doing something big. Often the simplest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference.

So whether its sharing a smile, holding a door or saying a quick thanks, it doesn’t take a lot to be kind and you could make someone’s day just that little bit brighter. Here’s a picture of what some of our students had to say…
The Generation Games
There’s not many of us that get the chance to compete for our country on the world stage. But imagine doing just that - alongside your grandparents! That was the situation teenager Paige McLeod found herself in when she qualified to represent Team GB at the 2017 ITU Duathlon World Championships in Canada. “I don’t think many people would be able to say that they have competed in the world championships with their grandma and granddad,” said the 17-year-old from Ingleby Barwick. “But it is a nice feeling, especially as they have had such a massive involvement in getting me there.” Both Paige and her granddad Tony, represented Team GB for their relevant age categories in the duathlon and aquathlon. While grandma, Sandra, completed the family hat trick, taking part in the aquathlon. Triathlon training since she was seven, SRC Bede Sixth Form student Paige says her grandparents have always been her inspiration. Both heavily involved in the Cleveland Triathlon Club for 30 years it is no surprise the sport has become a family affair.
However, with Sandra having qualified for the world championships only once before and Tony twice, in their 30year history of the sport, the pair said this year it really did feel like the stars aligned. “It was an amazing experience and something that I have always wanted to do as a family,” said Sandra, who is secretary, events organiser, coach and junior co-ordinator at the local club. Tony, who is the club’s head coach and welfare officer, added: “It just goes to show if you are determined to do something that you can.” Training up to six days a week with a combination of cycling, swimming and hill runs, the family were in a prime position to spur each other on for the world event in Penticton. Paige said: “It was an amazing feeling to compete against some of the world’s best athletes, from all over the world. The atmosphere was absolutely amazing.” With Paige and Sandra both having now qualified for the 2018 World Championships and Tony waiting to hear, the family are hoping to get the chance to do it all again in Denmark next year.
SRC Bede celebrates results day success It was top marks for students at SRC Bede Sixth Form as they celebrated results day success. The college in Billingham achieved a 100% pass rate in 21 subjects and an overall 98.3% A level pass rate. Among those celebrating was 18-year-old Elish Chambers. The triple A* student is now off to study Medicine at Newcastle University after picking up the highest possible grades in biology, chemistry and maths. “I’m so, so happy. We had actually already received an email from Newcastle University congratulating us on securing our places as the others were opening their envelopes, so I thought maybe I had just scraped through. But I didn’t expect to open it to three A*s so that was even better,” she said. James McCabe Graham, 18, was delighted after achieving two A* grades and an A, in A level Maths, Chemistry and Physics, secured his place to study Chemical Engineering at Newcastle. He said: “The teachers at SRC Bede are the best, they’re completely dedicated and always have loads of time for you.” SRC Bede director Rick Wells said: “We are delighted that our students’ hard work and determination has paid off in their achievements.”
Double cause for celebration There was double the reason to celebrate in the Oliver household. This summer mum and daughter got the results they needed to kick-start their future careers. For Amy, who has successfully completed her Level 3 in childcare, the next step is university. While mum Christine is starting work as a teaching assistant in a primary school after picking up her Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning. Of studying beside her daughter, Christine said: “We have been studying different subjects, so didn’t really see each other around the college but it has been good to be able to support each other, sitting together on a night doing our college work.” While for Amy, who got to work with children in Namibia alongside her course, college has been an all-round amazing experience. Progressing to the FdA in Early Years at the college, in partnership with Teesside University, she said: “The best part for me has been the work placements and getting to know all of the different children.” Get In Touch Tel: 01642 865 566 Email: info@stockton.ac.uk
Amy hopes to go on to become a police family liaison officer.
Business success for Izzie Choosing to study beauty therapy at Stockton Riverside College proved the right move for Izzie Fenny. Just three years later the 19-year-old is running her own business and enjoying every second. Picking up her Level 3 in Nail Services this summer, she said: “I always wanted to have my own business.” Studying beauty not only gave her the technical skills she needed but working in the college salon helped her to develop the confidence and the know-how to work with clients. “Having real clients come in to the salon prepares you for your first job,” said Izzie, who started her career working in a salon. Keen to enhance and further develop her skills she chose to continue her studies going on to study nails. Now running her own business from home, Izzie’s Beauty Room, the future is looking bright for the young entrepreneur. Bidding a fond farewell to the college, she said: “I love my tutor to pieces and I have really enjoyed my time here. There was never a day that I didn’t want to be here.”
Young volunteers help create a brighter future
Keeping up with the Oscars’ action
A group of young people proved that they are good citizens as they lent a hand to The Skills Academy in Billingham. The volunteers, who are taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS), gave their time and effort to create a calming outdoor space for students. The Skills Academy provides an alternate learning environment for school leavers who don’t feel ready for the bustle of larger college life. Academy manager Marie Clay said: “The new sensory garden, along with the improved shelter for our animals, will be a welcome addition to our outdoor facilities. “It will particularly benefit those students who enjoy spending time outdoors and develop confidence from caring for the animals.”
Delivered locally by Safe In Tees Valley, the National Citizen Service is a four-week development programme that enables young people aged 15 to 17 the chance to build skills for work and life by taking on new challenges. NCS Stockton team leader Edd Stephens said: “It is about learning independent living skills, including how to be organised and managing a budget. “The community project offers the chance to put what they have learned into practice and give something back.”

DAY IN THE LIFE (APPRENTICESHIPS) Ever wondered what a hospitality apprenticeship involves? We caught up with Canteen & Cocktails Level 3 Hospitality Leadership apprentice Sam. Here’s what she gets up to in a day… Working in a busy restaurant means that there’s a lot of prep to do before opening time. Sam has to make sure the canopies are open, menus are out, the till is sorted and the specials are on the boards. A good telephone manner is a great skill to have when working in hospitality. You’ll receive a lot of phone calls from customers reserving tables. Finally, a break from serving customers. It’s time for a catch up with assessor Michael to have a chat and discuss her progress. And there you have it, the typical day of a hospitality apprentice. Working as a hospitality apprentice can be fun and rewarding. Give us a call for details about our latest apprenticeship opportunities.
Port visit highlights future careers
Logistics Academy students paid a visit to Teesport in an effort to further develop their understanding of the industry. Handling more than 5,000 vessels each year and around 40 million tonnes of cargo, there’s few better places to witness the size of the sector and the diversity of careers that exist within it. Taking a tour of the port, with stop-offs at the Freightliner and Cleveland Potash terminals, the visit was the latest in a series of master classes, workshops and trips, that the students have embarked on as part of the Career Ready programme. Students also get the chance to take part in a four week internship. The aim of the academy, which is delivered by Stockton Riverside College in partnership with PD Ports, Career Ready,
Think Logistics, SRC Bede Sixth Form and NETA Training, is to raise young people’s awareness of the industry and highlight its career opportunities. Business and Logistics Academy student Wajid Hussain, who is hoping to eventually work in fleet management said: “One of the best parts for me has been the trips. We have visited companies where you are given advice from people who are experts in their own companies and know what they are looking for and expect from students.” SRC Bede student Emily Clark said: “It has been really good, I have gained a lot of confidence from it but also made good contacts as well.”
