STUDENTS V THE ARMY CAN THEY TAKE THE HEAT? Young chefs turned up the heat on their cooking skills with a student versus army Hell’s Kitchen-style challenge. Professional Cookery students invited army chefs to go head-to-head in a cook-off. “The idea was to give our students a totally different experience,” said Louise Ramp, course leader for Catering and Hospitality. And what could be better than getting the chance to cook alongside army forces personnel with years of experience cooking and serving food for the military? Each team served up a three course menu and paying dinner guests were the judges with a tally kept of orders coming in. Seconded to the army team, Professional Cookery student, Jake Thomson, said: “I learnt so much from being on the army’s team. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
MUSICAL THEATRE STUDENTS ARE FELINE FINE A musical masterclass with one of Teesside’s own West End stars proved just the ticket for students preparing to put on a purr-fect performance. This summer Performing Arts Musical Theatre students brought Cats the Musical to the stage. And who better to offer some tips than West End musical performer, Mark Richardson? The 38-year-old, who is originally from Normanby, spent the best part of 20 years on the Cats stage, performing both in London and across Europe.

Impressed with the students’ hard work and dedication, he said: “It’s always nice to be able to share my experience in the North-east, working with upcoming talent close to my hometown.”
Crafty students create a money spinner Enterprising students have been putting their skills to good use, turning their construction skills into a money spinner. The crafty bunch produced a range of driftwood sculptures to sell as part of Stockton Riverside College’s enterprise initiative. Rather than cashing in on the scheme, the group decided to give the money to charity. Delivering the cash to Butterwick Hospice, Joey Knights, 16, of Thornaby, said: “The enterprise project was really good, we got to learn different skills while doing something to help other people. “It was nice to get the chance to go to the hospice and see who we have been helping.”
It’s a community effort Our Prince’s Trust students have been out and about doing their bit for their surrounding communities. The Stockton Team, made up of unemployed young people from the town, offered a helping hand to Teesdale Children’s Day Nursery. “The students picked this place because they wanted to help the children at the nursery and it would help lift the community,” said Team leader Chris Barnes. The Team raised money by taking part in a static bike ride and holding a cake sale. They also received £500 sponsorship from North Star Housing to help cover the cost of the materials needed to give the nursery a bit of a revamp. Meanwhile our Billingham Prince’s Trust Team have been helping refurb the garden at the town’s Allington House Care Home. The group stained fences, pulled out weeds, refurbished garden furniture and generally rejuvenated the lawn and surrounding flower beds. Liam Bell, 19, from Billingham said: “It has been good doing something for the community and getting to know people.” The Prince’s Trust Team programme is a personal-development course, delivered by Stockton Riverside College, helping young unemployed people aged 16 to 25 to gain the skills and confidence to move back into education, training or employment.

THE SKILLS ACADEMY AWARDS It was awards time at The Skills Academy in Billingham as students were presented with certificates to celebrate their achievements throughout the year. Our English for Speakers of Other Languages students always know how to put on a celebration. And this summer was no different as learners came together to mark the end of the academic year. The annual event recognises students’ stand out achievements and also offers the chance to bring cultures together in celebration.
SRC BEDE AWARDS Students coming to the end of their time with SRC Bede Sixth Form marked the occasion with a fun awards ceremony. Both teachers and students got to have their say on the awards which included titles such as “biggest contribution to life at Bede” and student “most likely to invent something”.
AVIATION AWARDS Our ever increasing number of Aviation high flyers made a return to Teesside to help celebrate our 8th annual Aviation Awards.
Keeping up with the Oscars’ action
The ceremony at Durham Tees Valley Airport recognises the achievements of our Aviation students and offers the perfect chance for former students, now working in the industry to drop by to share their experiences.
ENTERPRISING STOCKTON AWARDS Stockton Riverside College was proud to host the first Enterprising Stockton Awards. The event recognised the achievements of budding young entrepreneurs. Part of Enterprising Stockton, the college aims to encourage a culture of enterprise among its students and across Stockton.

ROAD SAFETY DRIVE COMES TO NETA From seeing a live demo of a friend being cut from a car to testing their brake response times, important lessons in road safety were brought home to apprentices and students at NETA. The Stockton centre welcomed visitors from the emergency services in a special event aimed at driving home the dangers of drink-driving, speeding, driving while distracted and not wearing seat belts. By reaching out to new and learner drivers, Ruth Thompson, Casualty Reduction Co-ordinator for the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit (CDSOU) said: “Our aim is to get the young people to think about potential consequences. “We work with young people because they often tend to be overrepresented in collisions. This can be due to inexperience, attitudes or even that sense of invincibility.”
creative students put their artwork on show There’s more to studying Art and Design at Stockton Riverside College than drawing and painting. Just take a look at this year’s summer exhibition, titled Transformations. The display included all of the fine artwork you would expect from an exhibition. But our students also push their creative skills further, transforming their designs into print, photography and even sculpture. Course leader for Art and Design Liz Dixon said: “The students have come up with some really interesting concepts surrounding this idea of transformation, including a good mix of disciplines, from fine art to textile, graphics and interior design.”
