THE PRINCE’S TRUST AT STOCKTON RIVERSIDE COLLEGE

INTRODUCING THE PRINCE’S TRUST & STOCKTON RIVERSIDE COLLEGE Prince’s Trust Team Programme

Stockton Riverside College has delivered The Prince’s Trust Team programme at locations across the North of England for 21 years. The Team programme is a 12-week course for those aged 16 to 25 who are not currently in employment, education or training. In that time, working with The Prince’s Trust, we have supported more than 3,000 local young people in developing their employment, teamwork and communication skills. In turn the young people have been able to give back to their own local communities through fundraising, community engagement and social action.

Prince’s Trust Achieve study Programme

The Prince’s Trust Achieve programme is a year long study programme for 16-19 year olds which enrols from October to December. The programme includes a Prince’s Trust Certificate in Personal Development and Employability at E3, L1 or L2 for two days per week, two days per week on work placement from January, and maths and English functional skills or GCSE. This is delivered from our Stockton Riverside College, Teesdale site.

Prince’s Trust Achieve short course

The Prince’s Trust Achieve short course is a three week taster course for young people aged 16-19 years old, themed in either sports or enterprise. They will achieve a Prince’s Trust Award in Personal Development and Employability at E3, L1 or L2.

The Prince’s Trust is a charity in the United Kingdom founded in 1976 by Charles, Prince of Wales to help vulnerable young people get their lives on track. It supports 11 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion.

Last year The Prince’s Trust helped over 57,000 young people get into jobs, education and training.

205,063 young people have participated in the 12-week Team programme since its launch in 1990.

Some Of Our Success Stories...… YOUNG PEOPLE HELP TO PAINT BRIGHTER FUTURES The young people volunteered to refresh Risedale’s old caretaker’s cottage as part of their two-week community challenge. The Team also redecorated the school’s drama room. School Principal Colin Scott said: “To have these young volunteers come and lend a hand is fantastic.”

‘‘To have these young volunteers come and lend a hand is fantastic.”

A group of young people from The Prince’s Trust Team Programme have been rolling up their sleeves to help revamp an unused school building in Catterick. The volunteers who are taking part in the programme could now see their efforts help bring alternate opportunities to youngsters in the region who may have fallen out of mainstream education. Transforming the former caretaker’s house at Risedale Sports and Community College, Prince’s Trust Team leader Chris Barnes said: “This was a massive challenge for our Team of young people but one that they have really risen to.” The Prince’s Trust Catterick Team programme is a 12-week personal development course delivered by Stockton Riverside College. It offers young people aged 16 to 25 the chance to develop new skills by taking part in a series of tasks and challenges.

He explained: “The house has not been used for a long time. While we have this facility and some great ideas for what we can use it for, as everyone knows school budgets are tight and that has affected our ability to adapt it and bring it into full use.” Renaming the facility Lawrence House, after the school’s former caretaker and his son, the young people were joined by MP for Richmond (Yorks) Rishi Sunak, who dropped in to commend their efforts. Mr Sunak said: “These young people have put a lot of effort into something that is going to benefit a lot of children. They should be commended for that and I am grateful to them. In the process they will have learnt a lot about teamwork and leadership, which will service them well when they go on to do what they want to do with their lives.”

The Team funded the community challenge with £250 from the Key Fund and £233 raised during a supermarket bag pack. Carpets were provided by Calvert Carpets and Paragon Carpets, and a new sign was produced and donated by Eyecatching Signs.

DELIVERING A LESSON IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS

A revamp of a nursery garden proved just the ticket for a group of unemployed young people looking to build their skills. The outdoor space at Darlington’s Serendipity Pre-school was given a refresh by the town’s Prince’s Trust Team.

The refurb at the pre-school on Willow Road came as a double whammy for the young people who, as well as developing their skills, also got the chance to give something back to their local community. Prince’s Trust Darlington Team leader, Mark Hamilton, said: “The community challenge is all about showing the students how they can do something for their own community. It shows them the real difference that they can make.”

He said working on the garden project was a demanding task that not only had them working hard,

but it also encouraged them to be creative while developing their personal qualities such as working effectively in a team.

The group dug in by revamping the mud kitchen, creating a bug hotel, sandpit and water feature, they added a new canopy, made a table and chairs with wooden pallets and even added a wormery, as well as adding colourful decorations throughout. Serendipity Pre-School manager, Sam Donkin, said: “The outdoor space is really important to our children so this will be of real benefit.”

She said: “It can be exceptionally good for children with additional needs and for those who the classroom just doesn’t work. These children often tend to learn better outdoors because they don’t realise they are learning.”

Some Of Our Success Stories...… PRINCE’S TRUST TEAMS OFFER HOLIDAY HELP

Our Prince’s Trust Teams have been out and about doing their bit in the community.

the Prince’s Trust students, with lunch also served by staff at the centre.

The Middlesbrough and Billingham Teams have been helping to deliver fun family Holiday Hunger clubs at Breckon Hill Community Centre in Middlesbrough.

It proved the perfect activity for Prince’s Trust Middlesbrough student Daniel who hopes to go on to work in childcare. He said: “This course has helped me confidence-wise. I am normally the quiet one that doesn’t speak much, but it has helped me with that.”

PRINCE’S TRUST TEAM ADDS A SPLASH OF COLOUR

The creative team, rolled up their sleeves to redecorate a drop-in area at the Auckland Youth and Community Centre. With the students adding murals to the walls, including a solar system and caterpillar alphabet, the distinctive artwork is already proving a welcome addition to the community space. “The group of seven young people did an amazing job and thoroughly enjoyed it,” he said. “The most important thing is that

they got that sense of pride that they had achieved so much in such a short space of time.” Also delighted with their efforts was Auckland Youth and Community Centre’s business development manager, John Wiseman. He said: “The young people’s work is really eye catching and has quite the wow factor for young visitors to the centre. The team worked hard and were a very friendly and organised bunch.”

Some Of Our Success Stories...… PRINCE’S TRUST TEAM GIVE GARDEN A SUMMER MAKEOVER A helping hand in the garden came at just the right time for residents of a Billingham care home. The run of fine weather has seen the pensioners of Allington House Care Home out enjoying a spot of fresh air in their newly spruced up garden. The hard work was carried out by a group of unemployed young people taking part in the Prince’s Trust Billingham Team. By staining fences, pulling out weeds, refurbishing the garden furniture and generally rejuvenating the lawn and surrounding plant beds, Team Leader Martin Copley said: “The Team has done a really good job, especially when you look at the size of the fencing and the work that has had to go into it.” Keen to do their bit to help the local community, the care home on Marsh House Avenue proved the ideal location for the Team’s community project. “Some of the team members have family that either live or work here,” said Martin. “Plus it is part of their own community so it makes all the difference for the young people to feel that they are making a difference where they live.” Raising money by taking part in a sponsored walk, holding a blind card and securing funding from the Key Fund, the Team were able to cover the cost of all the materials. Home manager Karen Poole said: “The

young people have done an amazing job and all of the residents and their families are delighted. “The Team has put so much hard work and effort into it.The residents love to spend time in the garden, particularly in the summer months. Everyone that goes into the garden has said how beautiful it looks.” Liam Bell, 19, from Billingham said: “It has been good doing something for the community and getting to know people. I have never really done anything like this before but it’s good because we have helped make the home’s gardens better.” The Prince’s Trust Team programme is a self-development course, delivered by Stockton Riverside College, helping young unemployed people aged 16 to 25 to gain the skills and confidence to move back into education, training or employment.

CREATIVE CENTRE SAYS THANK YOU TO PRINCE’S TRUST AND STEEL FUND Twenty unemployed young people from Teesside spent a busy two weeks transforming an award-winning centre that gives adults with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy being creative and independent. Backed by a £2,500 grant from UK Steel Enterprise’s Community Support Fund, the Prince’s Trust Middlesbrough and Redcar Teams gave the Creative Thinking Resource Centre in Redcar a fresh look. Centre Support Manager Tony Morrell said: “The centre has been buzzing with activity and the team worked really hard. The team has freshened up the building including a colourful, welcoming hallway, a beachthemed mural and a ramp to help with access.” Around 50 adults with a range of learning disabilities use the centre every week and enjoy the chance to socialise and discover new interests including drawing and painting, craftwork, animation and media.”

UK Steel Enterprise, the business-support subsidiary of Tata Steel, has now backed Prince’s Trust projects on Teesside with more than £42,000 in total, helping hundreds of young people and supporting the community projects that make up part of their programme. Prince’s Trust Project Leader Craig Murphy said: “This is the first time we have brought teams together from Middlesbrough and Redcar so the centre had to brace itself for a bit of a take-over. I was very proud of all the young people as they did a great job.” Sarah Thorpe of UK Steel Enterprise said: “We are keen supporters of The Prince’s Trust Team Programmes on Teesside. They not only help young people into work but also give projects that benefit Teessiders of all ages a boost.”
